I was wearing a pencil as a hairstick earlier, and my BF suddenly said, "come on, lock up the shop. We're going to the hardware store." I'm always willing to get out of the house, so I was all for it.  Long story short, he purchased a 36'' long, 1/4 inch dowel for me to make 2 pairs of hairsticks (each stick is 9'' long).
So far I've got 2 carved to soft points and sanded down smooth... I just need to decide how to decorate them. Anyone got any ideas? I'm still planning on getting some LL hairstix, but for now, this is all I can budget. (4 hairsticks for 0.55$)


Simple method to make, just carve a point in one end of the dowel and sand smooth. (if you're clumsy like me, be very careful that you don't take off a hunk of finger instead of wood!)

You could stain them, paint them, glue things to them or just put a varnish on and wear 'em natural wood color.

I wonder If I can find some dark green paint that would look pretty... maybe even wrap the top in beads or something. *ponders*

Nail polish makes a good hairstick paint!

oooh... hey, I never thought of that. Maybe a pair of dark red hairsticks would be pretty. I don't know if I have enough left though... Next time I go shopping I'm spending some on a bottle of polish. Unless I decide to just paint them black and 'borrow' a smidgeon of the paint my guy uses for his ironwork. :D maybe black with red tops though... then I know I'd have enough. (and it would match almost every item of clothing i own.)
