Title: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Bardic Love on Jul 19th, 2005 at 5:22am
So, we have a variety of different and very interesting people here so I thought I'd give us a chance to get to know each other better.
I'm curious about a few things.. Where did you all come up with your usernames? Why did you choose your current avatar and what is it(a picture of you, a painting, or something else entirely)? Tell us a bit about your signature under your posts. Is it a favorite quote? Quite a few of us have counters from tickerfactory, so, what is your ticker counting to? |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Anais Satin on Jul 19th, 2005 at 6:01am
"Anais Satin" comes from Anais Nin, my writing persona, since I go by the name of Anais anyway. The sig links point to Medusa's Lair and Visual Sock Curling directions, the Medusa button being a picture of my single braid. and the avatar comes from a June 20 LHC meet with LisaJaney (satin pillowcase lady) and TeacherBear.
Not very cryptic is it? I look forward to reading about others' cool shtuff. Anais |

I'm so easy it's pathetic.
Gabi is my real name, wags refers to the fact that we aim to always have a minimum of two dogs and that's been my name ever since I logged onto my first computer...g |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by juri on Jul 19th, 2005 at 6:47am
Let's see. I took "Juri" from a manga/anime character from the series "Revolutionary Girl Utena." I think she's a very interesting character (especially compared to other characters from different shows) and she has cool hair. In the movie verson of the show, the front hangs in curls while the rest goes past her knees. My avatar comes from a picture of the ex-drummer from the Japanese rock group, Lareine. Machi, that's his name, makes a very pretty woman. ;) And my ticker is counting down to when I reach tailbone. I should change it, though. The length I'm most preoccupied with is reaching waist.
Hmm, I guess I'm the only one having trouble with avatars and tickers not showing up on my screen. If anything weird starts to happen with my avatar, can someone tell me? Thank you! |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Bardic Love on Jul 19th, 2005 at 8:18am
Oh my Juri, another anime fan. The Utena movie was fun to watch, I thought and the animation was very pretty and I loved the music.

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Lisabelle on Jul 19th, 2005 at 11:25am
Mine name really is Lisa, but my Italian name is Isabelle so I combined the two. The avatar is me!! But that pic will change once I get a dig camera (hopes and prays hubby can win one on ebay). I love anime too and am a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki. I loved his Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Kiki's delivery service. ;D ;D ;D

Hmm, I wish I could say my username means something special to me...Unfortunately it does not. I like the way it sounds, that's all! lol As for my avatar, I took the picture to show my 'monroe' piercing. Also I don't have a silver tooth, that is part of jewelry for my tongue piercing. ick...I feel embarrassed admitting that. lol My ticker thing is counting down to what I HOPE my hair will reach, though I am not too sure I can achieve it...47 inches. Random number, sort of a favorite of mine. Mostly I like sevens. ;D.

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by panpeus on Jul 19th, 2005 at 12:15pm
Panpeus has been a name I have thrown around for quite some time. It started when I played EverQuest back n' the day and I have used it ever since.
My avatar is moi...when my hair was mid back and my haircolor was virgin. I use it for motivation. Speaking of Utena, one of my friends cosplayed as her. She did a great job. She commissions costumes for a living...that would be such a nice job. http://www.limebarbcosplay.com/costumes.html |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by bikerbraid on Jul 19th, 2005 at 12:27pm
Bikerbraid - probably pretty obvious - I love to bicycle and always wear my hair in a braid when I do. For years I have stuck the braid (or braids) back up into the vent holes of the helmet. It is a unique style (to say the least) and people started calling me "bikerbraid" for it.
My ticker is the countdown to my six day bike trip in Wisconsin. My avatar is a picture of my hair from August 2004 after I took it out of twin braids. |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by wishing4longhair on Jul 19th, 2005 at 2:13pm
My username is just me seeing all your wonderful people with long hair and having wishful thinking- wishing4longhair.
I am still working on getting a picture of myself that I can make my avatar. The tickerfactory things, for those of you counting the time before your hair is a certain length, how do you know? Is it a estimation, knowing about how much your hair grows in a week or something? Interesting. Bardic Love, what about you? I like your avatar. Meg |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Bardic Love on Jul 19th, 2005 at 6:14pm
There seem to be more anime fans here than I thought. I too love Miyazaki films, my favorite being Kiki's Delivery Service.
Anyway, since it was asked, about my choices. Name: I am a fairly big reader, and I read mostly fantasy, my favorite writer being Mercedes Lackey and one of my favorite books by her is "Bardic Voices". Following the Bardic Guild and a band of gifted musicians and gypsies(the free bards) it's the story about those in the Free Bards, a girl from a tavern, their leader who had once been in the guild, the gypsy Robin. I fell in love with the books and in turn my already existing interest in storytelling, singing, and enteratining grew even more. I love telling my own stories, writing and I enjoy music. It's all a love of mine, so "Bardic Love" Avatar: My avatar is simply some art of Rapunzel from a childrens book. I liked how the image looked when I found it on google quite a while back so I decided to use it.:) Ticker: My ticker is counting down to the day I can be with my boyfriend(it's young love, so of course it's my everything). We've been in a long distance relationship for almost over three years now. Time with him is something I certainly look forward to. |

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by khrome on Jul 19th, 2005 at 6:45pm
How interesting - so many anime fans. But come to think of it, it makes sense with all the beautiful long-haired anime characters out there. My favorite (manga, not anime) is "Battle Angel Alita".
As far as my name, it is a derivative of "chrome". I've had it since '93 when there were dial-up BBS'es. "Usernames" were called "handles" back then because of radio call signs, and sometimes I will still say "my handle is khrome". Old habits die hard. When the web got popular, I was the only "khrome" for the longest time. Now there are a whole bunch of them. :-( I chose "chrome" because I was into cyberpunk-everything back then. Cyberpunk is a genre of sci-fi. My favorite book was (and still is) Neuromancer by William Gibson. Anyway, I also liked "chrome" because of the imagry the word portrays. Of a metal that is highly reflective of colors, yet consists of very little color itself. I replaced the "c" with a "k" because I was into German electro-industrial music, and it made it look more German. lol My avatar is and animated version of the Khrome logo, which I came up around '97 when I revamped my website. It's a "K" for khrome, surrounded by a rotated "C" which stands for Cynde or Cynthia. Cynde |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Autumn on Jul 19th, 2005 at 8:35pm
Autumn is my favorite time of the year. Autumn here in California is very short and very subtle. The air is crisp and the sunlight has a filtered look to it you can miss it if you don't pay close attention, which makes it all the more special. :D

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by PreciousLocks on Jul 19th, 2005 at 9:09pm
My hair has always had golden highlights and now is starting to have silver highlights, hence "PreciousLocks" and the avatar caption. That just about used up all my creative juices and computer skills so I've never gotten around to getting a picture -- or getting up the nerve to have someone take a dig pic of the back of my head. lol
My signature is a reminder to me of who is most important and eternal (God, the One who created me & my hair) and to not get too hung up on something that is temporary (the thing He created--hair, etc). |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Galadriel on Jul 20th, 2005 at 4:38pm
Galadriel in LOTR is my hair idol ;D . Her hair is a bit lighter blonde than mine, but it's still something I'm aiming at...if I don't end up growing my hair even longer.
My avvy is just simple snail...marking my slow progress towards super long hair. My ticker is counting time until tailbone length that is my current goal length. Long time until there, but I can spend it in good company. ;D |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Trisha on Jul 20th, 2005 at 6:24pm
Mine's pretty dull but here it goes:
My given name is Patricia but everyone calls me either Trish or Trisha. I like to look on the bright side of things, hence the sun avitar. I live in Southeast Missouri so that's my sig. *yawn* Told ya--boring! *lol* I think I'll go get me one of those ticker thingys.... |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Sakina on Jul 20th, 2005 at 8:45pm
I'm so happy to know so many of you are anime fans!! Me, too!!!! I don't know anyone around me who likes it, so all suggestions are welcome! In my collection I have Vampire Hunter D (2 movies) and Spirited Away. I try to catch 'em on cartoon network, but they're not on a lot.
My name is my bellydance name 'cause this is my first (and only) board and I had very recently acquired my name and was anxious to use it. My avatar is the sun 'cause I live in very sunny Arizona. I am a yoga teacher and I love to chant so that is the AUM and Namaste roughly means "I honor the light in you" and so everyone who reads my posts are recognized by me as a Divine being. I was hoping to get some good close up bellydancing pics this last time to use as a new avatar, but IHO they're not good enough. Maybe next time. I think this is a great question, Bardic Love. Thanks!!! |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by 13bodies on Jul 20th, 2005 at 9:51pm
My name comes from one of my all-time favorite plays, Arsenic and Old Lace, where between the machinations of 2 sweet little old ladies and their psychotic nephew, 13 bodies end up in the cellar for the duration of the play. It's a comedy. Really. ;D
My avatar is Batman (duh) cuz I like Batman. My sigs are 2 of my favorite quotes that were short enough to fit. Not really that interesting. :P |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by NaturalRogue on Jul 20th, 2005 at 10:50pm
Okay, okay, I hear the clamouring! :) Just kiddin'.
"NaturalRogue" has been a long, tedious adventure to develop an acceptable, screen name which aides to distill my online personna. A name that reflects my inner and outer self. I play D&D (Dungeons and Dragons for the uninitiated to this geek haven) and I generally play either bards or rogues (in 2nd AD&D was theives). My "stage personna" for lack of a better phrase to "my flirtatious side", is that of what I consider a true rogue. Also, as I've always considered bards as rogues (re Danillo Thann, thank-you Elaine Cunningham) and I enjoy crafting, reading, and telling stories, the name also fits my creative side. Since the name is a combination of my roleplay characters and my own innate personality, "NaturalRogue" just fits so very well. There's another definition, but not appropriate to this discussion. My avatar is a picture I took of my hair while it was still damp. I envied all the gorgeous heads of hair and since I had a digital camera, I thought I'd give it a shot. One day, when I feel up to the camera (I'm very photo phobic), I'll take a better picture and post that. My sig is a tagline (for those of you who used to BBS before the internet will understand) that I've always enjoyed. I felt it was rather Steven Wright"ish" and I always get a hoot out of his comedy. My personal text "Dancing at night playing the music of human soul" is tagline that I created and, personally, I feel has a measure of poetry. ETA: I would also like to say, that please, folks, do not think your screen name, avatar, or sig is boring. We are all most interested. Truly! So type on! :) This has become a fascinating topic. |

I would love to see some bellydancing pictures. I love seeing pictures and videos of dance like that and I would really like to learn itmyself someday, however there don't seem to be any places close to here that offer teaching it. I wonder if videos would be useful? I hear it's great exercise and tons of fun. |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by styg on Jul 21st, 2005 at 12:57am
styg - shortage for stygian XX (stygian aka unpleasantly dark, XX aka female), my initial online name i used in the very first board i ever visited and litterally changed my life: a forum dedicated to rock band Placebo, now long dead though. why did it change my life? several members got banned and we ended up together on an exile forum. i met several of those members on a german goth festival (i was then still living in belgium). and there's where i met my darling sweety and live now in france. thing is, they keep calling me styg in real life (to avoid pronouncing my unpronouncable flemish name Lieve. so to a certain degree it became my real name ::)
my signature is just my goals and blah. avatar shows one of my very first LL sticks (taken at christmas 2004). |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by ChiliPepper on Jul 21st, 2005 at 3:42am
Oh, I just love all the background stories!!! Pan, I was really curious about your name, I even googled it to see if it was an acient god or something, well now my question is answered. My husband and his friends would be amazed to see all the posts by women who like gaming and fantasy, sometimes he swears I must be the only woman out there into gaming/anima/fantasy/sci-fi.
Well, anyway I chose ChilliPepper b/c my hair is red and I thought it was a unique way to convey my hair color. Also I live in Texas so chilli peppers are a pretty common things around here. Lucille Ball is one of my favorite comedians and red heads so when I saw her quote I thought it was perfect. |

My avatar is the most complicated braid I've done on myself so far. I hope to be able to update it soon. ;D My signaure is just my hair type. When I finally figured it out I decided I should write it down.

My oh-so-ingenious-and-original name comes from my... being Greek! surprise, surprise ;D ;D Not that I claim being a lady, mind you... 8) I use that handle/name in a travel board (where I used to post often and from where I found LL) and it sort of felt natural to stay true to my online persona. The avatar is a kiss because... well... yes, I do like kisses! :-* :-* The line underneath is a beacon and a constant reminder As for my sigline it's just a flower to show that "I come in peace" plus my *current* target length (2nd version already :D) Queen of originality, yeah :P :P! |

well, My name. I had an online persona, still do, and I did everything under that name, but the persona started to me less me and more persona, so in the end I wasn't on the net, my persona was. So I made new email addresses and got ME into the net rather than just this other persona. I didn't want to use my actual birth certificate name (I've been running from it all my life, you see) but I've always loved the name Kathleen, and its my SCA name (medieval persona for reinactment) or will be as soon as I can talk the heralds into it (must hate heralds...) but lots of people know me by that in RL, so it seemed natural on the net. So, Kathleen it is.

As I explained in my intro here, I used to be known as Amazon on a few boards and was very comfortable with that name but wanted something new.
Maroula, from what I found, was the last Amazon of Lemnos, and it has part of my real name in it, so I thought it would be a good name. http://www.myrine.at/Lemnos/lemnos.html My avatar is the last picture I took of my hair when I met two other longhairs in July. No signature yet. :) 8) |

For years, like since my teens, I was known as Pack-Rat, Road-Rat, or just plain Rat.
Lately, I adopted 'Rodent". I have friends, Snake, Mole, Weasel, Ferret, Dog, and Lizard. Like a good rodent, I am nocturnal, keep everything, my shop is usually a mess, and I store and hoard. The road part was added to Rat as I spent hours riding a bicycle on rural roadways to the tune of anywhere from 4000 to 6000 miles a year. While riding, I would scavange tools and stuff from the side of these rural state roads, thus earning the name, roadrat. It was also my CB handle in the late 70's. I also use the handles Recluse and Reclusive Artist. |

Noticing your new picture, Robin....
You are beyond waist length now? Also, how was SAGBRAW? |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by bikerbraid on Aug 22nd, 2005 at 1:56am
Beyond waist length?? Oh my, yes. The tippy ends are classic length now. I hope to find the right day to take a picture, then trim several inches so the ends will be thicker.
SAGBRAW was great. You can read about some of it in the Parade thread. I'll post a link to our pictures as soon as hubby gets them all loaded with the narratives. |

Well, i'm origanally from the middle east, Jerusalem to be exact (and no, i'm not Hebrew, i'm Arab-a good Arab ;)) Beesan is one of the old cities in Palestine, a very pretty, sunny city, i've never been there as i'm not allowed there.
If you do a google search for -the city of beesan in palestine- you could get a lot of info |

That's great to have such a history for your name Beesan. BTW - good Arabs are welcome, and we wouldn't doubt you :D

I'm sorry that you have to experience that kind of discrimination. A race, religion, skin color, or ethinic background does not make a person good or bad. A person's actions are what make them good or bad. And hopefully a good person will wait before passing judgement on another person. We are glad to have you here! :D |

"Well, i'm origanally from the middle east, Jerusalem to be exact."
My wife has some Lebonese decent. Lots of black hair on her mother's side that seems to gray early in life. Her hair was almost completly gray around 30. Longest was hip length now it's shy of waist length. |

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Sexywitch on Sep 1st, 2005 at 6:50pm
My username comes from the fact that I practice Wicca and that witches aren't ugly, they can be quite sexy in fact ;). For all those who dont know what that is, its a beautiful pagan religion that reveres the earth and celebrates the seasons. We dont cast bad spells or worship any kind of devil.
The ticker below reminds me how much longer til my goal length. The quote is from my favorite fantasy series of all time "The Sword of Truth" Kahlan-the main character, said it. It means that no matter how people percieve you, you are who you are, and that you must accept that. |
Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by SittyKitty on Sep 1st, 2005 at 10:43pm
My user name comes from my nickname from my church. There everyone is refered to as sister and brother. My name is Crystal therefore I am called sister crystal. My preachers daughter has a speech problem and when she would say my name it came out sitty kitty. Even though now she is older and can pronouce my name everyone still calls me sitty kitty or kitty. It just stuck.
My 'tar is me showing off my locks. As for a sig. I just can't come up with one worthy enough to have. And as u can tell I have no ticker. |

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Sexywitch on Sep 2nd, 2005 at 3:16pm
Oops! I didnt even realize that. Sorry, havent been around here for long. I chose the ticker cuz I love flowers and butterflies. Guess we have something in common ;D.

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by greek_lady on Sep 2nd, 2005 at 4:41pm
Ohhhh come on! why did you change it? :-/ I was thinking that a "sexywitch" and a "greek_lady" MUST have something in common to have chosen exactly the same! Maybe I ain't a lady after all ;D ;) ;)

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by Sexywitch on Sep 2nd, 2005 at 9:05pm
Of COURSE you're a lady. I think all the women on here are ladies because they choose to wear their hair long. Why did I change it? Because I like to be different We still have lots in common, we both have long hair and came to this site, right? I guess we are considered "non-conformists" Especially me being an aquarius, I'm that to the T ;D.

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by maggie on Sep 22nd, 2005 at 2:16pm
I chose my user name from a sort of derivative of my real name, megan. Growing up, my friends and eventually co-workers would have all kinds of shorts for my name, like meg, megs, shmegs, meggie, mag, maggs, and yes, maggie. There's only one person that referred to me as maggie, and I liked it, and he was a good friend, so I have good memories when I use that name. The meaning of the name megan is "the strong one". That is a meaning that I took to heart, and I live my life by it. When times get tough and it feels almost like it's too much to handle, I think of that and it truly gets me through. I am "the strong one", I tell myself, and then it becomes the truth. That kind of explains my avatar also, the superman logo, he was also a childhood fav of mine. From head to toe, I was usually decked in superman attire...I don't mean a suit and cape, just logo stuff! He was my hero! (oh yeah, and also cuz i haven't figured out how to post another picture yet...)

My name is Megan too and my dad used to called me (and honestly still does sometimes) meggie pie. I'm not sure where it came from, but that's his pet name for me.
I use Meg in my emails and on this board because it's shorter and easier to type. ;D Meg |

Those are cute nicks! In "A Wrinkle in Time", Meg's father called her "megaparsec" (a unit of measure for distances in intergalactic space equal to one million parsecs - Merriam Webster)

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by maggie on Sep 24th, 2005 at 3:31pm
Nice to meet you, megans! There is one more nickname that I didn't include the first time....pretty obvious why, too! I used to work with a man that called me "maggot", he didn't mean it maliciously (...i don't think), he just thought it was so funny. He would come in to work, seek me out, and yell "hey maggot, how are ya!" He was (and still is) and old man with a very dry sense of humor (putting it politely!). I think that's the only reason he got away with it, besides, i got a laugh out of it. However, out of all the shorts for my name, i don't think that "maggot" is the one i would pick to keep, i'll stick with maggie!

Title: Re: Names, avatars, and signatures Post by bikerbraid on Sep 24th, 2005 at 8:31pm
It always amazes me how people can come up with condesending, offending, or just plain mean nicknames for people. I'm glad you have been able to laugh off the "maggot" reference.
With the given name of Robin, I have endured the Batman and Robin jokes for decades, but the painful name calling as a young girl was robin red breast. Fortunately, few adults would even consider saying that one out loud to my face. (Or they would feel the real rath of an angry woman!! ;D) At least with screen names, we can pick our own, and they don't even have to relate to our real names. :D |
