Title: Maximum time before trim
Post by Jean on Aug 23rd, 2006 at 4:46am
Hi I was just wondering what is the longest time you guys have ever gone without cutting or trimming your hair and will goin long periods of time without triming the hair cause more hair to fall out?

I went 2 years without a trim.  I did remove split ends during this time however.

Your hair falls out based on factors other than cutting.  Each hair follicle will grow a hair for a determined period of time - I think I read it averaged about 6 or 7 years.  Once it has completed this growth phase, the hair will be shed and the follicle will "rest" before starting to grow another hair.

If hair is falling out before the full growth period, it is usually an indication of poor health or diet.  Thyroid problems, will for instance, cause hair to fall out prematurely.  If the scalp is irritated or the follicles become clogged, hair will fall out and may not grow back.

Of course, if the hair breaks, you will have shorter hair, and not achieve the actual length possible.

hi.  If it breaks there will be no tiny little white "bulb" on on one of the ends.  When your hair sheds or falls out naturally there is a tiny white bulb at the end where it came out of your head.  That just means a new hair follicle is pushing the old hair out.

I've gone about 4 years. I didn't notice any more hair falling out than usual...

You can go FOREVER with out trimming. The act of trimming and cutting is just to maintane shape and style.

I've gone about two years without a trim when I was going out my bob. But now that my hair is to my tailbone and I like to have nice blunt line, I go about every two or three months at Supercuts.

Hello i went a year without trimming just cutting off splits and i was fine. It depends if your hair is coloured or not. If it is coloured then you need to cut it often if not just let it grow.

As of now, I've gone 8 months without a trim.  :o  Need one badly.

Going longer without trims won't cause excessive hair fall, but it could lead to breakage. Long hair thrives on healthy ends.

Just to throw a little wrench into this discussion.   ;D

If your trims are not done with a very sharp scissor and perpendicular to the hair itself, you could be causing split ends!

If you had a good trim, keep the hair moisturized, and treat it gently, you can go a long time between trims.

Too true Bikerbraid!  I discovered the scissors I was using to S&D (search and destroy) split ends, were actually adding to my problem...  New scissors helped.  For hair only scissors!

Of course, technically speaking one can go without a trim forever...however, different hairtypes react differently to that. Usually, strong, coarse and resistant hair does well with minimal trims while those of us with very fine hair are best off with more frequent trims (still way more seldom than the infamous 6 week rule).
I have gone without trimming for 6 months, but my ends looked quite bad after that. I think the optimal trimming frequency for my fine, Scandinavian hair is about every 3 months. That way I can get away taking only a tiny amount.
