Title: Guess how bun
Post by bikerbraid on Feb 26th, 2007 at 7:34pm
This is the bun I am wearing most often these days.  Can you guess how it is made?  If you can correctly describe how it is made, I will send you a little prize box with hand made hair items (sorry, none of Susan's hairsticks will be included.)  PM me your description.

Just a couple of notes to help:
1.  Only the hairstick you see in the picture is securely holding the bun in place.
2.  My hair is classic length.

I know I'm not eligble for the contest, but I just gotta say what a beautiful bun that is and I love that you're using it in your avatar!!

Thanks, Sakina.  Hey - I'll let ya guess - I don't think you have any extra advantage of knowing how the bun is made - go ahead, give it your best shot!  ;)

We have one guess so far!  Arcadian had written a valiant effort to describe my bun, but it is not correct.  (Hopefully he will try again!)

Come on people - put your creative thinking caps on and take a guess.

Here's another clue.  The hair IS NOT braided.

Edited: Arcadian is one of our beloved male participants - my apologies  :-[

Lisabelle has given this a try, but we still don't have a winner.  She can still try again, however.

Another hint:  My hair is too long to just rope it around and have 1 stick hold it in place.

Arcadian has made another great attempt at guessing on how the bun was made.  I have the feeling he is going to figure it out real soon.  Ladies, better get your guesses in quick!

Lisabelle has changed her tactic and is heading down a good path to the solution.  I have to play with Arcadian's last description - it just might be a solution.  Get your ideas in soon!

Well, this bun is clearly your own innovation. It's lovely! I sent my guess...

Galadriel's guess is verrrrrryy close!

Several have suggested I have knotted my hair.  This is close, but not quite right.
BIG CLUE:  I have a hobby passion.  I have used a technique that is related to that passion.

Maybe you knitted it before you did your bun??

hee hee!  this is fun!  ;D

No - knitting is not involved, but there is a similar hobby that I also do.  I used no tools to make the bun, but used a technique that commonly uses a tool.

We are getting very, very close.

We have a winner!!

Galadriel has come up with the best description of my bun.  Here is what she wrote:

Quote:
both crochet and knit, so my second guess would be that you did the first knot the same way you do when you start to create stitches (? are they called that?) in the beginning of a new knit.  After creating the loop, instead of creating another stitch, you just pulled the tail from the loop (like you do when you finish your last stitch), wrapped the little that remained around the bun and there it is!

I start out by twisting the hair into a rope.  I then chain the hair, using the same technique that is used when crocheting a chain.  I make a loop with the hair, then pull the hair thru the loop, but not all of the hair - this creates another loop which I then reach thru and grab the end of the hair and pull all of it thru (if my hair were longer, I would keep doing this).  I then twist the ends around the base of the bun, insert the hairstick and VOILA!

Special kudos go out to Arcadian who had many guesses and one that was pretty darn close!

I hope that this little contest gets some of you thinking about creative ways to work with your hair.  :)

That was fun! It was quite challenging to come up with an understandable description of what I thought you did, because I don't know knitting terminology in English. From your description it seems, that I could have managed just well by translating the terms directly...
It's a beautiful bun, I hope it won't take long before I can manage it too.  :)
