Hello, I have Asian hair that looks black in the shade but light brownish in the sunlight. It used to look more reddish when I was younger. It's currently touching my shoulderblades  and my goal is to grow it out to mid-back. But it's a long road because I used to have layered short hair and now I'm having to grow out the layers because I'm hoping to have hair of the same length. I can do a French braid but because of the layers, hair tends to fall out.

Most Asians have very straight hair but my hair is unusually wavy, looks like braid waves, only it's natural. It's been like this since I was born but people are always asking me if it was permed. It happened again today. I went to the hairdresser to trim the ends and she asked me if it was permed.

Wecome to LongLocks, Camellia.  Are you Japanese?  I love camellia oil for my hair!
I also have people ask if my waves are a perm, although I bet you get asked that a lot more than me.

Be patient with growing out the layers.  As BikerBraid says, You can do it!

Thanks for the welcome everyone! No, I'm not Japanese but I do use a Korean camellia oil lotion for my hair.

The thing is that pin-straight hair is popular here in Asia so hairdressers are always trying to make money by trying to persuade me to go for expensive straightening treatments. I like my hair because it is unusual but people just think it is unruly.

I am a bit envious because even in my baby photos I had curls all over my head. I will never have the stereotypical straight Asian hair without chemical help. I look at little girls with long straight hair and it's so nice. My hair sure wasn't like that at that age!

Yay, another camellia oil fan!

I'm glad you're embracing your waves.  Sure straight hair is nice and curly hair is nice, too!

When I was growing up my mom always had layers cut into my hair or it would be crazy.  I guess the products I used at that time probably didn't help, either.

Good Luck on your hair growing journey!
