Title: Need Help and Advise
Post by Lisabelle on Dec 1st, 2006 at 1:07am
Ladies and gents I need your help.  My hubbies going away next week on a work detail up north.  He will be staying in a cottage a.k.a cabin and has to cook for himself.  Thing is he cannot cook poor thing!  He (and I as well) are ovo-lacto vegetarians and I need some idea of what food to send with him.  We are not sure if there will be a microwave there.  I don't want to send him off with just milk and two boxes of cereal.... :-[  Any idea's?? Oh and his boss said he's just taking his gun and will hunt for his dinner. :-X :-/

Here's my list of camping food for when we are not sure if we will be able to cook or not:
cheese
crackers
bread
peanut butter
jelly
milk
cereal
raw veggies
veggie dip (if there is refrigeration)
granola bars
nuts (peanuts, sunflower seeds, pistashios, etc)
dried fruits (apples, raisins, etc)

We usually have hard sausage and jerky as well, but those would not fit into your list.

I suggest purchasing some Lipton noodle dinners. (Alfredo is my favorite) He can boil water and pour in the noodles and sauce mix.  It says to add milk and butter, but when I hike I just use water and the packaged mix.  Lots of vegetarians survived 6 months on the trail with these.

Robin, Kathy: Thank you for the great ideas! :).  I think I can put something together for him now.  He also wants his own bread (I make homemade bread) so I'll pack that too!

Do you guys eat oatmeal, cream of rice, or quinoa?  Something you can just add hot water too and POOF?  I like cream of rice with a tablespoon of maple syrup and cashews as a snack or breakfast.  mmmmm

In asian food markets or the asian section in the grocery store, there are also other meals you can just add water to.  Like cup o' noodles, but tastes way better.

Granola, trail mix, nuts, dried fruit?

How about canned veggies and fresh fruit?  If he can't take fresh veggies?

If it's any consolation, veggies retain most of their nutrients when raw.  Maybe it's a good thing he can't cook.  :)
