Title: Oiling Post by wishing4longhair on Nov 30th, 2005 at 6:33pm
I have been using Olive oil once every 2 weeks or so and I have to wash the next day because it's lumpy and oily (for obvious reasons). It works ok, but I'm looking for something that I can use more often without washing it too often.
Is there an oil that can be used daily without having to wash it out the next day? I'm looking for something natural and somewhat easy to find. Thanks Meg |

I've heard that jojoba oil absorbs into the skin and hair pretty easily. I think people just use a couple of drops and work it into their hair with a comb. As for myself, I can't use oils, but I use a pea-sized amount of shea butter on my hair and it doesn't leave a greasy feeling.

I've been using olive oil on my hair too. The first time I applied too much and looked as though I hadn't washed my hair in a month, since then I just rub a couple drops in my palms and only apply it to the ends. As I keep my hair either in a bun or in braids it doesn't seem too greasy, but then my hair seems to soak the oil right up.
The other oils that I've used with great success are lavender and rosemary (smells yummy too). And jojoba is on my list of oils to try, as I've heard it is closest to the scalp's natural oil (hope I've got that right). |

I have tried olive oil, almond oil and any other oil I had in the house. All of them made my hair look oily and greasy. The jojoba oil does not. It is the only one I have tried that I do not need to wash out right away. I have seen it at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and I think they even have it at Raley's in the natural foods/herbal remedies section.

I actually use baby oil (it's just mineral oil + fragrance) and it seems to work rather well.
My hair seems to drink it right up and you can find it anywhere. ;) |

I use jojoba oil almost nightly during the winter. Just a very small amount is all I need to moisturize the ends. Olive oil is too heavy for my hair, but many find it works great for them. I don't recommend mineral oils - the molecules are too large to be obsorbed.

i notice that many ppl use jojoba oil for their hair... and i'm one of them... but another type of conditioning is that when u wash ur hair... dun remove all the conditioner from your ends.. just remove it from the scalps.. but leave 10% of it on ur ends.. and it would make your hair really soft n silky.. :)

I rub a couple drops of jojoba oil through my hair each night and pre- shampoo I rub a liberal amount of Euro organic oil through my hair as an overnite treatment.
(Euro organic oil sold by Morrocco method) |

I buy coconut oil from the whole foods store. Occasionally I put some of this in my hair, work through and put in a bun. I wash it out easily the next morning. Don't know if it helps, but I get compliments on the healthiness of my hair.

I use jojoba oil. I apply just a couple drops of it after every wash (in winter sometimes more often). This amount is too little to make my hair greasy, but it adds shine and nourishes my hair.

I use sweet almond oil right now. It is a tad bit lighter than jojoba oil -- but it's hard to tell the difference.

I like to use jojoba or sweet almond oil on my canopy, but for my much damaged ends I like red palm oil or coconut oil.

I use about three or four drops of Jojoba oil (I also add four or five drops of lavender essential oil into the entire 8 oz bottle of Jojoba oil because I enjoy the scent and I have read lavender is good for hair. But I really use it because of the scent more than anything else) on my waist-length hair once a day. If I apply it in the evening, it has been completely absorbed into my hair by morning. I also apply about five drops to freshly-washed hair. To apply, rub a small amount (and a little goes a long way--if your hair looks oily several hours after applying it, then you might be using too much oil) between your palms and then "wipe" your palms over the bottom length of your hair (I do this to my bottom five inches or more). To be effective, oiling needs to be done a little bit, often. So you might consider using a very small amount of oil every day. I only wash my hair every 3-4 days and my hair still never looks oily, despite my oiling it every day. The key is to just use a little. It really does wonders for your hair.
I also use Monoi oil (which is coconut oil infused with gardenia and Ylang-ylang) but usually only the day before I wash it because it doesn't absorb quite as well. Jojoba oil is supposed to most closely resemble the body's own oils (sebum), which is why it is the favorite of many of us. I have also heard good things about almond oil but I have never tried it. While I see some people on here use mineral oil--and it might work for them--I would not suggest it to anyone. Mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum and I think I read somewhere that it cannot be absorbed into your hair the same way as jojoba and others. |
