Hi, I'm new here. I've read through a lot of your boards and your advice is great.

I have a question about head wraps. My hair has been in a funk lately (some conditioner mistakes and such). And today I just couldn't deal with it, so I finally did my hair up in a ginormous scarf (after looking up techniques for such things on the Internet) and was surprised to find that it's quite possibly the most comfortable hair-do I've ever had. It doesn't fall down; it keeps my hair contained; it doesn't get in my face; it's comfortable - it's lovely. The thing is, it won't stay put with a slick scarf, so I had to use a cotton-ish one. I know that cotton isn't good for hair (at least for pillowcases and things), because it catches against it and breaks it. But, the wrap is snug and it doesn't move and neither does my hair underneath it - and I'm not taking it on and off - I just put it up in the morning and left it all day - so I don't think it's hurting it, but I'm not certain. Anyone know? Or have a good guess? I love it, but I'll make do without if I'm doing damage. Thanks.

First off, Welcome to Longlocks!!  I hope you'll formally introduce yourself in the new member thread. (hint, hint)

I think you're probably fine as long as its not too tight.  I wonder if you couldn't put a 'slippery-er' scarf on first?  If you're really worried about it.  Also, you could do a nice leave in conditioner or a bit of oil on the hair to lubricate it which should be more gentle on your hair.

I have a similar problem with wearing scarves - they slip off!  A cotton scarf would be OK as long as there isn't a lot of movement  that would cause rubbing against the hair and scalp.  You might also try securing your scarf with a snap clip or bobby pin.  If you use pins/clips to secure the scarf, be sure to change the placement from day to day so that you don't cause breakage.  (and of, course, be careful when removing them!).

I don't wear it oppressively tight, but I do wear it tight enough to keep it from moving at all. Also, I put oil in my hair before putting it up (but I do that whether I'm wearing a scarf or not). I'm a  little afraid that if I used a slicker scarf underneath that both scarves'll just slide off the back of my head (could be paranoia, though).

Also, I don't plan on wearing it everyday - just on excessively bad hair days :), when I really really need it.

Oh, and, Sakina, I'll check out the introduction section. Is that where people show pictures of their hair? Because I'm not sure if I have any good ones...hmmmm...and I certainly don't want pictures up of my hair the way it looks now (lol).

Hi and welcome abgrubb!  I went on the site that you gave above and it is a great site.  I myself have not worn a head scarf or any of the items that are there,but given my length,it wouldn't be a bad idea!  Thanks for the great site!!! :)

Great picture!  I love that style.  I apparently have a head that is shaped in such a way that a scarf will never stay on like that - I'm envious!  

As for the cotton, I don't think there is a problem with wearing a scarf like that.  There are many women around here that wear cotton blend scarves like that every day and their hair is beautiful (when you are lucky enough to see it!).  The scarf protects your hair from the sun and other elements (and covers the greasies!!!  ;D )

Welcome abgrubb!  I liked the sight you posted. I wear head scarfs from time to time.  I like snoods mostly for those yucky hair days and hijabs for working one houses when we paint or are sanding floors.  I like the tichel it looks great! :)

Glad you guys like the site. I found it when I was looking for wrapping techniques - I've never been great at just "figuring stuff out" - and saw something about tiechels ("Tiechels? hmmmm"). The instructions may be better other places (like here: http://www.tznius.com/cgi-bin/tying.pl, if you need help like I did, curlgirl) but I really liked the look of coveryourhair's products.

Things I've learned about my scarf since last posting:

• It's great for working outside (and for cleaning the bathtub)
  
• It's also great for driving with the windows down (I can't tell you how long it's been since I could do that)

Both of my Slovak grandmothers with very long hair wore babushkas, triangular scarves. I guess they've never gone out of style!

Thanks, BB.  I wore it all day and didn't have it slip down or need to be retied and it was a windy day!!  These are really light weight and fun to wear.  :D

Wow, that's an excellent wrap job. And aren't they amazing? I love mine (so much I had no trouble ignoring taunts when visiting my younger brother that I looked like a cancer patient - you try having almost waist-length hair on a windy day, buzz-cut boy  ;D).

Thanks, abgrubb  & Curlgirl64.  I know what you mean, abgrubb, my hubby thought I looked weird.  He just couldn't get used to it.

Its worth it to buy them from coveryourhair, it cost me $7.50 each (I also got a solid burgandy one-reaally pretty color!) and the weave is unique.  It weighs almost nothing, and the openess of the weave really holds the scarf on your head.  Mine only moved when I looked up-the bun was pretty big.  I loved being able to go out on a quite windy day, without having my hair "up" knowing it was protected.

Those headscarves are gorgeous! Unfortunately, with the racist/idiotic attitudes of the people around here, I can't go out all that often with one on. Depending on the style I wear, people either think I'm a muslim(not looked highly upon, unfortunately) or a biker(and many seem to think that entitles them to assume i'm a prostitute or a druggie.) bloody racist, idiotic rednecks.    
As soon as we get the appartment in the city we're hunting for, I'm so getting some of those scarves. I love the ones they had at the Tznius link, Abgrubb... Thanks for that!

Yeah, I wondered if people would think I'm muslim or if Jewish people would think I'm Jewish, too.  Oh well, out here in Arizona people keep pretty much to themselves.  Wild west attitude.

I love that wrap, by the way, Sakina. I opened the picture in my graphics program so i could see all of it at once , and shrunken any, it looks like you're wearing a hat made of molten silver, or possibly old star trek shiny-silver-futuristic fabric.

You're lucky... Louisiana-ians, from what i've seen so far, don't understand the meaning of,"keep to themselves". that's normally great... i've never known my neighbors anywhere else i've lived, but... sheesh. I didn't want to know them THAT well.  

LOL, Kiraela.  For about 15 years I lived in a tiny (as in one stop light) town in Michigan.  Ugh!  Everyone knows everyone's business, which doesn't sit well with me at all.  Needless to say, I was there 15 years too long!  The good thing that came out of living there is meeting my hubby.
