Title: If you could choose from the very beginning again?
Post by Arcadian on Jul 5th, 2007 at 7:49am
If you could choose how you'd live your life again starting from the day before you were born, would you want to be the same, slightly different or completely different ?

As a single guy with no brothers or sisters I've always wished my parents had loved the country and Nature as much as I do, and had lived in the same house they had built just after marrying deep, deep, deep in the country miles and miles from anywhere !! And I would hope that all my children (at least 6 boys, 6 girls and endless grandchildren !) eventually felt the same way about all this too. Oh and that long or very long hair on men and women was expected and routine in Society as well !! :-) Very important that !  ;) Otherwise I'd be more or less happy as I am....I think  :D

That's good enough for starters, though bound to have more thoughts and things I can't think of now after everyone's had their say ! I am utterly fascinated to see how much long hair gets a mention too !!  :D

I like your thoughts on that!  It gave me a warm comforting feeling!  Something nowadays I think we can all use, given the way the world is.  :(!  Yes, I think long hair should be a major part of one's life!

I'm not sure how to respond...... there are so many things I would have liked to have tried, and a few I wish I hadn't!  ::)  I'll have to give this some more thought.

Yes, there are some things I wish I would have done.  Some things I would like to do over.  I dont know if staying single as I have would be in be in my plan.  I know I would have liked to tried the military and going to college.  Yep, just a few do overs  ;).

Yes, if I could go back and, knowing what I know now, re-live my life, there's plenty of things I would do different. I would have made myself more open.... less shy. That has always been my worst problem. Too shy, and too un-self-confident to stand up for what I want. To even ask for what I want. Less impetuous. Certainly less hair cuts. *grin*

If you change one thing, you change it all. I don't think I'd want to take that risk.
Not saying that there aren't certain things that I would do differently (everyone has regrets), but you have to take the bad with the good. That's life.

Reminds me of a lesson that my mother taught me when I was a kid: If you're not happy with your situation, then change it, because you are the only one who can.

As for my hair, well...I didn't have much of a say about it when I was young. There are certainly a lot of regrettable things that I put it through as I got older. Crimpers, curling irons, the home perm, cheap hair products and many colouring treatments...  :o  Things we've all been guilty of at some point. But I guess that's part of the learning process, right?
BTW, how is it that any of our hair even survived the '80's? It's amazing that any of us have hair left after all of that.  ;D  Even worse for those who have been around longer.

heh, I barely had hair in the 80's... I was only there for two years, after all, and I was born mostly bald and blonde.

I only have one major regret in life which is not going to college.  :-[

This wasn't much of an issue until about 15 years ago. It now keeps me pinned in my current job with no way to move. Proir to that, I could always be moved up the food chain by demonstrating work ethic and and the ability to learn by doing to engineering managers. In the last 15 years, this has changed. It matters not how much you know, but do you have the BSEE degree. In fact, to move up I now need a Masters in Electrical Engineering.

Besides that, many frienships are born in college that later help you professionally. I don't have this advantage today.

After that, I wouldn't mind not having to be hit by nine cars in my life.... ::) Pretty much everything else, I would do again the same way.

I don't have any big regrets, and in general, I like my life as it is. There has been some bad stuff, but I think I have learned from the experiences- if certain bad events hadn't taken place, I also wouldn't have learned some important lessons.

If there's one thing I'd change about it, it's my childhood. It wasn't a very happy one,, and though I am in contact with both of my parents regularly, I don't think I can ever have a good relationship with them.

Of course, in general, I wish that world was a better place in great many ways. But, that goes way beyond my little life.

Hair related...well, I think that in the past, I trusted stylists way too much. OTOH, due to stylists talking me to having short hair for 10 years has resulted that I am now fairly confident that short hair is out of my system. Who knows what urges I might have now, had I always had long hair?

Yes, St. Louis and Jefferson counties in Missouri aren't very bike friendly. No fear, though, I haven't been hit in several years.

Now that's just cars  :o   It doesn't count baseballs, beer bottles, cans, trash, ect. thrown at me in my 50,000 mi biking career.

Or being kicked off the road by a motorcycle rider. Biking here isn't the same as what Robin has up north.  ::) On most roads, the cyclist has to ride in the driving lane and compete with cars. Cars always win if they choose not to move over and pass. Secondary roads are wine-dy, sight limited, narrow laned, and crowded, so these all add up to trouble for the poor biker. State highways give us 18 inches.  ::)  :P  :-[  (sometimes) and then put those stupid storm grates by the curb that can swallow an 18mm tire and send us flying....

yeah, I lived in Missouri for about 3 months... I remember the roads. Honestly, I can't wait for my parents to move(again) so there's no threat of having to go back. Maybe it's just Columbia(apparently not though) It seems like all drivers are inconsiderate of EVERYTHING, not just bikes. Girls walking dogs, for instance. Even in our closed little subdivision, me and Maxx almost got run down several times. And we were ON SIDWALKS.  Not to mention getting yelled at by people for being on their lawn, because I had to shove the dog and dive out of the way of the car.

Hmm, good question.  If there was even the slightest risk of changing/losing my current family (daughter, husband, etc.), then I'd have to say no, I wouldn't change one thing.  I'm of a mind like Angel, in that if you change one thing you change EVERYthing.  Do I regret some of my choices?  Oh you'd better believe it!   ;D  On the other hand, all of those choices have formed me into the woman I am today...and I'm pretty happy with who she is.   8-)

Yep, I do recognize how nice it is to have only 10% of the drivers trying to kill you instead of 90% like you seem to have!  ;D

All I've gotta say is amen, Trish!  ;)

I thnk by the way I met my wife, I could change my one major regret (missing college) and still be married to the same woman.

Yep, but I'm still ALIVE!!!! Bwahaha! Rodents are hard to kill. Try as they may.... Once I was knocked uncontious and woke up in an ambulance. I still to this day don't know who called. This was long before cellular phones, too.

Welcome to Misouri... Your low budget state. St. Louis now has the highest crime rate in the nation.
