Title: a rather weird question Post by MoonlitRose on Jul 7th, 2004 at 1:19am
i was wondering... ???
since hair & nails are both made out of dead protein, would nail growth products work on hair? like, you rub it into your scalp or something similar? just curious! :P |

Nail growth products should at least theoretically work as well on your hair, if they work at all. But I doubt that anything applied to the surface can have any effect on growth itself, which comes from the cells beneath your skin.
Proper nutrition is the best thing you can do for hair growth, and make sure you're getting enough protein, as hair is made of protein. And don't forget, eating plenty of fat will keep your eyes bright and your coat shiny. :P |

And calcium! I know my nails (which I've never really had trouble growing) are stronger when I take calcium regularly.

Hey MoonlitRose
Like someone's said, very gorgeous screen name! I'm sure there'd have to be a downside, if it makes hair grow faster at all. (I'm being skeptical as usual) If it's not the priceyness, since one's got a lot more scalp than nails, then maybe it'll make hair grow back weaker, lighter, or otherwise un-hair-like. But since you're curious, you could try it on the nearest hamster and see. c////~ Not that Longlocks supports animal testing, mind you. Anais |

Nail growth and hair growth supplements tend to contain more or less the same vitamins/minerals. If you mean the stuff you paint on your nails to "help them grow," that is basically a strengthening matrix which coats the nail and prevents it from breaking off before reaching the desired length. I wouldn't use it on your hair, it would just make a mess! :-)

Uh oh, being a vegetarian and not getting enough protein is one of the worst things - especially for your hair! When I first became vegetarian (about 4-5 years ago), my hair started falling out in clumps because I wasn't getting enough protein. I'm assuming that you're not vegan, so if you're not, drink plenty of milk (as Rapunzel said, it's got calcium as well as protein), eat cheese when you can (fat is good for you too!), eat eggs, try tofu or beans or meat substitutes (just make sure you look at the ingredients first). Whew! Hope that helps! ;) |
