THE BLACK KNIGHT
Let me take you to time of chivalry, when knights courted ladies in the splendor of long ago. In such simple times superstitions abounded in the small country called Italia and so did legends…. Chapter 1 Among the rolling hills of Florence there lived a maiden named Lil, she was daughter to Sir Traxus, a prominent knight of the land. Lil was very fair with long golden brown hair that fell in curls to her knees. Her bright blue eyes sparkled with innocents, her complexion was milky white and as smooth as the finest silk. She was sweet and kind natured but at seventeen she was still not wed. Many knights came to court her but she wanted none. Her father asked her why she would not take any of their proposals. Lil replied that she did not love these knights, nor did they love her. Still they courted her and showered her with gifts of jewels and gowns, but they could not turn her heart. One day Lil was out in the forest with her maidservant, Celine. They went about picking herbs and flowers for the castle cook. Celine began to tell stories of the Black Knight. He was their local legend, a phantom knight who was evil and whose horse breathed fire. “Oh, I have heard the stories before.” Lil said and grimaced. She was growing tired of her maids constant dribbling about ghosts and demons. “Well, not a soul has ever seen his face. They say he must be as ugly as a toad and that he rides through the night on his black steed and steals babies from their cribs.” Said Celine and quickly crossed herself. Lil shook her head, such silly stories she thought. Looking up she saw something ahead. Curious, she came upon a clearing; there at the roots of an elm tree was a blue rose. Enchanted, she went over to touch it’s soft petals. Lil reached down to pick it up and found another hand on hers. She gasped and looked up to find herself gazing into the most beautiful blue eyes she had ever seen. The young man before her looked down at her, a blush came to his cheeks. “Forgive me for frightening you, fair lady.” The tall young man wore a black tabard trimmed in gold; his leggings and boots were black as well. His garb bore no symbols, nor did he wear a sword or dagger. His jet-black hair was tied back and fell to his waist; a goatee graced his lip and chin. Lil was entranced, he was so handsome, and his voice was deep and gentle. “My lady you are so fair, this rose is for you.” “I have never seen a blue rose before.” Lil said taking the rose from him and holding it to her tender breast. “Nay my lady, it is a rose as rare as your beauty.” Said the stranger. Lil blushed and looked away. “What is your name sir?” Lil asked. “I…I am Richard, fair maiden.” he bowed. “I am Lil Traxus, she smiled, I have never seen you before, are you a squire?” “Aye my lady.” Richards’s voice faltered, as he looked into her eyes. “Lil!” A voice called from behind them. Lil quickly looked in the direction of the call and turned back to Richard. “I am sorry but I must away!” she gasped. Lil gathered her skirts and turned, they young man reached his hand out to her. “May I see you again my lady?” asked Richard. There was a sincerity in his eyes she had never seen in any of the suitors who had come to her door. Perhaps she should give him a chance? “Aye, the day after next I will be here.” said Lil. Richard took her hand and tenderly kissed it. His soft lips made Lil tremble, his moustache brushed her hand like silk. He took up from her hand. “Till then fair one” Richard whispered. That evening Sir Traxus noticed a change in his daughter. “My girl your cheeks are flushed, dare I say you’re in love?” Traxus said in a jovial tone. “Nay, I just…” Lil looked down at her embroidery. “Come now, who is he?” Probed Traxus, eager to know if his daughter had finally picked a suitor. “Just a dream nothing more” Lil muttered quietly. Traxus gave her an odd look, but let the subject go for now. Lil’s heart hurt, Richard was a squire, and her father would probably not allow a marriage to any less then a knight. Lil found herself falling in love with the mysterious handsome squire. She thought to herself, squire, knight what was the difference, a squire is soon a knight. Surly love should have no bonds. But still she could not tell her father; he would have the lad flogged for meeting his daughter without a chaperone. To be continued.... |

Chapter 1 continued...
Lil would meet with her mysterious squire whenever she could and over time their love grew. But one day in early fall the young lovers met for what might be there last time. One that afternoon Lil was able to slip out to see her squire and Celine came with her. “So you are going to see you’re amore my lady?” said Celine. Lil rounded on her. “Aye and you are not to tell a soul!” Stopping she told Celine to wait before the clearing. As Lil reached the Elm tree, Richard rose from the behind the tree. Tenderly they embraced. “Ah Lil.” Richard whispered into her ear, his voice full of longing. “Richard.” she sighed. “I have missed you so. I have lived in darkness; a shroud hangs over my heart when you are not in my sight. But now the sunshine’s in my soul for you are here my love”. His words melted her heart. “I have dreamt of your handsome face and have longed to be in your arms.” said Lil. Trembling Richard leaned down to her face, slowly their lips met. Their tongues found each other an intertwined slowly, savoring each sensation. Richard held her delicate body gently to his. Their hearts beat as one as they lost themselves in the sweet kiss. As their lips gently parted Richard put his forehead to Lils and closed his eyes. His heart was racing like a runaway horse. “Forgive me Lil, I must tell you what I am.” Lil looked up at him. Richard opened his eyes and backed away. Lil reached for him, but he withdrew from her. “Richard what is wrong?” “Please, you must hear me!” Richard growled. to be continued.... |

Chapter 1 continued.
A frightened look came to Lil’s eyes. Richard saw her fear and gathered his nerve; it was now or never. Taking a breath he looked at Lil. “I am Richard Baronhart. I am he who is most dreaded, cast form society into a world of shadow. I am the black knight of legend; feared and hated. I am the stuff of stories and dishonor.” He turned his eyes from her in shame. Lil looked at him in shock, so it was true. There was a black knight after all. But again this was a man, not a ghost she reasoned. Tears of shame came to the knights’ eyes and he wiped them away. “I did not want to lie to you as I live by the code of chivalry.” “Oh Richard” Lil whispered. “Lil, I will understand if you reject me, for my reputation has been ruined. My rivals have seen to the destruction of my life. I had foolishly thought I could find love”. Lil looked over at him, he looked so sad. But her mind was already made up. “Richard, you are the only man in my heart, be you the Black Knight or no, it is you I want”. Said Lil. Slowly he turned to her; he could almost not believe her words. But she had said them, words he thought he would never hear. Stepping up to him she brushed her fingers over his cheek. Richard closed his eyes and sighed. “My lady you have saved me from the darkness in my soul”. Gently he embraced her. “Now I can tell you what my heart holds”. Richard knelt before her and took her hands. “Lil I love you and adore you with all my heart and soul. Wed me my love take me as your husband and I will love you forever. My heart yearns for you, take me from the shadow of my dark life so I may find happiness”. Lil looked down into his eyes and kneeling down put her arms around him, slowly she ran her check against his. “Richard I love you my knight, aye I will be yours. I will fill you heart with joy. I will bring passion to your bed, and through your love I will give you sons”. Richard eyes filled with tears. “Lil you have ended the darkness in my soul, I shall be a man, for now I have my lady”. Lil put her hand to her mouth. “Nay…oh Richard…” “What is wrong?” Richard eyes shined with panic. Tears welled up in Lil’s eyes as she looked up at him. “I just remembered! Father was talking about setting a tournament. The winner shall wed me. What will we do?” Lil put her head on his chest and sobbed. Richard held her tight; he looked up at the sky. Tears stung his eyes as felt his face turn red, gritting his teeth he trembled as fury raged through his heart. “Richard I am yours, I want no other”. Her voice shook as tears ran down her face. “Then my love I shall best the lot of them. For their hearts shall tremble at the sight of the Black Knight!” Calming his anger the young man took a breath. “Please do not cry” Richard said softy as he wiped the tears from her eyes. “I must fight for you and prove my love”. “You are my love and my life” she sobbed. He looked in her eyes. “And you are my salvation, for in your arms I’ve known only joy. But, he sighed, I must fight and be your champion”. Lil looked at him, he speaks with his heart and it is true. “Richard you are most valiant and brave” Slowly their lips met, Richard laid her gently onto the soft grass as he kissed her passionately. Lil put her arms around her love, her mind whirled as his kiss warmed her heart. Holding Lil in his arms, to feel her so close and to kiss her so deeply sent Richard into a state of euphoria he had never new existed. Slowly they parted; her innocent eyes looked into his as Richard held her tightly. “Never let me go” Lil sighed. “I shall not for I love you my Lil.” said Richard. He gazed down at her beautiful face. So I must don the armor of the black knight once more, Richard thought, but this time it is to win my ladies hand. And for her I would give my life.] to be continued |

Chapter 2
The day of the tournament came and Lil was nervous. She prayed her black knight would be victorious. But due to his past if he did win would father allow her to wed him? Lil dressed for the event. In her rooms she went through her dresses. Celine arranged her hair and wound ribbons in it. As Lil looked in her mirror a knock came to the door. Celine answered and came back with a box. “Look my lady you have received another gift”. Said Celine. “Oh another?” Lil frowned. All morning the competitors had been sending her gifts, she took it and gasped. It was an ornately craved jet box with a red griffin on the lid. “No knight I know has this coat of arms”. “It is his.” Celine smiled. Lil opened it to find a beautiful gold necklace with a large garnet; the stone was etched with the griffin emblem. “There’s a note as well” Celine handed it to her. My love, a gem to wear on you fair neck, as I fight today my heart will be full knowing you wear my emblem. With all my honor and love, The Black Knight. Celine helped her put the necklace on. The jewel blazed like fire at her throat. “He is most generous,” Celine said as she looked at the fabulous stone. “Aye, my knight is wonderful,” Lil said as she touched the jewel at her throat. As looked in the mirror Lil silently prayed for his victory. Holy Mother, please let my Richard win, may he be safe and true. ****** At the shore a ferryman slept at his post. The sun had not risen yet when he awoke to a noise. Terror filled his heart as he heard the ferry approach from Strega Island. Shaking in horror the ferryman stepped back as the giant black horse leapt onto the shore. It’s rider, clad in darkness, looked down and tossed him a gold florin. Fumbling the coin the old man crossing himself and backed away. The knight’s black cloak billowed around him as he turned and spurred his horse forward. The stallion’s hoofs hit the ground like thunder as he road off, his black clad squire sprinting beside him. “The black knight! God help us all!” The ferryman gasped. As Richard road in the early morning darkness, his mind went back to his sixteenth year. He was the most popular knight in the kingdom. But the envy of one person would be his down fall. Prince Willard boasted he was the best at arms in the kingdom and challenged Richard to a joust. The prince was badly wounded in the fight and as a result could not take up arms anymore. Richard was banished to Strega Island off the coast. Soon the court was full of stories of the evil black knight. There was old castle on Strega Island were Richard lived with his squire Reginald and a few loyal servants. At the age of twenty-five Richard felt so lonely, he knew he should be wed with sons by now, but no lady would have him. He would compete now and then at the tournaments. His true identity hidden beneath a reaper black facade. The new young knights would fight him only to come away bloodied. He recalled the battle when the neighboring county attacked their land. For two years he fought in that war. All the valiant acts came to nothing as the blow of one lance put him in ruins. He had heard of Lady Lil from his squire and thought it was worth a try to woo her. His prayers were answered for not only did she love him, he too loved her more then life. He knew this day would be a turning point in his life. For now he fought for Lil. I must win for her and prove that I am not a monster but a man. to be continued... |

Chapter 2....
As he approached the outskirts of the town Richard came to an old church. He stopped and Reginald held his horse, know as Wraith, as he dismounted. Pulling off his helm he enter the house of god. The red griffin stood out boldly on his black tabard in the gentle candlelight. Walking up to the altar he knelt pulled off his gauntlets and crossed himself. He lowered his dark head and prayed. “My lord God, grant me victory and the hand of my beloved Lil, for I will fight for her and prove my love, so may I be worthy in her fathers eyes to be her husband and Lord, amen”. As Richard crossed himself he looked up to see a priest standing to the right of him at the side doors. “Sir Richard?” the priest said. Richard eyed the old priest. “Sir Richard it is I, Father Rennold”, the priest went to him. Relief came to Richard’s heart. “Father!” He exclaimed. The priest walked up and embraced him. “My boy I have missed you, I thought you were dead”. Richard looked down. “Nay father I was put in exile.” “I see,” he said looking over his jet-black armor. “Aye Father I am the Black Knight” shame crossed his face. The priest smiled. “You are Richard Baronhart, a man not a demon or a ghost.” Richard smiled. “Thank you father.” Rennold looked at him. “Are you going to joust for the lady Lil today?” “Aye father, by chance of fate I was able to meet her and…and we fell in love. She knows I am the black knight but she doesn’t care. God help me as I fear we will never be together.” Father Rennold smiled. “Well my son the Lord can help in one way… Richard drew his bastard sword; the rich gold handle was studded with a large garnet. Father Rennold took the blade and blessed it in the name of St Michael. He placed the sword on the altar and turning blessed Richard. He made the sight of the cross on his forehead and on his hands that they be strong and over his heart that it would always be true. Richard looked up at the crucifix on the altar and crossed himself. The priest handed him his sword. Richard kissed the sliver blade and held it up before him. “My lord god, may my sword strike true.” Lowering the blade he slowly sheathed it. Putting on his gauntlets he looked up at Father Rennold. “Thank you father” his soulful eyes looked up at the priest. Father Rennold smiled. “It was good to see you once again, god be with you my son.” “God be with you Father”, Richard smiled and turning left the church. Taking his black helm from Reginald he put it on his head and opened the visor. His spirit felt renewed, he looked at his squire. “It has been so long since I was blessed”. Reginald smiled, his young faced beamed to see his lord so happy. “Aye my lord”. “I feel as if I’ve been knighted again”. The spirit of chivalry glowed in his heart as he rode on thought the morning mist. He smiled, I hope Lil liked the gifts I sent her. to be continued.... |

I very much liked the scene in the church, it reminds me of when I was very little, going to the midnight mass on christmas... I don't quite know why, but it gave me the same feeling. I think I am as spiritually refreshed as sir richard himself.

Chapter 2.....
Lil and Celine stood and looked in the mirror at Lil’s dress. It was the richest black velvet, trimmed with gold. The insides of her sleeves and skirt were also gold. Garnets encrusted the bodice and neckline; pearls studded the sleeves and skirt. “Your knight is very rich my lady, far richer then the other knights!” Celine squealed. Lil read the note that was attached. My Love, I would be honored if you were to wear my colors today. So I send you this gown fit for a Queen, as you are the ruler of my heart - The Black Knight She looked up from the letter. “Aye he is” Lil said, “his heart is rich with love and chivalry”. Lil met her father at the castle drawbridge as they departed. “Ah Lil, oh pray who sent you this dress?” He must be a count to able to give you such gifts. What is this?” he eyed the garnet at her throat. “Gifts father, nothing else” Lil smiled and kiss him on his ample cheek. Sir Traxus watched his daughter mount her horse. There was a griffin on her necklace and her dress is black and gold. Who is this knight that woos my daughter with the treasure of a King? As they road to the tournament Lil was excited as she would see her beloved. But she was worried, as what if Richard was banned from the joust due to his reputation; he was a contender like any other Knight. She prayed he would be allowed to compete. ****** As he reached the arena Richard pulled off into the woods. As in the past he was not allowed in the paddock. Reginald held Wraith as he dismounted. Richard gave his squire some money and mussed his blonde hair. “Register me under the usual name” he winked. “Aye my Lord” Reginald smiled and pulled his black hood over his face. Richard stood and stroked Wraiths velvet nose. He looked out at the arena; may today be my greatest victory he silently prayed. Reginald went to the registration table. The official raised an eyebrow. “And you are?” The squire looked at him through slits in his hood. “I am squire to the Black Knight”. The official’s eyes widened. “Nay, he has no honor here”. Reginald dropped the bag of gold coins on the table and folded his arms. The official eyed the coins and smiled. Taking a pen he wrote The Black Knight in the ledger and the amount. He wrote a receipt and stamped it with the official seal. He gave the paper to the squire as he grabbed the bag of coins. “Thank you” he leered. “My Lord” Reginald bowed and ran back to Richard. “He took it as always ” Reginald laughed as he handed him the slip and pulled off his hood. “Aye that money hungry swine would steal a penny from a blind child. " No matter, Richard looked up, I am registered and have my chance. I pray to god for victory as I love her so”. “You are the best there is my Lord Baronhart”. Richard blushed and cuffed him gently in the shoulder. The knight looked at his receipt, “Hmmm… my number is thirty four, I wonder how many more will show?” Walking over to a tree he turned, “Reginald I must tell you if I die today all I have is yours”. “My Lord” Reginald looked down. “And I ask that you clear my name. “Your Lordship, I am in your service Richard, Earl of Florence” he bowed. Richard smiled. “I haven’t heard that title in a long time Reginald, too long to keep such a secret. My cousin Prince Willard will come to terms with it today. He put his hand on the lad’s shoulder. I charge you save my lady from the winner”. “I will save her my Lord, I swear on my loyalty to you.” The knights paraded around the arena, their banners held high. A sea of brightly colored tunics made of a rainbow of colors. Their horses covered in flowing caparisons. From their seat in the stands Lil watched the parade with Celine. “Where is my Richard?” she sighed. The Black Knight was not allowed in the parade. But his squire displayed his banner, a red griffin on a black field. People booed and hiss at the colors of the Black Knight. Sir Traxus saw the banner and raised an eyebrow. HE is here, oh my daughter! He remembered the dress and the necklace. Oh god Nay! Surly she cannot be serious; she does not know what she does. When did they meet, how did they meet! He is a monster she cannot be in love with him. From his box across the arena Prince Willard saw the banner as well and taking his chalice dashed it to the floor. “He dares show his dishonorable face today!” “My liege, his advisor said, this event is open to all knights”. “I know you fool!” The prince snapped. Lil spotted the black banner. “Oh he is here!” She put her head on Celine’s lap.. “Aye my lady” Celine smiled.” Lil sat up and smoothed her black gown. “Why does he not ride in the parade?” “Because he is banished and is not allowed by the prince”. Lil looked across the arena to the royal box and frowned. “He’s the monster, not my Richard he is so wonderful!” “Aye my lady he embraces you with gentle hands and kisses you so sweetly” Lil face blushed red. “Celine, you spied on us!” “Aye my lady and I never saw such a romantic sight” she sighed. Lil blushed, reaching into her bodice she took out the blue rose Richard had given her. Its petals were still soft; she held it to her heart. to be continued.... |

Chapter 2......
Trumpets sounded in the arena signaling the beginning of the event. Lil sat and watched the contenders fight. Soon the arena was littered with splinters as more and more lances clashed. One knight was leading the points; he was Sir Benton Decosta. Lil knew of him, he was fifteen years old and she ascertained ate too much pasta from his ample girth. Sir Benton had sent her a white and green gown to match his colors. The shiny faced youth rode up to the stands and waved to her. Lil gave him a rye smile and wave. Trumpets sounded for the next contender. The shrill neigh of a horse sounded though the air, suddenly from over the hill charged a knight on a steed as black as pitch. “Richard!” She gasped. The stallion came thundering into the arena and stopping short reared up high. Its rider clad in ebony armor, upon his helm were three black plumes. The horse’s draped in a caparison as dark as night trimmed in fine gold. The sigil on the knights black tabard was a blood red griffin. The black knight reined in his horse and road up to the stands; he turned and looked up at Lil. She smiled and waved at him, he rose his hand to her and then put it on his heart. The audience went into an uproar. Sir Traxus paled to see his daughter acknowledge the black knight. Lil ripped the hem of her underdress and dropped it down to the black rider. Catching it in his hand he lifted his visor and kissed it. He passed it to his squire who tied the white silk around his arm. Turning he spurred his horse forward, Wraiths hooves stepped proudly as he circumvented the arena. Richard held his banner high as he passed the Royal box. The prince seethed in anger. “ The nerve of him”, he growled. Lil watched the black knight ride by, never had she seen such an ornate suit of armor or such a noble steed. “Oh Richard, you are truly magnificent” she sighed. People around her were talking and saying evil things about the black knight. Lil put her hand to her heart, I know better for he is the most wonderful man in the world; I care not for the gossip of fools. As Sir Benton looked at the black knight fear rose in his heart. He had heard the stories; no one has ever bested him. He was a demon straight from hell. Richard rode up to the weapons rack. Reginald looked up at him. “God be with you my lord,” he said as he handed him a lance. Richard nodded and galloped up to the line. Lil sat with her hand clasped before her. “Be careful my love” she whispered. Benton road into position, his horse reared and tossed its head. Wraith sidestepped and whistles loudly. “Easy” Richard said pulling back on the reins. Sir Reginald stood to the side on his left. Wraith pawed the ground hard. Benton shook as he looked down the lane. “Death himself” he gasped as he eyed the black apparition before him. The flag dropped and Richard spurred his horse forward. The giant stallion lunged forward hitting the ground like thunder and charged down the lane. Reginald saw Benton come off the line. “He’s coming about my lord, fast!” Richard looked through the slit in his visor at Benton. He lowered his lance and aimed for his shoulder. They clashed in a fury of splinters. Benton’s broken lance flew through the air as he fell to the ground, the crowd sighed loudly. Richard brought Wraith around sharply and tossed his broken lance to the side. The crowd booed and tossed insults into the air. Lil looked around nervously as she expected the royal guard to arrest Richard; she glanced at the prince, his face was set in anger. The joust continued; more knights clashed adding to their points. Richard met his opponents with strength and drive, thought distracted by his terrible legend they proved non-the challenge. But as Richard waited for his next turn he noticed a knight who surpassed all the skills of the others. He was a big brute, his armor heavy reinforced, his steed a beast of mighty strength. Richard could tell he was not of this land and no doubt he was from he northern half of Europe. This knight fought mercilessly and with expert skill. He had three squires who ran about him serving him golden chalices of wine and fusing over him with great lavishness. “He is Sir Guther Astar, Reginald said, he hails from the Nordic counties” Perhaps he is royalty Richard thought to himself, he had never seen Astar’s colors before, a field of blue marked with a trio of crowns. Lil also noticed this knight; she trembled to see him unhorse his opponents with terrible ease. Looking at the score board she saw that Richard and Sir Astar were evenly matched. Astar, unlike the other knights, had not even acknowledged Lil till now. He road up to the stands and looked up at her. Lil gazed at him for a moment and turned away. Astar gave her a snide glance. Richard eyed him with anger and disgust. He spurred Wraith forward and road up to Lil. She turned to him and her expression changed, her face flushed with love and hope. Richard was lost her gaze when a voice came to his ears. “Fiend, what makes you think you will win?” Richard turned sharply and cast Astar a dark stare. “You no doubt fight for a prize. I fight for my ladies love and honor” Astar looked him over. “We shall see” he growled and trotted off to the sidelines. To be continued.... |

Chapter 2......
Soon Astar and Richard were the only knights left to joust. Richard was tired, his arms and shoulders where sore but he held his head high. The trumpets blew and once again he paraded his colors around the arena, Astar trotted ahead of him smugly. The officials placed their flags for all to see on field’s scoreboard. “This is it!” Lil gasped nibbling her fingernails. The knights went to their sides and took up their lances. Richard turned to Reginald as he took his lance from the boy. “Remember what I told you if I do not win.” “I shall, god be with you my Lord.” Riding up to the line Richard looked at the giant knight before him. He would have three passes at him, he prayed it would not take as many to unhorse him. Lil watched breathlessly as they awaited the flag to fall. The crowd went deathly quite. Sir Traxus watched with worried eyes, his sweaty hands gripping his chalice. The flag fell and the two knights clashed. The crowd sighed to see they were both still in the saddle. Reginald scrambled to make ready another lance as Richard galloped up to him. The black knight tossed his broken lance down and took a skin of water form his squire, took a drink and tossed it back to him and grabbed his lance. “Finally, an opponent worth fighting!” At the line Sir Astar had trouble controlling his horse, the stallion fought his commands. Wraith too began to act up. The horse had had enough of this and so have I Richard thought as he stared down the line. The flag dropped and he spurred Wraith hard, at the last minute he aimed his lance for the other’s visor. The lance hit and shattered sending the big oaf from the saddle and crashing to the ground. Astar’s flag was removed form the scoreboard and Richard’s put in the prominent position. Trumpets sounded the end of the match. “He has won! Oh god my poor daughter!” Lil’s father yelled. The crowd was in an uproar as Lil went down to the field and ran up to the black knight. Dropping his broken lance Richard reached down and lifted her into his lap. He opened his visor and kissed her passionately. Richard held Lil to his chest. “Thank you lord for this victory” he uttered looking up to he sky. His deep blue eyes turned to the prince and narrowed dangerously as he road over to the royal box. “Richard!” The Prince exclaimed. The crowd went quite. “Cousin Willard, tell them! Tell then what you did to me. I, Richard Baronhart, the rightful Earl of Florence!” Richard proclaimed for all to hear. Lil looked at him, an Earl! My love is royalty! “You banished me and said I was dead. But I am no monster I am a man!” The crowd began to talk wildly. He’s the Earl! He’s not a ghost or monster! Why would the prince do something like that and to family as well! Hearing the peoples comments the prince grew nervous. “Guards, arrest him!” he called. Richard looked down at Lil. “Do you trust me?” “With all my heart.” “Then hold on tight!” He spurred Wraith hard and galloped out of the arena. The royal guard chased after them. Lil held on to Richard as they raced to the end of town. They reached the shore, Wraith whinny loudly as he leapt to the barge. The ferryman gasped as the black apparition landed beside him, the horse hooves sparked as he slid to a stop. Richard turned to him as he got Wraith under control, quickly the old man pushed off from the shore, destination: Strega island. The royal guard reined in their horses at the shore, they dare not follow, and crossing themselves they turned back to the road. Lil inhaled the salty air and looked up at Richard; his blue eyes reflected the sky. “You are my champion” she sighed. Richard pulled off his helm and dropped to the wooden planks beneath them. “My love, I did it for you, to prove myself worthy to be yours”. His sad eyes where full of love. “My knight is worthy and true; you are all I ever wanted.” “My lady and you are all my heart has ever dreamed”. They kissed tenderly as the ferryman guided the barge into the mists. To be continued.... |

Chapter 3
As the mist broke Lil could see the outline of a castle with many turrets. “It is like a dream,” she said as she looked up at it. Richard smiled. “It is called Ravens Castle, but it shall no long be a prison”. He whispered as he brushed lips across the top of her head. They disembarked at the shore. The ferryman looked up at them. Lil smiled and the old man blushed. Richard flipped him a gold florin. “Thank you signore” he said removing his hat. They rode up to the drawbridge; heavy gears turned as it lowered before them. As they crossed, Lil looked down to see sharks in the moat below. In the courtyard Richard swung out of the saddle and gently helped Lil down. A steward came and took hold of Wraith. Lil looked around in wonder. The cracked walls of the courtyard were lined with blue roses that climbed up and over the ramparts. An old fountain covered in ivy stood in the center of the courtyard, which was paved with mosaic tiles. “Come my love” he took her hand. They entered the castle thought the main doors. Lil looked around; the main hall was enormous. Tapestries covered the broken the walls, at the far end there was a fireplace and above it was a grand coat of arms depicting a red griffin on a white field. She looked at it; Richard put his arm around her waist. “My colors weren’t always black, my armor was silver and my colors where white and red. But when I was exiled I was forced to change my colors. Something my cousin demanded”. As night fell they had dinner served to them in the solar. Richard had dressed in his best clothes and had the room cleaned and decorated with roses and candles. Sitting at the table stole glimpse of each other as they ate. The warm breath of the fire and the soft fur rugs at their feet “Richard, your castle is wonderful”. Lil said and smiled at him from across the table. “Thank you, is the food to your satisfaction?” Richard said and took a drink from his chalice. “Aye it is.” Lil said as she looked out on the feast before her. The dolce were exquisite and she found herself eating more then one. Richard smiled to see her holding up a swan made of spun sugar on the tip of her finger. “Such lovely and sweet things. I cannot understand why anyone would think bad of you” Lil said. Richard put his hand on hers. “Not everyone is as kind as you my Lil” After dinner they went for a walk along the ramparts of the castle. Waves gently lapped the shore below as they held each other and looked up at the crescent moon. “My lady I love you, I... my heart hurts for I cannot be with you tonight. I so want you my Lil, but I honor you my lady and your maidenhood, “You have won the right my love, I will yield.” She said, innocents shined in her eyes as she looked up at him. Richard looked away and sighed. “Nay I cannot, no matter how much I long for you. I will not take an unwed maiden”. A rustling noise came from the shadows. Quickly Richard put Lil behind him and drew his sword. “Show you’re self and done with it!” he growled. Out of the shadows toddled a little old man in a priest habit. “Ahem! Well, well I was just in the neighborhood and thought I would see how you to were doing”. “Father Rennold?” Richard cried. “Ah my boy, oh I see you have the lovely Lil with you. He scratched his head thoughtfully. Well, I think I can solve your little problem.” Richard sheathed his sword and took Lil hands. “Will you my love, will you wed me now?” Excited Lil looked at the priest and then at Richard. “Aye my love!” She smiled. Chapter 3 continued.....
In the castle’s chapel Lil and Richard knelt before each other. Father Rennold smiled and opening his bible began the benediction. Reginald stood beside them. He had just made it back to the castle and was happy to witness his lords wedding. “You have made my dream a realty” Richard whispered. Lil looked into his eyes. “My heart is full as I marry a man who loves me as much as I love him”. Lil sweet voice whispered. They put their left hands together as Father Rennold place the cord of unity around their wrists. Richard looked into Lil eyes. “I Richard Baronhart, Earl of Florence, promise to love and cherish you for the rest of my life, all that is mine is yours. I will honor and defend you to my death”. Gently Richard placed a large garnet ring on Lil’s finger. Lil looked at him. “I have no ring for you” she whispered. Smiling he placed a ring in her hand. “And I, Isabelle Traxus promise to love you and cherish you for the rest of my life. All that this mine is yours, my heart, my body and my love. I will love you forever”. Lil’s hand trembled as she slipped a large gold ring in the form of a shield on his finger. Father Rennold removed the cord and placing it on the altar, he turned to them and scribed the sign of the cross in the air “By the power granted to me by the holy roman church I pronounce you Lord and Lady Baronhart. Nel nome del padre e del figlio e del sant'amen di ” Blushing he smiled at them and wiped the tears of joy from his eyes. “You may kiss your lady my lord”. Lil’s innocent eyes looked up at her husband. “My lady Baronhart” Richard cooed. Tenderly they kissed and placed their heads together. “I will be yours forever my Lord” Lil whispered. “And forever shall my love be true” Richard breathed. They rose and left the chapel, as they walked they looked into each other’s eyes. Father Rennold watched them leave then he turned and looked at the cross. “It is a good thing I have done today my lord, I have completed their happiness”. “Do you always talk to god that way?” said Reginald with a coy smile. “Of course my boy, that the only way to get him to listen….” Richard took Lil to his bedchamber. The large room was hung with black and red velvet curtains. Soft furs lined the floor around a beautiful golden bed, which graced the middle of the room. It was ornately carved with flowers and leaves; the headboard and bedcover depicted a proud red griffin. As Richard laid her down on the velvet coverlet Lil looked up at him and trembled. “Do not fear me” his deep voice was so gentle Lil heart calmed. Slowly they undressed each other with trembling hands. Lil looked at his strong body and sighed, her heart shook in her chest. As Richard beheld Lil he held back his tears for she was so lovely, delicate yet buxom. God has blessed me with a beautiful wife, I...I am unworthy of such a women. Richard looked away, fighting his tears. “My husband?” Lil said. Richard turned to her and took her hands. “My Lil, I shall prove myself worthy to you’’ Lil looked into his sad blue eyes. “But you already have man of my heart” Taking her in his arms kissed her passionately. Gently the black knight took his beloved maiden and loved her with all his heart. There tender sighs floated on the breeze across Strega Island as they found the love they always wanted. As time went by their love never faded. Prince Willard died and with him the evil tales he told. But now tales are told of the heroic black knight and his lady. How he jousted for her hand and loved her so much. And how she never feared him and loved him no matter who he was. Richard regained his title and his honor. He still rides and jousts in the town of Florence. But now his colors are white and red and his son is his squire. The lady Lil sits in her flowing white dress and watches her beloved knight compete, a blue rose clutched to her heart. The story of the black knight is now a legend in Italia. It is the story of the lands most romantic hero. And so ends this tale of the black knight a tale of true love. For to love someone for who they truly are is what love is really all about. La Fine |

I hope you all enjoyed this story. It was written in 2001 and is my first attempt at a fairy tale. Over the years I have added and subtracted from it and have set it in different counties as well. One day I will make it into a story book with pictures. Thanks for reading! :)
