Title: My Master's thesis is FINISHED!
Post by Galadriel on Oct 27th, 2005 at 6:13pm
Just so that your party hats won't get all dusty...

I'VE FINISHED MY MASTER'S THESIS!!!  ;D ;D ;D

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!

It's called "Intellectual Virtues of Groups" and I've been working on it since Spring 2004. After that, there have been moments of joy, moments of desperation and a few nerve-wrecking months when I was certain that the work was going to go straight to "floor below" .  Not to mention busy periods when I didn't have time to think of it at all.
But I did it! Just some formalities, and I'm a philosopher!

WEEEEEEE!

*brings togas for everyone*

*and divans, wine, food and manservants*

*and a very handsome poet to recite poems*

*and a band to play for us*

*frees some wombats to run around the party area*

Let's have a symposion!  ;D

Sakina, now it's just some waiting for a while...hoping that my thesis will get a good grade and I get my papers out.
Then I will enroll to postgraduate program. I have already enough study credits so that I don't have to study anything extra for my Doctor's degree. (As if I could stay out of classroom anyway... ::) )
I have already applied grants for my first research project, in enviromental ethics. In short, I'll try to develop a new theory on moral standing of animals -that is, how we should treat animals.
  It's all really exciting. :D

*passes drinks*

Sweet!!

Just as a suggestion, have you thought about getting it bound at a bindery?

http://www.prairienet.org/bookbindery/

This is the one that I take all of my completed book projects to.  They're great people and would most likely take out of state/international orders.  You just gotta ship your stuff.

The girl who works there is incredibly talented.  It would be a -perfect- way to display your project that you SLAVED over!

Congratulations!

*enjoys looking at people chasing wombats*

I know that faculty binds the copies I give to them- but I don't know whether I'll get one of those or not. If not, it depends pretty much of what grade I'll get  ;) whether or not I want a bound copy for myself. (I'm expecting getting fairly good grade, but you'll never know...) I haven't had anything bound, but there are a couple of places from where I'd still get student discount...

congrats!!!
i know how annoying it is to write one (and in life sciences it's even pretty ok compared to other fields, wrote my own in a month only, 7 months of lab though).

lol Styg, I envied people who get to do experiments about a thousand times while I was working on it. For me it was just reading and thinking, thinking and reading and some writing every now and then.

As T put it when he described my working to his mother: "There she just sits for hours, distant look in her eyes. Yet there's incredible amount of action going on in her head."

Gladriel - Thanks! it's a painting by Lauren Perkins here's her web http://laurenperkins.com.au
oooooooohhh she has some new long hair ones :D

Juri- Thanks for the welcome! I can't wait till she finishes it either, she sits there mumbling, or staring in space, and then she jumps off the couch and jotts some stuff down on the nearest peice of paper.... it's sad ::)

yeah, i was envying people in my own department: very routinous experiments with just changing the beginning conditions blah blah (that's biotechnology, you could make monkeys do it imho). unfortunately i chose to get myself involved with organic chemistry and thought i'd spend there just a month for synthesis of some silly pigment. oh yeah oh yeah how i was wrong. nothing more frustrating to have no results for months (while in biotechnology every result is a result if you see what i mean). it's that i had to base myself on just a few articles written in the fifties or sixties and they were very obscure and leaving out essential info on conditions and blah blah. i didn't even have litterature to keep me awake in other words lol. oh yes, and spending three whole weeks waiting for new products is swell too  ::)
but i fully agrre: writing science is a hell of a lot easier!!! no much thinking involved  ;D (you're not supposed to make thinks up he he).

Thanks, everyone.  ;D Still over two weeks before I heard the proposal for grade.

I can sympathize with your traumas, Styg, my topic was something so novel that there really wasn't much literature on it. At times it was very frustrating.
My worst time was when there was a three month period when I was stuck with a problem I just couldn't solve. I tried and tried, but it just seemed that I couldn't find my way around a nasty counterargument against my theory. And then, one day, I was hanging laundry when I realized what the solution was (and one that seemed obvious right when I thought about it  ::) ).
Sometimes I wish that we could do experiments other than thought experiments. It just sounds more fun than sitting and thinking  :P
