Title: Cones
Post by zachsmom on Jun 29th, 2007 at 4:28pm
Hello everyone..........I have a question about cones...........I read on another part of the boards that some cones are water soluble and that it is better for your hair if they are, and I was just wondering how do you know if they are water soluble?  My curiostity about cones is sparked by the fact that I think my hair loves them.   I was using shampoo bars for a while and I really liked them....ecspecially since the ingredients were all natural.  I have been going through a period of experimentation, which can be very frustrating I must say.  I think I find a hair care routine that I like, but nothing ever seems to produce the same results as the first time I tried it.  This leaves everything very unpredictable and that drives me crazy.   It is one thing when I'm home doing nothing, but when you are planning to go out and you think your hair is going to come out soft and non-frizzy and tangle free, and then the exact opposite occurs it is enough to make you want to scream.........so the point of this rant is that I decided to try liquid shampoo again, and I tried samples of Giovanni smooth as silk shampoo and conditioner and my hair loves them!  It feels so soft and is tangle free and my frizzes are more under control and my ends are so soft ( I  know to look out for the crunchies).  Also it is nice to wash my hair and know what the results will be........anyway I am sorry to go off topic ( that always seems to happen to me)........I guess sometimes you just need to vent.....Thanks for listening!!!:)

Hey, zachsmom.  If you use any cones, be sure to clarify once a week.  I think there's a thread on here somewhere that lists ingredients, although right off hand I can't remember where it is.

Do you have any wave or curl to your hair?  Humidity might be what's setting your hair off into the frizzies.  Ouidad makes an awesome "Climate Control Gel" that really helps with keeping frizzies at bay when the humidity is a problem.  I used it in Indonesia and Singapore with fantastic results!!  Check out www.ouidad.com if you're interested.

Good luck, and keep on trying-its all a work in progress.

LOVE your avatar, btw.

Thanks Sakina!  I will look for that thread, and check out that product you recommended ( I do have a slight wave to my hair).   I love trying new things ( even though my rant would suggest otherwise).  I finally figured out how to get my avatar up there...thanks for your comment......I just love those rose sticks ( really all the sticks Susan makes....I am definitely an addict)!!!:)

Hey zachsmom,

It really depends on your hair type whether cones are a good thing or not. If you hair doesn't react well to cones, then the water soluble variety might work better. Other people just avoid them altogether. I'm pretty sure that Dimethiconol is a water soluble silicone.
Anyway, if your hair does like cones, then there's no reason to avoid them. It's all about what works best for your hair. And your hair is different from everyone else's...so just do what works for you. There is definitely a lot of trial and error involved. Anyone who read my hair journal last year knows that I did a lot of experimenting for the ideal solution. I had many little "hair epiphanies," most of which proved fruitless. But that's the point of it all, I guess.

It's also ok to change your hair products every now and then. If you don't try new things, you never know what you might be missing out on. And even if something doesn't work out, you know to avoid it in the future.
But things change. Product lines change, your hair changes, your life changes, etc. The things that worked for you before might not work forever. Just try to use common sense.

I also know what you mean about public hair disasters.  :P  Last year, I had to attend my grandmother's funeral with godawful slick, greasy hair that looked like it hadn't been washed in a week...even though I'd washed it that morning. The S&C that I'd been using changed their formulas on me after I'd been using them for years and the new versions of them made my hair look absolutely dreadful. I've pretty much avoided them ever since and moved onto bigger and better things. So I feel your pain, but I bet that's a pretty common problem.

Just for the record, I am an avid Pantene user, so cones are a daily thing for me. I do clarify once a week, though that may be slightly more than necessary, to be honest. In the past, I have used cones daily for years at a time without clarifying once and did not have a problem. Like I said, it's all about what your hair can tolerate. Sorry for the rant, but I just thought I'd say that I know where you're coming from.  ;)

Best of luck, my sister.

Dimethicone Copolyol is an example of a water soluable -cone.  My chemist friend tells me that any silicone product that is combined with an alcohol will be water soluable.
