Title: Changing of the Seasons Post by bikerbraid on Oct 7th, 2005 at 12:43pm
Most of you know that I live in Minnesota. We have the distinction of having the most extreme weather conditions of anywhere in the world. In other words, the range of our temps from our winter colds to our summer highs is more than anyone else experiences.
This week (actually in about 72 hours), we transitioned from summer to fall. Monday I rode my bike home from work in 85 degree heat with high humidity. Tuesday night we recieved 8 inches of rain (all of which I swear ended up in my son's basement), Thursday's HIGH was 45 degrees, and Thursday night we had snow showers and a low of 28. Northern Minnesota received 8 inches of snow and had blizzard conditions. I LOVE the 4 seasons we experience - I just wish we wouldn't shift seasons in a matter of hours! The fall colors are gorgeous, however, so I will go out this weekend and enjoy them - after sopping up more water from our son's basement. [He sure knows when to go on vacation. This is the second time he's been gone and hubby and I have had to dry out his basement.] Fall up here always brings pretty colors; crisp, clean air; apple picking; wood splitting; and cool bike rides. It is a wonderful time of the year! |

I agree! This time of year is a nice winding down.
We have a beautiful 4-seasons climate too. I am car-free by choice, so I get to walk everywhere and enjoy the scenery. We've bypassed the fall temperatures completely but the color changing has begun. This is when I'll be switching to a splurge in color photography as opposed to my splurge in 35mm black and white. Happy Autumn Anais |

I love teh four season weather in New York too. However, the weather has been scary a sof late. In the last few years, 80s and 90s ahve been the norm. When 70s and 60s are what shoudl be normal in thsi climate (in the summer). For fall, I remeber that wehn I was a small girl we would have brilliant foliage, but now all I am seeign is browna nd some yellow. Not to mention that it was 80 degrees this week (very freaky for the middle of october). In other regions thismay be normal but not here. On top of that for two months they promised rain and we nevr got it. New york is suposed to get a good deal of rain, especially the little island I live on. Global warming....it's so sad how people here insist on using the air conditioner twenty four hours a day, when in other countries it's unheard of. Come on this is the north! Even when it was 60 degrees in the summer, people ould us etheir AC!. I wish we coudl have autumn back. I feel like thsi is summer weather from when I was a child.

That's some weather, BB!
We don't really have seasons here in the traditional sense. For us the is like this: fall=weather's cooling down; winter=rainy and cold(ish); spring=not as rainy and the temperature is still comfortable; summer=hot and humid. :P |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by bikerbraid on Oct 8th, 2005 at 1:01am
Whoo hoo! We're heading up north for Saturday. The trees should be at their max color. Son's basement was reasonably dry tonight so we felt we could leave it until Sunday.
It should be a gorgeous day for a drive and walk in the woods. Everyone behave for Sakina - I'll be back on Sunday. |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by khrome on Oct 8th, 2005 at 10:34am
KK - enjoy your trip!
Oh no, Sakina is our babysitter? When you get back, you'll have to untie all us "cats" and "skeletons" that she will practice on. :) As far as weather, we get two seasons. Spring and Summer. with about 20 degrees difference between the two. Lovely weather, but I miss extremes. And I've never lived anywhere where there was a real autumn. It's on the evergrowing list of things to do |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Beesan16 on Oct 8th, 2005 at 1:57pm
The weather hear is confusing, last sunday it was about 95 degrees, tuesday was in the 50's, today it 48 so we finally turned the heater on.
we didn't have any rain the past week, but it is [glb]FREEZING[/glb] |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by ChiliPepper on Oct 8th, 2005 at 5:07pm
It seems that Texas weather has been sent to New York and New York weather has been sent to Texas! It has been fabulous here, cool breezy and generally great weather for anything out of doors. I can't wait for Halloween!!
PS Sara I don't know how to get your weather back to you so can I just enjoy it for you? ;D |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Sara on Oct 9th, 2005 at 12:39am
Ahhh!! Chili pepper stole my weather!!!!!! I'm surpised you're not complaining about the New York rain though. Ok thats it...I'm challenging you to a dual...jk. Enjoy it and remember our suffering -_-.
|
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by ChiliPepper on Oct 9th, 2005 at 2:15am
Texans never complain about rain, we get so little of it. What kind of dual? If it involves hair you will probably win since my hair is only 16 inches from crown to root.

Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by panpeus on Oct 10th, 2005 at 2:59pm
Autumn is my favorite time of year. Since the winter is approaching, I try to rollerblade as much as possible!
BB- That's one crazy season shift! Did all of the leaves fall because of that freeze? |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by bikerbraid on Oct 10th, 2005 at 4:10pm
I'm Back!! The colors were gorgeous. No - all the leaves did not fall off due to the freeze. However, they are falling quickly. The oak trees are golden brown, the maples are golden and orange with a few blazing reds, and the poplars are bright yellow. I love the colors of the fall leaves.
Up at our land it was so peaceful walking through the woods. The trails have a light covering of leaves to shuffle through. There has been a lot of rain recently, so the little creek was babbling away. The woods had a distinct smell of wet leaves (and occasionally wet bear). There were lots and lots of mushrooms and fungi growing. I tried to take pictures of some of them - but I'm not a very good photographer. I'll have to take a look at them tonight. It got down to 25F Saturday night. Great night for sleeping all snuggled under the blankets, but a bit chilly when you have to run to the outhouse! ;D This year sure seems like it has been a lot extremes. I'm not sure I want to know what our winter will be like. :D |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by maggie on Oct 10th, 2005 at 5:37pm
I'm glad that you had a nice time, BB- and I do have to agree with you that there have been a lot of extreme temp. changes this year. I'm here in PA, and we have been experiencing some strange weather swings. In the past week we have been from a high of about 80 to a low of 38, it really reaks havoc on the body! The autumn season is so beautiful here, I love the changing of the leaves and the clean, crisp air- but it is also a very short-lived season, it won't be long before winter eats it up...then on into the snow, sleet and ice...yikes! Last winter we were plagued with ice storms that left us without power for days, hope that's not the case again this year, although we are prepared with a generator this year if it is! So chances are that we will never lose power again now that we have a back-up plan, you know how it goes! ;)

Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Moonchild on Oct 10th, 2005 at 5:50pm
It is still amazingly warm around here - 70s :)
The trees have been changing colors for quiet a few weeks already - and it is just beautiful! We have all 4 seasons here, and sometimes they are here all in one day. ;D The favorite phrase around here: What do you mean, you don't like the rain? Wait 5 minutes, it will change. Since we are located between the Alps and the Rhoen (another mountain chain), we have the weirdest weather here. I think that we will have snow by Thanksgiving. :) BB - that sounds very pretty! It would be nice if your pictures turned out good - I would love to see them. For some reason I just love trees, especially in fall and winter time. |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Sara on Oct 10th, 2005 at 7:26pm

Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Galadriel on Oct 11th, 2005 at 4:10pm
I live in Southern Finland, and we have 4 seasons too. :D During the year, temperatures vary from about 30C (86 F )of warmest summer days to even below -25 C (13 F) of coldest winter days. Otherwise our climate is quite nice- I suppose that we have never experienced really extreme weather.
Right now we're having an unexceptionally warm period -day temperatures are still around 15 C (60 F). Trees have gorgeous colors. I suppose it will change soon, and we'll get our share of cold and rain. I love having four seasons- nature is in constant change. :D |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Angel Spun on Oct 11th, 2005 at 8:59pm
BB: You're lucky to live in a place that actually has 4 legitimate seasons.
Out here in San Diego, we have only 2: summer, and not summer. :-/ |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by bikerbraid on Oct 11th, 2005 at 9:07pm wrote on Oct 11th, 2005 at 8:59pm:
Some would claim we have only two seasons as well...... winter and road construction! Our road construction season has been particularly tough in the area I live. Our detours have detours! Many days, I can ride my bike 12 miles home faster than I could drive the 8 miles home. |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Sara on Oct 11th, 2005 at 11:10pm
Ah, thats suprising. I was aslo told taht parts of Sweden don't get the temperatures taht we do, for example it's not as cold in the winter as in New York.
|

Detours with detours ;D OMG ! I know it's not funny, if you have to deal with it, but............. |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Galadriel on Oct 12th, 2005 at 3:31pm
Sara, Scandinavia is warmer than its location suggests because of Golf stream that brings warmth. Sweden, Norway and Denmark are also for most part surrounded by sea, which balances temperatures a bit and cuts the extremes. Climate in Skåne (southmost Sweden) is quite much like that in Central Europe.
Finland is a bit colder in general, because we are farther from the ocean and our climate is more continental (ok, also because Finnish peninsula doesn't reach quite as far south as Scandinavian peninsula does). |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Angel Spun on Oct 12th, 2005 at 4:50pm
lol that sux, BB. Might I add, though, that I love motorcycles?! What kind do you own?
I look to the Autumnal Equinox as the beginning of my favourite time of year. The temps start cooling down (at night, anyway), fun activities are planned, spontaneous romances are formed...or solidified...or rekindled ;) , and all of the wonderful Halloween decorations flood the stores!! It would just be nicer if, like the east coast, we actually saw a more obvious transition. Like the leaves turning brilliant colours, and such. Here, they're either green or gone. :P |

hehe- I was sure I heard a "vrooooom, vrooooom" from one of her posts a couple of months ago ;D |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by NaturalRogue on Oct 12th, 2005 at 10:49pm
That was BB "harrumphing", not "varrooming" at one of our diamond parties! ;D
|
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by bikerbraid on Oct 13th, 2005 at 12:21am
You guys all have much better memories than I do! I don't remember vrooooming or harumphing. However, I would never say I hadn't!
If I'm gonna varooom, it would be in a 1965 red convertible mustang - my dream car. I'll never own it, but I can dream about it! |

This is amazing! I hear the exact words from my hubby every so often. :) What is it about the '65 Mustang? BTW, I thought of you as a Biker Lady for quiet a while too ;D |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by bikerbraid on Oct 13th, 2005 at 2:55am
The 65 Mustang is the perfect car!
The first 2 cars I drove were 65 and 69 Mustangs. The 65 was my favorite. ;D I wish I still had that car - unfortunately my parents gave it to my sister and her husband totaled it. :-/ |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Moonchild on Oct 13th, 2005 at 3:24am
hmmm , I was just thinking, driving around in your dream car thru mother nature in her fall outfit........sure would be nice. Kinda reminds me off an old Grace Kelly movie - her hair is wrapped in a scarf and she drives a convertible........

Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by maggie on Oct 13th, 2005 at 4:14pm
Oh Bikerbraid...you're pulling at my heart-strings!!!
The 65 Mustang IS the perfect car...it is one of my dreams to someday own a beautiful black 65 Mustang. I used to date a guy who owned one, it was so beautiful and he took such good care of it. But unfortunately, like your brother-in-law, he totalled it in a car accident. He was heart-broken ( and nose-broken too), poor guy. Anyway- regarding weather- it is sooo cold and rainy here, we haven't seen the sun in days, and don't plan to for a few more. I'm shivering but refuse to turn the heat on until I can't take it anymore! With oil being close to $3.00/gallon, I'll pile my sweaters on until I look like the little brother from "A Christmas Story"! I keep running my hands under hot water to keep warm, it's not easy being stingey! |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Angel Spun on Oct 14th, 2005 at 6:06pm
Hey, bicycles are cool too. That was my main mode of transportation when I was a kid. Besides, they give you some burly leg muscles!
My mother actually owns a 1964 and a half Mustang convertible. Red body with a white ragtop and white leather interior. From childhood, I have called it Susie. ;) It's a sweet ride. It usually sits idle in their garage awaiting repairs, but every year at Christmas time, my father "fixes" it temporarily, and he, my mother, my sister and a few of her friends pile into it and ride through town with the top down, looking at Christmas lights. I have gone a few times, but with my family and all my sister's friends, it's a rather tight fit. Plus, they all wear those ridiculous fuzzy Santa hats during the ride. haha If they go this year, I'll be riding behind them without the dreaded Santa hat...in my Mercedes. ;) |

I'm going to go back to the season topic (if you all don't mind. If you do, you could go back to talking about dream cars)
I am in the same boat as Angle Spun. I'm from SD as well and would like to know if any of you who get real seasons have pictures of your area and what your fall looks like. Thanks. Meg |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by Angel Spun on Oct 25th, 2005 at 8:07pm
lol poor wishing4longhair...
Don't you just love looking at pictures from the eastern states with all of their beautiful autumn colours? And isn't it sad that we're reduced to that? heh If you don't mind my asking, what area of SD do you hail from? I reside in what's known as "Central San Diego," but I was born & raised in East County. ;) It's quite literally like the country mouse going into the city. |
Title: Re: Changing of the Seasons Post by wishing4longhair on Oct 25th, 2005 at 8:20pm
I've lived in the same house in Spring Valley for 20 years. My boyfriend lives in East County. I go to school at Point Loma and go to church in Clairmont
