Title: aloe vera gel?
Post by Ophelia on Mar 3rd, 2006 at 2:40am
hi ladies and gents!

hopefully someone can help me with this....lots of people talk about using aloe vera gel to tame their hair but no one has said which kind to get. i've got aloe vera skin moisturizing gel for sun-damaged skin. would this be safe? does it have to be a super-pure aloe vera gel? i've never tried this before and i'm completely clueless. i'm trying to find something that isn't hair spray or mousse ( i loathe that stuff ) that would keep my hair from escaping its braid etc..
                                               thanks so much,

Hi Ophelia! Yes, you can use the aloe vera for sun damaged skin.  I buy mine in a huge container in the suntan lotion section every summer...it lasts me until the next summer.   :)

It will definitely help tame your hair and keep from escaping your braid, gently and naturally.

I would think as long as it doesn't have any lotions or anything else in it you'd be fine.  The kind I use is just a clear gel that states that it's pure aloe vera gel on it.  I picked it up at the drug store, so it sounds like the stuff you have is OK.

Check to see if the gel contains alcohol, if it does, don't use it on your hair.  Many of the skin aloe vera gels have a significant amount of alcohol which will dry the hair.  Artificial coloring should also be avoided.

I buy mine at a discount store - I think the brand is Fruit of the Earth.

Yep, the brand I buy is Fruit of the Earth, and I get mine at Wal Mart (although I don't use it on my hair anymore).

thanks for all the great info, everybody!!!

unfortunately, i'm pretty sure my aloe vera gel does have alcohol in it. ( sigh ) and it is green. well, it was a thought. sounds like i need to keep looking. my hair gets so dry anyway, i don't want to take any chances with it.

                                                 thanks again, everybody.

p.s.
i know a lady who has a braid that is well past her knees. needless to say, i'm very jealous.
