Title: Let's Help Create Stiffer Laws For Child Offenders Post by La Diosa on Feb 23rd, 2007 at 12:00pm
I was watching Oprah and the topic was child molestation and how the laws across the country can be very lax. For example, there was a case where a man was sentenced to probation and a $22.00 fine.
Send a letter to your senators and governor, and tell them you want the laws for convicted child molesters changed now! The letter is written, all you have to do is print and send. Don't have access to a printer? E-mail them instead! Here is the link. http://www2.oprah.com/tows/pastshows/200702/tows_past_20070221_b.jhtml |

Hi La Diosa! I am fairly new here so you may not reconize my name, but I could not agree with you more. Things do need to change. I watch Oprah too, and she has done wonderful things with regards to this topic. I know because of her a handful of molestors have already been caught( not sure of the exact numbers). But she is only one person and we all need to speak up. I have a two year old son, and when I think of some of these people out there it makes me sick to my stomach. Ecspecially because many of them seem so normal. I just read a wonderful book called Perfect Match by Jodi Piccoult. It is about child molestation and how far one mother goes to protect her child. The book is fiction, but the legal stuff is not, and it really blew me away. Having children is a wonderful thing (and even people who do not their own children I am sure you know a child that has touched your heart), but in this day and age it is so scary too. It is up to everyone to protect our children-they are our future. You better believe I will be sending that letter. Thank You for posting info about such an important topic!

You are so right. I've sent my letters, and I hope that everyone sends a letter to their senator and governor. I also hope that this message is spread to others so that they can do the same. It's such a shame that in this day and age more isn't done to protect children, not just here but everywhere. |

I'm probably the wrong one to reply, mainly because I'm one to see the death penalty expanded to include all rape, 1st degree assault, kidnapping, and (several other things), so I might be a bit too radical.
But we recently had a case where a 13 year old was abducted about 20 miles west of me. Quick thinking by a witness describing the truck resulted in finding not only the 13 yr. old, but also a 15 yr. old missing for 4 years. This guy will never be a productive member of society. Be GONE with him. (I keep saying , thou should not judge... over and over. ) The death peanalty as it is is too easy. Public hanging is better, or how about shark bait? And then turn over the molesters assets to the victim. Better yet, do it before the execution. I am a radical Rat. My letter would be considered too radical and discarded. I don't watch Oprah, or hardly any TV.. |

Amen, Sir Rat. It seems as though some of your convictions are quite in line with my own. And don't worry about being a radical. Your average Joe might create subtle change and make a headline for 2 days. But it takes someone who thinks - and acts - radically to make history.
I agree that penalties for sex offenders of any sort need to be stronger, but it's going to take a lot more than a generic, copied and mass-produced letter from Oprah's posse. Just my two cents. :P |

Who knows, but I believe that at least trying something sure beats the heck out of simply criticizing and doing nothing at all. |

You "hit the nail right on the head",LaDiosa! We have to try something instead of doing nothing and/or talking about it.

Never had to comment on this before but totally agree.
Not sure about the medical sides of this, but I read somewhere that if they can put tiny hidden "trackers" or whatever it's called on cars to prevent car theft and possibly dogs, cats etc. just under the skin for the same reason, why not something similar in principle for children ? So that any child missing for longer than normal could be traced in the same way ? Possibly no need to insert anything under the skin at all as the mere risk of it being there should deter the majority in the first place ? Similar to speed cameras which you never know if they have film in them or not ! For what it's worth ? :) |

Maybe tracking children is something that may be a possibility in the future for parents who feel this is necessary.
This letter is basically an attempt to get the Adam Walsh Child Protection Act (which was signed last year) implemented because it isn't always enforced. The letter is also a tool to help those who feel that something needs to be done but they don't necessarily know what to do or how to articulate their thoughts effectively in a letter. However, anyone can write their own letter using their own words. :) |

I'm all for original wording. ;)
Some of the main problems with the GPS microchipping idea are 1.) privacy. It may be helpful for young children, but there aren't very any adults that I know of who would appreciate their location being known to anyone at any given time. It becomes a Big Brother issue at that point. And 2.) cost. You have to look at the number of people who would actually be willing to pay for this themselves and how long before the government was expected to pay for it. Plus, there will always be the underground clinics who would be willing to remove the chips from anyone, regardless of their history, which amounts to even more of our tax dollars being wasted. There may indeed be stronger penalties for child offenders in the future. We can hope, at least. But for now, it's still an issue that could be prevented in the first place with more responsible parenting. Again, just my perspective. There's no need to flame it if you don't agree. |

Also, from a Biblical point of view. Marking anyone with an RFID chip is refered to as the Mark of the Beast. With an RFID chip placed in your body, the government can track you up to 150 ft. Big Brother does not need to know everything. Eventually, that will take place, as without this mark in your right hand or on your forehead you will not be able to buy or sell. See Holy Bible, New Testament, Book of Revelation, beginning with chaper 4. But for now, while thinking this maybe a way of keeping track of your child, it also will make the acceptance of the mark easier as people will become desensitized to it.
Thats what I know. Debr |

Yes i am againt that chip, but if it is in the bible then there is nothing i can do to stop it, it has to come to pass. |
