I heard on CNN that the roof of the Superdome got blown off. I hope everyone down there is safe.

Now, now, it was only pieces of the Superdome roof, and yes, everyone inside was fine. The news on the web indicates that New Orleans faired better than forecasters predicted; however, seeing some of the wire photos, they've quite a bit of devastation.

Thanks, NR! It's good to hear that the Superdome damage isn't as bad as I thought it was. I did see images of other parts of New Orleans. The winds must have been something else to blow out windows and make sides of old buildings collapse like that.

I hear you BB...I've got some good friends in Baton Rouge, and I am worried. I heard from them Sunday night, but I've no idea how they faired yesterday and today in all the storm surge flooding. *sigh* This is all too sad. :'( |

The New Orleans/Biloxi area is a disaster. It is incomprehensible to me. My prayers are with everyone affected in any way. Events like this make me feel so small.
If any of you have any way to assist, via money, collecting necessities to send down via Red Cross, or any other way, please find a way to do so.... Just imagine if it was you who just lost everything. |

And everyone go to Susan's silent auction of those beautiful stix! If I hadn't just bought three pair this morning, I'd be bidding - they're gorgeous!

Oh gosh, last night I kept staring at my tv screen. The damage is horrendous! :o To think my beloved Orleans had to go through this. Love and blessings to everyone who's suffered losses of any kind.

:'( We have friends in New Orleans as well. Right now they are staying at Ft Polk. :'(
This is very, very sad. If seen lots of Tornados and the damages, but this... I have no words to explain how those pictures on TV make me feel. Like BB said, if there is any way you can help, do so. These folks can use anything and everything. |

The amount of damage and devastation is completely incomprehensible to all of us snug in our homes. The more I see and read, there is nothing to even compare. I hope and pray for all affected.

I haven't been home to watch the news, but there was a story on NPR this morning when I was taking the kids to school. I had to turn it off when my daughter asked why I was crying. My soul aches for everyone there.
So who cares if I already blew my hairtoy budget this month. I put in a bid on Susan's auction stix anyway. My family and home are safe, and other folks need the money more than I do right now. |

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Thankfully, I live in the Northern part of Louisiana, and we were all safe from the storm. Some of our fellow statesmen were not so lucky, unfortunately. Our churches and missions are packed with refugees that are, and will be here for a long time. Officially, the city of New Orleans will be closed off for quite some time as there is still 20 feet of water in some areas.
We are in DESPERATE need of things for those hit by Hurricane Katrina. People who fled their homes quickly left behind many things that they needed as they did not know at the time just how long they would be away from their homes. To give you an idea, most of the people here will likely settle up here now that everything they had: homes, cars, possesions, etc have all been washed away. The children will be registering with the local schools here because they say it will be at least a month before anyone will be able to return to New Orleans. We need blood, blankets, towels, clothing, tolietries, playpens, monetary donations... everything, essentially. You can give blood for free, or you can visit www.redcross.org or call 1-800-HELP-NOW to make a donation. Any help is hugely appreciated. |

Greetings.
I have finally heard from my grandma who lived (probably no more) on the shore of Lake Ponchitrain. She was able to get out in time. I have not heard from others of the family as yet. The (I always called it the stupid-dome) has 2- 6 foot holes in the roof. There is other roof damage. They are being transfered to Houston's Astrodome, which cleared it's schedule all the way to December. I was able to see the aftermath of Camile in '69. Grandpa's Gulfport house, boat, cars, and even the yard disappeared. Supposedly, even though this storm was a cat 4 rather that Camile's cat 5 status, structures that withstood Camile went down in Katrina. |

Sir Rat; I'm glad you've hear from your Grandmother and hope you hear from the rest of the family soon.
novusfemina; good to hear from you. I've just spent the last 2 hours helping load a truck with water, baby formula, blankets, and clothing. This truck will head down in a caravan with others. I've also been handling checks and cash that is being donated to the Red Cross. I'd go out and give blood, but I have to wait another 20 days before I'm eligible again. Somehow it still seems too little. |

Ooo BB, this will help immensely, I assure you. Thank you thank you thank you. I took a whole bag of clothes and toys that I was going to donate to goodwill over to the mission today.. some of these poor people have been in the same clothes since the hurricane! Every bit is helping and everyone was glad to see clean clothes and toys for their kids.. :) Out of tragedy comes the outpouring of compassion of others. Every thing that you do to help is an affirmation that you care.. and when someone has lost everything they have, they need that positive reassurance. Seeing everyone work together just... does my heart a lot of good. Thank you. |

I just watched an ABC news special about this. The destruction is overwhelming. My heartfelt sympathy and best wishes goes out to all that were affected. Blood banks won't take my blood because of health problems, but I will see what I can do monetary and supply-wise.

Reading through what people are doing to help is very useful to come up with ideas. I also can't donate blood but this thread helped me come up with some ideas.
Help will be needed for a very long time to come ...g |
