I am curios about about your use of hair accessoires. What do you own and what do you like most? I recently tried to tidy up my bathroom  and found out I own too much stuff   :P Bobby pins, hairpins, barrettes, ponytailholders, hairsticks, beadstrings to braid in, floating jewelry etc.

I nearby daily use my hairsticks because there is nothing more practical than bun and stick. Second choice are ponytails and braids. I never use the barrettes, maybe I should try to sell them  ;D

Yes,me too!I own many metal-backed barrettes(some very pretty ones)but I never use them because of the damage they do to my hair :( On top of that,many contain nickel and other things I´m allergic to,so they just lie on my shelf collecting dust ;D
So that leaves my absolute favourites-hairsticks!I use them almost everyday for my braided bun,only sometimes I do a regular bun with a scrunchie.

I have SO MANY! I have barrettes, mini claw clips, scrunchies, hairsticks, braid holders, hair slides........ I don't even know how many I own!  ;)

I have many, many hairsticks, lots of bunjii's, some scrunchies, and a few barrettes.  Organizing them is a trick - I keep running out of space.

Dumb Question from a newbie :)

Aside from styling your hair, I mean in terms of just for looks, is there any other reason in terms of growing benefit why you would use accessories. This probably doesn't make sense ??? So I will try again!

In terms of growing my hair and just trying to keep better care of it on a day to day basis (irrespective of wearing it in a particular style) are there certain accessories that I should consider using - and if so, what benefit would they give me. In other words is there a benefit to using some of these accessories compared with just allowing my hair to hang loose.

Also, I noticed a lot of different accessories listed here. What are the main uses, differences and benefits of using them. I guess some of the uses may seem obvious (like a ponytail holder) but I am interested in the benefits too. And are certain types of accessory better than others - I noticed someone say the nickel in a metal barrette is not good.

The accessories I counted so far include:

Bobby pins (not sure what that is)
hairpins (whats the difference with above)
barrettes (???)
ponytailholders, (duh)
hairsticks, (not sure - is it a stick)
beadstrings to braid (???)

Here's a beginners explaination of the hair accessories:

Bobby pins are typically metal with plastic coating on the ends.  They are used to hold hair in place.  The metal is springy.

Hairpins are similar to bobby pins, but the metal sides do not touch each other - they make a U shape.  They are used to secure buns, french rolls and other styles that require holding hair in place.

Barrettes are a decorative clasp that holds hair.  They usually have a hinged clasp.

Hairsticks are what Long Locks sells!!! They can be everything from beautiful crystal stick to basic pencil or chopstick stuck in the hair.

Mini claw clips are spring hinged and have "teeth" on each side.  The claw is opened, placed around a bun or section of hair and then allowed to close, holding the hair.

Scrunchies are fabric covered ponytail holders.

Hair slides are similar to barrettes, except they don't have the hinged clip on them.  Instead they use a stick that goes through an opening on each side of the device and behind the hair.  The tension then holds the hair.  These are usually considered to be more hair-friendly and less likely to break the hair than barrettes.

Bunjii's are a covered elastic cord that is wrapped around the ponytail.  You can see them at www.bunjii.com

ive just bought my first pair of hair sticks. i must say i wasn't too hopeful as they only cost £1.25 each...but they work fantastically!!! i cant afford the beautiful one's sold here so i have to make do with plain plastic things but theyre still great! cant keep them out of my hair now.

The plastic ones can work quite well.  I'd suggest you look it over very carefully and see if there are any sharp edges left from making the sticks.  If so, use an emery board to lightly sand the edges off.  Those edges can cut and break your hair!

I just checked out that bunji web site - they look pretty easy to do and quite cool too - not too feminine either. That's definitely something I am prepared to try.
