Hi!  I'm new to the group, and y'all can call me Red (everyone does!)  I've been growing my hair out for three years now, with hopes of getting it to at least my waist, possibly longer...  I'm just so jazzed to see so many people here with long hair!  The tips are great, I can't wait to get to know y'all!

How long is your hair?: About 4" from my waist

What color is your hair?  Dark auburn (hence the nickname Red)

Is your hair straight/curly/wavy?  wavy

Do you have favorite products to use on your hair? Aussie, Pantene, and Paul Mitchell (when I can afford it!)

What are your favorite hair accessories?  I love leather slides, combs, and absolutely anything copper or bronze (gold highlights the auburn of my hair like you wouldn't believe!)

Nice to have you aboard, now i'm not the newest one any more *yay!*.  My hair is a deep chestnut, mid-back length (straight) with long layers.  It seems once my hair reaches this point, that's about as long as it will get, my hair's never been any longer...it just kind of stops!  But this is good enough for me, and enough for me to handle since i'm not all that good with doing hairstyles, that's how I found this site, looking for hairstyle ideas...and i've gotten quite a few!  I currently am using Biolage shampoo and conditioner, and do not have much luck with hair accessories, but my favorite to attempt right now are the hair stix.  You can do some pretty cool stuff w/ them, and they look so pretty in the hair.  Look forward to chatting w/ you in the future!  -maggie

Rua.. that's Gaelic, yes?  I'm guessing though, it just sounds like something my grandmother (immigrated from Ireland to the US, and the supposed source of my red hair) would say.  She used to speak to me in Gaelic, but I couldn't understand her.  :-/  I actually ended up with a Music major/ French minor in college, so you can see what I put my linguistic skills into!  

The texture of each hair is thick, not coarse, just.. heavy, but thankfully I don't have a huge amount of it.  When I was in high school it was SO thick and heavy.. and my mother refused to allow me to cut it, so of course I wanted it chopped off!  *could kick myself now*  It's quite a bit more managable now, seeing as how I KNOW how to take care of it, and I'm always trying to find new ways to put it up.  

But look at me!  I'm being Miss Chatty Cathy... *laughs*

Yes it's Irish Gaelic! (The language is broken up into different catagories. Irish, Scottish, and Welsh Gaelic...and then a few other dialects as well.)

Irish is more commonly spoken in certain parts of the West of Ireland (called "Gaeltachts" - which basically means Irish speaking communities. Common in county Kerry and Donegal and the Aran Islands) rather than the East where I live. Where abouts was your Gran from?

Everyone learns Irish from primary school until graduation here, but its still a dying language, despite the governments attempts to keep it alive.
My husband used to speak little Irish things to me when we were courting, and he still does occasionally, but he doesn't like speaking it. It's his way of rebelling against being forced to learn it as a child. LOL

You're hair sounds absolutely lovely. I've got the whiter than white skin and hazel eyes....but my hair is "helped" at being red. I would give anything to have it naturally that way!

Welcome Red! :) Your hair sounds absolutely gorgeous. I've always wanted to have auburn hair. My mother used to dye her brown hair a rich auburn that looked really natural on her, and I think it'd be a nice compliment to my features and coloring as well. Haven't tried it yet though...

Welcome! I think Auburn/red hair is beautiful!  My aunt
had natural auburn hair before she went grey, and
some of my cousins are redheads.  I didn't inherit any
red, just med. brown.

My grandmother was born in Kerry, but her family moved to Dublin when she was 2 or 3, and then they moved to Wales (where she met my grandpa awwwww!) when she was 16.  I'm not quite sure which dialect she used, she had the sweet habit of calling me "little Branwen," who is a Welsh goddess, so..  :-[ I guess I just don't know..

I wasn't a redhead as a child, in fact, I had dusky blonde curls until I was 6, and as it grew out and got longer, it got darker and redder.. and BAM!  I'm an auburn girl... *laughs*  In fact, while I was at the health food store a couple of days ago, the woman behind the desk went on and on about how much she'd like to have auburn hair, and wasn't I just the lucky one?  Why yes, I think I am   ;)

You certainly are the lucky one! Kerry is a beautiful place - although it's become a major tourist trap in recent years.

It's nicknamed "the Kingdom" because of it's lush green beauty. I was just there this last summer. If you ever decide to come here to find your roots - it's definately the place to go. (Although the average Kerryman is really hard to understand. The accent is completely different from that of say, Dublin. They talk really really fast and string all their word together!)

At any rate, I was in Ireland about 5 years ago with a *eek* tour group while I was still in high school.  We were in Dublin for 2 days and then we drove through the Ring of Kerry (scary in a huge tour bus with all those tiny roads!) over the course of two more days.  (the tour went on to England, Wales, and Scotland.. it was a nice holiday!)

Though we didn't have time to research our roots while there, my mom and I took tons of pictures of the awe-inspiring landscape, and tried to find every out-of-the-way place to enjoy the locals.  I loved it and I dream of coming back!  Hopefully in the next year or so *fingers crossed*  I'll secure a post in either London or Austria.  Either way, I'll take a long holiday to come back!

Oh I know! Those ginormous tour buses are scary.  :o When we were there in August, my husband and I were driving in our car and were nearly obliterated by about a hundred of those tour buses on the narrow Kerry roads. The Ring of Kerry is FULL of them.

It's nice when you can explore the place for yourself. There is so much to see that organized tours don't show you. I hope it works out for you to take that holiday.
