Title: LOL Avoided Post by 13bodies on Dec 2nd, 2005 at 7:25pm
It finally happened to me today--someone asked me if I was going to donate my hair to LOL.
I said "No, I'm not. And let me tell you why," and I (nicely) gave it to her with both barrels, from their suspicious refusal to allow their books to be examined to the fact that the wigs are SOLD to the kids, not given. (That one really shocked her. :o) I think I turned her off them but good. ;D I donate to the American Cancer Society and I believe my $$$ do more to help those with cancer than giving my hair to a shady organization who'll do God knows what with it. My hair! Hands off! 8) |

Good job!
I wish more people would research LOL before asking other people to donate their hair. I know that's not she was doing, but still... |

The other day I saw a woman with waist length hair and complimented her—she said she would be cutting it soon and donating to locks of love. When I tried to explain that most hair cannot be used as wigs and isn’t given away she replied that she knew and it is what she frequently does. Perhaps I am not well-informed enough to be eloquent in deterring someone, for I certainly felt at a loss. But how is it that some things in society can be so prevalent as to be accepted unquestionably when knowledge is, more so now than ever, at our fingertips?

Because some people are just that mindless. Sad, isn't it?
Way to go, 13bodies! Rock on! ;) |

Well, even though it supports LOL, at least she's making an informed decision (which is a lot better than most LOL donors). Don't feel too bady, Ollave. You did your best and not everyone feels the same way we do about hair. :) |

Ollave--I agree with Juri, you let her know that her donation is unlikely to end up where she expected it to, and thats all you can do. People who can grow long gorgeous hair without any effort seem more inclined to donate, since they'll get a cute short hair cut for a while, then start growing it out again.
My mother was going to donate her hair, but after I told her that few of the donations end up for kids, and that synthetic is better anyway, she said she would sell her hair, and use the money as a donation for synthetic hair. She hasn't done it yet, but I won't be surprised to see her with all her hair short again someday. |

good work avoiding that...over thanksgiving dinner my sister and step-mom were trying to convince me that now that i have a baby i should cut off my 3 feet of hair and sell it. my sister even told me it would fetch enough money to nearly pay my rent! all i could do was look horrified...even my dad would have flipped!!!

Bluberri--Agh! That's rather insensitive of them, and your sister's comment, man! I guess it's kind of a compliment, but I would have freaked out if I were you. >:(
