Title: Opinions/pointers on hair products, etc....
Post by jencm on Jan 6th, 2010 at 6:24pm
Well today I went and bought myself some sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner (which the name of escapes me at this time) at our Organic market - it was the ONLY stuff there, out of an aisle of haircare stuff, that had NO sulfates, etc in it. I also got a small bottle of Jojoba oil.
I have a question about the sulfate free shampoos and conditioners though - What do all of you use? And is there a less expensive brand to go with? Because I'll tell ya, we're defintely not rich and usually have just barely enough for basic groceries....so me spending $8 a peice for an 11 oz bottle of shampoo and conditioner, is a big deal and just not something I'm sure if I'll be able to keep up. =/ So I'm wondering, is there a brand or place to get any of these where it's a bit less expensive? I know there's FAR more expensive ones than what I got!

Also, I got a satin pillowcase protector to sleep on - I couldn't justify $40 for a set of two pillowcases at Bed, bath and Beyond!! But I could swing the $4 for the other for now....at least until I look online and see if I can find some better priced. I sleep with several pillows and move around a lot so I think I should have them all covered with one. But at least I'm a step torwards being off all my normal sheets! :)

Right now I am trying out shampoo bars from Chagrin Valley. They only use natural ingredients, so none of their bars have sulfates in them.

Before that, I tried Organix (which didn't impress me) and Chemistry Salon Shampoo. Both of these ran me about 6 dollars at my local drug store. My grocery store, on the other hand, had NO sulfate free shampoo. I highly suggest you try your local pharmacy like Walgreens, CVS, or RiteAid's hair products section. My RiteAid had an entire section of organic and sulfate-free shampoos of varying fanciness.

If you're not worried about 'cones in your conditioner, most conditioners are sulfate-free, which means you can get your regular favorite conditioner and just worry about finding the right shampoo. Also, depending on the technique you use to wash your hair, you can save a bit by using less shampoo. For instance, the CWC method usually only has you shampooing your roots and scalp, not your length, thus using less shampoo and making your more expensive bottle of SLS-free shampoo stretch longer.  :)

Hope that helps!

Ida from Chagrin Valley is so nice.  Her husband Howard does some fine woodworking in his woodshop, too!
Don't freak out if you go through the funky hair syndrome while transitioning to shampoo bars.  It'll only last alittle while until your hair gets used to them.
I've kept them in my freezer in a zip lock bag because there's just too many of them! :o  I'm sure you'll find a favorite or two that you and your hair will love!

Thanks! I'll take a look at those! I def only shampoo my roots, which is what I've always done anyway...So that should help. My hair did feel super smooth and nice after using though, defintely different than if I'd just washed with regular shampoo. :) And it's pretty nice to be able to go to sleep and get up in the morning and have no tangles at all... :) The New pillowcase is totally helping with that too!

Glad all is going well all around! :)  Satin pillowcases are a god send and I wouldn't be without them! ;)

Hi, Jen, I use Burt's Bees sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.  It does run about $8/bottle at WalMart, but the conditioner is so thick that I dilute it 3 or 4 to 1 and it works just fine.  So that equals about 75% off on the conditioner, if that helps.
