Title: never again
Post by Sexywitch on Dec 22nd, 2005 at 7:40pm
I will never get my hair trimmed at a salon again. Yesterday I went to get my hair trimmed. I only asked for 1/4 inch. But what did she do? Took off 1 1/2 inches. I didnt realize this until this I took my hair out of a french braid this morning.  When I looked in the mirror, it looked shorter, so I took out the measuring tape it it meaured 29 inches. Before I got it trimmed it was 30 1/2 inches. Should I go back there and demand my money back or call them up and telling them I'm never coming back? I know it will grow back, but thats 3 months worth  :(.

Sexywitch,

I completely and utterly understand your pain having gone through that a few times. my hair is still growing out from the last hair butcher(more like b****). Do what is in your gut feeling. To tell them off,  rally in front of the salon with a sign saying ' HAIR BUTCHERS IN HERE..... BEWARE', or call and demand your money back and a lawsuit! GOODLUCK!

I'm sorry that happened to you, it completely sucks that they would do that.

I stopped going to salons because of my 15 minute spiel about how long its taken me to grow my hair long, and how important it is to me to keep it long.  Now I trim it myself, or have a very trusted friend do it for me.

Here, here, Valerie!

I don't think I've ever had my hair trimmed in a salon. Since I was very young, my mother always took my sister, herself and I to a friend of hers for all of our hair needs. I still go to her to this day.
In the first place, she actually bothers to ask how much I want taken off at the time, and then follows through. I have never come home with any less hair than I've wanted, thank God.

But that doesn't mean that I can't sympathize. It sux to lose so much that you've worked so hard to grow.  :(

Thanks everyone for your support. I think I'll just call them and let them know I wont be coming back. While she was washing my hair, she asked if I wanted to take a lot off or just a trim and I said just 1/4 inch. That should have been a warning sign. When I was in the chair she asked me how long I wanted to grow it, and I said as long as it would get. She had this look on her face like "how weird" At that point I should have ran. LOL.

What a shame!  Here's what I think of most salons:

Calling the manager and letting them know you are disappointed that the stylist did not listen to you would be a good idea.  They won't know how you feel if you don't tell them.

I am so sorry they cut your hair too short.  I have heard so many horror stories about this (and had a couple bad experiences myself) that I only allow my husband or my mom to trim my hair.  Both of them understand that I do not want to lose any length.

I am sorry to here what happened. :'(  Bloody hair dressers!  I just trimmed my own hair with the help of hubby.  Maybe next time you can do it yourself?  I had to pluck up the nerve to do it but it worked out okay.

BB, you're a riot, LOL!!

I'm afraid to trim my hair myself, but I hope I can get the courage up.  When My hair gets longer, I want to.
Here's what I'm afraid will happen-I will get it uneven, and keep having to trim until too much is off :o!
The last  2 stylists I have- have taken off just what I wanted because I was very adament about what I wanted -NO MORE THAN X AMOUNT!!-
I think past stylist took off too much because I wasn't firm enough about what I wanted.
But I would still like to learn to trim myself so I don't have to pay the $$ for one thing.

I planned on trimming my own hair after my layers grew out, the shortest one is just past my shoulder. I'm afraid if I trim my hair with layers, I will mess up.

I'm sorry they cut your hair too much. Unfortunately, that's not uncommon- most hairstylists don't appreciate long hair and don't really even know how to take care of it properly. I'm hoping that your feedback will remind that one salon of importance of listening customers, though!

Give home haircare a try. I did, and my hair is doing better than ever. If your goal is to grow healthy and natural extra long hair, there's not really much that a stylist (whose work mainly consists on doing trendy cuts and chemical treatments) could do for you anyway.

(Not to mention that hairtoys are FAR better investments ;) ).

  Poor Sexywitch!!!

I soooooo hate when that happens, I think that some 'dressers do it on purpose, almost out of spite because you have long hair...I swear it!  I think you should demand that she let you take a few inches off her hair against her will...a hair for a hair!  >:(

On the bright side, your hair is probably very healthy right now with all that taken off, so look at it as a fresh start and chance to really pamper your hair.  I bet your ends feel great and look nice & healthy...it'll grow back in now time, I promise!  ;)

I'm so sorry that happened to you!   :-[  I won't go near a salon because I'm afraid they'd cut off too much of my hair and things would then get...unpleasant.   >:(

I had my brother trim my hair over Christmas and he did a great job.  It took two minutes.  I've also heard some people say that they go to the barber shop because the barber will follow instructions and charge a lot less.

If you're ever in Lexington, though, I highly recommend my brother.   ;D

You know... on the brightER side, 1.5 inches off isn't terribly drastic... I've heard of salon disasters involving more than 4 inches beyond the requested removal length :o

...but I really feel for you though, any loss of length is not a pleasant thing.

Best of growth to you

Anais

I'm sorry that happened  :-/
I feel your pain, i had more than one experience with those people, but the most recent was worst (with the length thing i mean)

About two years ago i planned to get some layers and bangs but keep the length-it was about 3 inches above waist length- i told her to only remove about an inch from the length, i'm just sitting there then my mom comes in and she says "you didn't say you wanted THAT much cut off" I almost burst into tears before i knew what happened (and didn't want to know) then the lady just said calmly "don't worry, she's young it'll grow back it's just hair, and besides she has split-ends" Like it was any of her business, like she was the one who dreamed of long hair since she was five >:( >:(

You know how short she cut it.....a little above BSL :(
I practically yelled at her, made her finish her work- no use leaving with uneven hair- didn't leave her a tip..as if and never went back there....AND(maybe it was cruel but i was mad) told everyone i new who went there not to go there.

The other experiences were with not liking the cut, it was like the lady was experimenting with my hair...but i won't get into that. ok, i should shut up now :-X

Anyway...I hope by now your hair has grown half inch :)

Oh, Beesan!  I couldn't believe it when I read your post.  How awful!!!

I suggest that if you need to go to a salon, ask if they have someone who specializes in long hair.  I have to ask for someone who specialized in curly hair, 'cause you don't just cut curly hair the same way as straight and have it look nice.

When I got my trim last month, I told the hairdresser I intend to grow atleast to BSL and then probably waist length she looked at me like I was mental.  Her prob, not mine.  Lucky for me she did a good job and only took off what I requested.

OMG Beesan...that's unbelievable!!!  She probably had short ugly hair, didn't she?  It must have felt like she took a bazillion inches off!  I was nearly in tears over my last cut of 4" & that was by my choice...I couldn't imagine if I wasn't expecting it & it happened...oh I feel faint!

Well, Sexywitch...Beesan's story should make you feel a LITTLE better!  :-/

Thanks Sakina, and maggie :-*

LOL maggie, :D she DID have short hair like a little girl cut it-well SHE probably cut it herself... ;D

The most annoying thing was how calm she seemed >:(...

)Like what Anais said, I had over 4 inche soff and I cried when I got home. Also the people doing my hair kept on giving me looks of disgust (well the female...the guy who finished off didn't. But I know that I onyl aksed for an inch...thats it...I'm trimming it myself ..
Well afte rthe trim (last january) my hair wa smidback. That's the shortest it had been for many years since it was previously waist length. But now It's back to wasit length a year after. I'm giving my ticker thing "two years to classic length" but I'm confident I'll reach it before then (doesn't hurt to be generous with time.
Oh! I also remember then basically ripping through my hair and finding quite a few split ends....I'm never goign back to that place...I'll try my luck witha na east Indian salon instead.

So sorry about everyone's bad experience with hairdressers.  The first one I went to, when I was really little, was a friend of my mom's.  And she was a lot like the lady Beesan described.  I didn't get my hair cut for a long time after that.

When I got to college, I started hunting for a hairdresser again.  What I found is you do get what you pay for.  Not that that is ALWAYS true, but it was true in my experiences.

Several times, I found someone that I liked, but then they would move on to a different area.  If that happens to you, always ask them who they'd recommend to take you on.  That will save you a lot of searching time.

Another tip I read was to look for a hairdresser with long hair.  They are more empathetic.
