Title: what oils to use?
Post by Aphrodite on Oct 27th, 2003 at 7:03pm

You've all got me wanting to oil my hair now! other than jojoba and coconut, what other oils can be used... can you use essential oils such as geranium or lavender etc?

A person on another board said that avocado was good.
Edit: Oh yeah, I use Ginseng Miracle Wonder 8 Oil.  It's great.

I love extra virgin olive oil.

Essential oils are too expansive and too much fragranced to use a big amount of them. It is better to mix some drops of essential oils with another oil like jojoba (which works fantastic on my hair).

I use just jojoba oil on my hair and it helps keep it soft.

Weleda (from Germany) makes a good one that I use called "Rosemary hair oil."  You can find it at a health food grocery store like Wild Oats.  It's got a almond oil basis with rosemary oil added; smells nice and absorbs faster than other oils I've tried.

I'm new to all this, how exactly does one oil hair?

Hi Bonnie,

There are many ways to oil hair. If you are going to use oil as a leave-in, you can smooth a bit onto your length while it's dry. For a deep oiling treatment you can oil your length a bit heavily (but not too heavily because you only need as much oil as your hair will absorb). I like to massage oil into my scalp too, it helps with dry scalp and also gets a scalp massage in. Then you can leave it in for a bit and wash it out or wash it out straight afterwards.

Bonnie;
When I oil my hair, I put a small amount of oil in the palm of my hand, then rub my hands together.  I then run my hands down the length of my hair, concentrating on the ends.

I do this with a very small amount of oil for the daytime to help control static and flyaway hair.  At night I will use more oil before braiding my hair, by morining the oil will be completely absorbed and my hair is soft and easy to manage.
