Title: Maintaining Length or Growing Longer? Post by mrsncook on Feb 3rd, 2006 at 12:57am
I am 30 yrs old and have been absolutely obsessed with long hair ever since I was little. Now that my hair is long, I am trying to decide whether I should maintain the length or try growing it a bit longer.
I remember my grandmother had long hair, and I used to comb it over and over. (Thank goodness for patient grandmothers!) I remember in elementary school there were a couple of Indian women whom I met who had gorgeous long silver/white hair in beautiful updos. I was absolutely fascinated with their beautiful saris and their glamourous "crowns", and I thought that they had to be what a princess would look like. I loved having my hair a little longer then, though I was tender headed and thought my mother was torturing me. lol I had long hair most of my life until about 10 yrs ago when I gut it chin length for a while. I grew it out, but 3 years later decided I needed it short since I was caring for 3 children under 3. (It seems every time I had a child I got a wild notion to cut my hair unti they were older.) Now that my girls are older and are no longer trying to swing on my hair, I have dedicated myself to growing long hair once again...this time probably permanently. I loved the look of my chin length hair and the ease of styling, but honestly I missed my long hair very much. I feel more like a woman with longer hair, and I find that it is easier and faster to do every day. My hair is currently to my tailbone, maybe an inch past, and I am finding it to be a bit challenging. I am wondering if I would be happier keeping it this length or growing it a bit longer to see how it might work. I find it a bit challenging, because sometimes I forget to move it before I sit down, and often times no matter what I do (such as braiding it loosely before bed) I end up sleeping on it and hurting myself. lol I have to remember to tie it up before I clean the house, because one time my hair came loose and fell into the bucket of dirty water when I was scrubbing the floor by hand, which needless to say caused me to stop and wash up. lol I am wondering if this is just one of those odd in between stages when you get used to a new length or if I would be happier keeping it trimmed to the current length. I would like to hear what you other long haired women have to say. If you have hair longer than your tailbone, why did you decide to grow it longer? If you have hair to a certain length and maintain it, why did you choose not to grow it longer? Thanks for your opinions! :) |

Decisions, decisions.
I found when I reached tailbone length that I had to "contain" my hair most of the time. Wearing it loose was very difficult since my hair tangles sooo easily. I had intended to maintain my length at waist length, but never got around to trimming, so it reached tailbone. Again, failure to trim, and my hair reached classic length. Part of me is curious to find out how long my hair will grow. I seem to have the "no trim" down, but my hair is in a resting phase and growing minimally right now. I may have reached my terminal length, but I'm not sure. Trimming would neaten up the ends and give a thicker appearance. I probably should trim about 2 inches, but I seem to have a hard time getting a pair of scissors anywhere near the length of my hair. ;D I wear my hair loose for only short periods of time. If I want to show the length, I wear it in a ponytail with my Bunjii ties spaced down the length. This keeps the hair from tangling. As you can see, my decision to grow my hair this long was more of a decision of inaction. ;D |

My hair is currently mid tush and for the most part I let it hang loose although I do pull some up in a barette so I can see when I move around. you may try braids or puting it up in a bun( i do this to clean house or if i skip a washing) I got used to my hair being down but im gentle with it most of the time.

Thank you for your replies. :) It is nice to be able to get some other opinions.
When I wear my hair down it is only in the winter time, because I get too hot in the summer. I might pull the front back with a barette to keep it out of my face, or I spritz it lightly with my hair spray. I sometimes braid it for a casual look or pull it into a ponytail at the back of my neck for bumming around the house. Mostly, though, I pull it up into a bun. It's getting to a point where the hair things slip out, though, so I might have to start using bobby pins or pull it into a pony tail first before putting it into a bun. I think maybe longer hair sticks might be one cure for that. I have lots of different ways to do my hair, but a bun is by far my favorite. It is so easy to do and holds all day. I haven't done twists in a long time, because I can't get all my hair turned under. lol So having a bun can go from casual with a plain hair thing to elegant with a fancy hair thing. My husband thinks I'm silly, but I hope to have a different set of hair sticks for each outfit. lol |

If you're curious, why not grow it longer. If you discover that you don't like it, you can always cut it back.

:)As long as your happy with your hair, that should be what you stick with.
When I first found LongLocks my hair was 21 1/2 inches. about a year ago. My hair is now 27" and I find I get tired of it and think of cutting it but don't. I have added long layers a year ago and am slowly letting them grow out. I trim my hair my self, I'll part it down the middle and cut what I want and then put my head upside down look into a mirror and trim it from that angle to make sure it is straight. My niece told me this was the way to know for sure it is even. I haven't been on for a long time, how is everyone? Brad |

My hair isn't that long compared to the rest of you(it's BSL) but I know what you mean about loving the chin length ease but missing your long hair. I had a chin length bob 21/2 years ago, too, and loved the ease(and the fact I could be out in wind w/o a scrunchie) but missed my longer hair. I've never had hair longer than this(BSL) at any point in my life and always loved long hair, too. I had a friend in school who had thick straight classic-length long hair- in high and middle school- I always tried to grow my fine thin, wavy hair-but usually gave up at BSL when it got icky looking.
But I didn't know about hair care-then. I say, grow it longer and see if you like it- you can always cut it- that's my motto. I'm trying for waist- I figure if I don't like it- then I can always cut it back. |

oh yes tough decision ... i have a big love/ hate relationship with my long hair. i am always seeking to have what i have not and then when i reach it i get bored of it cuze there's nothing to it anymore or it suddenly seemed better before. tailbone looked like such a nice length and once i reached it, it just looked like a curtain of hair. i hated my layers, grew them out with tons of cutting and guess what: since a few days i've been wondering about cutting in soft layers since i hate my hemline ... but why do i tell you all this: growing hair is so much fun and once one reaches a certain goal, one might not know what to do anymore ... i think it all depends on the obsession of growing. i had a big one - obsession that is - and no matter how my hair looks, it always seems i hope for it to look better by changing something.
so if you wouldn't want your hair any longer (cuze tailbone is indeed already a pain now and then) ... just try out all hemlines possible 8) |

I have always wanted long hair and hopefully am going to get it. This site has really helped me on my goal to get long hair. At the moment i have shoulder length hair but it used to be longer until my hairdresser talked me into cutting it off. My hair only needed trimming but she didn't think so :'(
I have deep conditioned my hair a few times so it is now in good condition but does anyone have any tips for to make it grow a bit quicker. I air dry my hair but have made the mistake of brushing my hair sometimes when it is wet but now a have a wide toothed comb ;D. When i do air dry my hair it is really quite frizzy but when i wake up after sleeping it is really smooth and straight does this mean my hair is in good or bad condition ? |

Welcome Smallsweetgirl! Sorry to hear your hairdresser convinced you to cut more of your hair than you wanted. This is a fairly common problem for people trying to grow out their hair.
Taking good care of your hair is important if you want to grow it long. We have a number of excellent suggestions listed in the Ultimate Guide to Growing Long Hair. Your frizzy hair after air drying might be the result of your hair being over-dried and needing more moisture. Using some light leave-in conditioners or a light oil such as jojoba oil on your hair while drying. |
