Title: My little dog was attacked.
Post by rodent on Mar 1st, 2007 at 10:10pm
Again. :-[

My poor little Fox Terrier hates walks. But she is overweight and needs excersise. She also already has one bad leg. Normally at walk time, my retriever is ready and waiting and the terrier will be hiding.

It finally got above 50 and my body temp is finally below 100. I'm going out for a walk. My retriever is excited. My terrier even seems willing.

So, about a half mile into the walk, this same blonde dog jumps the fence, and before I could pick up the terrier, it has it's bad leg in the blond dog's mouth. this is the third time. I finally break this up and the retriever's tail ends up in this dog's mouth.

It took the owner, a middle or high school age boy and me to finally corall this dog. The owner is a friend of my son's family who assured me they took care of their dog from the other times.

:-/

Poor dog! :(  You could call the ASPCA and see if they can get the dog's owners to keep it tied up when it's outside.  Apparently, the fence isn't doing anything to restrain the dog if it can just hop over it.

Poor dog!  :'( Having been a large dog owner, I know how important it is to keep your dogs under control.  Sounds like the police need to be informed of this dog.  It needs to be chained or a higher fence used.  We had an 8 foot fence to keep our dogs confined, since jumping fences was a sport to them!

If the owner cant or wont do anything, perhaps the police and a day in court would.  All animal owners are required to control their animals.  I am sorry your little dog was attacked  :'(.  Is he ok now?

:'( :'( >:(  it makes me have so many emotions about this subject.  I'm sorry for your pup's unprovoked attack.  That's what I call it.  It's obvious that the owner is not responsible and needs to be held accountable.  Having had Old Englich Sheepdogs and an Irish Wolfhound when I was a kid,I still feel the same way about making sure your animal is well behaved and the owner being responsible;regardless of the size.  I now am owned by a bichon frise ::)  I hope you are ok,too Sir Rat.

Indeed. The owners are responsible for their pets' behaviour. These owners are obviously not doing their jobs. Friends of the family or not, you may want to have a word with them about allowing their dogs to get out. Do not accept excuses.

If they refuse to listen, then you may take legal action if you so desire. Or perhaps you could walk in a different direction or across the street from the irresponsible dog owners' house. Or maybe walk your dogs at a different time of day, when the blonde dog is not outside.

The little terrier is doing much better as of today. Yesterday, she wouldn't walk on the leg and was very lethargic. We ended up taking her to a vet hospital to find she had a swollen and dislocated 'knee' and a fever. Pills were prescibed by this vet, (who I may use again).

When I came home today, my little one was jumping high to greet me. What a relief.

The owners have agreed to pay the vet bill. They have agreed any time the dog is out to be chained. But again, they promised to chain that dog the other times. We'll see.

It's hard to avoid this house on any of the walk routes over 1/3 mile. Even then, once that dog is out, it ventures pretty far. When it is inside, I swear it's coming through the glass at any moment. There is no set time the dog is in, either. They have four kids from college age to grade school. There is always someone home to let out that dog.

That's got to be a feeling of dread everytime you have to walk the dogs. :(

Call your local polisstation (that´s what they´re for) and say that you are an anonymous neighbour and would they please send someone over to their house. Next time it could be a little kid attacked...
