Title: Washing when working out Post by nancyn28 on May 11th, 2006 at 12:45am
I'm sure this is a repeat question and for that I am sorry :-[.
I'm sure that most of you work out. How often do you wash your hair? I feel gross after a good sweaty workout but I don't want to wash daily. Is there any way to freshen up? I've gotten used to washing once a week due to laziness/depression, but now that I've got to start moving I don't want to feel like I'll stink. Thanks in advance for any help to be offered. |

I guess I'm horribly lazy, but I don't wash or even rinse my hair after working out, unless it's a wash day (I wash my hair twice a week). I do make sure that my hairline in both front and neck gets a little wet when I take shower for the rest of my body, but that's it.
I haven't noticed any negative effects from not washing: my scalp doesn't smell bad and my hair doesn't get dirty any faster than it did before I started to exercise this much. Some people who want to freshen up, just rinse their hair with plain water. It is enough to get rid of the sweat. Or you could mist your hair with rose water or spritz it with a mixture of water and some nice smelling essential oils. |

Summer biking gets me pretty sweaty. I will usually rinse my hair after biking if I don't have time to wash and condition. This is usually enough to keep my hair from looking greasy. During the winter I can usually go 5 - 7 days between washings. Summer is usually less, but that is due to almost daily biking, so it gets down to about every 3 days.

Work out........work out? Hmmm, seems to me I've heard those words somewhere before but I just can't quite put my chubby little finger on it... ::)

After an intense work-out, washing everything is best. Sweating only purges your pores if you wash the sweat off afterwards. Otherwise, it settles on your skin and eventually back into your pores. :P The one exception to this, of course, is swimming.
Personally, I wash my hair every single day, so I'm not really sure how you'd go about just "freshening up" without it. But everybody's different...at least in that regard. Perhaps you could just try running cool water over your hair after working out. That's what I always do after swimming/boogie boarding/etc. to remove the salt or chlorine. Maybe you could run a conditioner through your hair and then rinse it out. Just a thought... |
