Title: getting longer...and more unruly Post by FaeDreams on Jun 26th, 2006 at 12:20am
As my curly hair gets longer it is getting tougher to keep looking nice. does anyone have any tips I can use? It keeps getting frizzy and messy looking.
Thanks~~jax |

Hi. I've got wavy hair and am having really good results with Ouidad's products. You can find them at www.ouidad.com.
You may be needing a deep treatment to moisturize the hair to help it not fly away. Good luck and let us know what works for you! |

Frizzy and fuzzy hair can sometimes mean it is too dry. You might try using a leave in conditioner to add moisture to hair for better control and management.
I've also found that oiling my hair (using very very little oil) also helps control the flyaway hair and frizzy ends. |

You have already received some excellent advice.
I'd just add, that it is also possible that your hair has reached a new length stage. In different lengths, our hair behaves naturally differently, and when you have reached a new stage, you might need some time to adjust to it. If your hair has become "difficult" recently, as it has reached its present length, this is one possible reason. If this is so, good news is that with a little time and experimentation, you will learn new requirements of your hair and will be able to enjoy it again. There are a few particularly "notorious" stages in growing hair- stages that many people find particularly difficult to adjust into. "Medium length" from ears to shoulder length is one such stage, and reaching BSL is another. Most common problems are that previous favorite styles become suddenly impossible to make work. But the texture and/or the general appearance of one's hiar can also change. For example, when my hair reached shoulder length, it became very poofy- when down, it resembled a lion's mane. Now that my hair is BSL length, it lays more flat (a good thing), but has recently developed a little distinct waviness. This is why growing hair is a constant learning process: you can't just discover a way of handling your hair and be happy ever after with it- not as long as it is still growing and changing. This keeps things interesting. :) |

Definately check Ouidad's products and Ojon Deep Treatment. They have kept me from looking like I stuck my finger in a socket many times. ::) ;D The humidity is a killer and causes major frizz, but as your hair gets longer the weight of it helps it lay down alittle bit better,at least it does for me.
Good luck and let us know how you make out. I also heard good things about Jessie's Curls. I think it's www.jessiescurls.com if I'm mistaken I think it's in the Curls Room section on this site. |

Wow, Galadriel....great advice!
You are so right about the frustrations that go along with hair changing with different lengths. There's also the fact that products don't stay the same. Companies are always introducing new products and "revamping" their old ones, so the same hair stuff that you swear by right now might not be the same hair stuff you use 3 years from now. As for taming your mane, FaeDreams, you might consider using oil or aloe gel. The ends of my hair have a tendency to dry out, so I try to keep them moisturized by spraying a mix of baby oil & water on them. It's worked pretty well so far - I haven't had a single split end in years. :) Of course, I have a totally different hair type & texture than you, so I'm not going to swear by anything. :-/ |

Thanks for your answers everyone! I don't think my hair is too dry b/c I condition everyday and deep condition about once a week or so. I think it may be the new length and getting used to it. It is just below my shoulders now and very poofy. And from what I can remember when my hair was long before once it gets to BSL it should lie a little more flat. Thanks for your replies!

One other thing I have read somewhere -- less combing is better with curly hair. The more you try to comb the frizzier it gets. (this is 2nd or 3rd hand info as I definitely do not have curly hair!)

Thnaks but i defintely don't comb my hair when it is dry. only when wet and it has conditioner in it... I finally figured that out when I was about 19. lol.

My hair is wavy and the canopy tends to be dry and poofy. My hair is easier to take care of now that it's longer, and now that I've figured out that it's wavy. ::) The canopy needs moisture or it's a mess.
I use a spritz at night--1 oz aloe, 5 oz distilled water, 3-10 drops of jojoba oil mixed with lavender eo and rosemary eo, and a squirt of Goth Rosary conditioner. I spritz my canopy well with the mixture, then braid it for the night. It makes my hair much less poofy and very soft. |

I agree Galadriel's theory that each stage needs time to adjust to. How long is your hair FaeDreams? I also agree with Curlgirl (you're there again!) about the Ojon. I have mentioned on a couple of other threads that I use Ojon oil. I haven't tried the deep conditioner yet but will give it a go sometime. I use the Ojon oil all over my hair and leave it in all night then wash it the next day. It does make it soft and shiny. Trouble is, it's not cheap, at least not hear in Britian and particularly as I seem to need so much to get it to cover all my length and thickness. Still, if I can get great looking hair I am not too worried about the cost so long as the product works.

My hair is only just below my shoulders when curly now. I'm not sure about when it is straight b/c I haven't done that since January. ~~jax

Ah ha! I didn't like at all how my hair looked at that length. My solution was to obtain some nice hairtoys and start playing with updos- that kept me entertained and my hair felt more fun when I concentrated in the fact that it is long enough for cool styles. :)
Also, well moisturized hair is less frizzy. I do weekly deep treatments -oil, moisture treatments, protein based, and don't feel that I am exaggerating at all. Curly hair is naturally more dry than straight hair, so you might benefit from regular deep treatments. In between treatments, it is beneficial to spritz your hair every now and then with water/essential oil mix or rose water. If you are using styling products to tame frizzies, try aloe vera gel for the same purpose. Most styling products contain alcohol which is drying. So while they glue the hair in place, they also worsen the problem. AV gel has a little hold and it moisturizes the hair- much better! |
