Title: Ingredients question...
Post by Angel Spun on Dec 8th, 2005 at 3:32am
Alright, the other day, I ran across a few shampoos with the following ingredients:

1. Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, Yellow 10 and Orange 4.

2. Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, Ext. Violet 2

3. Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, Red 40, Yellow 10

I've read through bikerbraid's list of ingredients, and I think I have a general understanding of the ones used in these formulas. Some are not listed, however...  ??? My question is....what do you all think? Do they sound safe? And if so, which one sounds best?

Thanx in advance for any input!
Love and peace.

They look like they would be fine to use.  As for which one would be better - all three have the same cleansing ingredients, listed in the same order, so they may basically be the same product with the only differences being the color and/or fragrances.

For a breakdown of the ingredients:
Cocamidopropyl Betaine: It does not irritate the skin or mucous membranes. It is used to thicken shampoos, and to reduce the irritation that would result if only more irritating detergents were used. It has antibiotic effects, and is used in personal sanitary products. It has anti-static properties, making it a conditioning agent in shampoos.

PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate: This is a detergent-like chemical that functions as a surfactant. Basically that means that it serves as a "wetting agent" to help reduce surface tension in the water and promote smooth spreading of the shampoo. This is a gentler surfactant than the chemical that is used in many shampoos, sodium lauryl sulfate. Surfactants help to remove grease and cleanse the hair.

Sodium Trideceth Sulfate: Yet another surfactant.  A mild cleansing agent with conditioning properties.

PEG 150 Distearate: A surfactant that serves as a thickener and emulsifier. Coconut Oil derived thickening agent for cleansing products.

Polyquaternium-10: Helps add volume and
conditioning. Acts as a moisturizing film that protects. Excellent antistatic ingredient.

Tetrasodium EDTA: Chelating agent and stabilizer used to prevent physical or chemical changes in texture and appearance of product.  Used in detergents because it bonds hard water ions and prevents them from interfering with their cleaning action.

Quaternium-15: A  preservative found in many cosmetics. It is a water soluble anti-microbal agent that has proven active against bacteria, but less active against yeasts.

Citric Acid: Adjusts the pH of the shampoo to help smoothe the hair. A slightly acid pH is desirable so that the hair will be sleek and shiny in appearance.
