Title: Music
Post by Jerry on Aug 24th, 2007 at 6:46pm
The discussion of heavy metal music in my introduction inspired me to start this thread about music.  I thought about starting just a heavy metal thread (which I could still do) but I know not all people are into heavy metal like I am.

So, feel free to talk about any types of music you might like or maybe there is a kind of music you might have wondered about but never listened to yet.

Jerry

As I mentioned in Jerry's getting to know you thread, I'm into softer forms of metal (anything too scream-y or growly isn't likely to get me going though... I like to understand what my singers are saying.) industrial music, like Luxt, Nocturne, More Machine than Man, etc. and pretty much anything celtic, expecially harp (as anybody who's been reading my journal for more than, oh.. a day could tell you  :P)
I particularly like music which has female vocals... It's more fun to listen, when I can sing along.

I'm not really sure what genre these groups fit into, but I like some songs from Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Lordi, and The Darkness. I also like listening to musicals, Celtic, oldies, Japanese rock, and moody eastern Europeanish music--has anyone heard "East Meets West" from Nigel Kennedy and Kroke? Kind of like that. I like other forms of music as well, but the ones I listed are the main ones.

I think my two favorite groups are Red Hot Chili Peppers and Gaelic Storm. I'd listen to practically anything by them. Oh, and I also like Lorena McKennitt rather a lot.

HEE, I have every Loreena McKennitt CD so far released.. I'm waiting for the latest concert cd, nights of alhambra... I don't know when it's supposed to be released, soon though.

I don't know that I've heard of gaelic storm, I shall go look that up now.

Interesting..... I don't think I know 2 other people IRL who have even heard of Loreena McKennitt, let alone listen to her!  I love her music.  I also like Susanne Vega, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, the Beatles, the Doors......  I guess my tastes are a bit varied.  ::) ;D

Count me eclectic also. I'm into just about everything.
Having a musician father really opened my mind to music in general. Music of all kinds. Not just because of constant exposure, but also because that musically-inclined gene was passed from my father to me. It's something that you're just instinctively aware of.

And yes, Jerry, metal is one of my favourite genres.  ;)

I don't have all of Loreena McKennitt's music, only about 19 songs I've purchased from iTunes, but I love what I do have. The first time I heard her music was several years ago before a Gaelic Storm concert. Whoever was in charge of the pre-show music decided to play "The Highwayman." My friend and I were in love with that poem and as soon as we realized what she was singing, thought, "OMG, who is this?!!"

Kiraela, Gaelic Storm is an Irish band based in California and played the steerage class band in "Titanic." I think their first album is the liveliest, the second is slightly more mellow. The third, Tree, is a little more mellow, but still a really good CD (and my favorite). To me the fourth CD, "How Are we Getting Home", is a pass, and their latest one is better, but not quite on par as their first three albums.

It's wonderful to see other people who like Loreena McKennitt's music as well as I do.  Kiraela, I don't have every one released, but I'm working on it!

My musical tastes are quite varied, ranging from New Age, to Classical (minus most opera), classic rock, alternative, country (mostly the modern stuff), hard rock (but not the kind you can't really tell if it's music or just screaming), goth (is that what groups like Inkubus Sukkubus are lumped under?), a *teeny-tiny* bit of rap (do Kid Rock and Eminem count?), I lose track sometimes.

Has anyone here every listened to anything by the group Bond?  I love their music!

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for other groups with a similar sound/style like that of Lacuna Coil or Evanescence?  I've seen albums that *look* like they might, but with store return policies being what they are for CDs, I hesitate to buy anything new without knowing if I already like it.

Renchick: If you're open to some indy sorts of things, where you'd have to buy the music directly from the artist... and you don't have a problem with myspace(i know a bunch of people who think it's the devil) I can list off a couple you might like. HEH. actually it'd be easier to give you a link to my myspace friends list... it's almost all bands, and almost everything that isn't harp, is female fronted metal/rock..

and yes Inkubus Sukkubus, switchblade symphony, sisters of mercy, etc are all "goth" bands. (and yes, I have at least two cds of each band mentioned... :D)

Okay, I admit it.. I'm rather eclectic too... :D

If you like Lacuna Coil and Evanescence you might like Echoes Of Eternity, Otep (they are kind of on the heavy side though), In This Moment and Nightwish.

If you go to amazon.com you can listen to samples of most songs to see if you like something or not.

Lets see now...I like a whole bunch of stuff.  Clasical, hard rock, opera, country (old country) almost everything! I was brought up on Led Zep, Queen, Kiss, AC/DC, The Who, Pink Floyd, stuff like that. ::)

I'm a Finn, therefore I like heavy metal  ;D

I listen most: Nightwish, Rammstein, Within Temptation, my newest great discovery Turisas, Rhapsody (of Fire, they had to change their name for some legal issues).  I guess I should also mention Alice Cooper and Manowar.

I also like more peaceful music like Era and Adiemus, movie soundtracks (recently I've listened Lady in the Water soundtrack a lot), and then there are some odd bands, especially Finnish, that I just like for some inexplicable reason...like Pohjannaula that has this fantastic shamanic folk rock music...and Viikate.

Modified: RenChick, somewhere in my journal (Galadriel's Mirror Shows Many Things) is a written introduction to Nightwish. Read and do as instructed!  ;)

lol! Did a lot of Finns really protest Lordi's nomination for the Eurovision contest? I've only read about it on Wikipedia so I'm not sure how true that is.

Title: Re: Music
Post by Galadriel on Aug 28th, 2007 at 9:14am
Oh yes, especially more conservative folks. Finns have traditionally taken Eurovision song contests quite seriously, maybe because our success in there has been so bad it's become a legend. Moreover, the second in Finnish finale was this every MIL's dream guy with pretty little voice, suit and a neat short haircut. So, there were indeed many who thought that sending Lordi to the contest was a national shame.
After he won though, that talk ended pretty much overnight and national shame become a national heroes (in his hometown, there is now Lordi's plaza, and if my memory serves me right, Amen has a lookalike statue in his home town and so on...). Overall, the whole media circus was quite amusing to follow. I'm not a huge fan of Lordi's music, but it was inspirational to see them succeed in a contest where great many "good", noncontroversial performers had failed miserably over the years.

Title: Re: Music
Post by juri on Aug 29th, 2007 at 4:43am
Thanks a lot, Galadriel! I only know three of their songs so I think I'm more of a casual fan (except when I almost started head-banging on the bus to "Hard Rock Hallelujah")... Er, but they're interesting enough to make me want to learn more about them. Not having any cultural contest for Lordi and the controversy about them, it was nice to get the perspective of one of their fellow countrymen.

I forgot to include Within Temptation but in my opinion they are kind of on the heavier side but not as heavy as Otep 8-)

And, I could include Therion but the female vocals are more opera/symphony style but I really love the mixture of heavy metal and opera/symphony.  If you have not heard of Therion my favorite albums by them are Sirius B and Lemuria and An Arrow From The Sun is my favorite Therion song 8-)

I just realized something today, having a boyfriend whose passion is music, who knows people who own studios, who knows some of the coolest industrial musicians.... can sometimes rock. Especially when He also knows how to make the home music center, have the same quality of a recording studio : AKA sitting here, with Lacuna coil playing, with studio grade speakers and subwoofers, turned up HIGH... it's like being at a concert, except without all the sweaty unwashed pervs and mosh pits.

I do have a problem with myspace, unfortunately.  I'm very paranoid in this computer age of personal information out where anyone can get to it.  I guess it's because I'm a very private person and don't give my trust easily.  I'll play around with it and see if I can create an account that doesn't require alot of info.  In which case I'll be more than happy to get a link to your myspace friends.  I've been thinking quite a bit lately about delving into the indy music sphere.

I did check out these groups on Amazon.  Unfortunately, Echoes of Eternity did not have any previews available that I could find. :(  Otep I did find some for, you're right they are on the heavy side, but I did like them.  I couldn't find any previews for In This Moment either.  :(  Now, Nightwish I did like!  Some of it reminded me of the elements I really like in the Metallica S&M album.

Thanks so much for the suggestions Galadriel.  I found your list and will definitely follow it.  I also checked out a couple of the other bands you mentioned, and they sound like ones I will enjoy as well.  I already have a couple of albums by Rammstein that I enjoy listening to.

You mentioned the more peaceful music.  Have you heard any music by Magna Canta or Enigma?  They have sounds very similar to the two you mentioned and I quite enjoy them.

Is there someplace to check out the music by the last two you mentoned - Viikate and Pohjannaula?  I tried finding them on Amazon but no luck.  I'll try searching a little harder tonight with Google and such, but I'll accept any help!

I join the Loreena McKennitt-fans, she's amazing! The first song I heard with her, the Bonny Swans, made me go  :o, lol. I also listen a lot to Enya, Queen and different soundtracks that gets stuck in my head like Corpse Bride etc.  :) Buuut right now, I'm listening to Joan Baez "Sweet Sir Galahad", trust me to like a song with a title that involves a knight.  ;)

I like Enya, I really really like Queen and I like soundtracks because they are like compilations which usually have a good variety of songs on them.

But I mainly like soundtracks which have heavy metal on them such as the first and second Resident Evil soundtracks.

RenChick I have one album from Enigma, but I haven't heard of Magna Charta. I'll check it out!

Viikate and Pohjannaula will probably be very difficult to find. They are small Finnish bands that make their music in Finnish and I don't think they are in international distribution at all. I'd be happy to send you some samples though- PM if you are interested.

Right now I'm listening to NW's newest, Dark Passion Play. I think it will be released in US tomorrow (something like that).

Yes, Nightwishes Dark Passion Play was released Oct. 2nd. in the U.S. and I either want the Collectors Edition or the special box set and all I could find at our local stores was the regular edition.

So, I will probably get it on the internet hopefully soon.

I have not been listening to as much music as I usually do but I did buy the newest White Stripes cd Icky Thump (which is playing as I type this).

It is pretty good and so far I like the title song, Conquest (my favorite on the cd), Little Cream Soda and Bag And Bone.

I also bought three of Opeth's CD's but they belong in the heavy metal thread ::)

When I am not in a metal mood (which is not very often) I do like mellow music such as Barry Manilow and Tom Jones.

Well, I bought my first Frank Sinatra CD yesterday called Sinatra Reprise:  The Very Good Years.  I am listening to it right now.

My favorite of his is Theme From New York, New York 8-)  I also like Luck Be A Lady, The Best Is yet To Come, Love And Marriage (most people who watched the tv show Married...With Children know this song), I've Got You Under My Skin, Strangers In The Night and My Way 8-)

Not only do I like his singing but the music is pretty good also 8-)

And, I did not know this until recently but Jim Morrison from The Doors said his idol was Frank Sinatra and he actually wanted to sing like him and he was inspired by crooners such as Frank Sinatra :o

I have that Reprise CD - it's one of my favorites.  There is another compilation CD of Sinatra's work - Songs for Swingers and Songs for Lovers.  I think that's it - I can't find mine right now.   :-[

I am usually a metal person.  Zombie (Rob or White), Megadeth, local band Super Sternal Notch and some of a Christian band Red - they do the "Breathe into Me" song that is played on rock radio out here.

I have a pretty wide range when it comes to music.
Also in my collection:
The irish rovers library - irish folk music mixed with a little pop
country - The older singers - not so much the groups
Some dance (I guess) - Pink I"m Not Dead is one of my favorites

And lots of soundtracks!  The Practical Magic one is in the top 3.

:)

I am listening to Zombie Live right now 8-)  I have liked them/him ever since I saw the video on the original MTV Headbangers Ball for Thunder Kiss '65.
Rob Zombie has been to our state twice now but we did not really have the money both times to go see him :'(

I like a lot of Christan music but I have not heard of Red?  How many CD's do they have?  I will check them out on the internet sometime later.

Out of curiousity, how big is your collection?  Mine is pretty big but probably not as big as some people have ::)

Jerry

Title: Re: Music
Post by LittleLuc on Jul 5th, 2008 at 11:59am
I would love to see Zombie live, but I am in the same situation with the money.   :(  One of my ex-boyfriends played More Human Than Human for me once, and I've been hooked ever since!
Useless point of information - did you know that he is a vegetarian because he saw a slaughterhouse video when he was in high school and was so effected by it, he chose to never eat meat again?   :D

I think Red only has the one CD out.  It's called "End of Silence."  They have a couple songs on that CD that are pretty good, but some of the slower stuff just doesn't do it for me.  I like Breath Into Me because it's hard and heavy and fast, and the singer is literally screaming "Breath Into ME!!!"  I know that feeling!!  :D  A friend of mine at church told me to check out "Demon Hunters" because they are kinda along the lines, and he is a Zombie fan too, so I trust his judgement - I just haven't made it over to the store to buy the CD.

I have a pretty good collection.  I have about 350 CDs.   :-[    I have a wide taste of music, and when I was working two jobs, I would "treat" myself once a month to a CD.  I would buy entire CDs for just one or two of the songs.   Those days are over, so now I only get to buy maybe two or three a year.

How big is your collection?

Title: Re: Music
Post by Jerry on Jul 5th, 2008 at 12:27pm
As of yesterday I am up to 2,132 CD's but I count a 2 CD or 3 or more CD boxset as more than 1 CD like some people might.

I have been collecting them since the early 90's when I got sick of my cassettee tapes getting stretched  and always having to clean the heads and stuff on the player (even though CD players should be cleaned also).

My very first CD was Amy Grant: The Collection and I did not even have a player to listen to it :o  I got it by accident because I ordered it through a music club and they sent the CD instead of a cassettee ::)

Anyway, some people are surprised when I tell them I alphabetize my CD's and I just tell them I do that because then I can find a particular CD I am in the mood for :P

That is interesting about Rob Zombie 8-)  I actually like useless knowledge like that ::)

Holy cow!  over two thousand!!  :o   I'm so jealous...   I only have one box set - The Lynyrd Skynyrd box.  (Sometimes I gotta let my red-neck peek out from under my hair.)   :)  I didn't count the double CDs as two cuz I forgot.   :)

I got my first CD before I had a player too!  My boyfriend bought me Dwight Yoakam's Gone, but just assumed I had a player.  It was about 8 months before I could listen to that CD.  I can't tell you how many of my CDs I have converted to tapes!  I still  :-[  have a tape player in my truck ( it IS a 1994), and since I can't afford the new truck or stereo, I'll continue to deal with it.  I also gave up on the little CD player with a tape adapter - the sound is just intolerable!

I also alphabetize my CDs, but they are grouped first.   ::)   Country, metal, irish, pop/dance, rock, series (I own the Time Life Classic Country and Contemporary Country collections), and comedy.  It is SO much easier to find them that way!

I usually save the music into my computer, then take a jump (flash) drive to work so I can listen there too. That way I don't have to cart the CDs back and forth.  I save a lot on the computer at work, but whenever I want to hear something else, I bring it in that way.

There are a couple of friends at work that get very surprised by the music I listen to.  This weeks tracks have been Zombie, Red, Dean Martin, Evanescence (sp?), Disney's Lilo & Stitch, Megadeth, and Pink.
I can be kindof moody.   :D
