Title: What do you do? Post by bikerbraid on Mar 17th, 2005 at 7:12pm
How about a quick poll - what is your profession, your major in school, your hopes for a career?
I know there are a number of students here, what are your objectives for after school? Stay at home moms - how many kids are you managing - are you home schooling? Tell us what you do when you aren't surfing the net or checking out LongLocks! I'll start....... I've had 2 careers. I have a BS and MS in Vocational Rehabilitation. I did vocational evaluations and training for young adults and adults with mental retardation, mental illness and/or brain injuries. I did this work for over 15 years before I transitioned into my 2nd career of software programming. I now design, develop, program, debug, support and train on the payroll, benefits, accounts payable and general ledger software for the company I work for. I've been here for over 16 years. Non-computer activities include volunteering with the church, knitting socks and mittens, and riding my recumbent bike. |

i am a "bio-engineer" (i studied biotechnology) but i decided to paint. right now i paint my darling's concepts cuze i am clueless what to paint myself. both of us will try the american art market mostly (NY if possible cuze all the artists we like sell there and we don't do too romantic nor decorative stuff like they prefere on the west coast) cuze seems most accesible and doesn't seem to breed starving painters (the french one is not only beyond silly but also nothing sells really high (small formats only). americans on the other hand have big houses with big empty walls to fill ... thank you for that ;D

At the moment I'm a grad slave... I mean, Graduate student... at Ohio State, department of Greek and Latin. Practical terms, this means I teach undergraduate courses like Latin 104 and Classics 101, get paid a stipend, then take courses towards my eventual pie-in-the-sky PhD. My dissertation will probably be on some medieval medical text, working with manuscripts and the like - early indications are leaning towards Hildegard of Bingen's Causae et Curae. I love it!
In the summer, I do whatever I need to do so as to stay solvent and buy groceries;) Eventually, I hope to teach either small liberal arts college, or if I can't get a University post (VERY difficult job market right now), I'll teach High School Latin. Just so long as I can teach, because I LOVE teaching. And I suck at math :-[ |

Long ago (like about 20 + years ago) I did modeling in the Los Angeles garment district. I had long hair even then and I was often paired with another girl who was shorter like myself and we both had long hair. I had long black hair and she had long red hair. After doing that I did a variety of others things, office work and odd jobs right now I am a stay at home homemaker. ;D

I'm finishing my undergraduate studies and beginning my career as a philosopher. I study, teach courses (this spring I've got two courses where I lecture about animal test ethics and argumentation), research, participate in public discussion , and am always ready to participate in different world-saving projects.
When I graduate (hopefully soon) I just change my title to postgraduate and will hopefully continue the same way. My career goal is shortly to produce thoughts that inspire individuals, society and humanity to become better. |

Right now I'm mainly a SAHM and homemaker. I used to work in a bank before I got married and had kids. I married later in life, I have 2 sons, ages 10 and 8(9 in a week). My life really revolves around them right now. I don't home-school my sons attend a small private Christian School. My older son will start public school next year to get involved in sports. ( We live in a rural area). I've been hair-obsessed for years- but I never knew how to care for my hair to care for hair until I found the boards. (Maybe i should study cosmtetolgy?) I volunteer one day a week at my son's school and one day a week at our church-based preschool. I also volunteer at other church activities. I love to read, and in the spring/summer we plant a huge garden and grow: peas, beans, lettuce, carrots, potatoes, beets, rhubarb, tomatoes, spinach. I freeze or can those for use in the winter months. That's about it.

I work for the Inormation Tech. dept. of Southeast Missouri State University (sheesh, what a mouthful). I currently have 2 jobs but, hopefully, that will change within a year or so. 'Cause I'm tired and I need a vacation, dangit!! sorry...ahem. Some of what I do is: I create lists and labels for other users, I print payroll and accounts payable checks, I distribute output to the other users on campus and just basically do whatever the bosses need me to do. Most of my work is terribly boring but at least I have a nice big window with a pretty view. I would love to have a different type of job--maybe working outside, something with my hands, I don't know. This hankering gets especially bad in Spring and Summer. Probably because I can look out the window and see people walking by, enjoying the pretty days whilst I'm stuck inside. Okay, maybe the window isn't such a good thing after all! Other than that, I like to write, I crochet a bit, sew a bit. garden some, and I also like to learn about different religions.

Ooh, great topic! I'm a part time foreign language medical interpreter, meaning I'm required to know how to explain practically every medical term in existence, in two languages. It never occurred to me how extensive this job is until after I'd been working for awhile. An emergency course in medical transcription later, I'm taking appointments here and there with a lot more confidence. for hospitals/clinics/counseling/shelters, etc. ;D Another funny bump along the road was learning the ropes to interpret a divorce case, that was interesting.
And I'm also tech support for a media program. I'm a Journalism-History double major at my uni. Other minor roles and odd jobs: starving artist, humor writer, handwriting analyst. |

Ok I'm a former 1st grade teacher's aide until I had my first son. Now I am a SAHM with two boys ages 2 and 5. I am a volunteer at my son's school and am active in my church. I'm very active, working out 5-6 days a week and love sports. Playing, watching, or going to the games. I'm on the current journey of growing my hair long again and thanks to this site have learned some wonderful tips.

I went to Ohio State! Go bucks! *grins* I'm a vocal performance major/ french minor, studying classical music techniques. I have a passionate interest in early music, but my main love is Opera. I work with the city's Opera program, some Operetta (Gilbert and Sullivan society), and a ton of solo and Oratorio (church music) work. And I also teach voice.. *smiles* It pays the bills until I can start singing at the Met. *winks* |

OMG! That's way cool - I've played recorder for years, was thinking about going professional until I decided I didn't like practice rooms well enough to spend 8 hours a day in one. I studied with Gwyn Roberts (she's in Tempesta di Mare) for a good 4 years, great lady :) It's totally made my day, finding another Early Music buff-ette, and a pro at that.
Unfortunately, OSU's baroque ensemble is on hold this year :( I miss playing in a group, the gestalt is such a high. I'm consoling myself with celtic vocals with harp. At least that works without accompaniment :) |

For the moment I'm taking GED study classes to preapre for the test, after which I plan on going to a local junior college to take classes for creative writing, journalism, and (if they're offering it again) more Japanese classes among other things.
After I continue my classes I think I'd like to someday get a job teaching elementary school kids. I like being around children and I think a job teaching them would be something I would enjoy. I would love to be able to do some writing on the side, and maybe someday even get a book or two published. |

I am a Certified Yoga Instructor, currently teaching 7 classes a week at several local gyms. I love my job, and my students.
I was a vocal performance major in college. I sung my whole life up until about 10 years ago when I lost my confidence in my abilities following an Up With People tour. This past August I began studying voice again. Music is like oxygen to me. So, my last recital was art songs (arias) and the next one on March 31 is broadway show tunes. Joy has returned to my heart. I'm considering going out for community theatre, but I've got a few more bad habbits to correct (from numerous voice teachers in my past) before I feel ready. I hope to continue teaching yoga, perhaps getting 500 hours over the next 3 years (I already have 200+ hours) and to create music for yoga. I also intent to create yoga cd's and dvd's of my classes, including relaxation cd's. I really want to continue performing, I've missed it a lot. Non computer activities include reading, bellydancing and playing various instruments and singing. |

You bellydance, Sakina?
I've always been interested in bellydancing, and would love to learn how to do it myself, but sadly I haven't been able to find any places close to here that offer teaching it. I've always heard it's a lot of fun and a great way to help stay in shape too. |

I didn't know there were so many singers with long hair! *giggles*
Music is such a joy! Sing from your hearts, girls, it makes you all beautiful ladies! Ceridwen, a friend of mine (who used to be the organist at the church I went to) actually runs an early music group there in Columbus. If you'd like, I can give you her name and number.. from what I hear, they've been very busy with performances lately. |
Title: Re: What do you do? Post by Sakina on Mar 24th, 2005 at 9:54pm Bardic Love, I've been bellydancing for about a year. 14 years ago I was in an accident that really messed up my whole spine so I thought I couldn't dance. Turns out, after MANY years of MANY different therapies-yoga being most successful- I can dance :o It's wonderful exercise, working the entire body. I totally get into the costuming as well (Cha-ching). For the last 7 months I've been dancing with a local troupe, Egyptian Cartouche. It's a blast. To get started, I'd totally recommend the first four dvd's of Neena and Veena (Bellydance twins). The later dvd's aren't as good in my opinion. If you give it a try, remember that it takes 500 repetitions to learn something new and to create the nural pathways to make it a habit. So, give yourself time and have fun usuing your body in new and perhaps unimagined ways. You can always contact me here if you have other questions!! PS-Sakina is my bellydancing name ;D |

That sounds great, I'll have to look into getting those dvd's next time I have some money to spend.
The costuming part of it must be very fun, I've seen some great pictures on different sites. If you have any pictures that you wouldn't mind sharing I would certainly love to see. :) |

I have been working for The State of Montana for 20 years now. I started out in data entry but I have been a file clerk for the past 18 years.
My technical job title is Admistrative Technician. I could get a job with more pay but I like where I am. I can work the hours I want (6am to 2pm), most of the people I work with are nice and my medical benefits are pretty good. But, as I tell people my job pays the bills and supports my habits ::) Jerry |

I am going to be an undergraduate reading Developmental Psychology at the University of Essex from October, having passed my A-Levels! (found this out on Thursday: As in Mathematics and Physics, Bs in Psychology and Latin and a Merit in Extension Physics). I suppose I am a jeweller and artist as a hobby, but I am thinking of setting up a site for custom earrings... I was a volunteer in a charity bookshop, but I'm trying to get a part time job in a local jewellery shop, which would be far more suited to my interests!
