Title: Vitamins / supplements ? Post by ghinnygirl on Sep 4th, 2006 at 4:51pm
I have straight elbow length hair, I can't seem to get it any longer, is there any supplements that anyone can recommend that might help. I've heard stuff about biotin, gelatin and over the counter prenatals. What's your view on this? I'm not looking for overnight results, there is no such thing. Any suggestions?
Thanx, maria |

I'm not sure if this will help you but, I have alopecia and my doctor just prescribed biotin for me to take in addition to my other medication.
I take 1000 mcg's 3 times a day, as well as the 300 mcg's that's in my regular daily supplement. You most likely won't need as much but, since it was prescribed to me by a doctor, I guess there must be something to it so, it's worth a try. I haven't been taking it long enough (just a few days) to tell if it actually works though. Good Luck :) |

I've found biotin and silica to be helpful to prevent shedding. You might try adding them.
There are a couple of supplements specifically for hair that you could check on. I've not taken them myself, so I can't say if they work or not, but I know they include the biotin and silica. |

I've been taking biotin and silica for about two years now and my hair has really benifited from it! 8)

This is interesting. I was looking at the bottles of multiple vitamins that I have. One only provides 10% of Biotin. The other (a B complex) only provides 8%. This is making me ask, what is Biotin, where does it come from, and how much do we need...
Wait...be right back... :-? I just went and got my book off the shelf, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, by Balch and Balch. This says that biotin aids in cell growth...sufficient quantities are needed for healthy hair and skin. It says 100 mg of biotin daily may prevent hair loss in some men. Food sources are listed as brewer's yeast, cooked egg yolks, meat, milk, poultry, saltwater fish, soybeans, and whole grains. :) |

i dont know how much i can help but i happen to use prenatal vitamins. after i had my son i kept using them. i started noticing that my hair was shiner and healthier looking. im assuming since its a mega dose of vitamins that it gives my hair an extra boost. i used to take a regualr multi-vitamin, but never saw the same results. it was purely by accident that this happened. it glad it happened though. i dont really know about the others you mentioned. im sure whatever you choose your hair will be healthy.
hope this helps and good luck! |
