Title: conversations
Post by Debr on Jun 28th, 2008 at 7:19pm
Have you ever been walking past people and you know they are talking about your hair?  You only hear small comments but it enuf to know it your hair they are discussing.  Happned to me the other day.  I heard, "yeah, the braid is real thick, ummm weapon?"  "yeah, down is way looong."  Altho some things I couldnt hear, I still knew it was me.

So, I just smiled and kept on going.  ;).

Yeah, that happens to me sometimes and I always find it awkward.  I never know if I should butt in and say thank you, when I overhear people chatting amongst themselves about their fondness of my hair, clothes or whatever.  So, unless they address me, I just take the easy way out and act like I don't hear them. :P

In your case, I wonder what they meant when they said "weapon"...perhaps a braid long enough to be used as a whip? :-?

Yeah La Diosa, I felt like I was eavesdropping.  As far as "weapon" goes, my hair is very thick, heavy, and hip length especially when braided.  So, if I were to move suddenly and my braid spins around, I could possibly hurt someone witih it or even knock something off of a shelf.  I just kinda laughed that remark off cuz I didnt hear the rest of the comment that went with it.  They were whispering, not really wanting me to hear but yet they kept looking at me.

Its hard to not butt in even though I know it was my hair being discussed.  Sometimes I like to tell others about my hair care regime or if they ask, I can possibly help them with theirs.  Soo hard to keep my mouth shut.

I got a very strange hair comment the other day.  I was in Costa Rica for two weeks to study sea turtles, and for reasons of practicality (i.e. My hair is exactly the right length to swat mosquitoes, and it was HOT) I was wearing it in a high ponytail.  Except then I found a dead beetle in my ponytail (GROSS, by the way) so I braided the ponytail.  The next day one of my teachers commented on how thick and strong my braid looked, and how it looked like a rope that you could save yourself with... I think she meant it to be a compliment but it was a little weird.

I hope someday someone will whisper about my long thick hair!  I can see how at your length you could do some damage with your hair.

Callisto, I love Costa Rica!  I haven't been since 1984 on a singing tour-I have such fond memories.  Thanks for reminding me!!

Dead beetle in hair = creepy!  It is a strange comment, I hope you weren't in any danger while studing sea turtles!  I just remembered!  When we arrived in Punteraneas (sorry if I slaughtered the spelling) there was a huge shell of a dead sea turtle on the sand.  It was soo big and the empty eye holes were creepy/fascinating.  Such lovely warm volcanic sand.

Studying the turtles was really fun.  The only annoying thing was that we had to do 4 hour beach patrols every night, alternating 8, 10, and 12 o'clock shifts.  We saw three nesting leatherbacks and some hatchlings.

The beetle was pretty creepy.  I went back to our cabin (this was later when we were staying in the rainforest and actually had elecricity) to brush my teeth before sleeping.  The girl's bathrooms didn't have a sink so I used the boys.  Unfortunately, the boys had left the light on which was drawing all sorts of creepy crawlies there.  The next day they actually found a toad in their shower....
Anyways, I was brushing my teeth and there were all sorts of things flying around my face.  I then went into the cabin and changed into my pijamas.  Then I was tightening my ponytail when I felt something hard in my hair, and I couldn't see what it was or whether it was alive.  I pulled it out and it was a half inch long iridescent beetle.  It was then that I decided it might be a good idea to braid my hair...

I have to make sure that I tie my hair up when I'm doing yard work because I've gotten a bug in my hair before as well.  It really creeped me out! :o
