Title: Oiling Hair Post by bikerbraid on Jun 12th, 2006 at 5:00pm
We so often have people ask about oiling their hair, I've added a short piece on how to oil your hair in the Tip for the Week area.
If there is anything you want added/changed, let me know. |

Good piece on oiling, BB. I often oil my hair before de-tangling because it helps my hair slip and de-tangle easily.

PreciousLocks - are you oiling your hair when it is wet before detangling, or is it dry?

usually dry. the conditioner gives enough slip when it is wet to do a detangling (more damp as I wait as long as possible before doing any combing)

I read about oiling in the Tip of the week section and was wondering, is there another type of oil that is just as good for coarse hair as olive oil? I must be allergic to olive oil because it breaks me out pretty badly. :(

Hi La Diosa! :D
You can try shea butter, that would be very good for your hairtype. Also emu oil as well (a bit pricey though). |

I'd recommend coconut oil, LD. My hair is medium texture but wavy so its dry. In the past I have mixed equal amounts of heavy duty conditioner with olive oil and applied that as a treatment.
Sesame oil is another option, used often in ayurveda. Check out www.banyanbotanicals.com for some of their oil blends-they have herbs in an organic sesame base that are good for the scalp and hair. Right now I use Bhrami oil, there are 3 herbs that are particularly good for the hair and scalp, bhrami being one of them. Although our hair is dry, it can be fragile so I personally think olive oil is too heavy. I stopped using it at least a year ago. |

I've tried shea butter recently and didn't like it, it felt too greasy.
I was doing a little research, and think I might try coconut oil but, I'll definitely check out that website first. Thanks for the tips! |

La Diosa, you might want to try camellia oil too - here is a site where you can get a small free sample (well, you pay for shipping.)
http://www.camelliaoil.com/ As far as shea butter, I used it sucessfully for several months, but my hair seems to be taking better to camellia oil at the moment. When I first tried shea butter, I was using too much and also had the greasy feel. The trick is to just use a tiny amount - about the size of a pea. BB - the article is great and very helpful! I've only oiled my ends after a wash, but I think I'd like to try the nightly oiling come winter time. |

That is were I get my Camellia oil too! They have some really nice stuff on that site. The boxwood combs are a drool!

I tend to have generally oily hair - not lately, because of these highlights, but my hair is extremely fine and when it isn't colored it is usually fairly oily already. What might be a good frequency to do this? I don't want to be a greaseball but I know I should probably oil it some...

Start by oiling the night before you plan to shampoo your hair, that way you can tell if you used too much oil or not. Then adjust accordingly.
In the winter I oil almost nightly, but in the summer I oil only after shampooing, so that would be once a week, sometimes twice a week. |
