Title: Hi! I'm new! =D
Post by drenni on Dec 30th, 2005 at 4:05am
Hi! I found this site on ym.com. I'm fourteen years old and I'm from New Hampshire. My hair is about 23 inches long. It would be longer but I asked my mother to trim my hair one day about a year ago and she ended up cutting about 6 inches off! eh.

My hair could be red, it could be brown. Depends on the light/day/my mood/season. But I'll call it reddish-brown. =D It's usually wavy and I don't really like to use any products on my hair.

My favorite accessory would have to be the hair tie. I'm a gymnast and me and the hair tie are best friends. The only problem I have with my long hair is it getting in the way. I also can never find hair tie's that will actually keep my hair up without me having to fix it every few routines at the gym.

I joined because I like knowing that plenty of other people are growing out their hair. None of my friends are! With a group like this I might not get tempted to chop my hair off when I get frustrated.  ;)

My goal is to grow my hair long enough so I can donate the minimum 10" to Locks of Love and still have somewhat long hair!

Here's a picture:

Thanks!   =D

Welcome!
Your hair looks beautiful - thanks for sharing a picture.

What kind of hairties are you using right now?  Your hair looks to be rather thick which is usually fairly easy to keep hairties in.  Just make sure there is no metal or anything else that will catch the hair and possibly damage it.

If you really like long hair, please reconsider your donation to Locks of Love.  There are several threads on this board regarding locks of love.  If you are planning on cutting your hair and don't really care if it helps anyone or not, go ahead and donate it to LOL.  If you are ready to cut significant length for your self, go ahead.  But LOL may not be the best place for your hair.

The issues that many people have with LOL include:
1.  Their accounting practices as a not for profit do not meet the BBB standards.
2.  Most of the donated hair is sold, not made into wigs.
3.  Only a very small number of wigs are actually made.
4.  The wigs are not always free to the recipient.
5.  Human hair wigs are not recommended for children undergoing chemo-therapy.

Glad to have you here!

Welcome, drenni!  Your hair is gorgeous!  Goody makes hairties with little rubber grips on them so they don't come out.  Scunchi makes hairties with different strengths, like soft and stay-put.  Check 'em out at your local drug store!

Thanks!
Ahh! I completely forgot to say my name! I'm Adrienne, by the way.

I don't remember what hair ties I bought last.. They were either goody or scunci. If I wrapped them around my hair three times, they would fall out. But my hair is to thick to wrap them around four..

I looked at the ones with the rubber grips! But I didn't pick them up because I thought they would "stick" to may hair and pull it out. But I'll give them a try!

I'll have to check out the posts on LOL.  :)

Hi & welcome, drenni!  :D  You have very beautiful hair, and are a very beautiful girl for that matter.  I'm glad you decided to join us, all these wonderful ladies (and a few guys, too!)  are the absolute best "hair support" you could hope to find.  You have great intentions with wanting to donate your hair to LOL, but unfortunately I have heard about their shifty practices, too.  It's really a terrible shame.

A-n-y-w-a-y...I look forward to sharing with and learning from you!  ;D

Hey Drenni!  I used to be a gymnast, too.  But that was a long time ago. ;)

Maybe you should try a braided bun.  Just 3-strand braid your hair, and then put it into a cinnabun.  That way, the hair won't be pulled too tightly and can still stay in place.

Also, about Locks of Love...BB basically hit the nail on the head.  If you still want to help, a money donation to the American Cancer Society is a good option, or even trying to get into candy striping or volunteer work would be great for the kids, too.  Most hospitals have volunteer programs.

Welcome Adrienne :) When people ask if I'll donate my hair, I tell them I donate in other ways. Blood, money, clothes, volunteer time and energy... all are great ways to go. I hope you'll reconsider and keep that lustrous mane of yours!

Greetings and welcome, drenni.  :)

Wow, you remind me so much of my 14-year-old cousin I can't even tell you! Your hair is lovely, and is about the same length that hers used to be before she cut it all off.  :'(

I was in gymnastics for several years while growing up and always just wore it in a simple ponytail back then.
Although, I recently bought a pair of velvet scrunchies from a store called Bliss (I'm not sure if they have one in your area) and they don't slip out like most velvet scrunchies will. They would work great for gym!

Anyway, welcome to the boards. Sorry for the delayed greeting, but I've only just recently gotten my computer back up and running.
