I read this story online today about how a small terrier, less than a foot in height, saved 5 kids from two pit bulls. Unfortunatly, the little terrier lost his life in saving them. George, the little terrier, was 9 years old.

George saved them by staving off the attacking dogs long enough for the kids to escape and find help. The terrier was resued, but had to be put down for his injuries.

As a dog lover, and also the owner of a small terrier, this story gripped me. If there is heaven for dogs, this terrier will have doggie treats forever and sleep in a silk bed.

Awwwww!  Poor little guy!  I'm sure he crossed the Rainbow Bridge with every dog in awe of his courage.

I hope the owner(s) of the pit bulls are charged for not having their dogs under control.

Oh, that's so sad.  :'(  What a brave little dog. I think George will be greatly rewarded in doggie heaven.

I do know there is a Rainbow's Bridge.  I have had  ferrets,rabbits and birds go there.  That George deserves to have an ultra luxurious ride up there!!  He earned it ten fold!!

People could stand to learn from the selfless love and devotion that animals often have for their owners. RIP, George.

I, too, hope that charges are pressed against the owners of the pitbulls. Negligence should be costly and stupidity should be painful.

One question, though. Sir Rat, in the article, were there any eye witness reports of parents/neighbors, etc. witnessing the attack? Kids often are too stressed by things to remember details.  My problem lies in the fact that it's assumed the Pits were after the children, and not the terrier in the first place. Pitbulls have been bred for centuries to be animal agressive. They have also, however, been bred for the same amount of time to be NON-people agressive. Properly raised Pits these days are just as sweet (or sweeter) that the average chihuahua.
Not that these Pits were neccessarily properly bred/raised, but it can't be assumed that the Pits were after the kids, without actual eye witness reports of them heading towards the children specifically, not the dog.

*note, I'm not saying the pits' owner doesn't deserve to be charged to the fullest extent of the law. he/she does. Negligence, expecially with large/dangerous/agressive breeds is worse than quite a few other crimes I could mention.  I'm also not saying we shouldn't remember the George as a hero. He was, wither the pits were after him, or not. I know he'll have a special place on the other side of the bridge.  I just.. would like to know the facts...

Yes as it was a neighbor who rescued George, albiet too late, thus witnessed it. The owner of the pit bulls apperantly had troubles with these dogs and unprovoked atacks in the past and they were put down as well.

Pets will take after their owners. George was prabaly treated very well in his nine years, thus gave himself to protect. The pit bull owner (if I remember right) was a breeder and probably could care less. In fact, the breeder voluntarilay gave up the two dogs to authorities. In New Zealand, where this occured, an unprovoked attack means only the attacking dog is required to be neutered, thus useless to the breeder, thus he gave them up.

Certainly a pit bull in the right hands will also give his life to save his master as George did.

Ahh. Okay then. Dogs were after the kids then? They (the dogs) deserved to be put down. (the owner does too, but that's my opinion. neglecting your responsibilities like that is worse than several other crimes I can think of.)

Actually, If he was a breeder worth being alive, much less owning a dog, he didn't give the dogs up because he didn't care, but because he did! about the breed, that is. If a pitbull has a history of agression, they are in no way, shape, or form suitable for breeding, as that is a trait that may very well be passed on to future generations. He may very well have had the dogs put down to A) keep them from attacking anyone else, and B) keep them from producing future progeny.

That doesn't, however,  negate the fact that his dogs were loose, and as pits are known animal agressive, that is worth having all his other animals taken away and never allowed to have one again.

YES! just because some pits by bad breeders/homes are agressive... that doesn't mean all are. A few years ago I was being menaced by a neighbor's dog.. This thing was a viscious, horrible animal that should never have existed. My 9 month old pitbull puppy christy was badly wounded keeping the other pit from getting me long enough for a neighbor to shoot it.  Of course, after hundreds in vet bills, she escaped from the house and was killed by a car less than a month later.

That hurt.



Anyway, Confusion cleared, and I must say.

Poor George! :'(  it's such a shame!  It' makes me so sad when animals get hurt or suffer.

kiraela, that's awful about your dog!!  i feel so bad for pit bulls.  they have had such a rotten go of it and none if its their fault.
my brother had a pitbull, which was the sweetest thing and was intimidated by the cats even.  he wasn't clipped anywhere, which was hilarious because he had these gigantic dumbo ears and long whippy tail, he looked like a gigantic chihuahua.  His dumbass roommate decided he wanted a pitbull too, and got it from another friend of theirs who raised them to fight.   so of course, duh, within 2 weeks, the fighting pitbull had 'turned' the sweet pitbull, they dug under the fence and attacked the neighbors german shepard and killed it.  they were 6 and 9 months old.  i also had to go over and take the cats because they found the dogs playing tug of war with one of them.
so that was end for those dogs.
to top off the story, the dumb roommate got ANOTHER pitbull, then got a job transfer and had to give up his dog.  he tells me a week later he gave her to the michigan humane society.   where they put down all pit bulls automatically.   pretty much he was responsible for the deaths of 4 dogs.  i could've killed him.
