I've just gotten up the courage to join this forum that I have been lurking on for a while. I've been looking around the net for a group that can help support me in my goals and this looks a really friendly and supportive place to be.

A bit about me:

Gender: Male

Age: 26

How long is your hair?  Just past shoulder length, layered, a bit shorter on top, growing it out, and bangs.

What color is your hair? Brown

Is your hair straight/curly/wavy? Very straight and thick and coarse

Do you have favorite products to use on your hair? I like to use Humectress and therappe after an ex girl-friend recommended them.

What are your favorite hair accessories? A brush and comb


I've had a wake up call when it comes to my hair, girl friends and career. I guess I have been keen on growing out my hair but not taken as much care of it as I should. I am now committed to growing my hair to somewhere between mid-back and what you ladies describe as classic length. I am now semi-self-employed in a services/consulting business working with two female partners. We recently split from a corporate company where the attitude to my hair was not fantastically supportive. My two partners and I have discussed my wishes. They support me but at the same time have challenged me to maintain standards about the way I look and care for my hair - no grunge anymore.

So I am coming here to enjoy myself, to seek support for my goals, to learn from your experience and viewpoints and to give support to others where I can.

I can take the froo froo if you can take my dumb beginner questions :) Seriously, I think my past attitude has been anything to do with hair-'care' was something girly and to be avoided. And what that basically got me was hair that hasn't been in the best of condition, hair that could have been longer today than it is, and a series of bad comments and experiences related to my hair at both work and in my personal life.

I have matured a bit (just in the last few months and even days) with my attitude. I have my two partners and an ex girl friend to thank for that. So I will gladly take a bit of froo froo right now :) and I might learn something too :)

Thanks for the welcome flaming_bunny. I'm glad you like my name - it kind of reflects some of the decisions I have recently made to give myself a total image over-haul, smarten up and committ myself to long hair over the long haul.

I haven't mentioned anything about sex here. By partners I am referring to my two female business partners. The three of us own our own company.

What kind of business are you in?

Hi Bikerbraid. We're essentially in the events planning business - from large scale to smaller scale, corporate clients to individuals and families. We can plan and organize an event for a couple of thousand participants through to something for tens of people. On the larger scale for example, we could do something in terms of a sales convention, or leadership meeting, on the smaller scale we even do weddings, graduations etc.

The challenge for me, rather than my two female partners, from the hair perspective is in different ways.

1. Having appropriate hair/style for the client, event, situation. I have to accept that not all clients will like my 'look' especially when it does get much longer, but I aim to please most of them. The girls even wonder if it will set us apart from the competition because I will be more noticeable/memorable. But some clients will be more tolerant of a long haired male than others. And some clients will be more tolerant of a very long haired male than others. It may even turn out to be a positive in some situations.

2. There are situations where we have to go into the 'field'... this can involve just being in a simple setting such as a meeting room at a hotel that we have rented out, or it could be a full scale exhibition hall, with scaffolding errected and even welding going on overhead with sparks flying everywhere. If/as my hair does get longer (not for a while yet admittedly) it may present a safety concern (to me mostly) that I will have to take into account depending on the setting. And of course, I know enough already from reading some of the articles and posts here that an inadvertent accident could lose years of growth as well.

I admire your attitude and am glad to see a man here. :D  My new husband has had long hair (nearly black and ranging from mid-back to waist lengths) for probably 18 years, with a full beard.  He plays bass in a rock band that caters to the biker scene.  Some of the stories he's told me about hair discussions between himself and some of the dudes have been pretty funny and cool.  Apparently there's nothing too sissy about that!  One time, a younger guy sheepishly approached him between sets and said, "I don't mean to weird you out, or anything, but you've got great hair.  What do you use on it?  I'm trying to grow out mine."  They both laughed.  Hubby proceeded to tell him the short version of his simple hair regimen, and a genuine conversation about long hair care developed at a biker bar, right onstage, and between two bikers.  Can't beat that!
