Title: Has anyone done Laser Hair Removal? Post by Curlygirl22 on Nov 22nd, 2005 at 9:11am
Hi Ladies,
I was at the mall yesterday and they had a stand for Hairtodaygonetommarrow.com. I picked up a paper that had info on it. i have been thinking about doing that for a while. I would love to know if the hair on legs and arms really never grow back. Also does it hurt. IS there any side effects. you know the deep inside truth of laser hair removal. you know the things HAIR TODAY GONE TOMARROW would never tell me. I have heard a few ladies i know got that done. one got a rash so i am hesitant. Is it safe? If anyone knows someone who did this or if you have done it i would love to here your story and advice. ??? |

Well, I don't have any personal experience. Just know of a friend who had her bikini area done. She said it hurt a litte bit (like bee stings). In order to have good results, she had to go about 5 times.........lot of money if you ask me. And another thing she was told that she couldn't be exposed to sun light for a certain amount of time...... ::) But that's like 2-3 years ago. Technology is probably changed a lot by now. 8)

Facts:
1. It hurts. A LOT. Really. 2. It depends on two factors: your skin colour (for pain factor) and the colour of your hair (for ultimate removal success and speed). 3. It is very expensive. What area are you thinking of laser-ing? Have you tried sugaring or waxing? |

hey ladies :),
thanks for the info. i was thinking about just doing legs and arms. because i dont want to feel like a man :-[. Lasering hurts? wow i would have never guessed. i have white skin, why does that matter when doing the hair removal process? skin color doesnt matter obviously, but in hair removal? wow. :o im glad im doing research on this subject. i love to hear other people experiences. yes i did try sugaring. i dont like the sticky mess. i use an epil lady hair remover. i do like that best. no mess, a little pain, but i am immune to it ........having used it for years. greeklady have you tried the process of laser hair removal and where? bye |

hi moonchild :),
Sugaring is an all natural method of removing unwanted hair which originated in Egypt at least three centuries ago. Because the process is so simple, salon quality results can be achieved at home with very little practice. The sugaring method is similar to the waxing method, however since the sugaring compound adheres only to the hair and not the skin, as wax does, there is less discomfort. Sugaring falls into the category of epilation. This means that the hair is removed by its roots, below the skin's surface. This is one of the reasons sugaring is preferable to shaving. Because the hair is removed below the skin's surface, it is not uncommon for one application to last four to six weeks. Achieving great results with sugaring is remarkably easy! Here's how it's done: First, the hair to be removed must be allowed to grow to a minimum of 1/8 of an inch in length for the process to work well. The sugaring compound is warmed, not heated, about 10 seconds in a microwave. Then, a very thin layer of the compound is spread over the skin. Next a strip of cotton or muslin cloth is placed over the sugaring compound. In one swift motion the cloth is pulled off, in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Contrary to popular belief, this does not hurt. The cloth strips can easily be rinsed clean, dried and used again. Lotion is applied to the skin after the area is cleaned. Sugaring is a fast, effective and long lasting method of hair removal. It is also very safe, since no harsh chemicals are used. Note from the author: Occasionally people ask me if the sugaring compound is something that can be made at home. While the formula is not particularly complicated, the process of getting the ingredient proportions, the precise temperature, and the cooking time right is something of an art. My Grandmother taught me the process when I was a young girl in Turkey, and it has taken me a number of years to be able to produce a consistency that provides peak performance. Since the cost of sugaring compounds is relatively inexpensive (as low as $19.95), my recommendation is that you purchase one of the better compounds on the market. I got this page from consumerbeware.com hope that helps. |

Moonchild What I want to add to what Curlygirl22 posted is that the stuff you use for sugaring you can create at home using the ingredients you use for making syrup :water and sugar (although I don't know the exact recipe, it is all natural)
Curlygirl22 : Laser works through the hairshaft down to the root, the hair absorbs the laser light that transmits it to the root so the hair is "burned" sort of and falls off in a couple of days. Dark hair absorbs the light, light hair absorbs less light, white hair absorbs no light. Meaning that the darker the hair the quickest and more thorough the result. Skin colour is important for the same reason. The darker the skin the more light it will absorb so the more the pain. If you have done waxing and you are doing epilady then you are no novice to pain, so lasering will be not that much to you. Maybe it won't be painful to you at all. Depends on one's own pain threshold too. There are a few different types of laserlight removal procedures/appliances. Some have an "ice" effect built in that preceeds the laser light transmission which significantly reduces pain. Be careful where you go to have the lasering done. Here it is only done by certified doctors, usually out of the Uni, and the beauty "parlours" that carry that, have to have a special medical license. Don't take it lightly. Your skin could be burned if done improperly. And yes I have done lasering and I am for it because I have always waged a war against body hair and because I am all or nothing, and laser is for good. |

I think that shavign certain areas is okay, but as I've said before. Women only began to shave their legs when skirts were shorter 1940s /30s and its really companies who wnat you to shave so that they can get your money. A woman is still very feminine even if she doenst shave. I mean if that isn't true, victorian women were men :p. However it's your choice, jusyt hoping people are aware that its just another was to get our money. I mean if media got you to think shaving was disgusting, most people wouldn't shave anymore. However, I think lazer surgeyr may be a good option so that you dont have to be spending money on razors for the rest of your life. Besides its a nuisance.

Thanks for the explanation, Curlygirl22 and greek_lady
I had never heard about this before. I think, I will have to give this a try. ....I am getting lazy about doing my legs during the winter month, but I don't want to run around with deer-legs at the indoor pool neither ;D Deer legs: not as skinny, but as hairy (as a deer) ::) |

I'm not disaggreing with you dnd I shave myself, but women have been women and very feminine with hair on their legs for thousands of years....I dunno. I kind of annoys me when people say it's not feminine. Those women centuries ago weren't feminine? It all was started for money purposes...

Curlygirl, I'm not sure if you've done this or if you're still considering it but, I've had it done a few years ago and I love it.
It is painful and afterwards they gave me bags of ice to apply to my skin to help with the pain and redness. It definitely works though, I no longer have to shave or wax my under arms or bikini area. I didn't do my legs because that hair is so fine that it's not noticable to anyone but me so I don't think it's worth getting them done. The procedure is a little costly although, it may be cheaper nowdays, I'm not sure. |
