Tips for the Competitive Swimmer?
Oct 10th, 2009 at 8:37am

I've recently joined a new swim team. We swim six days a week, one or two times a day in a very chlorinated pool. As a result after only a month, my arm hair is almost completely dissolved off-- if I pull it, it breaks off. So far, the hair on my head looks alright because of my swim cap and deep conditioning. I'm still afraid, however, that my hair will suffer horrific damage. Does anyone know of good products or procedures  for getting all the pool chemicals out?

Rinse, rinse, rinse. With tap water. Before and after swimming. This is probably the easiest thing that you can do that will have the most impact. You can also slick a bit of oil or light conditioner into your hair before putting your swim cap on. Just a teensy amount. And definitely keep a good haircare routine at home including regular trims and weekly deep conditioning treatments. HTH

Congratulations on joining the swim team!  Definitely get your hair wet like Midnight Angel suggests.  There are some shampoos specifically formulated for swimming, I know www.ouidad.com has one.

I suggest wearing a hat when you're in the sun to keep your hair from drying out, and keep up the deep conditioning.  You might need to do deep conditioning more than once a week because of your activity.  A good diet will help your hair, too.

Good Luck!!!

Was poking through KillerStrands' store for some sulfate-free hair products, and saw this. Thought you might be interested.  Smiley
