Title: Craft Corner
Post by Galadriel on Oct 26th, 2006 at 12:12pm
I know many of us are creative, so I thought it'd be fun to have a place to share our projects. If you knit, sew, crochet, paint, do woodwork, make hairsticks...whatever, post a picture of your creation here!  :)

Sooo, I finished knitting my bridal shawl today.  :D

It was about as easy as a knitting project can be- the only challenge was its size and the limited time I had. I am going to wear it in my winter wedding instead of a coat. It's made of fine mohair yarn, and its red color matches "rose colors" we use in the wedding. Very similar looking shawls cost in a bridal store almost 200€ while yarns for making this shawl cost a bit over 40€. I'm very pleased!

A close up of the shawl.

Your shawl is beautiful!  Congratulations on finishing it so quickly.  I hope to get some pictures of some of my knitting this weekend. Then I can post them here!

Wow, that is gorgeous!  Mohair is so fine and delicate, it takes forever to knit.  Whenever I knit, I use multiple balls together and large needles so I can finish.  Congrats on a job well done!

Galadriel,
What a gorgeous red shawl!!! I'd love to see what other people are working on as well.  I like doing crafts myself, my problem however is finishing things.  I have so many things started and very few finished :-[  Anybody else have this problem?

Are you kidding, Silvermayne?  I have so many knitting projects started that it is just plain sad.  That is part of why I switched to using only large needles and multiple yarns, it goes so much faster.  I even have a kingsize quilt I started over 20 years ago.  I finished the top, but the bands puckered and I never figured out how to fix it.  Sad, huh?

Beautiful Shawl!!!  Wish I could get my hands on a digital camera to show my crochet wares. >:(  Oh well,I'll eventually get one to share with you ladies and gents if you're looking! ;D

I hear you, Kathy!!  ;D Twenty years!   Here's my sad story  :-/  I started crocheting a bedspread when I was twenty for my single bed, then when I got married, I decided to go for the queen size.  Last year, 35 years after starting it,  I threw the whole unfinished mess out.  The biggest problem is that it weighed a ton!  I think I still know the pattern by heart.   ;D   Like you, I'm starting to learn that a quicker project is a much better idea if I'm to have any hope of finishing something.  Like a doily - takes about a month for me to finish a complicated one and it's very satisfying.

I used to knit Fair Isle patterned sweaters..... they took about 4 months to finish and I would be soooo sick of them by the time I finished.  I like the socks, mittens, hats, scarves and slippers that I do now.  I can finish them before I start to hate them.   I just finished a pair of socks last night, and now I have to decide what to start.  Hubby keeps demanding more socks, so I guess that is what I should do next - his socks are so boring.  For some reason he doesn't like the lacey patterns I like to do for my own socks.  ;D  Anybody got a good sock pattern for men?

One of the women in the cast of the play is supposed to be bringing me knitting needles and some "fuzzy yarn" so she can teach me how to knit.  I've been oohing and ahhing over a fuzzy scarf she's knitting during rehearsals.  If all goes well, I may have something to post here by the time closing night rolls around!   :D

I love knitting, but I am such a procrasinator.  I am supposed to be making my friend an afghan which I started June of '05. Its only 1/4 of the way done. It will get done eventually, when I have some motivation. I've had tons other projects that I've started but never finished [smiley=rolleyes.gif].

Wow, that shawl is lovely.  Your shawl looks just as good if not better than the expensive shawls that I've seen in stores.  Very impressive!

I love that shawl!!  I used a similar yarn last year, and yes - very hard to work with!  So kudos to you!

I haven't been doing any hand crafting, but I've done some digital crafting.  They are listed in my blog here:

Am I knitting socks??   ;D  I knit felted slippers for everyone for Christmas (20 pair).  I also knit each person either a pair of socks, a pair of mittens, or a scarf.  In addition to that, I have knit myself 6 pair of socks this year, hubby 5 pair, my son 2 pair, and 5 more pair as additional gifts.  Whew!

Wow! I am majorly impressed!  :o  Seriously, do you have any problems with pain in your hands?  I can't knit or crochet for too long without getting a cramp in my hand!

And here I was thinking that I am a quick knitter ::) ...Compared to you, BB I'm a turtle with knitting needles ! :)

Besides the bridal shawl, I have knitted so far three pairs of mittens and a scarf and sewn one more skirt. I've still got so much to do until I feel my little family's needs are met.

khrome, you are very creative!

Thanks Galadriel!  So are you!  :)

Hubby has a picture of most of the slippers before they were felted, I just have to convince him to download it for me.   :-/  Then I'll just have to come up with a picture of a couple of them felted.  Unfortunately I had to get everything wrapped sooner than I had planned and stupidly did not get a picture of all the projects when they were laid out on the floor while I was matching them all up.

As for my hands.... I do have arthritis in my hands, so I have to be careful to not knit too long in a single setting.  But I do knit whenever I have a few minutes - riding in the car; at lunch; waiting for an appointment; watching TV; etc.  I usually get at least an hour of knitting in most evenings - which I use to relax from the stresses of the day.

I think I'm going to use the yarn I recieved as part of my SS gift to make socks instead of some hair accessory. Since it is sock yarn. Was that a hint, BB? LOL  :P

The only thing is, dpn's terrify me  :-[. I dont know why. Maybe I should start out with something simple first, before I make socks. Or should I just suck it up? Any suggestions? TIA.

If double points scare you, try two sets of circulars.  Each circular would take the place of 2 double points.  That's how I make 99% of my socks.  But you really should give the dp's a chance - they are not as hard as you might think.  I was pleasantly surprised when I first tried them a few years ago.  (And socks really are not that hard to make... if you want me to suggest a couple of free, easy sock patterns, just let me know.)

I am nearly finished with the three shrugs I made for my daughters and daughter-in-law for this Christmas.  I only have to finish the last ribbing, bind off, then sew up the sleeves on the last one.  I never made socks before, but have done mittens and hats on double points.  I have to try some socks.  How about a link to those free sock patterns, BB?  I am hoping that shrugs aren't out of style too soon.    That would be just my luck!

Please don't say that you thinkthey'll go out of style.  I crochet ponchos and shrugs for sale.  I've been crocheting alot of hats this past week and my mother has a SS from church and on the card it says the lady wants a scarf, hat and gloves.  Guess who's got the honor of making those!!! ;D

Here are some good instructions for knitting 2 socks on 2 circulars:
http://www.socknitters.com/2circs/index.htm

The same site also has some tips on knitting with double points, etc.

Here's a great beginners' tutorial for making a sock on double points.

As for patterns - I have collected TONS of patterns - free - on the net.  Just a google search will bring you lots of options.

WOW I have never seen double points done before!  That looks kind of fun.

Knitting with double pointed needles is not as hard as some think it is.  Once your hands get used to holding the needles, it is no different from straight needle knitting.  You should give it a try!

Does this count?

It falls under wood working? I made the plane, train, traffic lights, wheel, snowball fight...... ;)

I can do a little sewing. But I don't know a thing about knitting socks or slippers.  :o

Hey Sexywitch I only knit socks using circular needles so if you would like some help Ill be happy  to help you.

I have used double points before but munchkin likes to play with the yarn and double points fall out of knitting very easy. :o hence the circular needles.

Oh and Sir Rat... wood working is an art when its done like that!!!  (Outside my place I threw some lights around a palm tree)
