Industrialized glass making began in the Czech Republic, formerly known as Czechoslovakia, in the early 15th century. Local production throughout the country was characterized by many small workshops that specialized in the blowing, engraving, cutting and the painting of glass and crystal. Bohemian glass was originally thought to be magical, as was Prague considered a magical city. Bohemian glass has been famous worldwide since the 18th century, although local production of glass actually started in the 14th century. Bohemian glass is still very popular today and is used extensively throughout the jewelry making industry.
The Czechs make many kinds of beautiful glass beads but they are best known for their breathtaking rose beads! Each of these hair pins is adorned with a Bohemian rose teardrop bead, one in satin blue and one in satin white, nestled into a vintage silver plated bead cap. Blue and white round Czech rose beads occupy the center position. Swarovski bicone crystals in Crystal Aurora Borealis and Sapphire sit below. Silver plated heishi beads complete the design. The hair sticks are intricately engraved bone, hand painted in satiny sapphire blue under layers of protective clear enamel. These one-of-a-kind LongLocks hair accessories measure 5 3/4" long from end to end.
