Title: Better to wet hair everyday...or not?
Post by Babyfine on Nov 30th, 2005 at 11:26pm
Hi!  My hair, for those that don't know me, is very fine and thin 2afi.  I have chemical colour on all but 4" of roots which I'm trying to grow out.  My hair has gotten much wavier since I've found the boards, from straightish frizz.
I only shampoo my hair once a week in winter and twice a week in summer.( I rotate between Aubrey organics and Jessicurl right now).
I CO or just wet it down the rest of the time. I do a pre-shampoo oil with Euro Organic oil every shampoo and oil with jojba a lot.
My hair is BSL- has been about that for awhile-b/c I'm slowly getting rid of bleached fryed ends, then I will not cut for a long time.
Someone told me you shouldn't wet your hair every day as it weakens the hair shaft.
But my hair looks icky if I don't , even in an updo.
I'm thinking about trying to wet my hair less and less.
I like to wet it down and then scrunch in some aloe vera gel to define my waves.
Should I just wet down once a week?-then my hair looks all fly away by the end of the week.
I live in the upper midwest-very cold climate right now.
What do you'all lovely long haired ladies and hansome gentlemen do?

My hair twin!  :D  OK, mine's twice as long, but it is thin and has waves.

I don't think getting your hair wet will weaken or damage it, as long as you don't stress the hair when it is wet.  Many curly heads wet their hair each day to define their curls.

I dampen my hair regularly to braid it, or remove braid waves.  In the winter I put a bit of jojoba oil in a spray bottle with water.  I shake it up well then spray on my hair to help control the static .  (And yes, the upper midwest dry cold is very hard on your hair. )

I don't wet my hair every day, because hair gets the most fragile when it's in that state.  I try to avoid it because my hair has been colored.  If you're just dampening it to get the hair to lay down flat, that should be fine -- just don't go outside in the freezing cold with wet/damp hair.

I rinse my hair off everyday when I shower. I only wash my hair every four days so I feel icky if I don't give it a daily rinse. That said, I think wetting your hair would be okay, just don't be too rough with it when it's wet.

Thanks for your replies!
I can only wish my hair was as long as yours, BB!
I haven't noticed any damage from wetting my hair down every day- Especially since I shampoo twice or even once a week.
Now that my hair is longer I want to avoid as much damage as possible.

hello,

i rinse my hair everyday and sometimes twice aday. once in the morning shower, then at bubble time bath at night. i was wondering the same thing babyfine. my curls look best wet anyways. i wish i can just zap my hair and it will always be wet, but herbal sprays do work good on getting that job done. 8)

Running water through your hair will not damage it.

Pulling & raking on it with combs, brushes, hands, etc. while it's wet will.

My hair is so oily genetically that I must wash it every day. The results are horrific if I don't.

At the very least, I use a light conditioner & stand under the running water for a looooong time.

I feel your pain about the 2-tone hair effect. Mine was that way for about a year while I grew my roots out. Once they reached 6 inches in length, I cut off the dyed remnants & have been dye-free ever since. I hope your hair recovers as well.  :)

No, wetting your hair everyday doesn't damage your hair.

It's the other things that people do to their hair that damages it like combing, brushing, and being rough with it while wet.

Should I not be combing with a wide-tooth comb when my hair is wet after stepping out of hte shower? I thought this was better than combing when the hair is dry. Please let me know, I am terrified now to do the wrong thing and be harming my hair when I actually think Im not.. or vice versa.
Thanks so much!

Using a wide tooth comb on your hair when it's wet is usually ok, depending on your hair type. It helps to apply a leave-in conditioner before you do this. If your hair breaks easily, however, I would recommend not combing at all until hair is completely dry. Hair is easier to damage when wet.

I agree that it would depend on your hair type. If you don't want to comb your hair when it's totally dry, combing it when it's damp would be better than when it's still wet. Either way, don't forget to be gentle with your hair.

I don't think it hurts anything to wet your hair as much as you want.  For me, combing when wet is very damaging.  In fact,  combing when dry is, too.  I have very fragile hair.

I mist my hair all winter to add moisture. I use conditioner and water or infusium 23. Now I have coconut oil and am going to be using it on the ends , then put it in a bun.Sometimes I wet a scrunchie and put it around the bun to keep moisture around my hair. Winters are hard here in Chicago IL.

Hi Tara, I have lived in Chicago all my life so i guess my hair is used to the crazy weather changes. I had the air conditioning on 5 days ago and today I am wearing a coat an  have the heat on! My hair is pretty strong so luckily it has grown to 50" as of now. I wear buns most of the time and they are really getting heavy at this point. Moisture on the hair adds to the weight too.I just use 6 smaller clips to try and distribute the weight. I do take the bun out every few hours and re-position the clips.( a good time to mist it) I have a good pretzel bun I made and also like the figure eight bun a lot.Im working on more buns that distribute weight. I have lots of buns posted at the yahoo group BUNS and also have a bun page on my personal hair page.

Without buns i could never survive in Chicago!
