Title: Halloween Costumes
Post by khrome on Oct 13th, 2005 at 6:40am
There's been bits and pieces about costumes around the board - I know Sakina has some great face painting in her journal.  What are the rest of you doing this year?  What are your favorite costumes from the past?

Here is the site I got my wings from, in my avatar:
http://www.buycostumes.com/productgridview.aspx?pCatID=makeupandaccessories&cCatID=MakeupPromoWingsnThings

And a better picture of my costume is here:
http://www.loopfree.net/gallery/album65

I also got my elf ears there:
http://www.buycostumes.com/productgridview.aspx?pCatID=makeupandaccessories&cCatID=makeupandaccessoriesEarsTailsandNoses

I can't remember where I got the stockings, but I know it was a lingerie site.

For the wings, I had to sew regular ribbon to it because it came with ugly white elastic.  The wings are heavy, and the elastic eventually caused it to droop and swing.

Here's a woman who has SUPER COOL wings, but I can't find them anywhere

My favorite costume of all time was when I was a kid.  My mother made Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy costumes for my sister and me.  They were the cutest costumes ever.  I'll have to see if I can dig up an old picture of us and scan it.

Another favorite was the dragon costume I made for my son when he was young.  It had a 4 foot tail that dragged behind him.  I had to put a hand loop on the tail so he could go trick or treating and not have it get all dirty.  That costume made it around the neighborhood for many years - I know I saw at least 8 different kids wear it to my door before it finally fell apart!

I'm not very good at adult costumes.  :P  I'll have to live vicariously through all you young, creative types!

Khrome, that's so cool...I didn't realize that was a pic of you in your avatar (you must be picture perfect!).  You look sooo cute in that costume, I love it!

My favorite halloween costume is when I dressed as a "dead prom queen".  I borrowed an old prom dress w/ long gloves from my sister in law, and did my hair so that it looked like an updo that went thru hell!  For my makeup, I made my skin really white and did a lot of black around my eyes, and bright red on my lips with a trickle of blood coming from the corner of my mouth.  And for the final touch...a sawed-off noose hanging around my neck, voila!  It looked pretty cool, and I got a lot of compliments that year, but that's when I had the time to do stuff like that (no more  :'().

Well, of course I've got to jump in here!!!
If you're looking for Adult Costumes, check out www.howcool.com
there's tons of stuff to choose from.  However, it can take a long time to get stuff from them so you really have to plan ahead-but at least you'll get some ideas!

In my journal I've posted Halloween pics from 2 years ago-I have one picture of me from last year (its a terrible picture  :P ) but I only dressed up one night-I was out of town for my friends annual party.  I'll be there with fangs on this year!!

Khrome-I have a pair of wings (nowhere near as pretty as yours) and had a big problem with them flopping around.  I didn't think of adding ribbon!  I tried to look at the last link and got some lady's personal add.  Wierd.

Sakina - that personal ad used to have a picture of the lady wearing some really cool wings.  Since that picture is no longer being displayed, I have removed the link.

Well, I knew Khrome wasn't crazy so the pic must have been there at one point!

As a newbie mod it didn't occurr to me to remove it myself.  (DUH!)  Besides that, I thought I might have missed something when I didn't see the pic she described.

All of your costumes sound neat!  BB, I loved Raggedy Ann when I was little.  I wonder if they still make the dolls?

One of the neatest costumes I've seen was my mom - she had a dress made based on Strawberry Shortcake.  It was all to scale, so she really did look like a giant doll.  It's kind of funny because that was over 20 years ago, and now wearing dresses like that is a popular trend in Japan.  If you want to know what I mean by "to scale", it's kind of like the dresses at this site:

http://www.metamorphose.gr.jp/english/index.html

Here's an article that talks about the trend, if you're interested:

*in idiot fangirl mode* Yay, I love the Japanese gothic subculture! If it weren't so humid and hot here, I'd probably wear that sort of clothes...ah, but perhaps not as an everyday look.

If anyone is interested, there's a Japanese company that sells Japanese gothic lolita costumes: www.cosmates.jp (click on "gothic lolita dresses").

Oh, and www.avantgauche.co.uk has scans of magazines that are about the gothic lolita scene and links to on-line stores that sell that type of clothing.

Okay, I'm done freaking everyone out. *end idiot fangirl mode*

Well, this year for halloween I'm going as a pirate.  I just went to the fabric store today to get some of those coins on a ribbon to braid in to my hair for my costume.  I'll try and get a picture when I do it & let y'all know how it goes. :)

Costume time again. I love having the chance to dress up(what girl doesn't?) ;D

Usually my halloween costumes are pretty simple. I've been a geisha, a hula girl, an angel. This year I'm hoping to be able to put together a bellydancing outfit, or Belle(from disney's animated Beauty and The Beast). I would also consider being a fairy or elf.
Someday, I'll be Buttercup, from the Princess Bride.

Thanks, Juri!  I've never seen gothic lolita dresses-I think I might get one for my artsong recital.  FUN!

You're welcome, Sakina! You can also find things on eBay by typing "gothic lolita" (then click on women's clothing after the initial results come up) or "egl" (short for elegant gothic lolita). Some of the sellers custom make lolita outfits, but I don't know how well made those items are.

Juri:
"Okay, I'm done freaking everyone out. *end idiot fangirl mode*"

You're not freaking me at all! I am familiar with this culture and have followed Japanese fashion for some time. Cosplay costumes have been around for at least as long as I have been on line. (which right now exceeds 10 years).

I have designed a few things based on this trend that are still is sketch mode, (ie, the knee high socks, platform shoes, boots, and shorter, frilly dresses) for some time. Generally I do not show them but if there is interest, I might.

I have read the article Khrome mentioned. I think it's a couple years old. Surely the trend contiues.

An example of anime art from Rodent:

Ooo Halloween!   I love your costume Cynde!
I like the Japanese gothic look! I still have some of my old goth stuff hanging around, nasty boots, long black and white striped socks.  Hmmm... maybe I should give it a go this year?  Were having a little halloween party for my neice...hhehhe.

Rodent:  nice picture! ;)  Here one I did on Oekaki BBS.

My craziest costume was for an adult Halloween party that had a Greek/Roman theme.  I spent two weeks making my ex-husband's costume and had no time to make my own.  That night I went to Walmart and bought brown sweat pants and matching top.  I used yarn to make a tail on the pants and a mane on the shirt.  My hair was long and dyed brown then so I put it up in a ponytale.  I painted my face brown.  I filled one of my many baskets with Trojan condom and called myself the Trojan horse.  It was the hit of the party.

An extra to this story is that I left my purse at work that evening when I  had gotten off work and my husband insisted that I go and get it before the party.  I worked at the county hospital and every Halloween it goes on lockdown at sunset.  The only way in or out was the main emergency room door.  I had to go through the crowded ER,  passed security checks, up the elevator to the 12th floor and into the OR to get my purse.  Every person I knew saw me dressed as a horse :o

Thank you, Lisabelle, Bardic Love, and Juri, although Lisabelle has mine beat by a long shot.

I usually dress up and sit in the yard Halloween night among my gravestones, ghosts and the guilitine to hand out treats. My son and his friends like startling the ones who are too old to trick-or-treat by appearing from the bushes.

They are under orders to leave the little ones alone. My get up consists of a long waist length black wig, a skeleton mask that changes every year, a black cape, and usually a red shirt. I have a pole with a head on it that I keep leaning against the porch support where I sit.

Friday night, I finally felt better after 2 weeks of being sick. Wouldn't you know it I feel baddish again tonight. Maybe it's anticipation of Monday.................

Here's a 1/3 size feeble attempt of art of a character I made up today, Angel Starbright. She has near ankle length pigtails.

awww, Sir Rat;
I'm so sorry you still aren't feeling good.  Your ickiness does not seem to be affecting your art, however!  Great drawing. I feel so artistically challenged seeing everyone elses artwork.

I guess I will just have to live vicariously via everyone elses artistic abilities.  Thanks for sharing!

Cynde thanks!

Hey guys,  I just save some neat spider web hair buns on e-bay. They would be perfect for halloween!!!

Now I must quest for a pattern!!

Title: Re: Halloween Costumes
Post by khrome on Oct 18th, 2005 at 10:45pm
That's a cute bun cover!  From what I can tell in the pic,

Row1: ch 6 to 8 times and join to form a ring.  Dc around ring, 1 ch, 1 dc, 1ch, 1dc .. until you have 8 dc. Jjoin last ch to first dc

Row 2:  6 ch.  dc over dc in previous row, 3 ch, dc over next dc.  3 ch. dc over next dc.  3 ch... until you have 8 dc's in this row.

Rows 3 and 4: Same as 2, but add "2" to ch (so instead of 3ch do 5ch.  and then 7 ch.)

Rows 5 through X: same as 4.  X depends on how thick your hair is

And finish with a hair elastic.

I know these aren't precise but I'll try to write it up better later (also have to experiment actually making one.)  :)

wow its been a while since I dressed up for halloween. lisabelle <3 the Inuyasha pic I can't get enough of the anime. Last time I dressed up was when I browed a costum from my friend cause she said they won't give me candy at the mall if I didn't wear one. lol It was like a peach dress with sparkly.

Cynde Thanks!  I'll give it a try even though I'm not very good at crochet.

Silver_Twilight Thanks!  I love anime, Hamtaro, Sailor Moon, Mew Mew Power... and of course, Inuyasha!  Inuyasha is showed late at night here as it deemed as a adult cartoon, which mean I have to stay up late but it's worth it! 8)

I don't know anything about computer drawing, so I'm a bit lost.  However, I love watching Inuyasha and think that Kiyara is purrfect!

Lately I've been watching Full Metal Alchemist and sometimes Paranoia Agent (not liking it so much).

Long live Adult Swim!

I'm also a big fan of anime, but I don't usually watch Adult Swim. For the most part I prefer it subbed(with the original Japanese voices).
AS does play some good ones though. I wish they'd bring Read or Die back..
