Title: is that your Real hair? Post by buttonlass on Mar 9th, 2003 at 11:32pm
Working with the public in a restaurant, I am amazed at how often I get asked "is that your REAL hair?" or "Is All that your hair?" I have been asked how long it takes to put these extensions in my hair (I've never worn extensions, I have below waist length hair), and unfortunately all the above questions have always come from women.
The fellas have always asked how long does it take me to put up my hair, braid it, etc.. They tell me how sexy long hair is and they love to see what styles I do, because I never do the same hair do the same week. |

You must have very striking hair to receive those types of comments. Hair extensions have become quite popular with actresses and musicians. They usually do not look as nice as the real thing when you get up close. Maybe you could share some of your styles with everyone here.

I have heard this as well ("Is that really your hair?!"), but I have learned to take this as a compliment. It does take a lot of patience and effort to keep up healthy, long hair, and those who don't have it obviously have the secret will for it if they're commenting on it? ;D

I appreciate the input, (is that your Real hair?). I do understand that these comments are generally compliments. Having to deal with the public is always challenging and fun. (It's amazing the questions and comments in general I got asked as a bartender. The old saying, people tell bartenders everything, they do.)
I get real uncomfortable when a couple comes in and the guy says out loud to his lady "why don't you have long sexy hair like hers?" That kind of comment puts women on the defense. Not everyone wants to have long hair, or is it feasible. I think Jamie Lee Curtis looks really sexy with short hair. It just makes me look fat. |

To put them at ease, you could respond with a compliment for the lady's hairstyle and even admit that you know you could not wear her style. (You might get an extra tip for "saving the day"!) |

It is true that not everyone can have long hair. For some people it just doesn't grow, and some people who leave their long hair down it seems to drag down their faces. The shortest hair I've tried on myself is just below shoulder-length, and even that took a lot more work to maintain than this length! But I appreciate it once in a while when someone else with long, gorgeous hair compliments me on mine, because we both know how it feels! And I always compliment everyone I see about their long hair as well!

The first time someone asked me if my hair was real I was really shocked....now I hear the question about 2 or 3 times a month...I figure that hair my length (just above my knees) is a novelity for most people and I'de rather have them ask than to assume it isn't real...
I work with the public too so I've heard all of the questions and comments....sometimes it is like being a side show act whick can be a little strange every now and then. But why not I like the attention. ginny |

Your length certainly is not typical and deserves all the attention you receive. You must wear your hair down frequently for people to notice the length. You must be blessed with hair that does not tangle easily. |

This is a really old thread but still very relevant. Extensions are so common nowdays that if your hair is long, it makes people wonder.
I visited my home town over the summer, and I'd seen a few folks that I hadn't seen in years. My step sister kept making a huge deal about how nice and full my bun was, and she was begging me to take it down so she could see the length. I repeatedly explained to her, that my hair was still the same length as the last time she saw me 2 years ago, because I'd been cutting out layers, but she was still insisting that I remove my bun. So I did finally, to get her to stop bugging me. After I let my hair down, everyone around admitted that they actually thought that my bun was a hair piece. ??? On 2 occasions at 2 different jobs, I've actually had women put their hands in my hair, without my permission mind you, checking for extensions. >:( I still can't believe it, and my hair isn't even THAT long! People also ask me if my eyes are really hazel, they think I wear contacts but, thats a whole other topic. LOL!!! |

On a few occasions I've had people "grab" my bun to see if it was real or not. I usually let them know pretty quickly that 1) I don't appreciate people tugging at my hair and 2) I certainly don't appreciate people touching my hair without permission. A few people have not believed me when I told them the bun was all my own hair - I think they didn't believe it because the ends of my hair are sooo much lighter than my scalp hair - it can look like a bad match. But when I take it down and they see the progression of the color, they understand better.

So, people have touched your hair too huh. I can't believe the nerve of some people. But at least you spoke up though, good for you!! Both times that I've had my hair "violated" by co workers, I was pretty much too shocked to say anything :o They usually laughed about it, but by my expression I'm sure they got the gist that I wasn't amused.

There's this girl at work who is so nice and s3xy looking and with awesome blue eyes but with fried overprocessed dyed and dead hair. I have given her loads of advice on how to protect and care for her hair, even gifted her oils and a pair of LL Mother-of-Pearl stix. Well she opted to have extensions added to her hair to complete her beauty. Waist-length extensions.
Guys at work liked her new hair - no questions asked, but women co-workers started questioning MY hair, along hers, too!!! A couple of them even went as far as to pull at my hair to see if it hurt! I was soo angry. >:( They knew me and have known me and my long hair for a long time, but the extensions of another woman made them wonder for me, too!!! Comments, questions and the occasional pull. Sheesh..... |

People need to learn to keep their hands to themselves!! Boy,I'll tell you!! Why do people think that it's perfectly fine and normal to pull or touch someone else's hair? Things just amaze me!

That's awful, Greek_Lady. People can be so dumb, huh?
There's no way extensions can compare to your hair, I'm sure!!! |

Extensions are not forever. They fall out (or rip the base hair out!! :o) Anyone that you've seen with long hair for more than 6 months, probably really has long hair. But I guess some people would not think about that. Greek Lady - I can't imagine anyone suggesting your hair is not all your own. :-/

I hope she doesn't further ruin her hair with those extensions. If she ruins her hair, who will use the beautiful mother of pearl LL hairsticks? I volunteer ;)
