Title: anyone have tips on cleaning fleece?
Post by khrome on Nov 10th, 2005 at 5:33am
kind of an odd topic, but we have such diverse knowledge here it doesn't hurt to ask.  :)

I have a hoodie that is made of polyester fleece.  Although it says "anti-pill" polyester fleece, it does pill - I have an older hoodie made by the same company.  (Pilling is when you get little balls on fabric.)

Normally, the care instruction is wash warm in like colors/fabrics and flat dry.   But that's how I took care of the old one.   I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other methods of cleaning fleece?  Or maybe knows of a way to "un-pill" it and fluff it up again?

Thanks,
Cynde

Sorry, Khrome, I don't really have anything to help you here.  Have you tried a pill shaver?  It's a little battery powered fan with a cover over the blade that has holes in it for the pills to get sucked in and cut off.  There's a receptical to hold the shaved pills.  I had one growing up, haven't tried looking for one lately.

Good Luck!!!

As Sakina mentioned, the shaver works really well.  I have one that I use on my sweaters and my fleece.  Another method that I have heard of, but not tried , is using a razor- like one of those cheap plastic handled ones- just carefully run it over the garment and clean the blades out as you go.  A friend of mine says she does this and it works for her, but I really like the shaver.  I think I found mine actually in a grocery store, it was one of those odd displays you come across.

Here's a link for one:

Thanks for the tip Sakina and Maggie!  I'm going to try one of those little shavers.

You might also make sure that you have turned it inside out before washing.  That helps reduce the friction that causes the pilling.

You could also put it in one of those lingerie or sweater bags for washing -- or even a pillowcase in a pinch.  I use those for a lot of the "delicates" -- can't be bothered to handwash too much stuff -- and it seems to work well.

I do the same thing, either I handwash these items or I turn them inside-out.

Thanks again!  I'll try those.  For my old hoodie, I washed it inside out but it always managed to flip right-side out again.  I bet the a pillowcase will help.

I think I'll try the hand wash first.  Since I wear it over other clothes, it's not dirty-dirty.  It just has dark smudges on the sleeves where it has rubbed up against my desk and such.  So maybe I just need to just spot clean.  Hmm.
