Title: Thick, sparse hair, exposed scalp problem
Post by Drear on Sep 15th, 2008 at 1:32pm
Excuse the title.  I didn't know what else to call my problem.

This basically means that my scalp is either dry and itchy or irritated from sweat/humidity greasy and itchy!  The last is the worst!  I've just begun vinegar rinses to make sure it's not built up.  I try not to wash my scalp.  I have a product that has a menthol scent and "sensation" to it.  You basically apply it to your scalp like a shampoo, let sit for 1-2mins. and rinse out.  It's by Decubal.  I buy it at the pharmacy.  It gives immediate relief but I have a suspicion that it exacerbates the problem.  My hair is certainly itchier in the evening if I've used Decubal 'Treatment for dry and itchy scalp with vitamin B3 and Panthenol for extra care of the scalp with menthol for fresh and cool feeling'.

It's aprox. £10.65 for 150g or $19.04 for 5.29 ounces

I've always had this problem, I've just learnt to accept it but I'd rather not because I may break fewer hairs if I could stop itching my scalp. :-[  I suspect that some of my short hairs aren't just hairs growing back after shedding.  I could've broken them off too.  I find so many long hairs in my bed every morning and with black, thick, coarse hair, each hair is very visible. :( :-[

Ingredients: Aqua, Dihydrogenated Palmoylethyl, Hydroxyethymonium Methosulfate,
Niacinamide, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, PPG-3 Myristyl Ether, Behentrimonium Methossulfate, Menthol, Dipropylene Glycol, Hydrolyzed Wheat protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Panthenol, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate.

I've no idea what the above all stands for but I'm sure that armed with loads of patience, Google will tell me. ;)  It's what the pharmacist recommended.  I don't know how much they know about these things.

Dihydrogenated Palmoylethyl Hydroxyethymonium Methosulfate (what a mouthful!)  is a low pH surfactant (breaks down dirt with water), which would be good for your scalp condition.

Niacinamide is water soluable B3.  I'm guessing this is intended to help heal the scalp.

Behentrimonium Methossulfate is made from colza oil (canola) Mild ingredient used as a emulsifier, recommended for use in baby products which are left on the skin.

The menthol is meant to stimulate the scalp for healing purposes.

If you get immediate relief using the product, I'd suggest continuing to use it, but you might try following it up by oiling the scalp as well.  Jojoba oil works well for that.

Good luck!

In my own experience .. acv rinses normally cause scalp to itch like crazy! I still indulge in many rinses a week, but I've just learned to work through it. The only thing I can really recommend is not brushing or combing your scalp when your hair is wet, and instead, waiting until your hair dries to use a nice soft-bristle brush (such as a boar bristle brush or a mason pearson brush) so that you don't further irritate your scalp.

Thanks.  I'll give it another chance, continue CV and try oiling.  Less combing and brushing too.  I'm guilty of doing it before my hair is completely dry because it just seems easier.
