Since we all know each other through this I thought it might be nice to get to know each other better - non-hair related. So what kind of things do you guys like to do? What are your hobbies? (sorry I'm not trying to pry :D)

I love cross stitch! My mum and I do it all the time. I love reading, too, but find I only have time for it on the weekends, because weekdays are full of school work and practising music. Bikerbraid, what do you mean by tat?
|
Title: Re: Hobbies Post by bikerbraid on May 9th, 2003 at 5:28pm
Tatting is a method of tieing knots in thread to make lace and lace edgings. It can be done with a shuttle or a needle. It was more popular long ago and was used to make doilies, lace collars, and lace edgings for handkerchiefs.

My life is LongLocks. That's it. I work on LongLocks for 8-16 hours every damn day of my life, LOL!

Wow! It takes a lot of patience and tenacity to be able to work on one specific thing for long amounts of time. Of course... if you *enjoy* it, it's not hard at all! Same with me playing the piano... I can go for hours and hours and hours and stop only when someone stops me! :P

But you do an excellent job of it, and we all appreciate it. (Hope you took a few hours off for your birthday! ;D ) |

No, you're right and I *do* enjoy it tremendously. After being a writer and computer geek for so many years, it's fabulous to be able to do this now, I am very fortunate. And even though I am working on "one thing," being a cottage artisan involves a lot more than just making hairsticks for the boutique. There's vintage crystals and beads to be hunt down and bought, tons of custom work, website design and maintenance, lots of paperwork and email, designing new styles, writing content for the site, marketing and advertising, shipping, customer appreciation goodies, all kinds of stuff. I am never bored and I am never DONE! |

It sounds like so much FUN ;D

Hobbies.....I like to knit, do cross-stitch, travel, sail little sailboats (like sunfish), paint (anything walls, murals, paintings), collect antiques like Noritake's Azalea (my china pattern) crystal steamware, and fabric. I'm an interior designer so the fabric habbit is added to by that fact. Oh yea I sew too.

I did not read this before- think I´m getting old ;)
My hobbies are reading, horseriding, cooking (and eating *lol*) and everything that has to do with oriental culture. For example I speak Turkish and collect scarfs with oya which is a very special handmade lace trim that can have a special meaning. |

Wow E., you'd love it at my house. We collect vintage kimono, mostly the really extravagant ones (uchikake and furisode). We have tons of orientalia scattered around and when we build our new house next year it's definitely going to be a Japanese design. Here's some pics of a few of our uchikake (wedding kimono), though the fanciest ones are all packed away. I told my hubby that if we have to evacuate, SAVE THE KIMONO! Hey, I have my priorities! LOL! |
Title: Re: Hobbies Post by E. on Sep 19th, 2003 at 10:11am
How gorgeous! This is really textile art :o :o :o Do you sometimes wear them or are the too precious?
Here are some of my goodies: This is a traditional moroccan party dress called taksheeta. This is an oya with daisy pattern. E. |
Title: Re: Hobbies Post by bikerbraid on Sep 19th, 2003 at 11:00am
WOW! Those kimonos are gorgeous! I have some silk jackets from Japan and Korea that my father acquired when he was in the Navy during WWII and Korea, but they are NOTHING like what you gals have.
I'm with you Rapunzel, SAVE THE KIMONO! [You could ship them to my safe midwest location for safe-keeping 8) ) |
Title: Re: Hobbies Post by Rapunzel on Sep 19th, 2003 at 12:01pm wrote on Sep 19th, 2003 at 10:11am:
Never! Well, the uchikake can't really be worn as they are about 6' long and drag like a train... they aren't bound by an obi like furisode or traditional kimono are. They are the uppermost layer of many that are worn by brides. We display them as textile art on our walls. Your taksheeta is just gorgeous! I'd be terrified to wear that, too. |

Lets see, I like to do beading. Mostly jewelry right now, however I am very interested in any sort of embellished fabric. So I am hoping to start doing art quilting soon. I have a few magazines and an artist friend who is going to give me some pointers after her husbands next hip replacement and recovery at the end of this month.
I love to read. English mysteries, which I don't seem to have found much time for lately, Hum. I read a lot of new age spirituality books. I love to cook, gardening and I have a small collection of milk glass. Rapunzel and E., your collections are amazing. Thanks for the pixs. Oh and lets not forget an obsession with ebay ::) |

Oooooooo, I would love to see some of your beading. I have done a few simple pieces and would love to do more. (but I have 10 blankets to make, and 5 cross stitch projects to finish). |

Hi! My hobby is that I write a lot. I am currently working on fan fiction. I am writing a Harry Potter fan fiction novel at www.fanfiction.net called "The Mirror Of My Dreams." My main character has long hair, and is, of course, hair obsessed. By chapter seven, she wears magical hair sticks that look like serpentine dragons topped with emeralds. HAHAHA! ;D My pen name is "LadyJenilyn" if you're interested in looking it up on the fanfiction.net site. I even mentioned to my readers that if they didn't know what hair sticks were, they should go to Longlocks.com (Hey, Rapunzel, free advertsing! Do I get a commission?);)
Anyway, I love writing. Sometimes I get stuff published in magazines and stuff, but the problem is that the money is not steady enough to actually make a living on. How sad! :'( |

Writing is such a great hobby. I do way too much technical writing to have a creative bone left in my body. My mother was a free-lance writer. It was extra income while my sister and I were young and she was not working full-time.
I'll have to check out your stories. I have a friend that is working on an e-novel about 2 teens during the 70's. He also does the artwork for his book. Of course the 2 main characters of the book have LONG HAIR! The story is not quite finished, but it is still a fun read. (Especially to those of us who remember the 70's). Tale of Two Friends |

Anyone out there do any knitting? My most recent obsessive hobby is knitting socks and mittens. I'm still new to these types of knitting (heels and thumbs can be a challenge!), and always looking for ideas for patterns and yarns. I hope to get them nice enough to give as Christmas gifts this year.

Title: Re: Hobbies Post by Kate on May 27th, 2004 at 9:19pm
Nope, no knitting. I learned how to crochet in 5th grade, but all I ever did was miles and miles of chain. I used to drape it all over my room at Xmas time.
Some of my hobbies include cooking (especially making chocolates), reading, golfing, playing mahjong and collecting bakelite bangles (it's the only thing I collect, I have enough things to dust). /Kate |

I listed my hobbies and interests in my introduction so I guess it would be kind of silly to repost them here ::)
