Title: Lisabelle's Edward the Brave
Post by Lisabelle on Nov 19th, 2007 at 11:38am
Chapter 1

As the sun rose over the horizon, Jonathan entered Prince Edward’s room and looked toward the bed.  All he could see was a tuft of red hair sticking up from under the covers.  His highness had had another rough night, he ascertained.  Jonathan laid out the princes clothing and made ready a basin of water. As he poured a chalice of wine, a groan came from under the covers.
“I gather my lord did not sleep well?” Jonathan said quietly.
A large befreckled hand came out from under the dark blue coverlets and pushed them back. The prince emerged, and pushed his long red hair out his eyes and squinted in the morning light.
“Nay, I did not.” Edward groaned.
Sitting up, he took a chalice from Jonathan and drained it.  The wine refreshed him and placing down the chalice, he pulled off his nightshirt and stretched, flexing the muscles of his five foot eleven frame.  Freckles ran down his strong shoulders and arms, his left bicep were adorned with a tattoo of a falcon in flight with two letter A’s interlocked below it.  Jonathan dressed him as usual in his favorite outfit, brown caussess and a black tunic.  Edward stood quietly as his aid fussed with his clothes; his thoughts were of the dream he had. He was in his armor upon a tall cliff, a dragon so large it blacks out the sky descends on him, and he fights it mercilessly but his sword cannot damage its black flesh.  It strikes at him like a snake wounding him mortally. And then it vanishes leaving him to die while he could still here it mocking roar.  There must be a meaning to these dreams he pondered as he walked up to his dressing table.  He looked in the mirror and rubbed his chin.  The ginger red stubble made him look older then his twenty-four years. Perhaps he should let it grow, he thought.  His green eyes where blood shot and his skin was pale making the freckles on his nose and cheeks stand out boldly.  Splashing water on his face he took his razor and worked away at his beard.  There he thought, all done, as he finished up.  He brushed his hair back and watched two long bangs fall into his eyes; he smiled as he saw the refection of a young boy at the door.
“Edward!”  The little lad cried and ran up to him.  The prince knelt and lifted the boy in his arms and held him tight.
“How are you today little master?”
“We are here to see Kira” the boy squealed.
“Oh and so you shall” Edward winked.

Chapter 1 ....

He placed the boy down and looked to see the fair and lovely Alyssa. She wore a white dress trimmed in gold that hugged her hips and breasts softly, her light brown hair was unbound and fell to her waist.  There eyes met and the she smiled.  Edward walked up her he and took her hand.
“My lady.” he whispered brushing his lips across her fingers. Alyssa blushed as the prince embraced her.
“Your highness.” she cooed tenderly.  Edward turned to her lips and brushed them gently.  He gazed into her blue eyes, and lifting her chin, kissed her passionately.  Edward lost himself in her embrace; he did not care who saw them.  Alyssa clung to him trembling she had missed his kiss, missed the feel of his arms around her.   Little Anders looked up at them and tugged on Edwards’s tunic.
“Will you be my new father someday?”
Alyssa and Edward looked down at Anders and then at each other.  Tears rose in Alyssa's eyes, she smiled, wiping them away.  Edward took a breath and knelt down to Anders.
“Would you like that?”
“Yes, the seven year old stated, please marry my mummy”
Alyssa bit her lip, she had been sixteen when she wed Lord Peters, and he had not been interested in her, as he was more inclined to gambling and wenching.  When they moved from their manor to the royal castle Alyssa met Prince Edward, the youngest of King Steven’s sons.  He was kind and handsome with an outgoing personality.  He was different then other royals and lords she had ever met.  The next two years were spent innocently together, but in that time they found themselves in love with each other and that love grew.  One evening Lord Peters was found dead. He had been murdered for his extensive gambling debts.  Edward wasted no time and asked Alyssa for her hand.  She accepted him and that night Edward took her as his own. He found her to still be a maiden but he was not surprised, he knew Peters had no interest in Alyssa save her holdings of which he was squandering away at the card table. Alyssa willing gave herself to Edward, and his tender passion. There love no neither bounds, nor precautions.  Alyssa father, Lord Sarson, upon hearing of their engagement, forbade it and would not sign their betroval papers.  He did not trust Edward, as he believed that the prince had Lord Peter’s murdered.  The couple was heart broken, but Edward persisted and lobbied for Alyssa to stay at the royal castle, as her father wanted her to be sent to a convent.  King Steven was not unaware of their goings on, and thought that the allegations on his son were slanderous as the real murderer, a moneylender, was found and hung. Hence the king allowed Alyssa to stay at the royal court under his protection which further infuriated lord Sarson.  Edward was relieved that his father had allowed Alyssa to stay, as she was now pregnant with his child. He would see her in secret and comfort her. She promised that when her time came she would send him a message.  The night that call came Edward paced his room, he wanted to be with Alyssa in her time of need but to do so openly would destroy Alyssa’s reputation and brand his son a bastard.  Jonathan kept him informed on how she was faring, as it was a long night. As the dawn slowly lit up the sky Jonathan came back with the message that she was safely delivered of a son, Edward sank to his knees and thanked god. He prayed that one day he could call this child his own.  Later, when all had settled down, he climbed down to Alyssa’s chamber window. Peeking in, he beheld a sight that warmed his heart. Alyssa was sitting up in her bed, nursing the little babe at her breast.  Upon seeing Edward she dismissed the servants.  Once alone, the prince embraced his little family.
“My son” he whispered as he stoked the infant’s tiny hand.
“Yes, he has your green eyes and no doubt your red hair” Alyssa cooed softy.
Composing himself Edward took a breath.
“Are you all right Alyssa?  I am sorry for the pain I have caused you to endure.”  Alyssa just smiled at him, their son fussed and turned his eyes to them.
“All the pain in the world was worth this beautiful child, thank you Edward”
The prince gazed at the child.  Only a few hours old yet the child had his expression, his eyes.
“My lady, I love you and I want to wed you…” Alyssa looked away.
“Yes but…he will not allow us…”
“Alyssa, you father cannot stop me from loving you and our child”.
 She turned to him.
“Nor can he stop me, my Lord”
“No one can” Edward breathed and kissed her softy on the lips.  Alyssa slowly lifted the babe into his father arms.  The prince held his son close to his heart.
“My son, I accept you as mine, he whispered…Prince Anders Carl Thernhard. We will be a family one day.  He looked up at Alyssa. “I swear it”
Edward composed himself and smiled.
“Come, you wanted to see Kira. I believe I saw her up on the ramparts.”  Jonathan opened the window as Edward fitted a large leather glove on the little boy’s hand.
“Now hold you hand up high”
Edward whistled three short toots.  Down from the sky swooped a majestic blue falcon, she flew into the window and landed on Anders’s gloved hand.
The boy smiled at Edward and looked at the bird with stars in eyes.
“Kira.” he said as he watched her beautiful golden eyes.  The peregrine falcon looked around the room, and seeing Alyssa, flew over to her.

Chapter 1.....

Putting up her arm the bird landed delicately on her wrist.
“Hello Kira.” Alyssa smiled and stroked the white feathers on the birds’ neck.
“She has always been attached to you” Edward said.  He marveled at how the bird was careful not to scratch her wrist with it talons.
“Aww mum, I wanted to hold her!”  Anders whined.  Alyssa looked at Kira.
“Go to him” she whispered.  The bird turned and flew to Anders.  She watched as Edward showed Anders how to hold Kira and fasten and unfasten her tethers.  Then he had him feed her a tidbit of rabbit meat.  Edward showed all the love and attention of a good father, it warmed Alyssa heart to watch them together.  She had made sure Anders had good contact with Edward.  For the last six years the prince had always been there for her and their son.  The boy was still deemed as Lord Peters, something King Steven reinforced for their safety.  But now as she watched them, their resemblance to each other was unmistakably that of father and son.  Anders turned and smiled at her, his green eyes shined over his freckled cheeks.  Edward mussed his red hair.
“There, now you little more about falconry” Kira peeped and unfolding her blue bared wings, flew off threw the window.
“Thank you” Anders looked up at Edward with affection.
“Soon I will teach you how to weld a sword”
“Can I become a knight? Anders gushed.
If you practice and follow the Code you can be anything you want my…” Edward stopped and kneeling scooped the boy up into his arms. My son one day I promise you will be so much more then a knight and then you will have the father you want. I swear on my life…Placing the child down Edward turned to Alyssa.
“Would my lady care for a ride on this fine morning? Jonathan will look after Anders for us.”
Alyssa bit her lip; it had been so long since she was able to be alone with Edward.  The prince walked up to her and took her hand; love and longing warmed his green eyes that still held his question to her heart.  To be with him as we should as man and women held by no bonds only love.
“Aye my lord.” she whispered looking away.  Edward tightened his grip on her hand.
He turned to his aide.
“Jonathan…?”
The young man was entertaining Anders with a magic trick.
“Aye my lord I will care for him, not to worry.”  Jonathan had long since known of his prince’s plight.  He too thought it was unfair that Edward could not marry Alyssa.  He pledge himself to helping them as best he could. Jonathan did not think badly of Edward, rather he admired his lord for his strong devotion to his family.  At times, he would find the prince alone in his room, his heart full of sorrow and his head drunk on wine.  He would tell Jonathan of his pain of being separated from his Lady and son.  Jonathan would comfort him with the thought that there was always a chance that Alyssa's father would allow their marriage.  Every year Edward would go to Lord Sarsen and plead with him to wed Alyssa.  But each time the answer was no.
Alyssa went to Anders and kissed him on his forehead.
“Mummy is going out for a while, be a good boy for Master Jonathan.”
“I will.” Anders said and reached up his arms to her.  Alyssa lifted him up into her arms and held him close.  She sighed softy as she felt the warmth of Edwards’s arms around them.  Jonathan watched them from the window and then turned and looked out onto the ramparts.  He knew that night his lord would be deep into his cups trying to drown his sorrow.

Chapter 1.....

Setting off from the castle on separate horses, they rode across the countryside.  The spring air filled their lungs and rose their desire for each other.  Edward looked over at Alyssa, his gaze told her more then any words could.  They were free if only for that afternoon.  They reined in their horses sharply and Alyssa slide from her mount and climbed into the saddle before Edward.  He embraced her tight and spurred his horse hard.  Desperately he muttered passionate words into her ear as they arrived at there trysting spot.  It was a small grove of chestnut trees, safe and hidden from the road.  A little brook bubbled over an outcrop of rock on the woodland hill.  Goliath, Edwards Friesian stallion, tossed his head as they slide from his back and into each other’s arms.  They held each other silently drinking in the ones of their embrace.
“Alyssa.” Edward’s deep voice droned in her ear, his warm breath sent anticipation threw her heart.
Alyssa looked up at him and traced her finger over his freckled cheek. His thick eyebrows lowered as he drew in his breath and trembled.
“Oh, I have so missed your touch.”  He whispered.
Tenderly she ran her finger over his mouth.  Edward gently caught her finger between his soft lips.  Alyssa trembled with desire.
“And I have missed you, my man.”
Slowly she pulled her hand away and watched his green eyes brighten.  Taking her hand Edward led her under the chestnut trees and kneeling untied the bow on her stays as Alyssa ran her hand over his belts. Slowly they undressed each other; piece by piece there garments fell around them.  Edward trembled as he beheld his lady; his large hands caressed her soft skin gently as Alyssa ran her hands down his shoulders pushing back his long hair.  They looked into each other eyes, these were the moments they lived for and they savored this time.

Chapter 2

King Steven sat with his son, Prince Michael, in his royal chambers.  They where going over matters of state as Michael had just been made Duke of Storuman County to the north.
“They are a remote township my son but, I trust you will make a good impression on them.” The king smiled, signing his daily documents.
“Of course father, however, I shall be away for sometime.   Something tells me I should not go so soon.” His violet eyes gave away his fears.  Steven studied him.
“What is it Michael?”
“I don’t know, he sighed and looked at his hands, I have a bad feeling…” Steven squared his jaw, his second to youngest son was known for his intuitions.  They say it is because he is an albino that he has this foresight. Steven put his hand on his son’s shoulder.
“Do not worry, nothing will happened, and if it does, we will be ready.” They turned as Queen Gwen walked into the room; she had brought them some food.
“Lunchtime already?” Steven smiled putting down his quill.
Gwen laughed, “You boys have been so busy, I knew you needed a break.” She put down the platter and looked at them. “Pray have any of you seen Edward today?” Steven looked to he window.
“Nay, but I did see his falcon fly by not to long ago.”
Michael looked at is parents, they know where he is, we all do.  Perhaps these premonitions I feel will help my brother somehow, because it seem no one else can. He shot a look at his father, or will.

Edward and Alyssa rested in each other’s arms.
Alyssa ran her fingers through deep red curls on his strong chest, she did not want to leave his embrace; she looked at his strong freckled arms and at the tattoo he wore.  Prince or commoner, she did not care for this moment he was the husband she longed for.  No inhibitions, no hiding or acting as if they did not love each other, only bliss. She passed her finger over the cleft in his chin, our son has a cleft as well, it was only a little dimple now, but as he grew it would be deep like his father’s she pondered.  She looked up into his green eyes and saw tears in his gaze.  Alyssa knew, as always, that they had to part soon.  Edward took her hand and brought her fingers to his lips.  Slowly they rose and held each other.  Edward leaned down and putting his forehead to hers ran his hand through her soft brown hair.
“Alyssa you must hate me, he said weakly, you don’t deserve this torture.”
“Edward… I love you, I could never hate the man of my heart and father of child.” Edward trembled at her words, but for how long will she endure?
As they dressed Alyssa sat and tied her stays; at her feet were Edward’s belts, she picked them up.  The prince had a long dagger given to him by his nephew, Prince Gustaf.  She looked at the scabbard, it was new, and there was a relief of a lady holding a falcon.  It was an image of herself!  She walked up to the prince and drew his belts around his waist.  Edward smiled as he watched chinched them tight.  She held the dagger and looked at it. Edward smiled and took it from her hand.
“I had it made in honor of you and Kira, the two ladies I love.”
Goliath walked over to them and nickered softy.
“Even he knows it’s time to go.” Alyssa whispered.  Edward grimaced and looked away; composing himself he turned to her and held out his hand.
“My lady…” his voice shook as she took his hand.  Silently they mounted the horse and road off toward home.  They stopped were Alyssa had left her mare.  As she turned to slip off Goliath, Edward held her fast to his chest
“Nay…do not leave my embrace.” he sighed deeply.
Alyssa’s heart hurt, she wanted to say with him, to never have to part with man she loved.  Each time it became harder to leave his warm embrace, but she gripped her nerve and swallowed her tears.
“Courage my love…”

Chapter 2....

The sound of approaching hoof beats sent them into a panic.  Alyssa slid off Goliath and sprinting to her mare mounted her.   She looked back at Edward as she spurred the horse forward.  Edward tugged back on the reins as Goliath lurched forward in pursuit of Alyssa, causing the horse to rear up high.  As Alyssa galloped off out of sight he turned in misery to see who was coming up behind him.  Lord Sarson accompanied by a knight, trotted up to Edward and slowed to a stop.
“Your highness.” he said and bowed his head.
“Lord Sarson.” Edward said between clenched teeth.  If they had caught all would have been lost.  His beloved Alyssa would be put in a convent and his son would be sent to Sarson’s manor to brought up by him.
“Pray, are you out hunting as I saw your bird not to long ago?”
Edward looked up to see Kira sailing on an up draft.  She turned and tucking her wings shot down from the sky.  As she touched down in a field her claws clasped a rabbit in mid leap.
“Ah, she has got one!” Sarson smiled.  The old man sat back in the saddle and glanced at Edward, a look of self-righteousness filled his expression.  “I am going to the castle to see my grandson, I have brought him a gift, he patted the short sword at his side, I mean for Sir Carl here to teach him swordplay”.
The knight nodded to the prince.  Edwards ears burned with anger, he wanted to teacher his son all he needed to know, not this callus and vengeful man’s lackey.  Edward felt the tip of his sword with his foot; the weapon was mounted next to the saddle, as it was too large to wear.  He was given the legendary Drake bane from his father; the six-foot blade seemed to call to him.  He wanted to draw it and end his and Alyssa suffering once and for all.  But he knew this was not the way. Gathering his thoughts he tugged on a glove and whistled for Kira.  The falcon was still consuming her catch and looked up to his call.  Taking to the air she flew up to Edward and landed on his wrist.
“Good day lord Sarson” he said and spurred Goliath into a trot. As he traveled down the road he looked back to see Sarson heading toward the castle.   Spurring his horse hard, Edward tossed Kira forward.  She leapt from his hand and spreading her wings, took to the air.  As they road he urged Goliath faster, his heart felt like a million knives were carving at it at once.  The road became a blur as they raced on; he could hear Kira’s cries high about him. He took the long way around the forest back to the castle trail.  Goliath was at top speed as they reached the castle.  The prince reined him in and rode him to the stables. A Stewart took the sweat soaked stallion from Edward as he detached his sword form the saddle.  In the castles main hall he saw Jonathan.  He strode up to him with Drake bane on his shoulder, his eyes set.
“Where is my son?” he growled in the boy’s ear.
Jonathan set his jaw and adverted his gaze to the stone floor.
“He is in the solar with his mother and grandfather”.
Edward eyes narrowed.
“ I thought as much”.

Chapter 2...

Alyssa sat in the solar with her father and little Anders. She had just made it home when he arrived and changed her dress from the soft white frock to a more demure brown kirtle with a veil to hide her hair.  She watched him play with her son.  He was his grandfather but still, what grandfather would deny his grandchild a father?  He still believed Edward had Peters murdered.  Still it was known he had no love for King Steven and the King did not favor Sarson either, he merely tolerated him.
“So my boy what have you been doing today?”  Sarson asked the lad.
Anders looked up from his new sword.
“ I saw Kira and I got to hold her and feed her” He pulled out a feather from his belt and twirled it in his fingers.  Sarson shot a look at Alyssa.
“That is something we must talk about” He sent the servants from the room.  “Sir Carl, take Anders out to the field and practice with him”.
“Yes my Lord.”
Carl reached for the little boy’s hand, Anders pulled away from him and taking his sword walked out the door with the knight behind him. Alyssa knew what her father was going to say.  He would condemn Edward and tell her he was a tyrant.  She did not know if she could bear to hear his laments.  She could still smell Edward’s scent on her body and feel his hands in her hair.
“I saw Prince Edward with his bird on my way here today…”
“Father I see no harm in him teaching Anders about falconry.  My son is very smart and wants to learn…
“Alyssa you forget he had the father of your child murdered, he is not to be trusted!”  Damn and blast will you not see sense!”  Alyssa’s heart trembled and she clenched her fists.
“I tire of this argument father! When will you learn that Edward is not a tyrant but a good man?”
Taken aback Sarson looked at his daughter.
“If it weren’t for King Steven’s decree you, my dear, would not be here! The old man sighed.  I worry for you safety, I am sorry to cause you pain.”
His words bit at her heart, he knew what pain he was inflecting on her but his pride stood in the way.  He did not want his daughter marrying into the royal family.

Chapter 2...

Outside in the practice area Anders swung his new sword as Sir Carl instructed him in the late afternoon light.  High in the air Kira floated silently on the breeze, she arched right and flew up to an open window in the castle turret.  Edward stood in the window; he leaned on his arm as he watched his son in the field below. He drained off his chalice of wine and looked at Kira as she stood on the stone window still, she peeped and ruffled her feathers.
“My lady, he address the bird, how long must Alyssa and I endure this pain?”  He turned from the window and dashed his chalice hard against the wall.  “Damn you Sarson, damn you!”

Jonathan entered Edwards chamber later that evening.  The room was in a state of disarray.   He noticed his lord’s armor was gone and so was his sword and shield.  Rushing from the room he went down to the stables, Goliath was not in his stall.  The Stewart told him the prince was drunk and mumbled something about the witch of Gotland.  The young man held a bloody bandaged to his head; no doubt he had made the mistake of getting in the princes way.  Jonathan tried to think who would know of the witch?  Family lore had stated that prince Michael had met with the sorceress long ago.  He went back to the castle and found Prince Michael in the library.
“My prince” he bowed catching his breath.  Michael was at a desk reading when the young aid rushed into the room he looked up and eyed him.
“What has happened?”
“Your highness, Prince Edward has gone to find the witch of Gotland, he is well into his cups and dare I say dangerous.” Michael stood and controlled his panic.
“We must find him.” he called to his squire who was sitting at door. Carl, get my horse ready!   Come Jonathan we will find him” And he thought, I hope we are not too late.

Chapter 2....

Up on the North road Edward pulled the reins tighter and scanned the dark landscape. His eyesight and judgment impaired with drink and sorrow.
“Which way?” he growled to himself. Goliath chewed his bit and tossed his head as Edward wheeled him around. The sun was almost set and wind blew thought the trees as darkness began to settle on him.  He was not sure were the witch’s lair was but he knew he had to see her.  She could put an end to his torment.  He was after all a man, but he felt less of one without his lady and child.  Edward heard someone coming down the road, his anger mounted and he drew his sword. The other rider pulled up to him sharply and drew back his hood,it was Prince Micheal.
“Edward, why are you out here?”  The prince lowered his sword and looked away.
“Brother I…I wanted to find the witch, perhaps she can…”
“Nay, you are in no state to see her” Michael stated calmly.  Edward looked over his brother’s shoulder, Jonathan was with him. The worry on his aids face sobered him some.
Michael took hold of Goliath’s bridle.
“Come, let us go back home” Edward sat silently in his defeat, he rested his hands on Drake Bane as his tears fell quietly.  Michael had always adored his little brother; they had a very strong bond more then even the twins Anna and George had.  It hurt Michael to see Edward in pain, denied of his family and his right.  He looked back at Edward; my brother is a shadow of a man.  Perhaps the witch can help him, but for now I must get him back home.

Chapter 2...

In her chamber Alyssa sat on her bed and watched her son sleep.  How peaceful he looked, his day was very full and he was no trouble to put down tonight.  Soon he would be old enough for his own bed.  Alyssa turned to see Ing’Marie standing before her with a chalice of wine. The old women had been her lady in waiting since she was small, and she knew as Alyssa did what her lady now had to do.  Alyssa took the chalice and gazed into it, reaching into a box on her nightstand she took out a small blue vile.  As she added it contents drop by drop to the wine she wondered how more times must she drink this foul brew?  The tincture had been given to her from the midwife who delivered Anders.  Her instructions were simple; three drops into a chalice of wine after the act of love will end any chance of conceiving.  Placing the vile down she brought the chalice to her lips; tears filled her eyes as she drank.  Edward, she thought, I so want to give you more children but for now I know we must wait.  Finishing her cup she looked up at Ing’Marie through her tears.  The old women sat next to her and put her arm around her.
“Now, now my lamb, do not cry” Alyssa turned, the chalice tumbled to the floor as she sobbed into the old women’s shoulder.

Chapter 3

Slowly Edward stirred the light from the window stabbed at his eyes painfully.  Groaning he put his hand over his face.
“How much did I drink?”
“Quite a lot my lord” Jonathan answer quietly.  Squinting Edward sat up holding his head.
“Does my lady know what happened last night?”
“No, she does not know that you got drunk, almost killed a Stewart and when riding out into the night.”
“My god, the prince rubbed his face, I am sorry Jonathan.  Will the Stewart be alright?”
“Well he sure did get his ear boxed pretty hard. I will get you some breakfast my lord.”  Jonathan turned and left the room. Edward sat on the side of the bed, his head was pounding and his mouth was dry.  He looked over at his armor and sword, he wondered how in his state last night did he get his armor on, it all seem a blur now and he felt like a fool.  He had wanted to see the witch and ask her help.  Seeing Sarson did not help his mood.  The worst would be Alyssa to see him in one of his drunken rages.  Grabbing a shirt he dressed himself.  Looking in the mirror he fought back the rising gorge in his throat, perhaps I should skip breakfast he thought.  He walked over to the window and opened it.  Below he could see lord Sarson riding off with his knight.
“Good riddance” he growled to himself.   The warm morning breeze made his head feel a little clearer and he stood and took a deep breath.  Jonathan came in with his breakfast.  Edward looked at it and grimaced.
“Perhaps the coffee my lord?”  Edward took the cup and sat down at his desk.  He went into pigeonholes and pulled out his maps.  He knew that one of them pointed out the area of the witches’ lair, his traced his finger along the north road till it came to the junction of castle rock.  There was drawn an odd symbol in red.
“You will not find her there…” a voice said from behind him.  Edward turned to see his brother Michael.
“Good morrow” Edward said holding his head.
“Good morrow brother” Michael took off his sword and pulling up a chair sat next to him.  Edward reached for his coffee; the bitter liquid was the time-tested cure for a hang over but he thought it would serve a better use as metal polish. Michael turned his violet eyes to Edward.
“To find the witch you must first want to find her” The younger prince frowned and put down his cup.
“Of course I want to find her Michael, you know more then anyone why I need her consult.”
“This I know Edward, but remember it is a dangerous affair, her advise is sound however beware her price.”  Michael mind went back nine years ago when he went to seek the witch, she had helped him with his quest, however, and he was nearly killed by her hellhounds he still bore the scars on his shoulder from there attack.  Edward looked away to the window.
“I will pay her price brother, even if it is in blood” Michael sighed deeply his brothers pain would never be comforted, he had to help him.  Reaching into his cloak he pulled out an old tattered map and handed it to him.
“This is the true map to the witches lair, be careful and keep alert.” Edward took the map and put his hand on his brother shoulder.
“My family thanks you brother” Michael’s stomach turned, what was he doing?  On one had he was helping his brother find peace, on the other he could be signing his death warrant.

Alyssa sat in her rooms working at her embroidery.  Anders was in school for the afternoon and she filled this quite time with her stitchery.  An accomplished embroider and dressmaker she worked on the five-foot tapestry with skillful fingers.  It was a commission from the king for the throne room; it was picture depicting the royal crest in a shield surrounded by all the names of the royal family.  Under each princes name was the name of there children.  Alyssa looked at the empty space under Edwards’s name.  She knew one day she would place Anders name there and perhaps her own with his, but for now it remained blank.  A knock at the door woke her from her thoughts.  It was Ing’Marie; she handed her a message.  Alyssa read it and grabbing her skirts ran out the door and down to the stables.  The message was from Edward. He wanted to meet her at Goliath’s stall. His shaky handwriting set her nerves racing.  Once in the stables she made her way to the stall.  Goliath swung his large head over the door and nickered softly.  The horse was dressed in battle armor; the golden plate’s extended from his nose down his long neck. Taking a breath she open the stall door and gasped, Edward turned to her as he adjusted the saddle.  He was clad in golden bronze armor of exquisite detail; his breastplate was fitted with the coat of arms of Gotland on a black field.  She had never seen him in his armor before, the sight took her breath away and yet it freighted her.
“Edward, I got your message, where are you going?”
“Alyssa, I believe I have found an answer to our problems. I am going to see the Witch of Gotland, her council is wise perhaps…”
Alyssa eyes flashed with panic.
“Nay, Edward please…”
“I know it is dangerous but I am prepared to kill what ever beast she tests me with”. Gently he embraced her and looked down into her eyes. “I would do anything to secure our happiness”.
“I believe you my lord, pray take care. Anders and I cannot live without you” Edward pulled her closer.
“Nor could I live without you both, and that is why I must go” he sighed deeply into her ear.  Wiping her tears Alyssa backed away as Edward swung into the saddle and donned his helm.  He turned to her and gripped her hand.
“I will return to you”
As Edward rode out of the stables and onto the green Alyssa sent out a pray that he would be safe and return to her and there son.

Anders was finished with his studies for the day and taking his pony he and Jonathan road back to the castle.  His teacher, brother Svenson, had said he was doing well and that would soon be quite accomplished at his Latin.  His seventh birthday was almost upon him.  At that time he would put in for a squireship. There were a few knights who had shown and interest in him.  His grandfather was now having him trained regularly by Sir Carl.  Anders traveled the south road to the castle. On his left, in-between a strip of forest, was the north road that went to the countryside.  He glanced over and pulled his pony to a stop.  Jonathan wheeled his horse around to see what had distracted the boy. Coming down the south road was a knight on a large black horse, his armor shined in the afternoon light; the crest of the royal family blazed boldly on his chest.  Upon his head was an incredible helm: the visor was the beak of an eagle, long wings arched up high from the sides of this golden masterpiece.  Anders stared as the knight road by, the horse was covered in battle armor that matched the knights golden suit. It’s big hoofs guided in gold stepped proudly.  Strapped to the saddle was a massive sword.  It was Edward!  Anders had always admired Prince Edward, they looked alike in a way and the young boy would sometime wish he were his father.  But now to see him as knight enthralled the young lad.  The cry of the falcon caused Anders to look up, Kira swooped down and landed on Edwards outstretched arm.
“Come lad” Jonathan beckoned him.  Still looking back Anders nudged his pony forward.
“That was …was Prince Edward” the child gasped.  “I have seen all of the kings knights but none truly looked as magnificent as he!"

Chapter 3...

Edward looked through the side of his visor.  He had seen Anders and Jonathan watching him, he looked at Kira, she turned her blue head sideways as if asking him a question. Pulling Goliath to a stop he turned to her.
“Yes my lady falcon, that was my son.  No doubt he wonders why I am out here.” Gently he stoked the feathers on her neck. Raising his armored hand Kira spread her wings and flew off into the sky.  Edward proceeded on down the road. His heart was heavy, as he had not been able to say goodbye to his child.  But from the look on the boy’s face he could tell that he admired him even more so now.  He remembered how much pride he felt when he was with Anders, the pride of a father. He looked up ahead, he was coming to the junction marked on the map by St. Johan’s cross. There he would turn off into the Lone Forest. I do this for you Alyssa my Princess, my love and my life and for you my son. The strength of your love will help me prevail over whatever awaits me.

Alyssa sat in her window seat of her bedchamber and wrung her hands nervously.   Edward had gone to see the witch, untold dangers lied before him and she felt helpless and afraid.  Edward meant more then the world to her she, smiled as she remember when they first met.
She had only been at Visborg castle for a week. She and Ing’Marie where in the middle of getting her rooms ready.  Her and Peters manor house was being renovated and the king graciously extended rooms to them in the castle.  Alyssa was a bit overwhelmed; her manor was not as large as the royal castle.  She went to call for a Stewart to help her and Ing’Marie with some heavy furniture when she found herself lost in the castle winding hallways.  After what seems like hours, she found herself in a large gallery.  Every weapon imaginable hung on the walls, in the center stood a young man holding an axe before him. Ginger eyebrows loomed over his closed eyes. Long fiery red hair graced his head and fell beyond his broad shoulders; a strong cleft chin squared off his handsome face. Stripped to the waist his muscles gleamed in the light. She noticed a tattoo on his large bicep.  A patch of red hair curled softy across his broad chest.  Entranced, Alyssa stepped forward. She could see patterns of freckles extend from his face down his neck and across his arms. Suddenly the man whirled and propelled the weapon at a target behind him; it hit dead center.  Alyssa looked at the target then at the young man, his eyes where still shut.  She had never seen such an amazing feat.  A blush ran up her face as she looked at is strong physic, he was not overly tall like most Gotlanders, but well proportioned.  Alyssa felt her burning cheeks; she was staring at this stranger.  Edward raised his head and inhaled deeply, he turned and opening his eyes looked upon her.  He could smell her sweet scent from across the room, but he had no idea the beauty he would behold. She was a delicate creature, with soft blue eyes fringed by the longest lashes he had ever seen. Shyly, she looked at him; her finger thoughtlessly played with a lock her golden brown hair.  A maiden he thought, for sure she must be for the delicate blush on her face gives her away.  But pray who is this lovely creature?  Picking up his shirt he walked up to her.
“My lady, does my sport amuse you?”  Alyssa looked into his gaze and looked away, his green eyes seemed to look into her soul.
“Aye, as I have never seen such skill.” She gave him a quick look to find his eyes still on her.  Edward took her hand slowly into his.
“I am Edward.” he said and bestowed a kiss on her hand that made her tremble.  Never had she felt such tender lips.  She looked up at him and bit her lip.
“Prince… Edward?”
The young man smiled.
“Aye, I do look much like my father, the king.” his voice was deep lull that warmed her heart.
“Aye you do.”
She is lovely indeed Edward thought.  But I must know the name of this sweet bird.
“Alyssa!” a voice called from behind them.  She turned to see Ing’Marie coming down the hall with a Stewart.
“Farewell your highness.” she curtsied. Edward brushed his lips across her hand.
“Farewell lovely bird.”
From that moment on Alyssa’s heart was lost to Edward, so much had happened since their first meeting eight years ago.  She turned to see Anders come into the chamber.
“How was you classes my dear?”  Anders kissed his mother cheek, his eyes shined with excitement.
“Mum, I saw Edward on my way home, he wore the most incredible armor, I have never seen such a knight! One day I shall a knight mother, Edward will be proud of me I promise’.
Tears escaped Alyssa’s eyes as she embraced her son. He sounds so much like his father and his heart is open and innocent to the world.  I wish he could understand and know that Edward is his real father, but for know let him remain his friend.
“He will be so very proud my Anders, so very proud.”

Chapter 4

Edward pasted St. Johan’s cross, the stone monument stood silently as he rode past.  He recalled the story of how Father had proposed to mother on that very spot.  But now the lone marker reminded him of a gravestone in a lone cemetery long neglected.  A feeling of cold and despair pierced his thoughts.  Up head was the road that led to the Lone Forest.  Gripping his nerve he spurred Goliath faster.  As they rounded the turn off the air grew heavy and damp.  He could feel Goliath tremble under him, the forest became darker, and he heard no birds or other signs of life as he went along.  He slowed his horse to stop and pulled out the map.  It was here that he was to enter the forest.  Goliath sidestepped nervously. Edward got him under control and turned him off the road into the dark wood.

Michael sat in his study; grief crossed his face.  He had given his little brother the map and now he was off on his Quest to see the witch.  Still he pondered perhaps she does not exist anymore.  He had postponed his trip to Storuman County; he was too worried about Edward.  He recalled the times when Edward was a child.  Michael was ten years older then Edward, when his mother the Queen was pregnant he had hoped for a little brother and was excited when his father brought him into the room shortly after Edwards birth.  Edward was four when Michael wed his wife Vella and was so thrilled to be his best man.  As the years went by they shared many good times together.  Michael taught Edward swordsmanship and how to ride a horse.  His nephew, Gustaf, taught him the art of knife throwing, few people in the family were able to befriend Gustaf, a dark and brooding sort. But Edward gained his respect.  King Steven noticed the bond between Edward and Michael and over the years watched it grow.  Thought he himself wished he was closer to the boy, at times Edward and his father did not always see eye to eye.  Edward knew he would never be King of Gotland, nor did he desire it.  Rather he found his solace in nature and her animals. Edward wanted to be a forest ranger and live in the wild, he had found Kira as a chick and raised her himself.  King Steven forbade him from taking this post as he was still a prince and could do much good for their people.  Edward thought not but begrudgingly obeyed his fathers wish.  As time went on bouts of depression plagued him and his drinking became worst.  The only thing that brought happiness to his heart was Alyssa and now there son Anders.  Michael bowed his head.
“My lord god be with my brother this day.  May his heart be brave and his sword strike true.”

Chapter 4....

The dank landscape of the lone forest sprawled out before Edward like a plague.  Twisted gnarled trees devoid of leaf jutted out of the ground.  No soil, only dust and rock met his horse hooves.  Walking his horse forward a low-lying mist hovered above the ground making it impossible for him to see the terrain.  The sharp screech of an owl sent Goliath on his hind legs.  Trembling Edward controlled the frightened horse.
“Easy big boy, it was only a bird…” He rubbed the horse neck and looked around, he gripped the hilt of Drake bane and caught his breath.  Michael has done this before…. I can do it.  He closed his eyes and saw his family: Alyssa so beautiful, Anders an image of himself. Letting out his breath he looked ahead and set his eyes.
“Come Goliath, there something we must do.” The stallion picked his way slowly through the mist, his hooves unsure of the ground.  Edward raised he visor, up in the dark clouds he saw Kira floating on an up draft.  The bird was very loyal to him but did not want her getting hurt. The prince eyed the ethereal terrain around him; he had never seen such a desolate or twisted landscape.  It was like the very earth itself was in pain.  Every childhood fear came back to haunt him as they approached the dark entrance to the witches cave.  Edward tried to shake the feeling off but his fear turned to the time when he was only a child.  In Visborg castle there was a long unused dungeon complete with torture room.  His father never saw a reason to use such a place and hence it was locked up.  One day he was playing hide and seek with some of the children who lived in the castle, one of them Jeremy, the stable masters son had found the key to the dungeon and wanted to play a prank on Edward.  He lured the young prince into the dungeon and locked him in.  For six harrowing hours Edward faced his worst fears in that room.  Michael who personally punished little Jeremy with a good hiding found Edward cowering in the darkness.  Now that same darkness loomed before him. A cold sweat covers his face as he dismounted Goliath.  Reaching over the saddle he drew his sword and turned to the cave.  His stomach lurched as he eyed the darkness, place the sword over his shoulder he stepped into the cave.

Chapter 4...

Stealing himself in the darkness the prince came to a small area carved in the rock.  A fire at the back wall lighted the room.  Looking around he his heart filled with apprehension, skulls, bones and other odd and horrid objects hung on the walls.  A large wooden table stood alone in the middle of the area and was covered in a wild assortment of stones and crystals.  As Edward looked around the most delicate scent drifted through the air, it was like roses and jasmine.  It reminded him of Alyssa’s perfume.  Edward turned to the fire to see a figure crouched before it, she was throwing flower petals into the flames.  Taking a breath he squared his shoulders and turned to her.
“My Lady I…” his voice stammered.  Embarrassed he stepped back; his voice reminded him of when he was a boy scared and alone in the dark.  The figure rose and turned to him; Edward stood his ground as the witched approached.  She was cloaked in dark purple robes; her eyes were that of a cat, her face young and beautiful.  She smiled and curtsied Entranced Edward watched as her long black hair fell over her shoulders and to the ground.
“Welcome to my home, my Prince.” she purred.  Her voice was mesmerizing, Edward cleared his throat and looked at his hands, they were shaking.
“What is it you want of me your highness?” she whispered in his ear.  Edward jumped, she had been a few feet in front of him but now she had her lips to his ear.  “Oh do not fear Prince Edward, nothing can harm you…yet.”
Edward swallowed and gripped his nerve.
“My lady I am her for your council, as I am told it is wise…” The witch drew her fingers across his chest, Edward watched her long nails as they traced the stitches on his coat of arms, he shivered and turned his thoughts to his family.
“Ah yes, the witch smiled as she walked in front of him, you need my help to procure this.”  She drew an orb from her robe and held it up.  Edward looked into the ball and saw a vision of Alyssa and Anders they looked worried.
“Alyssa….”  Edward reached for the orb but the witch drew it away.
“Now, now patients my prince.”
“Patients!  Edward snapped, I have been patient too long!”  Edward looked down and tried to control his anger and fear. The witch put her hand on his shoulder and sighed.
“I have watched your pain youngest of princes and you have showed much strength, I commend your courage.”  Edward looked up at her; the tears in his eyes ran down his freckled checks.  He wiped them quickly and grid his teeth.
“All my strength and courage cannot give me my family!”
She showed him the orb.
“But it shall, a knight will come for Alyssa’s hand he will be wearing this symbol.”
Edward looked into the orb; he saw a coat of arms depicting a black dragon on a white field.
“I will defeat him, he growled, according to my fathers law the winner of such a match has the right to the lady they have fought for.” The vision faded and the witch disappeared.
“Edward, this knight is not what he seems” the prince stood alone in the witch’s cave.
“What do you mean?  He called to her. Suddenly the fire went out and he was plunged into darkness.

Chapter 4...

Edward turned, the doorway was right behind him he gripped the handle of his sword and made his way to the entrance.  The rattling of chains came to his ears and deep growl echoed through the hall.
“I am sorry young Thernhard, the witches voiced sounded, but all must pass my test”
Edward swore, he was blind in the dark.  His foe’s horse breathing was his only point of vantage.  The chains scraped along the floor toward him, nails clicked on the stone floor.  It’s a beast he thought a hellhound like my brother has fought.  As Edward leened around the corner the dim light of the outside illuminated his foe.  It was a giant gray wolf, it eyes were red and shined with hate.  Edward ducked back into the passageway and caught his breath.  This creature was a demon straight from hell, a living nightmare. Edward held his sword before him and looked at the blade.  A long dragon was etched deep into the steel, dragon slayer, which was the sword’s name.  I must kill this beast and then I shall kill that knight who wares the symbol of the dragon.  Edward turned the corner and the beast was gone!  The chains were broken and lied scattered around the ground.  Edward turned but it to late, the beast knocked him to the ground and jumped on him.  Edward looked up, its eyes stared at him as drool ran from its long fangs.  He knew if he broke the animals gaze or moved it would attack.  He had dropped his sword and it was out of reach.  However, he remembered the dagger on his leg.   Slowly he inched his fingers toward it.  The beast foul breath fills his lungs, it weight bear down on him.  He could feel his armor start to give; the creature was the size of a bear and just as heavy.  Finally he found the hilt of his dagger. Drawing his breath he pulled the knife quickly and jammed it in the beast’s side.  The wolf howled and grabbed Edward by the neck.  Quickly the prince stabbed the wolf again and drawing on his strength dragged the blade across its side.  The wolf jumped off him and bayed in pain.  Edward scrambled to get his sword, the beast had pieced the armor on his neck and he could feel his own blood begin to soak his under tunic.  The wolf turned and growled, blood ran from it mouth and it struggled to stay on its feet.  Edward stood before it and lowered his sword to its head.  The beast looked up at him and whimpered, the glow was gone from its eyes.
“You have been bested beast, trouble me no more” The wolf slowly laid down, it labored breath slowly shortened until it stopped.  The prince looked around; there were no more to challenge him.  Turning he left the cave and came out into the lone forest.  Goliath walked up to him and nuzzled his hand.  Edward saw blood dripping down his arm, the wound on his neck was more serious them he thought.   Kira flew down to him and landed on his shoulder. She sat there and picked at his blood stained tabard and tore a piece from it.  Edward looked at her.
“Take it to Jonathan, he will know what to do” The bird took to the air and Edward slowly he mounted Goliath and turned for home.

Chapter 5

The king and queen sat in the solar alone in the late afternoon light.  Queen Gwen rang her hands and glanced at her husband.
“I saw Edward leave the castle in his armor. Where could he be going?”  She knew King Steven had always had a difficult time with Edward, but she was worried. Rumors of him seeing the Witch of Gotland where running wild throughout the castle.  Steven took a deep breath.
“My son…is different, he is head strong and arrogant…”
“Steven please, put your differences aside. I fear something terrible has happened to him.”
The king loved his son, he knew of his plight but he wished that perhaps Edward would be more like himself.  It was a selfish thought and now seeing the panic in his wives eyes he realized how stubborn he had been all these years.
“Gwen I have been and old fool”
Turning to the door he called for a Stewart.
“Bring me Jonathan Ofloson”

Edward held tight to the saddle as he road.  The loss of blood was weakening him.  Goliath knew the way back to the castle he would get them there, he hoped.  He looked over at Drake Bane, the big sword swayed slowly to his horses gate. Once, long ago, Father gave me that sword. He thought I would be like him, the great Defender of Gotland.  But I became the great embarrassment.  I seduced a widow and gave her my bastard child. But what does he know?  If he did know how I loved my lady and our son surely he would have let us wed if only for appearances.  He himself wooed my mother while she was still wed or shall I say was in a “false marriage” as the old story goes.  All the great stories about King Stevens’s heroism, bah!  But does he know how my life has been a living hell not being able to be with my family?  Not being able to crown my sweet Alyssa princess, but to see her work with the servants.  And the gall of my father, making her do a family tapestry.  But most of all not being able to call Anders my son…

Jonathan went to the door of the solar and waited for the king to call him in.  He knew why he was there.  The rumors about the castle had gotten to royal ears.
“Enter. ” The king said upon seeing the young aid.  Jonathan walked in and bowed
“Your Majesties.” he said nervously.
“Where is Edward?” Gwen said in a state of panic. The young man looked at the Queen.
“It is true the prince has gone to see the Witch, I could not stopped him”
Steven raised an eyebrow.
“ Why did he go?”
“Love sire, for love”
“And is it for that love would he die?”
“Yes sire he would”
Jonathan looked up at the king and stood fast. The flutter of feathers called their attention to the window.  It was Kira.  Jonathan he raised his arm and she flew over.  In her beak was the shred of Edwards’s tabard.
“Oh god” Gwen whispered. Jonathan looked up, his eyes shined with hope.
“He is alive but he is wounded, I must go to him.”
“Yes, Steven stood up, and I’ll will come with you!”

Chapter 5...

The king and Jonathan found Edward a mile from the castle.  Quickly they got him to his room.  Michael and the castle surgeon greeted them there.  Alyssa stood in the doorway with tears in her eyes; she wanted to go to him.  Jonathan and Michael removed his armor as the surgeon bandaged Edwards wounds.  The King and Queen watched nervously.  Little Anders came up to Alyssa and pulled on her skirts.
“Mummy will Edward be alright?”  Alyssa scooped him up in her arms and held him tight. Anders saw his mother’s tears and kissed her cheek.
“Edward is a brave knight mum, I believe in him.
“I believe in him too”
“Mummy do you love him?”  Alyssa smiled through her tears.
“Yes Anders I do” Anders looked into her eyes, his expression was almost angelic.
“I think he loves you too”

King Steven stood with the surgeon.
“Olaf, will he survive?”
The old man was once a battlefield surgeon in the king’s army. Now he was his majesties personal doctor and surgeon.  He had seen many men die of similar wounds.  However, Edward was lucky, he only had a closed call.  Olaf wiped his blood stained hands on his apron and adjusted the bandage on the prince’s throat.
“Yes sire, but he has lost a lot of blood and should rest. The wounds have stopped bleeding and will mend.
“When will he wake?” Gwen said as she took her sons hand.
“The blood loss has weaken him considerably, give him time your majesty” Steven pull his hand on Gwen’s.
“Let us pray that our youngest will be well again.”
Alyssa watched as the family joined in prayer.  She too bowed her head. Little Anders repeated the words to prayer softy as he clung to his mothers shoulder.  All evening the family drifted in and out of his room.  Alyssa when to the main hall and got Anders his dinner.  As she sat there with him her heart hurt, she wanted to be with Edward. All the servants were talking in hushed whispers about the prince, how brave he was and one said he had heard the prince went on his quest for the love of a fair lady. Alyssa wondered how much they truly knew. As they finished up their meal Prince Michael came to them.
“My lady, Edward is asking for you.” Embarrassed Alyssa looked away.  Michael took her hand and leaned close to her
“My lady, I know of you and Edward” she gave him a frightened look.
“Do not worry I am on your side, all three of you”

On the way to Edwards room Alyssa stopped off at her chamber and changed her dress to a softy pretty pink frock. She took down her hair and powdered her face.  She had to look good for Edward, to raise his spirits.  Ing’Marie took Anders and got him ready for bed as Alyssa left her chamber.
“Good night my little lamb.” Alyssa called to him softy.
“Good night mummy, tell Edward I miss him.” Holding her tears she turned and joined Prince Michael in the hall.

Chapter 5

As they ascended the stairs to Edwards room in the North tower, Alyssa recalled the many times she had come to his chamber her heart full of joy and longing knowing he was there and anticipating his warm embrace.  She knew she must keep positive thoughts in her mind now.  The door opened and she stopped and gathered her strength.  She walked up to the bed and looked upon him.  His fair face was so pale his breathing horse.  She took his hand and slowly sat next to him on the bed.
“My love” she whispered.  Edward slowly opened his eyes and looked at her.
“Alyssa” his voice cracked.
“Yes Edward, I am here”
“I have missed you my princess” Tears welled up in his eyes as he glanced at her.  Fighting back her tears, Alyssa took a cloth and wiped his eyes and forehead.
“The witch…she has told me how…how we can be together…”
“Shhhh now my love, you need your rest”
Edward smiled weakly. Alyssa leaned over him and kissed his lips softy.
“I have missed you my beloved and so has your son.” Looking into each other’s eyes Edward reached up and putting his arm around her held her to him.  Michael and Jonathan watched them from across the room.
“My brother has done it, he survived the witch’s test and I thank god for that” Jonathan handed him a chalice of wine.
“Quite right your highness and that is the love that compelled him. The beast he fought must have been quite large, Olaf said the bite makes resembled a wolf.
“Wolf, Michael looked into his chalice, they were hellhounds that I fought; no matter I assume the test is different for everyone.  The thing is my brother survived and I trust the witch’s advice was sound.”  The door to the chamber opened quietly, they turned to see little Anders sneak into the room.  He went over to the bed and climbed up onto it.
“Edward?” the little boy whispered. Alyssa and the prince looked at him and smiled.  Edward drew his son close to them.
“I saw you in the forest before, I have never seen such a sight.  I want to be a knight just like you” Edward smiled.
“Then my son…you must take a few wounds as well”. Anders eyes widened and then he smiled broadly. He is my father he thought. I knew it! I have always wanted it to be true.  Alyssa turned to her son.
“Keep what you have heard in your heart my son, tell no one” Anders knew by the worried look on his mothers face that he had to keep his new knowledge a secret, still his heart overflowed with joy.  Prince Edward was his father after all, not some dead tyrant. Anders looked over at the prince; the same green eyes met his.
“Father?”  Edward smiled and his heart glowed, tears slid down his face as he nodded to his son.
“Yes my boy?”
Alyssa wiped her tears and smiled as she watched them embrace.  Anders rested his head on his father’s chest contently; Edward looked up at Alyssa.
“I have won the means to make us a family Alyssa, soon I take your hand and no one will stop me”
As the night waned on little Anders fell asleep.  Ing’Marie came and collected him.  Alyssa turned to go, as Edward needed his rest.
“Nay, do not leave me.” Edward reached for Alyssa the pain of his wounds shined in his eyes.  Alyssa looked a Jonathan. He nodded and went to the door and silently bolted it. He turned and went to his attached chamber.  Michael had already retired and they were alone.  Alyssa turned to Edward and slowly shed her gown.
“Nay my lord I shall not leave you”.
“My lady…” Edward eyed her, she was only in her shift and her beauty warmed his heart.  He watched as she slid under the covers and came to him.
“I want to say with you in your bed my Lord, for it is where I belong”. Edward tenderly embraced her.
“At your side is where I belong my beloved Lady” They looked around the room and then at each other, it was the second time they had ever lied together in his bed. So many years of trysting in the woods they almost forget how it felt to lie in a soft warm bed in each other’s arms.
“Rest now you are safe” she cooed to him.  As Edward lied there exhaustion raked his body; his mind still reeled from the fight with the wolf.  So now Anders knows that I’m his father.  But when will he be able to call me father in his own right?  The witch said I must fight this knight. The one who bears the crest of the black dragon, she warned me thought.  Something will not be right, but what?

Chapter 6

Jonathan woke before dawn and dressed quickly.  He took a pitcher and went to his door slowly he opened it and slipped out into the tower room.  Discreetly he went to the main door and down to the kitchens.  There he got some water and a pot of tea.  Alyssa had stayed the night with Edward and Jonathan kept his ears out for idle gossip.  But if there were they kept it to themselves.  Millie, the castle cook, handed him the teapot and placed two cups on the platter, She nodded her head to him and smiled.  The old women knew but she, like others, did not spread tales. Rather, she hoped as he did that one day the prince would have his lady and child.  Jonathan was thankful to those who understood.

The morning sun inched it way across the stone floor of the tower room. The light ran across Edward’s golden suit of armor and touched the edge of his sword.  Slowly the prince stirred, he neck wound throbbed and he reached for it.  His hand brushed something soft and warm. Edward looked down to see Alyssa resting on his chest.  He stared in disbelief, licking his dry lips he gazed lovely at her.  She looked so beautiful. Her sweet lips were parted softy and her eyelashes rested on her cheeks like the wings of a butterfly.  I am dreaming he thought. Edward swallowed and the pain in his throat increased.  Fighting back his discomfort, he reached out and ran his hand through her soft hair.  This is what I have dreamed of, to wake with her in my arms.  Edward watched as Alyssa stirred and snuggled closer to him.
“Alyssa?” he whispered to her and kissed her forehead.  Slowly she opened her eyes and looked up at him.
“Edward” she smiled.
Jonathan silently came into the room.  He placed down the tea and pitcher by the window.  He looked over at the bed, he knew he should not watch but the sight was one of such tenderness he eyes had never seen. Blushing he turned to getting the tea ready.  The prince held his lady as they kissed tenderly.  Slowly they parted and put their head together.
“I must away my love, for it is morning and they will be here to check on you”
Edward swallowed and grimaced, his words caught in his throat as Alyssa rose and dressed.  Edward did not want her to leave; he tried to clear his throat and tasted blood in his mouth.
“My love, his voice croaked, nay….”  Alyssa went to him; he embraced her and looked up at her.  The tears in her eyes ate away at his heart but she was right.  If she was found in his room all could be lost.  Alyssa slowly drew from him and stood, the prince grasped her hand.
“I love you my lady” he whispered.
“And I you my lord” Quietly she turned, she bit her lip and held back her sobs as she left the tower room.  Edward shot a look at Jonathan and gritted his teeth.
“Easy my lord” Jonathan said as went to him.  He did not want Edward to further aggravate his wounds as he could see blood on his teeth.
“I will call for the surgeon”
“Nay…” Edward growled and sat up. Jonathan caught his shoulders. “Let me go…” the prince struggled and sized the young lads arms hard. The prince was very strong and could easily do him some serious harm.
“My lord, please!” Jonathan called to him with panic in voice.  Edward looked down his heart hurt him. He did not want to be parted from Alyssa. He let go of Jonathan and fought back his tears.
“Forgive me…I did not mean too…” Jonathan eased him back down.
“It is alright my lord, rest now I will be right back” Jonathan went to fetch the surgeon leaving the prince alone.  Edward lied there and looked at the spot where she had lain, he could still feel her embrace….

Chapter 6.....

The next few weeks Edward has a lot of time to think about his life.  The wounds on his neck healed slowly keeping him in bed when he would rather be out of his room and enjoying the springtime weather. Preferably with his lady and son if he could. It had been a long winter, the highlight was always the winter solstice. There was a costume ball which European dignitaries always came to.  It was his parent’s favorite time of year as it also was also their wedding anniversary.  That year the king and queen had been married for forty years.  Edward went to the ball as an Italian court jester. He wore a black and gold costume complete with a cap that sported bells and pompoms.  He stood at sidelines all the long wishing Alyssa were there. They thought that it would be pushing their luck if she came. He himself would not have come but his mother convinced him.  His family urged him to dance as they were lining up to do a traditional folk dance.  Sadly Edward went along with them. He looked to see his dance partner was dressed as a lovely peacock, the way the feathers on her dress curved around her were distracting as they caressed each curve.  Her blue and green jeweled mask covered most of her face and came up high and graceful.  The danced started and they passed each other changing sides, the lady nodded her head to him.  Her moves were seductive and smooth.  As they passed again they took hands behind their backs and moved around in a circle.  The lady pressed her back against his playfully and dipped her head back caught his eye.  Edwards’s mouth went dry she was seducing him!  But who was she?  As the dance went on Edward began to sweat, she moves around me like…like a lover.  When the dance was over she turned and fled from the ballroom.  Edward went after her; something told him he knew just who she was. Out in the hall he caught her in his arms.  She giggled wildly in his embrace.
“My Lady, is it you?”
Aye Sir fool, it is!” She smiled and jiggled the bells on his cap.
“Alyssa… Edward whispered.
“I couldn’t stay away, I want to be with you…forgive me?” Edward held her close to his chest.
“Forgive…? Edward shook his head.  Nay, my lady I am happy you are here.  The way you dance…it”.  Alyssa looked up at him, her eyes shined behind her jewel-encrusted mask. Her red painted lips sparkled as she parted them slowly.  Forgetting all reason Edward pulled her closer and kissed her passionately.  That night Edward remembered walking Alyssa to her room.  She held his arm and cuddled close to him, as the halls were cold.  She bid him good night with a tender kiss and I heart felt I love you.  He walked off to his room in the tower with the scent of her perfume in his lungs and her kiss on his lips.

Chapter 6....

Edward sat lost in his memories when he heard the door to his room open.
“Ah, brother how are you feeling?”  The prince looked to see a tall, fair-haired man standing in the doorway.
“George! It’s good to see you!”  Prince George had just returned from a diplomatic mission to England and wanted to see his little brother.  Word had gotten to him that he was wounded.  George loved his little brother very much and at times was angered with their father for the way Edward was treated.  As crown Prince, George wanted to make a royal decree on his brother behalf regarding Alyssa.  If it was passed they could marry despite Sarson’s disapproval.  George lobbied for this decree but his father stopped him as it might implicate Edward in Peter’s death.  George sat with his brother and listened to his story about the witch.
“Well, I would think father would have been impressed” George scratched his blond beard thoughtfully. Edward stroked the scars on his throat.
“My lady and my son are”
“How are they Edward?”
“They fare well all things considered.  Anders knows I’m his father. He must have guessed it for sure but I revealed it to him the night I fought the beast.  I just couldn’t hold it back any longer.  It was an incredible feeling to hear him call me father…”
“Aye I know that feeling” George smiled.  Edward sniffed back his tears and rubbed his throat.
“Now I must fight this knight, whoever he is, and finally have my Alyssa’s hand”.
Edward looked to the door, in the shadow of the archway stood a young man with long black hair and a cold stare. His arms were folded across his chest; his posture struck with a dark attitude. A slow smile came across his unshaven face.
“Gustaf!”  Edward called.  The young man walked into the room and shot a glance at George.
“Welcome back father” and took his arm.  George gave him a worried look, young Gustaf was indeed a handful to say the least but he smiled and reaching into his coat handed him a small long box.  Gustaf thanked his father and opened his gift.  He held the new throwing blade up and beamed.
“Thank you father, this on is perfect’.  Edward watched his brother and nephew. He dreamt of the day that he and his son could be so close.  George turned to Edward.
“Well brother I will see you later, no doubt Carina is wondering were I am”.  Gustaf walked over to the bed and sat down next to his uncle.
“Sorry I haven’t been to see you sooner, got in trouble again. Father’s going to take this back once he found out what I did” Gustaf held up the blade and grimaced.
Edward laughed “I heard you tripped a priest as he was walking out of a confessional.” Gustaf rolled his eyes.
“Nay, I spooked a nun in the church vestibule”
“Oh then the priest was last week then?  Edward chuckled wiping his tears.
“Aye” Gustaf burst into laughter.  Jonathan watched them, it was good to see his lord laugh and he was pleased.  As they came down from there mirth Gustaf looked at Edward.
Uncle you are incredible, you never judge me.”
“I have not reason to as no one is perfect.” Edward took a chalice from Jonathan
“Grandfather thinks they should be” Gustaf growled and spat on the floor.
“Aye, but I think I’m winning his approval despite all I’ve done” Gustaf eyed him and scoffed.
“You would have to die to impress him”
Edward shook his head and sighed.
“True but the only ones who I truly must impress already love me as I love them.” Gustaf leaned forward.
“You are lucky Uncle, I fear love will never come my way.  I know that in my time I will be King, but the way things are going it will be without a Queen”.  Edward looked at the teenager, for once he calm and not on guard.  His nephew was as the castle ladies put it - the most ineligible bachelor in the castle as his foul mood scared them away.  But he knew one day Gustaf would have a lady of his own.
“Now, now nephew do not fret, it will come don’t worry”
“Perhaps, Gustaf sighed, Well uncle I’m off to be part of my penitence for my foul deeds of late.
“It was good to see you Gustaf” Edward called as the lad left.

Chapter 6....

That afternoon he sat and toyed with his lunch.  The surgeon had been by and said he was well enough to leave his room.  Jonathan was off getting his horse ready.  He missed Alyssa very much. She and Anders had come and visited him but not as frequently as he wished.  Kira sat on the post of his bed, her golden eyes watching for scraps.  Holding up his hand he put a piece of meat between is thumb and forefinger and whistled to her.  Kira jumped off the post and landing on his hand consumed the meat.  Edward looked at her, her soft feathers and beautiful colors always amazed him.
“Edward!” The prince turned to see little Anders at the door.  He lifted his arm and Kira flew back to the post.  Anders ran to him and hugged him tight.
“Ho ho! How are you to day my boy!” Edward smiled.
“You are going out on your horse are you not?  Please take me for a ride with you.”
“Well I don’t know…” Edward looked to see Alyssa smiling at them.
“Are you ready?”
“Aye” Anders grinned.
“Right, meet me in the stables” Anders hugged him.
“Thank you Father” he whispered into this ear.  Anders turned and ran to the door and was gone.
“He saw Jonathan tacking up you horse and begged me to take him here” Edward rose and took Alyssa in his arms.
“I have missed you my love” Alyssa looked at his lips and chill went down her spine.
“And I have longed for you my lord” Edward trembled: his heart was thundering in his chest, his body filled with desire.
“When…when I return I shall take you to our secret place, do you desire it my lady?"  Edwards’s deep voice sighing into her ear left Alyssa numb.
“Aye I desire it and you” Edward brought his lips to hers, the sweet kiss he hadn’t felt in so long sent waves of desire through his body.  She clung tightly to him.  Their bodies were so close they could feel every shape and curve, Alyssa weakened in his embrace, his kiss was ignited her body.  Taking his shoulders she eased him down on his bed.  Edward followed blinded with passion. Their hands worked at each other cloths urgently trying forfill their passion.  A knock came to the door; quickly they disengaged and did up their cloths.
“Who is it!  Edward snapped.
“Milord, it is Jonathan, you horse is ready” They looked at each other and sighed with relief.
“Very well, I’ll be there momentary” Edward called.  He turned to Alyssa his eyes still burned with passion.
“I’ll be back” he cooed and kissed her lips softy.
“And I will be waiting” Alyssa smiled as she watched him leave.  He has healed pretty well she thought.  Alyssa had never known Edward to ever be sick, there son had the usual child hood sicknesses but he too was a fast healer.  Once she recalled when Anders had fell off his pony and sprained his wrist, he never fussed and didn’t even cry. Once the surgeon was finished with him he was back on his pony before she could stop him. He walked around with his bandage like a hero back from the crusades.  She saw so much of Edward in Anders he was brave and daring, but smart too.  Edward had taught him a lot, he was good father to him, it was more then she could ask for.  Alyssa rose and walked to the window. Down below she could see Edward and Anders getting ready for their ride.  Kira flew across the field and swooped down landing on Edward’s hand.  Alyssa sighed to herself, could what Edward said be true?  Could what be a way we can be wed?

Chapter 7

Anders climbed into the saddle before his father and took Goliath’s reins
“Lets go!” he cheered.  Edward took the reins and mussed his hair.  The Stewart opened the main gate and stood by as they road out. Edward and Anders rode in the forest, joyfully the little lad called for him to go faster.  Edward grinned and spurred Goliath on. Kira flew high over them, her cries sounded through the skies.  Edward had never felt so alive; the happiness he felt was immeasurable.  To be with his son was a rare treat indeed and he savored it.  As they rounded the bend Edward slowed Goliath to a walk.
“Father that was great!” Edward held him close.
“I am happy you like Goliath my son” Anders looked up at him.
“Is it true what they say, that you went to the witch so you could marry mummy?”
“Yes my son, it is true” They looked up the thundering off hoof beats. A horse and ride raced paced them at top speed. Goliath shied and sidestepped; the prince got him under control. Edward looked back at them.  Too fast he thought, I’ve never seen a horse run so, his strides where longer then Goliath’s!  He was a knight, perhaps a messenger… Edward looked up and saw Kira coming down to him from the sky, he thrust up his hand and she landed on his wrist.
“Hello Kira” Anders said and stroked the feather on her neck.  The bird peeped and flapped her wings.
“Come my son it time to return”
“Must we father?”  Edward smiled weakly, he wanted to spend more time with Anders but he knew that was not possible. There was enough talk about his encounter with the witch; he did not want any gossip about Anders.
“My son there will be a time went I can always be with you, but for now we must go…forgive me my child” Anders looked up at his father an saw tears in his eyes.  He looked down at his hands and tried to understand why.

Chapter 7...

Back at the castle Ing’Marie met them at the stables.
“Your highness I will take Anders in for his nap now”
“Of course” he smiled at her.  The prince turned and lifting his son into his arms hugged him.
“Have a good rest my son” he whispered to him.
“I will, thank you father” Edward placed him down and composed himself.  Ing’Marie turned to Anders.
“Run along I will right there” As the boy went off Ing’Marie motioned for prince to follow her into and empty stall.
“Your highness a visitor has come to see Alyssa. I have never seen him before. The old women rung her hands nervously.  They are in the rose garden…sir there is something about this knight that frightens me.”  Edward eyed her and was about to speak when suddenly there was a loud crash. Wood and splinters flew through the air followed by Goliath’s shrill whistle.  The prince dashed out of the stall to see his horse clashing with a large gray stallion. Both animals stood high on their hind legs as they snapped viscously at each other.  Goliath’s bride was torn from his head, his ears flat and his eyes were wild with rage.  The other horse was taller and heavier; its nostrils flared as it lunged for Goliath’s throat. The steward who was holding Goliath was backed against the wall as the horses fought before him.  The gray had broken out of his stall and attacked Goliath and now the Friesian was giving him no quarter.  Edward went to the wall and got a rope.  He eyed the horses as he tried to get around them.  Jonathan had come to see what had transpired.  He took Edward’s lead and got a rope as well.  Quickly Edward roped Goliath, the other horse kicked at Jonathan as he came around, his large hoof missed the lad and plowed into a wooden beam.  Edward pulled his horse back as hard as he could.  This other stallion was huge, and very dangerous, the halter it wore was studded with spikes making it impossible to grab it.  If he could get Goliath out of the way then the stewards could force this monster out into the paddock and pen him up.
“Come on Goliath” Edward soothed as he reached for his head. Friesian horses like Goliath were not known for bad tempers.  Edward had never seen him fight so viciously.  The other horse was a very large breed, perhaps a Belgium/Percheron mix; again another breed not known to be high spirited. The big gray wheeled and shattered a stall door with a sharp kick.  Goliath ripped the rope from Edward hands and lunged at the gray ripping his neck with his teeth.  Jonathan got the rope on the renegade horse with the help three stewards where able to get him to the door.  Goliath whinnied shrilly and ran at the gray.  The horse turned and fled to the paddock ripping the ropes from the Stewart’s hands.  Goliath stopped short at the door and pawed the ground.  He snored deeply and tossed his head.  Jonathan walked up and took his rope.
“Now we know whose the boss of this stable” he muttered. Edward walked up to his horse and rubbed its ear, the stallion lowered his head and nuzzled him.
“You have the heart of a warrior my friend, I didn’t know that” he cooed. Taking him into his stall he rubbed his neck and shoulder.  Jonathan took off his saddle and trappings while Edward looked after the horse’s wounds.
“I wonder whose horse that was?” he said to Jonathan as he cleaned the bite on Goliath’s neck.
“He belongs to a knight whom has recently arrived”. Said Ing’Marie who walked up to them.
“That monster belongs to the one who has come to see Alyssa?” Edward handed Jonathan the cloth.
“Right, put some ointment on this bite. I’m going to see what this all about.”  He eyed the boy and stalked off.  Little Anders peeked out from behind a block of hay.
“That was amazing!” he squealed.
“Anders!” Ing’Marie scolded him, “I should tan your hide for not listening to me!  The little boy walked up to Goliath; the horse lowered his head and nickered softy.   Anders reached up and stroked his velvet nose.  Goliath’s big brown eyes wear calm as he nuzzled the boy with affection.  Anders smiled.
“You are very brave please look after my father for me” he whispered.  Taking Ing’Marie’s hand they turned and left the stable.

Chapter 7...

Edward walked out past the keep and across the north lawn.  He knew now the visitor must be the rider he saw out on the road.  The horse was the same, however he had not gotten a good look at the rider.  He felt his side for his dagger as he came to the rose garden.  His parents had created this lovely garden many years ago.  Every breed of rose was kept here and new ones created by the castle botanists.  In the mists of the garden there was a fountain surrounded by stone benches.  Edward came to the archway and stopped.  There sitting with Alyssa was the knight. His armor was black and his tabard white, a very ornate sword rested at his side.  He turned to Edward and smiled.  Edward eyes went from his piercing blue stare to the black dragon on his tabard, his hand tightened on his dagger. It is he! Edward stared at the knight, he could feel the hackles rise on his neck and his face redden.  The knight stood and bowed at the waist.
“Good afternoon your highness, I am Sir Victor Cyris. I have come as I was told of the lovely Alyssa and wanted to meet her.” Edward eyed him Cyris, he was much taller then him and older.  His skin was tan and his dark hair was oiled and tied back tight, on his chin was an elaborately groomed goatee that pointed down sharply. He had an arrogant air about him that disgusted the prince.
Edward nodded and looked him over.
“Pray what land are you from?”  Cyris coughed and looked around.
“I am from a little country south of Germany, you would not know of it”
Edward narrowed his eyes.
“Why wouldn’t I, my sister is Queen of Germany…” Alyssa rose as she saw where this conversation was going an in a moment they would be at each other.
“My prince?” she piped up.  Edward turned to her, the dark expression on his face faded and he smiled. “Would your highness walk me to the castle as I am weary and want to see my son”
“Of course my lady” Alyssa took his arm and squeezed his hand.  Edward turned to the knight.
“Cyris, your horse has cause some trouble in my stables, he has been put in a pen in the yard.
The knight bowed.
“Forgive me your highness, I will of course pay for any damages.”
“Come my Lady” Edward turned from him and led Alyssa away.

Chapter 7

As they assented the tower stairs the where greeted by Jonathan.  The prince turned to him.
“Prepare for to stand watch tonight.” he commanded. Jonathan looked at Edward in shock but quickly bowed.
“Aye your highness, I will be at the ready to defend you and your Lady”

Once they were in the tower they embraced tenderly.
“Oh Edward, I was so frightened, that knight he…”
“Shhhh my love, he cooed, you are safe with me” Edward looked around his room, the door was bolted and they were alone.
“I want you to say here with me for now” Alyssa looked up into his green eyes.
“Edward do you know who he is?” The prince felt his stomach turn, he did not tell Alyssa what that witch had told him for he did not really believe her.  But know he could not deny it.  This knight was here for her.  Settling down on his bed her took her hand and arranged his thoughts.
“My love, you know that I went to the witch and asked her help in our situation, well she told me that a knight would come baring the black dragon on his tabard.  He will ask for you hand, I will challenge him and god willing defeat him, then we can wed according to my grandfathers law”.
“Edward…he has already asked me…”
“What did he offer you?” Edward knitted his eyebrows together. Alyssa looked down.
“He promised to pay Peter’s old gambling debts and get my manor house back. He said I would be a Lady again and that Anders and I would want for nothing”
Edward closed his eyes and tried to control his anger.  Cyris was his rival, surely he would try to woo Alyssa with his wealth he tried to reason.  Alyssa saw his trembling hands turn into a fists as the prince tried to control his emotions. She placed her hand on arm and looked up at him.
“I love you Edward, I could never accept his offer.” The prince opened his eyes and swallowed.
“You have turned him down?”
Alyssa looked into his eyes, she saw his anger but also fear.
“You are my love and the father of my child, I want no one but you” Edward turned to her and gathered her his arms. Alyssa looked up at him, her blue eyes shined.  Edward beheld her beautiful gaze. She loves me; I did not doubt her.  I have never had a rival for her affections before, my heart feels such aggression, and my senses are keen.  I will kill this upstart for he will not take my family from me.  But Edward still worried, there was something different about this knight he could feel it, the witch warned him.  He prayed whatever it was he could handle it.
“My love, she cooed into his ear, we were not able to go for our ride” Alyssa pushed his hair back from his neck and kissed it tenderly and slowly till she reached his ear. Edward trembled and held her tighter, he moaned as her lips nibbled his earlobe.  Edward turned and crushed his lips into hers gripping her tight. They were in his room, and why not his heart cried.  She is mine, that beast will never have her!

Jonathan stood at the end of the hall to the tower room, dressed in mail his sword at his side. He scanned the hall through the slits in his visor. He knew that the day would come his lord would not spend the night alone. He also knew that this Sir Cyris was here for Alyssa, the rumors had already spread around the castle.  Edward needs this time alone with Alyssa he thought. They needed to reinforce their love, dangerous as it was.  He stood fast gripping his shield and prepared for a sleepless night guarding the couple.  In the chambers below Anders lied in his mother’s bed and looked to the window.  She was with father and Ingmarie had given him his dinner and read him a story.  She had managed to get him down to rest after the eventful day.    Anders looked over at Kira; the blue falcon was perched next to his bed.  She had arrived just before dinner with a message tied to her claw.  It was from his mother, she told him she would be with father for the night and to be good.  She said that Kira would stay with him until her return, at the bottom of the note she signed it goodnight my little lame, Edward too signed the note. Sleep well my son, we love you he penned in bold letters.  Anders looked at Kira’s soft feathers and proud head; his thoughts went back to his first memories he had of Edward.  He called emotions more then words or pictures in his mind.  He was being held in strong large arms, the scent of leather and metal came to his nose.  His tiny ears became aware of a sound like a drum.  It was the beating of a heart, but not the gentle heartbeat he had lived with for nine months.  It was strong almost nervous and beat quickly.  It was the heartbeat of a new father: excited, proud and strong.  Anders thought of that sound and the times he heard it and it comforted him as he slipped off to sleep.

Cyris sat in his room and looked to the tower. “They are together… no matter, she will be mine”.  Turning to a mirror on the wall and looked at himself and stroked his beard.  His eyes glowed red as he smiled.

Chapter 7...

Tenderly Edward kissed Alyssa face as they lay together. His lips softy brushed her cheek.  Alyssa tried to catch her breath; she looked at him misty-eyed.
“My lord, what strength you have” The princes passion was the strongest she had ever experienced.  Never had he taken her to such heights of pleasure.  Only once before did his lust almost take control, but now he had went beyond all barriers.  Edward smiled and pulled her to his chest.  His heart was beating so hard; he could still feel his body shaking.   Slowly he stroked her arm as she lay with her head on his chest.  His mind was still reeling from the euphoric state he was in.  As he looked around the room his eyes cleared. It was night already.  How long were we together? he pondered. He felt Alyssa snuggled closer to him. He tightened his grip on her and looked at the tattoo on his arm: the falcon and the double A’s for Alyssa and Anders. They are the most important people in my life; I would live for them and die for them.  He looked over at his armor and sword; Cyris, you life is forfeit, I will never relent! Alyssa felt him tense; she reached up and caressed his cheek.  Edward looked down at her and smiled trying to conceal his tears.

Chapter 8

The midafternoon sun played across the courtyard as Edward and Cyris walked toward each other. As Edward traveled across the flagstones, his eyes turned briefly to the tower window. He swallowed and held his head high as Alyssa was watching him along with Anders. The King and Queen were also watching him from their window. Servants and stewards peeked through doorways as the pair stopped before each other.  Jonathan watched from the doorway as Edward pulled a glove his waist and slapped Cyris hard across his face.  The knight looked at Edward and he gave him an evil glare.  Words where exchanged and Cyris bowed and turning on his heel left the courtyard.  Edward turned and looked around; all the eyes he had felt on him had disappeared. Looking up at the tower he gazed at Alyssa and his son; he stood tall and placed his hand on his heart, then he raised to them in salute.  Alyssa smiled and blew him a kiss. Anders watched his parents with excitement, never had they shown their love in public before.  The way they looked at each other made him feel good inside.  Jonathan came out to Edward and the prince turned to him.
“On the next full moon I am to fight Cyris. He has chosen battle by sword in the place of his choosing.”
“Were will that be my Lord?”  Edward tucked the gloved back in his belt.
“He did not say, Edward raised and eyebrow, however…” Anders ran up to him, his face flushed with joy.
“You challenged him, I saw!”  Edward bent down and ruffled is son’s hair.
“Yes my boy I did” he looked up at Alyssa, she smiled gently as her tears ran from her eyes.
“My lord, she whispered, for us you do a great service. I thank you.” Alyssa said as she curtseyed to him.  Edward stood and taking her hands raised her to her feet.
“For the women I love and the child she bore for me I promise to be champion and defeat this knight at all costs”
As Edward kissed Alyssa’s hand Anders looked up at them and smiled, he will fight for Mum and I.  He looked up at his father with reverence, the prince had worn his royal garb for the meeting; the sapphire circlet and collar of state made him look so serious. Anders reached up and touched the large royal ring on his father’s hand.  Alyssa and Edward looked down at him and smiled.  Edward knelt and showed his son the ring.
“This is the ring of a prince. The stone is carved with own coat of arms.  Your grandfather, the king, has the same but his had a crown over it.”  Taking it off Edward took Anders hand and placed the ring on his finger.
“You my son are a prince as well.” Anders looked at his mother and then back to Edward.
“I…I am?” he blushed and looked down at the glittering sapphire. To Anders Edward was not a stuffy royal prince, he was the best friend he had ever had.  He never called him your highness or my prince, he never thought of it in that way.
“Yes my son, when all is said and done I will crown myself. But remember you are who want to be. I will never prevent you from being yourself” Anders smiled and looked at Alyssa.
“Is mummy going to be a princess?” Edward rose and looked into Alyssa eyes.
“Aye, I shall crown her on our wedding day” he sighed as he took her hand.
“My lord, I accept you as husband for truly you have always been.” She whispered.   As Edward kissed her hand Alyssa smiled and swallowed her tears. To be able to show her love for him in public, if only for this one time meant more then the world to her.  He had sent forth the challenge that would be the deciding factor in her and Anders lives. The prince looked up from his kiss and she studied his green eyes, for so long now she wanted to be a family with him and Anders. She knew how he suffered that he could not be her husband and father to there son and of his drunken rages thought she would never tell him she knew. Now she saw hope in his eyes and it infected her soul.
From their window the King and Queen saw all that had transpired.
“The challenge has been made and accepted. He is my youngest son, I fear for him.” Steven said.
Gwen rested her head on his shoulder.
“You were younger still when you fought for me”
“Aye, I was” he smiled.  “Still this knight trouble me…”

Chapter 8...

In the following days two squires bearing Cyris’s coat of arms came to Visborg castle.  They arrived one night unannounced and went directly to Cyris’s chamber.  With them they brought many things, as Alyssa would soon find out.

Asleep and in her dreams Alyssa was in the arms of her beloved.  They were in a paradise only seen in the most beautiful dreams.  There she gazed into Edward’s green eyes.
“Wed me my princess” he cooed to her softy.
“Yes oh yes” she heard herself say. Their lips engaged in a tender kiss that was as sweet as honey blossoms on a summer breeze.
“Mum!” a voice called to her; her lips slowly left his as her misty eyes tried to focus.
“Anders?”
“Mum wake up!”  Torn from her dream Alyssa rolled over.
“Anders…what is it?”  The little boy jumped up and down with excitement.
“Mummy the room is full of treasure!”  Alyssa sat up and looked around to behold a kings ransom in gold, jewels, dresses and textiles.  She rose and walked among the rare finery.  Anders found a jewel encrusted dagger and sighed with delight.  Coming to her senses she told him to put it down.
“But why mummy?” Anders gave her a disappointed look.
“Because, she sighed, these things are from Sir Cyris. They must all go back to him.  Alyssa looked toward the door. “Ing’Marie!” she called.  Looking down she saw a beautiful mahogany jewelry box; it had her initial A on it in gold.  She opened it and found a fabulous diamond and ruby necklace worth many million kronas and with it a letter that was addressed to her.  The script was exquisitely written in scarlet ink upon parchment stamped with the seal of the black dragon.  The words seem to almost float above the page as she read.

To the lovely and fair Alyssa, I give to you a gift of my affection.  Such treasures are small compared to my love for you.  For you are the fairest lady in all of Gotland and my heart will forever be yours.

Alyssa looked up from the letter and frowned.  She knew Edward would be furious.  Ing’Marie came to the door and put her hand on her hips.
“Good lord!” she exclaimed.  Anders was sitting on the floor and was playing with a handful of emeralds. Alyssa turned to him.
“Come now my son it is time for school.” She turned to the door to see Jonathan gaping at the sight of Cyris’s gift.
“I am sorry, Anders will be along shortly.” Embarrassed she steered the young man out into the hall.
“My lady do not worry…I”
Alyssa sighed and wrung her hands.
“I know you will not tell Edward of this, but some how he will know.  I am returning all this to Cyris.  I do not want his gifts, the mere sight of them makes a mockery of my Lord.” Anders come out of the room and hugged his mother.  Alyssa kissed his cheek and smiled.
“Have a good day”
“Goodbye mummy”
As Anders slipped from her embrace she managed to remove the dagger he had taken from his pocket. She smiled as Jonathan and Anders bid them farewell.  Back in her room she looked at the silver dagger, it hilt was encrusted with deep red rubies. If Edward were to see it his rage would be uncontrollable.  Going to her desk she wrote a quick note to Cyris then she and Ing’Marie called for some stewards to remove the treasure and carry it back to Cyris quarters.

Chapter 8...

Alyssa watched as the last of Cyris’s treasure was removed from her room.
“That’s the last of it.” she said as Ing’Marie made her bed. She went over and helped the old women with the coverlet. A Stewart came into the room and looked around.
“Is that all M’lady?”  Alyssa looked over at him.
“Yes that is all.” her eyes traveled to the doorway and she blanched.  There was Edward holding Kira in hands, scarlet blood marked her breast. Panic and tears filled his eyes.
“My lady help me, Kira has been wounded….” Quickly Alyssa took a blanket and spread it out on the bed; she took Kira from Edward and laid her on her back on it.  The flacon peeped weakly as Alyssa examined her.
“She was cut with a blade…. I need to stitch her wound”. Edward said weakly.
Ing’Marie went to the cabinet and came back with her Alyssa’s sewing case.  Opening the box she handed her a pair of little scissors and then began to thread a needle. Alyssa looked down at bird as she brought the scissors to its chest.
“Kira, I must cut your feathers, please you must be still”. As Alyssa worked on the bird Edward watched in shock, he felt so helpless.  He looked down at his blood stained hands.  Why had Kira attacked Cyris? She had never attacked anyone before.  Oh god, please do not let her die.  Alyssa was able to calm the bird and stitch her wound.  She then placed Kira on her side and taking some straw put it around her to keep the bird warm.  Edward came up to the bed and sat next to her.
“Thank you my beloved, thank you.” Alyssa put her hand on his.
“We will know in a few hours if she will survive her wound, pray what happened?” she whispered.   As she spoke she took a wet cloth and wiped the blood from his hands. Edward looked down and watched her.
“Don’t know what got into her. I was in the field and Cyris came to us.  She went wild, I was afraid she would break her leg so I untethered her.  She went right for him; I could not stop her.  Alyssa put her hand on his face.  Her heart was heavy, as Kira was a very special friend to both of them.  She did not know if the bird would survive but she prayed it would.
“Cyris hurt her, he had a dagger…” Tenderly Alyssa embraced him, Edward clung to her and sobbed.  As she held her beloved, Alyssa thought of the first time she saw Kira.  She was in the castle gardens sketching flowers on her drawing tablet when she heard the distant cry of a falcon.  She looked up to see the bird plunging down toward the earth.  The bird landed at her feet and seemed to be struggling.  Alyssa found that her tethers had somehow were tangled in it’s tail.  She reached for her and avoiding her beak untangled the jess.  The bird looked up at her and peeped.
“You are a beautiful falcon. Pray where is your master?”  Kira flew up and landed on her wrist, slowly Alyssa stroked her neck.
“Ah there you are!” a familiar voice said. Out of the bushes came Prince Edward.  Alyssa eyed him; he looked dashing in his leather garb.
“I see you made a friend”
“Aye I have, good day your highness” Alyssa bowed her head trying to hide the blush on her face.
“Good day Lady Peters.  My lady, let me take her you ware no glove and her talons are razor shape” Alyssa passed him the bird.
“She has not scratched me” Edward looked at her arm and smiled.
“Nay, she has not”
Taking her hand he sat next to her on the bench.
“Her name is Kira, she is a peregrine flacon. I raised her from a chick” he looked at the bird fondly.
“She is a very beautiful bird your highness” Edward turned and looked into her eyes.
“Alyssa, dare I say that you are the most beautiful bird in the world?”  Alyssa looked down and blushed.
“Aye Edward you may…” Edward put his finger under her chin and slowly lifted her face to his.  Alyssa trembled as his lips gently met hers. Such soft tender lips, she could feel the blush deepening on her face and the tender warmth she felt being so close to him.
Alyssa could still feel that first kiss from all those years ago.  Now her beloved was frightened and worried.  She rubbed her hand across his back and soothed him.
“I am sorry” Edward whispered.
“Nay, it was not your fault.” They looked in the doorway to see Anders.
“Mummy what has happened to Kira!”  He cried as he ran to the bed.
“Easy now.” Edward caught him in his arms.
“Father?” His green eyes were wide with fear. Edward settled him down and explained what happened.
“But why father?”  The tears on his son’s face angered him but he knew his must say calm.
“I do not know Anders, but I will find out”
The boy went over to Kira and spoke to her in a gentle tone. Edward held Alyssa and they listened to their son.
“Kira, please do not die, mummy, father and I would miss you so much” Kira’s yellow eyes watched him as he smoothed her wing feathers.

Chapter 8...

That night Alyssa placed Kira in a box lined with soft straw and set her near the fire.  Anders could not sleep so he stood watch over her.  Edward too wanted to stay but he knew he could not.  It was past twelve when he rose to leave.  Embracing his son he wished him a good night and to try to get some rest.  The little boy hugged his father tight and proclaimed that he would stay awake and look after Kira.  Edward went to Alyssa and took her hand.
“I thank you for all your help my beautiful princess” Alyssa looked into his tired eyes.
“Kira is doing better but in the morning we will know for sure. Go and rest now my love.”
Edward nodded and looked over at the fire.  Anders was sitting attentively by Kira’s box. Turning to her he looked into her eyes.
“Good night my love”
“Good night my lord” Turning his head Edward kissed her tenderly.  A tear escaped Alyssa’s eye as he drew from her and silently left the room. She turned and walked over to the window.  The moon hung in the sky a small crescent.  When it was full her Edward would risk his life for her and Anders.  Cyris had showered her with a king ransom in treasure. Did he thing he could by my love?  She turned and looked at her son.  Oh no, nothing can buy the love I see in my child’s eyes or the love I feel in the arms of my prince.  She got ready for bed, Ing’Marie had already retired.  She went and put a blanket around Anders shoulders.
“Good night my lamb”, she kissed his forehead
“Goodnight mum.”
As the night waned on Alyssa laid in her bed, she looked over at the empty spot beside her and sighed.  She wished Edward were there with her holding her in his arms.  All her fears had always dispersed in his embrace.  She looked over at the fire; little Anders was asleep.  She got up and checked on Kira.  The bird was resting quietly in the straw; her breathing was normal and even. She arranged the blanket around Anders and looked out her window.   She saw a light in the top room of the tower.  Edward was awake, she had hoped he would be able to rest.

Edward had gone down to the library in search of some books.  He brought a stack of them back to his room.  The prince went through the book of heraldry in search of Cyris’s coat of arms.  It must be hear somewhere he thought as he went through the giant tome.  The door opened slowly, Edward looked up to see his father.  Edward looked back at the book and knitted his eyebrows. What was he doing here so late?
The King walked up to his son and gave him a concerned look.
“Edward I heard what happened to Kira, I am very sorry” Edward motioned for him to sit.
“She will be fine god willing” Edward scanned the page of the book, frustration came to his gaze.  “I cannot find Cyris’s coat of arms” King Steven folded his hands on the table and took a breath.
“Edward you will not find it there. I have been trying to find out who he really is, but the search has come up with nothing.  We have no knowledge of this knight and I fear he is not who he says he is.” Edward looked up from the book and into his father’s dark blue eyes.
“Father, when I visited the witch she told me he would come and she warned me that not everything would be right”
“Then perhaps she has sent this...this wraith to fight you?”
Edward closed the big book and looked down.
“No, I believe he was already on his way. I have had dreams of a black dragon, a horrid beast with wings so large it blocks out the sun.” Steven shot him a glance, a black dragon! His eyes went to Drake bane as it rested next to his son’s armor.  Steven was just wed to Gwen and expecting the first child when he ventured into the mountains to kill the black dragon forty years ago. Gwen’s pregnancy fired his passion to destroy the beast and save his family and kingdom.
‘My son what happens in you dream?”  Edward took a drink from his chalice and standing went to the window.
“It is always the same. I am in my armor on a mountain when a creature descends on me from the skies.  Its roar is a mocking laugh. I fight it but it wounds me and leave me to die in a pool of my own blood.” Steven watched Edward as he looked out into the night.  He could not remember the last conversation they had had like this.  They were not fighting with each other, abet Edward tone was a bit short.
“What do you think it means my son?” Edward turned and gave his father a hard look but his expression faded as he saw the concern in his father’s eyes.
“I don’t know, he shook his head looking into the chalice. But I do know I must fight Cyris for…for my family who I love and if I die I pray I take Cyris to hell with me.” Steven rose and put his hand on Edward’s shoulder.
“Perhaps my son there is one thing I can do to help you. I have never knighted you that I know that was wrong of me.  The protection you will receive for the blessing will help you fight Cyris. Allow me to knight you my son. I can tell you do have a chivalrous heart. I was too blind to see it”

Chapter 8....

Edward looked at his father in shock; he had knighted all his brothers and nephews save him. He had never been offered a knighthood as Edward was always considered the runt of the litter so to speak.  He wasn’t half as big as the other boys were and he resembled his mother more then his father. He would rather be a forest ranger then a lordly prince let alone a knight.  But this offer was an olive branch, Edward looked in his heart and found forgiveness and love for his father.  The king was right, it could only help his situation.  Excitement came to his heart, as he knew his son and his lady would be thrilled.  As for chivalry, only now did he realize that he had been already leading a chivalrous life.  Edward took a breath and smiled.
“Aye father, I will become a knight for my Lady and my son.”
“You are a good man my son, I know this now.  Forgive me for wronging you. I am an old fool”
Steven embraced Edward.
“I have already forgiven you father” Edward said as tears escaped his eyes
It was the first time in many years King Steven embraced his youngest son. Ever since Edward was wounded at the witches cave King Steven began to realize that his youngest son was indeed a man and the way he treated him was wrong.  Now he found a way to express the new found love for his son and indeed he was very pleased.

Chapter 9

In the early morning light Edward knelt before the altar in St. Johan’s cathedral.  The church was still save for the faint coo of doves high up in belfry. He looked up the stained glass window above the altar; the image of St. George and the dragon lit up slowly as the sun rose.  Edwards hands rested on his sword loosely as he looked down at the sunlight that was creeping across the floor; it illuminated the writing that was craved on the top step: “Behold the Dragonslayer, savior of the world.” Dragon slayer Edward thought, there hasn’t been a dragon slayer in many years, forty to be exact.  Taking a breath he looked up at the saint.  Perhaps I, the unlikely, am he?  Silently a priest came to him and blessed him making the sign of the cross on his hands, his heart and forehead.  Edward looked up at the priest and for a moment felt different; a gentle calm came over him. The priest knelt before him and heard his confession and absolved him henceforth.   He looked back to see Jonathan waiting for him at the doors.  Edward rose his and placed drake bane over his shoulder, his red and white vigil robes furled around him as he turned and left the church with Jonathan.

Alyssa and Anders got ready to go to the knighting ceremony.  King Steven was to do it in the church that morning a nine.  Kira was doing better now, the last few day’s she was able to stand on her perch but she had not flown since the accident.  Anders wanted to take her with him but Alyssa suggested against it, as the falcon still needed to rest.  Ing’Marie helped get the boy dressed in his best cloths. Going to her closet Alyssa looked at her dresses.  There was one she always wanted to wear, she hesitated at first but then pulled it out.  Ing’Marie looked up.
“Aye my lady you should wear it, it would please the prince I am sure” Alyssa smiled and held the dress to her chest, it was deep blue trimmed in gold, the royal colors of the Thernhard family. Quickly she got dressed and did her hair.  She looked at Anders and beamed, he was image of his father dressed in black and tan.
“Come now my lamb we cannot be late!”

The court was seated in the church along with the town’s people who came to see the ceremony.  Alyssa looked around; there were so many people attending Edward ceremony.  King Steven stood before the altar flanked by Queen Gwen, the royal children, George, Michael and Stephanie.  Anders could barely sit still, his father was being knighted and his excitement jubilant.  The inner doors opened slowly and everyone turned to look. A hush came over the crowd; there in the doorway stood a knight in armor that gleamed like the sun. Prince Michael turned to his brother.
“I never thought I would see this day”
George smiled folding his arms over his chest.
“Eventually we all come to realize how important our family is to us”
Alyssa sighed at the sight of Edward, her son climbed over her to be a better look.  She stared as he walked by, Jonathan and a page followed quietly behind him.  Alyssa saw Edwards’s eyes turn to her and she caught her breath. Anders gripped her arm.
“Oh mummy he is magnificent!” Anders whispered.
“Aye” she whispered softy.
His red cloak furled around him gracefully as Edward knelt before his father. Jonathan and the page took their positions at his sides.  The king smiled and looked down at his son.  Taking the sword of state he placed the blade on Edward’s shoulders as he spoke.
“In the name of God, of St. Michael, and St. George, I dub thee Sir Edward knight and Prince of Gotland”.  Jonathan and the page came forward and put his new tabard on him.  His old one was black with an orange crown, the new on was blue and featured the golden crown topped by a rising sun, the color of his majesty’s knights. The Queen smiled and wiped her tears, she had made that tabard for him years ago and now he would finally be able to wear it.  Edward looked up at his parents and smiled he could see the happiness in his mothers tears and there approve in his fathers eyes. His family too looked upon him with happiness.  They all knew the trouble he had with Father, and to see it finally resolved brought joy to there hearts. Edward glance down at the words craved on the step when a sound came to his ears, it the rustling of feathers.   Instinctively he turned and raised his left arm.  A gasp went through the church as a bird sailed down the isle and landed on Edward wrist. Anders grabbed his mother’s arm.
“Mummy it’s Kira!” Edward looked at the bird and smiling turned to his father.
“Now I am ready”

Chapter 9....

As was tradition, Edward was to go on his first ride as a knight.  Jonathan had prepared Goliath, brush his coat so that it gleamed and polishing his tack and hoofs.  Outside the church Edward’s family congratulated him.  Alyssa and Anders watched from the side.  Anders wanted to go up to his father but she held him back.  She did not want to remind him of the fact that he could not express his love for Edward in public.  Ing’Marie found them in the crowd.
“Aye my lady he is a grand sight the prince”
“Oh aye” Alyssa looked over at him as he conversed with his brother Michael. Slipping from his mother hand Anders made his way to Edward.
Trembling, the little lad went up to him and bowed.
“You’re…your highness?” his little voice stammered. Edward turned from Michael and looked down at him.  King Steven came through the crowd.
“Come now my son, you must go on your first ride!” and ushered Edward to his horse.  The prince looked back at his son, the hurt expression in the boy’s eyes torn at his heart.  Alyssa looked around and did not see where Anders was. Ing’Marie began to look around.
“I’ll find him my lady and then I will tan his hide for running away!”  Trying to control her panic she started asking people if they saw him.  She turned to see Edward ride off he was looked back, a worried expression on his face.
“Anders!”  She began to call through the crowd.

King Steven went back into the church.  His mind was at rest for the moment. He had knighted his youngest son, and now the boy had a large task ahead of him.  He reached the altar and kneeling began to say a prayer for him.  The special prayer he said after all the knighting he had ever done.  As he silently said his words he heard a sound coming from the south transept, it sounded like sobbing.  Crossing himself he rose and went to the go look.  There behind a statue of St Johan was a little boy.
“Come now little one do not cry” As Steven got closer he realized who the child was.  Anders crawled out and looked up at the king.  He was so tall the child had to take a step back.  Wiping his tears and steeled himself and bowed.
“Your Majesty” he said as evenly as he could. Steven knelt and reached out to him.
“Pray now, what has made you cry? You are a brave boy, I know a lot about you”
“You do?”  Anders eyed the king.  Steven smiled.
“Of course I do” The deep commanding voice Anders has always hear him speak was now but a gentle rumble, it was calming and familiar all at once.
“I must not tell you why I have cried sire, it is forbidden.”  Anders began to back away.
“Nay, Steven said gently, I know who you are. We have never met and that was my fault not your fathers.”
“My father is dead sire” Trembling Anders tried to control his tears.
“It is for my friend that I cry. I wanted to wish him well on his knighting but…” the king smiled.
“Anders you are truly a brave boy and I know you will be a brave man as well.  You have been told to keep a secret that I have known all along” Anders looked up at Steven with wide eyes.
“Aye, I have always known.” Slowly Anders walked closer to the king.
“Your majesty I…I” Steven took his hand and drew him close.
“You my boy are my grandson, this I will not deny”.  Anders looked into Steven’s deep blue eyes and bit his lip.
“Grandfather…why did father not acknowledge me?”  Steven looked at young boy; his eyes and hair reflected his beloved queen, his chin already marked with a tiny cleft.  But his face, his expression mirrored his own.  He was a beautiful child, how could he know explain all that had happened and the laws that separated his mother and father.  His own refusal to pass the royal decree Prince George has drawn up to unit Alyssa and Edward.
“But he did, in his heart he acknowledged you and I know he loves you very much”
Alyssa went into the church she had still not found Anders. She had the castle Stewards looking everywhere him.  Standing at the altar she heard people talking as she drew closer she put her hand to her mouth.  There was King Steven talking to Anders!  Alyssa went to them.
“I am sorry your majesty, he got away from me” Alyssa curtsied and looked down. The king rose.
“Alyssa, my dear it has been too long. Can you forgive me for being a fool?”  Alyssa looked up at the king, many a time he she had hated him for the way he treated her and Edward.  But she knew that hate leads nowhere.
“I know now that you accept my lord and for that I am thankful, pray do you accept our child as well?”  Steven reached down and lifted Anders into his arms.
“I accept you my grandson, Prince Anders Carl Thernhard.” Anders shot his mother a wide-eyed smile.  Dizziness came over her she put her hand to her mouth and collapsed to her knees.  The room began to spin and darkness surrounded her.

Chapter 9....

Out on the road Edward traveled to the forest.  He could still see the disappointed look on Anders face.  He would make it up him but still he wished he could have acknowledged him.  High above him Kira drifted on the wind.  Soon he found himself deep in the forest.  Stopping he found a stream and he and Goliath slaked there thirst.  The skies were getting dark and cloudy and the air was heavy with moisture.  As Edward turned to go a shadowy figure emerge from the water.  Goliath whinnied and backed off.  Spellbound Edward watched the purpled robed apparition; it was a shade of the witch of Gotland. Her voice sounded distant like the remnants of a dream.
“Edward time is short for the evil one is hear. Pray take care, for now you have more at stake then before” Edward trembled.
“What…what do you mean?”  The shade put its hands together.
“The result of love and desire it but a beautiful gift, pray protect it from his evil”
“My son?” Edward whispered.
“You have the heart of a father and your love can be given to more then one” The apparition bowed and slowly sank into the freezing water. More then one! Alyssa! Edward pulled on his helm and mounting Goliath raced back to the road.

Alyssa was taken to her room were the castle physical, Olaf, examined her.  The king and Queen watched and waited.
“Well she fainted as we all know, however there was a reason…” King Steven walked up to him.
“Tell me.” he said impatiently.
The door of the chamber flew open and Edward strode in.  Tossing his helm aside he knelt before the bed and took Alyssa’s hand.
“Alyssa” he cooed softy. Slowly she opened her eyes and looked toward him. Her voice but a whisper.
“My love.”
“My lady…are you withchild?”  He ran his gauntleted hand over her belly. Steven and Gwen looked at each other then back to the couple.
“Aye my lord I am withchild once more, pray how did you know?”
“The witch, she came to me in the forest just now.  I should have known the love we had shared could only resulted in a new life. A life I will defend with my own.”
Tenderly they embraced each other, carefully Edward gather her into his arms.  Anders crawled out from under the bed where he had been hiding the whole time.  He took a quick look around the room and limbed up on the bed.
“Mummy, Father?”  Edward reached out and drew him between them.  The king and queen smiled as they watched them.
“The make a beautiful family.” Gwen beamed.
“Aye they do” the king nodded and taking the queen’s hand lead her from the room. They turned at the doorway.
“Congratulations children” they smiled. Edward was explaining that now Anders would have a sibling.  The joy on the little boys face seem light up the room.  Alyssa and Edward blushed and put their heads together.
“Thank you” they smiled.  Olaf turned to Alyssa.
“I will now turn you over to my wife, Torgard.  She as you know delivered little Anders here.  She will carry on with your appointments and well being”.  Taking his bag he bow. “Congratulations” he smiled and left the room. Edward turned to Alyssa and rising her chin kissed her with all the passion in his heart.  Anders blushed and looked to the doorway.  Standing there is a white frock, was a little girl his age. Her blonde hair was in braids; her blue eyes looked shyly at him.  She smiled and dropped a tiny curtsy.  Anders stared, he had not recalled seeing her before.  Now he found himself blushing at the sight of this little maiden.  He climbed across the bed and went to the door.  The girl turned and as quick as hare ran off.
Alyssa ran her hand across Edward’s chest.
“He is growing up so fast my lord.” Edward smiled as he watched Anders look down the hall.
“Aye he is, pray who was that little girl?”
“She, my lord is Jeannette the daughter of Torgard, the castle midwife and is the same age as our son.”
Anders heard his parents conversation, perhaps I shall see her again he thought.

Chapter 9....

In the following days Sir Johandotter met with Prince Edward about Anders.  He had wanted to take the lad as his squire.  Edward agreed, as he knew Anders wanted to take the post.  That afternoon sir Johandotter came to Anders while he was at sword practice. Sir Olaf, who had been training the boy as per Lord Sarson, stood aside as the other knight addressed the boy.
“I have seen your skills young man and I am impressed.  I ask you to be my squire.” Anders drove his sword into the ground and knelt.
“My lord, I accept your offer, my I serve you well.”
Johandotter smiled and nodded
“Rise my squire, you work beings at sunrise.”

The next morning Alyssa held her son with tears in her eyes.  He would now live with Sir Johandotter in the knights quarters on the other side of the castle.
“Mother do not worry. I will still be here.” Anders looked up at her reassuringly.  Alyssa smiled he even sounds all grown up.  Dressed in his dark blue tabard he looked every part a young man.  Edward walked up to the doorway and beamed.  My son, he looks so good.
“Father.” Anders nodded and stood proud.
“I see you are off to your duties and trust you will do well. I am very proud of you my son.” Tears came to Edwards’s eyes as Anders reached up to hug him.  He embraced the boy tightly.  I hope this is not the last time I hold him in my arms for yesterday he was but a babe and now he is on his way to becoming a man.  Anders turned to his parents and smiled.
“I must away, pray I shall see you later.” Alyssa walked up to them and taking Edwards hand smiled down at her son.
“Yes we will always be there for you when you need us.” Edward nodded.
“Yes my son we always shall.”

Chapter 10

Sitting in his room Cyris looked up at the night sky.  The moon was almost full.  Alyssa had rejected his gifts; the flacon that attacked him was a favorite pet of hers and that no doubt added to her dislike of him. The young Thernhard showed courage when he challenged me.  He will have to show a real deal more if he is to defeat me. Running his fingers over the flame of a candle Cyris smiled.  Alyssa is withchild as I predicted. It will give me an extra edge as Edward’s love for her and the child will make his judgment cloudy. When all is said and done the child can easily be eliminated.  The light from the candle on the table cast a strange shadow of the knight against the wall.  Not of a man but a foul creature from the depths of hell.

Alyssa sat at her embroidery, as she stitched she could feel the effects of her pregnancy.  Torgard said she was almost a month along but Alyssa knew that she was more.  After she and Edward were together last she did not have the heart to take the potion.  She thought that perhaps after years of taking it she could no longer conceive.  But now she could feel the tiny life with in her.  Ing’Marie came into the room and brought Alyssa a basket of pears.
“My lady, I know that you liked these fruits when you were carrying Anders. I thought perhaps you would like some.”
Alyssa stood and stretched. Smiling she took a golden pear and bit into it.
“Yes I do crave them, thank you old friend.”

Later that evening she joined Edward for dinner in the tower.
“How are you feeling my love?”  Edward asked as he sat down at the table. Alyssa looked over at him and smiled.  She is flushed and her hair shines even more so, she is so beautiful.
“I am well my Lord.”
Edward had a light meal prepared as he recalled Alyssa not being well at times before.  As they ate they discussed their day and there son.
“Anders is doing very well. Sir Johandotter is quite pleased.”
“I knew he would do well, Alyssa smiled, Anders told me that he has seen Jeannette again.”
“Really?”  Edward raised an eyebrow.
“Yes, Alyssa smiled dreamy eyed, he is in love with her but doesn’t have the courage to tell her so.”
Edward took her hand.
“He will find it as sure I did.”
Alyssa looked into his eyes, love and passion glowed in his gaze.
“Surly my lord was brave as I saw no fear in eyes.”
Rising Edward took her into his arms.
“It was my heart that feared that the most wonderful women in the world would not return my love.”
“You were brave as you took the chance and I do not regret my response.”

Chapter 10

As the sunset Cyris ventured from his room, he met his squires in the stables.
“Make ready my horse!” he snapped to them.  Jonathan was in Goliath’s stall giving the horse a good brushing.  He looked over the wall to see Cyris squires preparing the grey.  Where is he going the young man thought? The challenge was almost at hand. He watched his lord practice his fighting skills with various members of his family. Michael and Gustuf helped him brush up on his swordsmanship as well as the king himself. Still Jonathan worried for his lord. It not his skills but all that was riding on his winning the challenge.  When he would watch him fight he could see fire in his eyes and strength in his swing. Edwards’s passion was fueled by his love for his family and Jonathan was proud to serve them.  Cyris mounted his horse and turning the gray galloped off out of the stables.  Jonathan noticed he did not take a lantern with him.  That was strange he thought…

Edward held Alyssa tenderly in his arms.  The cool night air blew softy through the room as they snuggled under the thick blue coverlet. Resting her head against his chest she listened the sounds of the night.  She felt so content; the warm of Edward’s body next to her, his strong chest moving slowly as he breathed.  She felt his hand slowly slips to her belly and she smiled.   Edward caressed her tender, my god I shall be a father again after all these years, and this time I shall be a proper one.  I have tried to be the best father I could to Anders under the guise of a friend.  Looking down at Alyssa he tender kissed her cheek.
“Do you think I have been a good father?”  Alyssa looked up at him; his eyes were full of worried.
“Aye my lord, Anders adores you so.  And our new child will love you as well, do not worry”
But Prince Edward was worried; the challenge was only in two days.  He had to win or Alyssa, Anders and unborn child would be at Cyris’s mercy.  Alyssa ran his hand lover his arm tracing her finger over his tattoo; her gentle smiled eased the sad expression on his face. My uncle says the love of my family will give me strength and, he is right for I can see it in my lady’s eyes and feel it in my son’s embrace. And it is that strength I shall take into battle.

Out in the darkness Cyris rode at an unearthly speed.  As he traveled the moon raced across the clouds overhead.  Soon he came up a castle set deep in the mountains. Hewn out of solid rock, the black spire reached like a claw to the heavens.  Stopping at the gate Cyris raised his arms and chanted word in an ancient tongue.  The gate rolled up and the drawbridge silently lowered.  Inside the castle Cyris was greeted by shadowy figures, he followed them to an enormous room.  The walls were lined with black marble and the floor was red as blood.  Incense burned in brass braziers on either side of a large golden throne. Cyris assented the throne and looked to his aids.
“Has all been made ready?”
“Yes my lord” they hiss.  All is coming to plan he thought, I will have Sarson’s daughter, and she will make a sweet addition to my home.  Her “mate” and his children will be eliminated.  Cyris raised his hand before him and glowing red orb appeared in it.  He looked to see Alyssa asleep in Edwards’s arm.
“Prince Edward you know not who she really is, she is my destined mate”

Chapter 10....

Lord Sarson arrived at Visborg castle early the next morning.  He had heard of the challenge and wanted to speak to his daughter.  Edward awoke and looked down upon his love.  She was still asleep, the way she snuggled so close to him warmed his heart.  Tomorrow is the day that I must prove to my family that I am a man.  Jonathan crept into the room and over the Edward.
“My lord I am sorry but lord Sarson is her to see Alyssa.”  Edward gaze turned dark at hearing that mans name.  He looked over an Alyssa, I wish we had all morning my love.  Alyssa stirred.
“My husband…is it morning?” Edwards chest tightened, he has so long to hear her call him her husband.
“Aye my…my lady” Alyssa opened her eyes and smiled. But her happy expression faded when she saw the heartbroken look on Edward’s face.
“Pray, what is wrong?”  Edward choked back his tears.
“You for Father has come to see you” Sighing Alyssa reached for a robe.
“Very well she will be ready soon.”
Jonathan raised an eyebrow.
“He wants to see you too my lord” Edward shot him look.  Why the hell does he want to see me? Alyssa dressed and tired up her hair.  Confused Edward stood and let Jonathan dress him.  Surely that old bastard was not going to try to talk me out of the challenge?  Even he knows of the laws of the land.

Chapter 10....

At the door to the solar Edward took Alyssa’s hand.
“Do not worry, I can handle this” Edward steeled himself as they walked in. Jonathan announced them.
“His Royal Highness, Prince Edward Jason Thernhard and the Lady Alyssa Sarson.”  Lord Sarson was standing by the window and turned to them, his expression one of fear and grief.
Alyssa went to him.
“Father what is wrong?”   Fidgeting with his hands he looked up at them.
“Children there is something I must tell you.”
The prince shot him a cold stare.
“Here me out your highness, it is of the most grave importance that you hear this”
Visibly shaken Sarson reached for a chair, Alyssa helped her father sit and called a servant over with some wine.  Edward folder his arms as he watched them.  What could he be so upset about?  Perhaps he has found out that I have lien with his daughter as man?  Nay let the old twit speak; he cannot change my mine.   Gathering his thoughts Sarson called Edward over.
“First I would like to apology for being a stupid old fool.  I know that Anders is yours and Alyssa son”.  Edward went for his dagger.
“Why you monster…!” Quickly Alyssa get in front of Edward, the tip of the blade nicked her fair beast.
“Shhhh my love pray wait, let my father speak” Her soft word and gentle gaze calmed him. Tenderly Edward wiped the spot of blood from her chest.
“Forgive me” he green eyes pleaded. Sarson watched them and marveled at the love they expressed.  He loves her no doubt in my mind now but what I must tell them is horrible I hope I can.
“Of course my warrior” she smiled.  Edward passed his hand over her belly gently.  Sarson’s eyes widened for a moment then he smiled, she is pregnant again.  Then fear came to his heart.
“Your highness if I may…” the couple turned to Sarson.

Chapter 10...

There is no other way to tell you this, many years ago an evil creature came to my lands.  He threatened to destroy everything and kill all my people if I did not strike a deal with him. So on her twenty-third year he would came and wed my daughter, maiden or no wed or not.  I did not think the creature would return”.
“Cyris, Edward growled, what manner of beast is he?”  Sarson looked at him with terror in his eyes.
“A dragon of the most horrid kind. But not just a beast he is a wizard as well. As you see he can take human form.”  Alyssa gripped Edward’s hand tightly. He drew her into his arms.
“Sarson, ever since I have meet my lady I have dreamt of black dragon who challenges me.”
“It is the same beast your highness” Edward grit his teeth.
“So is this why you would not let me wed your daughter, because you made a pact with a demon?”  Sarson hung his head.
“Aye your highness I did, and now you must win for that beast will destroy my lands and….
“And what?”  Edward growled.  Sarson held his face.
“The dragon will kill your children as he plans to join with Alyssa. Upon hearing his words Alyssa fainted into Edward arms.
“Alyssa!”  Quickly Edward brought her to a sofa and called for Torgard. Edward knelt by her and rubbed her hand.
“Fainting is normal your highness, her mother god keep her, fainted when she was withchild as well” Edward shot him look, he did say Cyris would kill his children.
“Aye it’s my child and of that sir I am very proud” the tone of Edward voice sharpened as he eyed Sarson.  The old man smiled gently.
“And you should be, I heard you’re Anders is now a squire your highness” as Edward thought of his son his heart calmed.
“Aye he is, you know he looks just like me when I was eight years old” Alyssa woke from her faint to see Edward have a polite conversation with her father.  She has always dreamed that this would happen.  Edward turned to her.
“Are you feeling better? I called for Torgard.”  Alyssa smiled.
“Nothing is better then to awaken to see you and my father having a nice conversation.  Sarson sat next to Alyssa on the settee and took her hand.
“Alyssa, can you ever forgive me for selling you off to a monster?”
“You had no choice. Pray didn’t King Steven send a knight to destroy the beast?” Sarson looked at Edward.
“Your highness what I’m about to tell you might shock you about your family, please it is the truth.   Back then King Gustuf I reined this land, he sent his son, the then prince Steven, to slay this dragon.  He barely made it away with his life. Embarrassed the prince charged me never to tell anyone about the defeat.  He then told the people the dragon was gone knowing full well the bargain I had to strike.  Edward’s mind churned, my father lost a fight with a dragon! And then covered it up, but why?

Chapter 10....

Sarson saw the looked on Edward face.
“You’re wondering why?  Well your father was the Dragon Slayer and, if you can forgive me, very self-righteous. However, mistakes are made, I am no less guilty then he.”  Edward sighed and looked at his hands.
“I know my father and his pride and ego does get in the way sometimes.  Recently we reconcile our own differences, and he accepted Anders as part of the family.  He also recognizes Alyssa as my lady.  Father had me knighted to protect me, now I know exactly why” Sarson looked at his daughter, she was gazing at Edward with love and devotion.  She trusts him he thought.
“My daughter I see the faith you have in your prince. It is a dangerous deed he must complete.” Reaching into a pouch on his belt Sarson pulled out and amulet.
“I know we are Christian, however, many years ago I too went to see the Witch of Gotland.  She gave me this. It protects against evil sorcery and foul magicks.  I use to hang it over Alyssa crib, as I feared Cyris would steal her from me”.  Sarson held up a heavy black necklace with a round coin dangling from it. On the disk was arcane writing in red.
“My prince I want you to wear it when you fight Cyris, it will give you an edge” Edward took the amulet and rubbed his neck.
“You saw the Witch, pray what was your price?” Sarson pulled open his shirt to reveal three long scars down his chest.
“A lion of hellish proportions and great speed.” Edward shook his head.
“It was a wolf that was my test, it was different for my brother”
“Aye, but the white prince was not the first of the royal family to see the Witch. Alyssa narrowed her eyes and sat up with Edward’s help. Lord Sarson smiled.
“Tales, rumors, so much has been said about the witch.  Still, he turned to Edward, please wear this, for my daughter and for Gotland”.  The two men stood and faced each other.
“Amongst the people you are know as Edward the brave your highness, pray, may god be with you on the marrow.” Sarson bowed to Edward and took his arm, turning to his daughter embraced her.
“Don’t worry father he will win. I place my life in his hands for I love him so very much”
“I know you do, farewell” Sarson smiled weakly.  Turing he picked up his helm and left the room.  Edward sighed and poured himself and Alyssa a chalice of wine and sat with her on the couch.  In his hand he held the amulet and looked at it. Alyssa put her hand on his.
“I remember seeing that necklace as little girl. It was always in my room” Ing’Marie would say that it was very special and to never touch it. Edward swallowed and turned to her.
“My love I want you to wear it…”
But Edward your need it…” the prince gripped her hand.
“You need to be protected from him, if I am defeated…
“Nay…you will not be if you wear it… Tears came to her eyes. My beloved Edward I could not lose you”.  The prince embraced her.
“Nor can I lose you and our children”.  My god I have never made her cry before, I mustn’t add more stress to her at this time.
“Forgive me my Alyssa forgive me”.
Torgard who had just came to answer their call turned from the door with Jeanette.
“Why are they sad” Jeannette asked. Torgard took a breath.
“Well, Edward the brave must fight in a challenge for her hand. He loves her very much and is trying comfort her”.

Chapter 11

Out in the practice yard Edward swung his sword high.  He clashed with his nephew prince Raymond.  The lad was fast on his feet and was giving Edward a good workout.
“Faster Uncle!”  He called as he whirled his sword and clashed with Edward.
Prince Raymond was Gustaf’s younger brother; the twelve-year-old was an accomplished fencer.  His quick moves helped Edwards hand eye coordination.  As Edward fought he tried visualizing the dragon striking at him. The agony of the dream came to heart; the dragons mocking roar and the thought of his family being taken ripped through his soul.
“Nay” he growled and swinging with deadly speed hit his nephew’s sword and shattered the steel blade.  Raymond backed away and stared.
“Christ’s nails, even I am not that fast!” Raymond exclaimed. Edward caught his breath and looked down at the broken shards. Prince Michael and King Steven were watching Edward practice from the far gate of the field.  They looked down to see Anders wide eyed.
“Father just shattered that sword, has the strength of Achilles!”  Michael looked down at the boy.
“Aye your father has strength and conviction” King Steven knelt down and put his hand on Anders shoulder.
“He also has the love of you and your Mother. That gives him the courage he has.”  Anders looked at his Grandfather and uncle.
“I guess that is why he is called Edward the brave.”  The looked up to see Edward and Raymond come up to the fence.  Raymond held up the broken sword.
“He is ready as he ever will be” The young blonde smiled and thrusted the shattered sword into the ground.  Anders climbed between the fence and took his father’s helm from him and passed him a skin of water.  Edward took a drink and poured some water over his head and shook out his hair.
“Thank you my boy” Anders smiled up at his father, he eye full of excitement. Edward glanced at the severed sword and back to his son. “Did you see what I did?”
“Aye father, I never knew a sword could be shattered so” Edward looked at Michael and smiled.
“Oh aye it can” Edward reached down and pulled the broken sword from the ground and handed it to Anders.  “Keep this my son, and let it remind you that you can do anything.”  Anders beamed.
“Thank you father” Edward knelt and embraced his son.

Chapter 11...

In the castle Alyssa tried to go about her daily duties. Her pregnancy was making her tired and she stopped for a rest.  Edward did not want her to work but she would rather keep busy rather then sit and worry about tomorrow.  She was sitting out side of the royal kitchen when Millie saw her and came over.  Millie was the castle seamstress and cook. She had served in the castle since before the rein King Gustaf I.  A plump and motherly woman in her sixties, she sat next to Alyssa and smiled.
“How fair thee Alyssa?”
“I am well, just tired” Millie took a needle and tread from her apron and began to mend a tear in her skirt.
“I hear little Anders is doing well as a squire” Alyssa smiled.
“Aye he enjoys it, he has grown up so fast…” Millie nodded.
“Oh aye all my children are now grown men and I am a grandmother more then twice”.
“You have been here so long. Pray tell me do you remember Edward as a child?”
Millie gave her a quick sideways look and put down her sewing.
“Aye, he was the most beautiful child you had ever seen. The king and queen had been trying long and hard for one more child. She leaded closer and lowered her voice, Queen Gwen had much trouble when she was pregnant with the white prince.  Some say the king would have done anything for another son.”
Alyssa looked at her, what was she saying?  What would the king do?  Just then Torgard came to her.
“My lady it is time for your rest” Alyssa turned to Millie
“Thank you Millie” the old women nodded and standing walked off to the kitchen.  Torgard looked at Alyssa.
“What did she say to you? Your as white as sheet!” She took Alyssa’s arm and led her down the hall to her room.

Chapter 11...

Torgard looked toward the window. Edward and Alyssa had been through so much together and there love endured.  They had never known a secure time together, there’s was a relationship of secrets and hidden passion.  But now Alyssa was asking her to divulge a secret that she did know how the girl would take.  When someone is desperate they take desperate measures but these acts, if known, could topple the very throne of Gotland.  Torgard turned to Alyssa.
“Child, tell me why do you love the prince?” Alyssa eyes shined and a blush came to her face.
“I love him because not matter what he has always been there for Anders and I.  He is kind and gentle and is not afraid to be a man.”  Torgard sighed and took her hand.
“Do you love him no matter what he might be?”  Alyssa frowned, she did not care about his title or money. He could be a poor miller and she would love him all the same. But the other women’s tone indicated something more.
“Torgard what do you mean?”
The midwife turned to her and began her story.  Three years after Prince Michael was born the King and Queen wanted another child, but their attempts proved fruitless.  Queen Gwen became very depressed and prayed for another child.  She became a shadowy figure cloaked in sadness.  The king could not bear to see his beloved so heartbroken. Hence he turned to his only alternative: to find the fabled witch of Gotland and ask her for advice.  So the king donned his blue armor and buckled on his sword and went on a quest to find her.  He traveled the forests and hills of Gotland for many a month in his search.  It was in what is now the dank lone forest that he found her cave.  But then it was a paradise. The King was surprised to find a lovely woman with the eyes of a cat instead of an evil hag.  He explained to her that he and his wife desired another child but had no success.
“My lady, the Queen and I wish for another child but one will not come to us” The witch smiled and looked up at him.
“Your Majesty, when Prince Michael was born he took all the life from her and now she is spent”
“Please, is there anything we can do?”  Steven pleaded.  The witch watched as he sank to his knees before her, tears ran down his agony stricken face.  Sympathy came to the witch’s heart; she too had longed for a child as well.  She knelt in front of him and took his hand in hers.
“Your majesty, I can help you but it would involve strength and courage”
“These things I have my lady” The witch leaned closer to him.
“Are you willing to do anything for this child?”
“Aye anything” he stammered.  The witch looked into his eyes.
“Put you right hand on my belly” The king reached out and placed his hand on her.  The witch placed her right hand on his inner thigh.  Steven looked into her cat like eyes as she spoke her spell.
“Life dwells between us and in us and through us.  May that life be founded in love and brought to fruition”.  Her words lulled the king, as he looked around he saw they were no longer in the dark cave.  They were in a forest of myth and legend were tiny fairies flew like pollen a breeze that was warm and scented with wildflowers.  The witch smiled and as she did she changed into an image of Gwen. Astonished Steven gazed at her.
“My Gwen?” he whispered and ran his fingers through her red hair.  Shyly the witch traced her fingers across his dark beard.
“For the moment I am” she whispered.  Steven took her carefully in his arms and shared his passion with her until the sun had set and they fell asleep in each other’s embrace.  The king woke the next morning to the soft nose of his horse prodding his hand. In his head he heard the words of the witch.  Within a month the queen shall be withchild, and he shall be a special child, he will grow to be handsome and strong.  Remember to show him the love you have for him, for I know you have much love in you heart.  Farewell, my once and only love."

Chapter 11...

True to the witch’s word Gwen was pregnant within a month. Through her magick she was able to transfer the child to Gwen.  He looks like his parents but as you know he is different, he loves nature and prefers to be alone.  Along with his height and the fact that he not a warrior by nature.  Alyssa had listened in silence; she did not know what to make of what she heard.  She reached into her pocket and took out a lock of hair, it was a braid of hers and Edwards intertwined with Anders.  No wonder he and his father fought so, he wanted him so much he would do anything.  My love is like his father, he has his passion and will.  Tears came to her eyes.
“I love him Torgard, I care not of his origin, I…love my Edward” she sobbed. Torgard embraced her.
“Ooh Alyssa I am sorry, I should not have told you”
“Nay, I knew he was different, from the first time I saw him.  It was then that I knew he would be the man I have dreamed of.  Nothing can take that away”
Edward strode into the room and tossed his helm aside.
“Alyssa what’s wrong!”  Rising Alyssa embraced him.  Edward looked at Torgard.
“What has happened women?” he snapped at her.
“Nothing my prince, when a women is withchild she can…”
“Bullocks, what happened?”  Alyssa turned her head up to him; the anger faded from his face and was replaced with tender concern and love.
“I love you my Edward, do not worry I am fine.”
“Torgard, please leave us now,” Edward said calmly.  Torgard curtsied and left the room.  Edward found the lock of hair in her hand and held it between his fingers.
“I remember when we made this, it seems like yesterday”
“Aye my love time does not pass when we are together” Alyssa put her hand over his.
“Nay, he whispered it will forever stand still”. Lending down Edward brought his lips to hers. Alyssa met his gaze for a moment; his green eyes sparkled with a golden light. Alyssa clung to him as his tender kiss deepened to one of passion.  As they parted Alyssa slowly pulled a lock of his hair to her face. Edward watched her tiny fingers play with his hair.  These moments he thought are what make me feel like a man.  Alyssa let the lock slip from her fingers and smiled.
“I am feeling better my lord”
“Can you tell me what got you into such a state?”  Alyssa brushed his cheek softy.
“I heard a story of a man who would give do anything for his child, a very special child” Edward wondered about her words.  There were many myths and legends in the land.  There was even one about a long lost brother of his who lived in the forest with the fairy folk. Taking her hand he led her to her bed.
“You must rest my love” Alyssa lied down and arranged her skirts, Edward sat on the side of the bed and taking off his gauntlets helped her with her stays.  Edward yawned and stretched his shoulders.
“Pray rest with me” Alyssa beckoned him.  Rising Edward threw off his chainmail and climbed into bed.

Chapter 11....

Looking into her dark orb the Witch of Gotland smiled.  She knows and she did not reject him.  That is the love my son is warranted.  The witch raised and eyebrow as the scene in her orb changed.  King Steven was sitting on his throne, he looked so distance and alone.  The witch could feel the worry in the king’s heart for Edward.  His challenge was tomorrow.  Tears came to her eyes.
“My once and only love do not despair, our son will be victorious”
King Steven looked up from his throne; he had heard the witch’s words.  She had helped him in a way not possible by any other.  And he never thanked her. Rising he called to his aid.
“Make ready my horse”

The king did not even have to look up as turned off to the lone forest.  He knew the way all too well.  It had been twenty-five years since he had last been here and the landscape had grown dark and freighting.  He remembered when it was beautiful enchanted forest.  Now it showed deep torment and pain in its twisted trees and jagged rocks.  He reined in his horse at the cave entrance and sliding from the saddle. Raised his visor he reached for his sword that was strapped to his horse side.  He buckled it to his waist and looked up at the entrance to the cave. It had been so long; perhaps she will not want to see me?  I do not blame her.  As he walked in the darkness he smelled a sent as sweet as honey coming toward him.  It was her scent and he knew it well, swallowing he came into her main chamber.  She stood at the table, ageless and beautiful as when he first met her.  Steven could see tears in her eyes; he knelt before her and hung his head.
“Forgive me” he sobbed. The witch knelt silently before him and raised his head in her hands.
“Steven, my pain is reflected in the land you see outside as I am one with it. For once you were gone and never returned my sorrow became what you now know as the lone forest. Your thoughtlessness has warranted the test amongst which all that ask my advice must pass.  I have dreamt of the day you would return. But I steeled my heart and left you and your family alone”
“I cannot say that I have not thought of you my lady”
“I have watched you family.  I saw Edward grow into a fine man, but I also saw you deny him happiness and with each tear from his eyes so did the lone forest grow dimmer.”
“I have tried to right the wrong I did”
“Aye I saw, but only after he came to me as you feared I would tell him the truth.  But, my one and only love, the truth is known” Panic came to the king heart.
“Pray, who knows of this?” The witch gripped his hand.
“Someone who loves him no matter who or what he might be” The king hung his head in shame.
“Alyssa…it must be her” Gathering his courage Steven took the witches hands.
“My lady forgive me for I am an old fool, blinded with pride and shackled by my ego.  Thank you for such a beautiful son…our son.”  The witch held her tears.
“I have waited so long to hear those words from you lips and feel them from you heart” Steven embraced her, his own tears soaked his beard as they knelt there on the cave floor.  As he opened his eyes he saw the caves darkness brighten. The dark earthen walls turned to vibrant crystals that glowed with a soft blue light. The witch’s purple robes turned silvery white.
“Thank you for releasing my tormented soul, she said and tenderly kissed him, and now Edward needs our help” Rising the witch held out her hands.  A blue orb formed above her palms, it extended in a shower of brilliant light to become a large sword.  Steven stared at the massive blade; it was sheathed in silver scrollwork like his armor, the hilt was black and studded with jewels. A blue light emanated from the blade and lit the room with its magical glow.
“Take this sword my once and only love, help our son defeat the beast” Trembling Steven reached for the sword, it felt cool in his hand.  He looked down at the blade and drew it from it sheath.  Holding it up he eyed the blade, never had he seen such steel.  He caught a glimpse of himself in the mirrored surface. He thoughts went back over twenty seven years ago when he first confronted Cyris as a dragon; he had barely got away with his life...

Chapter 11...

“My lady, I am not as young as I was…” The witch put her hand on his shoulder, her voice was a gentle breeze to his ears as she spoke.
“Steven, I know you once confronted this beast and failed.  But I have faith in you.  I know it has hurt you these years living with the lie you told. But now it is time to face your fears once more and this time for our son” Slowly the king sheathed the sword and held the pommel to his chest.
“Aye my lady, I know this is what I must do.  I must once and for all help in destroying this foul monster” The witch placed her hand over his touching the sword pommel.
“And this sword created out of pure light and love will break through his magicks and destroy him.  Pray, a stroke to the beast’s heart will put an end to him and his tyranny”
Steven took the witches hand and kissed it softy.
“Thank you” he whispered. The witch drew her crystal orb from her robe.
“Look”
Steven looked within the orb to see Edward and Alyssa in a tender embrace, he raised his eyebrows to see they where floating a few feet off the floor. Withdrawing the orb the witch smiled.
“He has magical powers, yet he does not know of them.  They become apparent when his emotions are strong.”
“Aye he loves Alyssa very much, but they do not seem to have noticed…”
“Nay, they are in love and see only each other for now, but in time his powers will grow”
“Alyssa is withchild once more” the king smiled to himself proudly.
“Aye, the witch smiled, more grandchildren, our other is quite a young man”. Once more she held up the orb, they both beamed to see Anders.
“Time goes buy so quickly, I have seen sixty years,” Steven said.
“For some it does my once and only love, but for me time doesn’t move but stays in the moments I cherish most.”  As Steven rose the witch withdrew her orb.  “It is time for you to go… if we never meet again…” Steven took her hand and held it to his lips.
“You shall see me again, this I promise”

Chapter 11...

Resting in Alyssa’s embrace Edward dreams turned dark and foul.  He once more stood on the cliff with Cyris looming over him.  The dragon laughed at him as his sword swipes missed him.
“Damn you Cyris!”  The dragon turned his head and glared at Edward.
“It is you who is damned or shall I say is a bastard!”  Edward swung his sword over his head.
“Your vile words mean nothing to me beast!”  Rising higher into the air Cyris scoffed.
“And so they should, you are a bastard Edward Jason Thernhard! Since your mother was useless once Michael was born your father looked elsewhere!”
“I was born of my mother the Queen, I bear her green eyes and red hair!”
“Oh you were born of her body but not of her flesh. ‘Tis the witch of Gotland that is your mother!”
Edward stepped back astonished.
“Nay you lie!”
“But I don’t, you know your different Edward…” the cliff fell away and Edward found himself falling to the jagged ground below.  Waking with a start the prince caught his breath.  Alyssa was still asleep in his arms.  Trembling he tried to calm himself.  The dream had been different; Cyris told him the witch was his mother, how could that be?  Taking a breath Edward slipped from Alyssa’s arms and dressed.  I must know if this is true, turning he leaned over to her and kissed her cheek.  Whatever I discover I pray her love for me never fails.

Chapter 11

The sun was setting into the horizon as King Steven walked his horse into the stables. Stewards and stable hands jumped to attention and took hold of his horse. Easing himself off his horse Steven looked around the stables to see Edward standing at his horse’s stall. He reached under the saddle straps and removed the sword.  He had wrapped the fine blade in his cloak. The stewards took the kings horse away, one young man handed him a chalice of wine.
“Thank you” the king said and drained it; passed the chalice back to the servant he went up to Edward.
“Hello my son” Edward turned and looked at his father, his expression sent worry through the kings heart.
“Father I have been waiting for you, we must speak”
“Of course” Steven nodded.  In the kings private chamber Edward told him of the dream.
“Father is it true?”  The king sat up and looked at him.
“Aye my son it is true, without the witch you would not be here.  It was a decision I do not regret, however, I had hoped that you would never know…” Edward swallowed and looked down.
“Does mother know?”
“Nay my son she does not.  I went to the witch because your mother and I wanted another child, as she could no longer conceive.  She was so heartbroken I vowed to find a way and I did…and you are the result.”  Taking in what his father said Edward sat in silence.  The king put his hand on Edward shoulder.
“You were born of love, the love a father has for his child” Edward slowly nodded, he knew the strength of that love for as a father himself he knew he would move mountains for his children. Edward looked down, his heart and mind whirled with questions.
“If mother could not have anymore children how…?” Steven sighed.
“Through the witches magick she was able to make your mother withchild.  Edward shook his head.
“But I look like you father and I have mothers red hair and green eyes.  He touched his face and felt the cleft on his chin.  Steven thought back to when Edward was born.  Gwen was so happy to be pregnant that she redid the royal nursery. She also had new section added on to the gardens as well.  On the night of the dark of the moon is when she went into labor. The town’s people were rumored to say that on the night of Edward birth they heard a voice deep in the forest call out his name.  Steven watched nervously at Gwen’s side, he feared for her.  Their last child had weakened Gwen but the midwife said she was in perfect health. Still it was the way he procured this child that worried him, what if the witch had betrayed him? But all those thoughts faded as he saw the beautiful son born to him, a perfect little child, so healthy and strong.
“My son, Gwen is not your mother, the witch is.  You are a part of her abet you were born of the queen, the witch made it possible”
“You were with her then?”
“Aye …I was. I went to her and begged her for her advice; she gave of herself to me and I to her.  She came to me as a vision of my Gwen, we shared something beautiful together” Slowly what Steven was saying sunk in and Edward looked over at him.
“I am part of her…I know she cares for me, she warned me about Cyris.  She even told me that Alyssa was pregnant again”.  The king sighed heavily.
“She loves you Edward and she has charged me to help you.”  Walking to the table, he unwrapped the sword and brought it over.  Edward watched in wonder as the king unsheathed the blade.
“Magnificent…this was from…from the witch?” He gasped.
Edward reached for the hilt.
“Aye, my son I was to kill this beast long before you were born. I did not and dishonored many others and myself.  Now I have a chance to put it right” Edward looked down, so it was true he did lose the fight with Cyris.  Taking the sword Edward looked at the blade and gasped, in it mirrored surface he could see his father fighting Cyris long ago.  It was like watching a dream. The beast was huge, it evil darkness filled the vision and it dispersed.  Blinking Edward looked away in terror.  I mustn’t be frightened he thought.  This monster wants my family. I cannot let this happen.  They call me Edward the brave, it time to live up to that name.
“My son, we can do this, and we will do it together and I pray it not the last thing we ever do as father and son” Edward looked up at his father, lowering eyebrows sharply determination came to his glance.
“Aye, we will send him back to hell!”

Chapter 12

That evening, all the kings’ knights and his brothers gave Edward a royal feast.  It was a war time tradition that hadn’t be done in many years.  They all shared their stories with him and drank to his victory.  As Edward sat and listened to their stories he looked over the grand fireplace.  There hung the old blue buckler his grandfather wore many years ago.  The red dragon on the shield seemed to jump out at him and he looked down.  His brother Michael was sitting next to him and noticed his expression.
“How far thee Edward?”
“Worried as father too will be there tomorrow” Michael glanced to the window, he could see a light in the church.  Their father was holding a vigil in preparation for the battle. Michael did not have a good feeling about this as well.  But he knew that if his father wanted to help Edward to fight Cyris.  It would be remembered as a noble deed, one that he was long overdue in showing, even if it meant his death.  After the feast Edward went to his room in the tower.  He walked up to the window and looked at the almost full moon.  It’s light flooded the room in an eerie glow.  This moon he had looked upon so many year ago and thought of Alyssa.  It was a night like this that he had first come to her his heart in his hands and passion in his eyes.  She showed him no fear only a timidness that melted his heart.  They had their betroval paper written up that morning.  There father’s signatures would seal there union. A voice came to Edward’s ears. Its soothing words spoke to him like a dream.
“Do not worry my son, all will be yours.  Trust in your father and I” Edward turned to see the witch of Gotland. Trembling Edward took a step toward her.  The corporeal figure before him solidified. She smiled as she beheld him.
“Edward…” The prince took her hands and slowly knelt before her.
“Mother… I don’t know what to say…”
“You do not have to say anything my child” Her sweet voice brought tears to his eyes, never had Gwen been so kind to him.  She loved him, but the feeling he got from the Witch was so much stronger. The witch put her hand on his head.
“You are the child I have dreamed of. I never thought you would come for even I cannot see that far into reality.  But it was foretold that a king would ask me a great favor.  And one day he came to me, his heart full of sorrow as he longed for a child that would not come to him.  He was all that was handsome and brave” The witch ran her hand over the princes face.  “He knelt before me as you do know and begged me for my help”.
“I …I know the story…but why did you help him?”
“I could not turn him away for his desire was mine as well.  I knew that I would not be able to keep you my beautiful child so I charged your father to show you only love” Edward looked down.
“Aye but when I was not the child he hoped for, he lashed out…”
“Steven did not know that a child must be his own person and not always follow in his father’s footsteps.”
“He has caused me much pain, but I learned I could forgive him.
The witch smiled.
“Steven grew to understand, thought, it took him many years”
“Aye he treated George badly as well. Father had made up for all he has done. But now I fear he will meet his end when we face Sir Cyris”
“Edward, if it is his destiny to die at the hand of Cyris no one can stop it, but do not forget your quest.  Not only do you defend your lady and children but Gotland as well.
Edward gave her a sharp look.
“Aye my son, Cyris plans on conquering our land. Even now he summons demons to his aid”. Taking a breath Edward gripped her hand.
“I will defeat him mother, I am frightened but I know I must win.”  His face red with embarrassment he looked away.  Gently the witch turned his face to her.
“All hero’s are afraid my son” Edward trembled as tears ran down his face.
“But I am not a hero” Slowly the witch wiped his tears and bending over kiss his brow. As she faded her voice whispered to him.
“But you are a hero to Alyssa and Anders, they love you and believe in you.  Remember their love it will aid you in your darkest hour”
Edward looked up.
“Mother?”
“Rest now, know that I love you my son”
Edward stood and walked over to the window. The moon hung silently in the sky as he looked out into the night.
“Alyssa I wish could see your face” he whispered. This night of all nights he was forbidden to lie with her as per the law of the challenge.  He looked down and gasped to see an orb of emerald light floating over his left hand.  In it he saw his lady, how beautiful she looked.  Edward sighed; of course, the witch is my mother I have her magick as well. The vision changed to one of the witch. Yes my son; use the powers wisely, as they are driven by the love in your heart.
“If I have them then Anders….”  The witches smiled and faded from the sphere.  Edward tried to take in what he had heard, narrowing his eyebrows he looked into the sphere.
“Show me Cyris.”
The scene turned to the fires of hell; a large eye opened and stared at him.  Edward flinched and the orb dissipated.
“My Lord?
Edward turned to see Jonathan enter the room.
“It is late, you should rest.” The aid steered him to his bed and undressed him hauling off his heavy chain mail. Quietly Edward settled down on his bed, his eyes still looked at the moon, his mothers words drifted through his mind.

Chapter 12...

When Edward woke the sky was till dark. He looked around at the clock on the mantelpiece; it was eight in the morning!  Cyris had not come for the challenge! Impossible he thought as he got up.  Then he looked out on the sky.  The deep black clouds were not natural; they were Cyris’s magick. Down from the sky Kira flew, Edward thrust up his arm and she landed on it.
“Are you all right my lovely bird?” he said as he put her on her perch.  Kira peeped and Edward looked at her.  He understood her!  She had said the whole kingdom was covered in a black shroud.  Edward went to Jonathan’s chamber and tried to walk him, but he could not.  Panic ran threw his heart, quickly he stripped off nightclothes and put on his armor.
“Kira, is all the same in the castle?” The bird bobbed her head.
“Oh god” he gasped and grabbing his sword and shield went to the door.  Kira peeped and he turned, she flew up on to his shoulder.  Downstairs all were asleep. Servants rested at there post, not a person stirred.  He went to Alyssa’s room.  Ingmarie was asleep in a chair but Alyssa was not there.
“Alyssa!” Edward called loudly. He raised his hand and the orb appeared
“Where is she!” he growled.  The image of fire once more lit the orb. There in a dark castle he saw her chained to a large golden throne.  The mocking laugh of Cyris filled his ears.
“No!” he shouted and orb dissipated.  Clenching his fist he sank to his knees.  Fear and anger wretched his heart and tore at his stomach.  That monster has stole my love and cast a spell on the land. Grabbing his nerve he ran to the knights quarters.  There he found Anders asleep like all the rest. He ran his fingers through his son’s hair, Cyris had not taken him and he was safe.  Standing he looked toward the church.
“Father!” he called as he entered the nave.  Kneeling before the altar Steven was looking up at the image of Saint George, his hand gripping the sword of the witch fast.  As Edward approached his heart sank.  An arrow was embedded deep in his father’s chest.  Kira told him of what had transpired.  Tears ran down Edward’s face as the bird spoke of Cyris’s minions and how they fought Steven right there in the church.  When they saw they could not defeat the sword there archer planted the arrow in his heart. But Steven still fought and destroyed them.
“Is… is he dead?”  Kira explained that he was not as he was under Cyris spell. Once the spell ended he would die. Edward touched the sword, as he did it began to glow.
“Father, I must take this sword and your quest” he stuttered and peeled Steven’s fingers from the hilt.  He held it up and light issued from it in tendrils.  It went across his body changing his armor to vibrant silver.  Edward felt different: he could feel the earth beneath his feet and the power that ran through it.  He looked down at the amulet at his chest. The arcane words made sense as if they were his native tongue.  I am a wizard, my god he thought.  Thunder rumbled in the distance, Edward turned to see Devin standing at the doors. Cyris had sent his messenger. Edward strode up he him and gave him a stony stare. His hand gripped the witch’s sword tightly.
“His Majesty King Cyris of Gotland requests you presents in the throne room of his castle in Gaxenberg”. Devin proclaimed.
Without even breaking stride Edward behead the little fool where he stood.

Chapter 12....

Standing outside of the church Edward looked to the dark skies, from his left hand Devin head hung from its dank hair.  The prince took a breath and looked toward the stables, Goliath he thought.  The horse came to him all tacked up in his battle gear; it too shined like a mirror.  Goliath nicked softy to him.
“It’s alright,” he said as he stoked the horses nose.  He mounted the steed and Kira flew up into the sky. Tying Devin’s head to the saddle he took the reins.   Edward looked back at the castle and over to the church.
“I will return Father, I will make you proud” Swallowing his tears he road off into the darkness.

In Gaxenberg castle Alyssa sat alone in Cyris’s throne room. The shackles that held her wrists were attached to a long chain. She was free to walk about but she dare not.  When she woke that morning she found herself here bound to Cyris’s throne like a dog.  The evil knight was looking down at her with a maniacal love in his eyes.  He said he would defeat Edward and rein over Gotland as its King and that she would be his Queen.  Alyssa said she would die before she would agree to any of it.  But Cyris laughed and said the deal between her father, King Steven and he was sealed and there was no way out.  Alyssa thought of her Edward, he would come and fight this horror.  The throne room doors opened and Alyssa could smell brimstone as heavy footsteps shook the floor.  Looking up she trembled as a large black dragon walked into the room.  It's long tail swept across the floor, as it nails clicked on the marble surface as it approached her.  Terrified, Alyssa tried to breathe as Cyris lowered his dark horned head to her.  Eyeing her his long forked tongue licked the tops of her breast leaving slime on her skin that made her wretch.
“You do not like my kiss?”  He purred.  Alyssa gathered her nerve.
“The kiss of a man perhaps”
“Men are inferior “ he growled and stepped away from her.  Looking back he arched his wings.
“So be it” In moments he was once more a human. Alyssa steeled herself as Cyris embraced her; his foul kiss suddenly turned to one of pleasure.  Alyssa trembled I know those lips, as they parted her eyes widened to see she was kissing Edward!  Suddenly he was once again Cyris, the evil knight swore.
“Damn him, what power does he think he has over me!”

Chapter 12...

Edward smiled, his heart trembled and his loins stirred, for just a moment he was able to be with her.  He gripped the reins tight for the moments pleasure left longing in his heart.  The darkness around him fueled his anger. Looking up saw a group of wraith’s walk out of the darkness. They were the remains of old soldiers, there bodies rotted and weapons tarnished.   They’re high-pitched screams sent Goliath up on his hind legs. Controlling the stallion Edward met their eyeless stare sharply.  He drew his sword and engaged them.  Blinded with anger he swung his sword over his head as he dispatching them back to the darkness.  Looking up Edward growled.
“You will have to do better then that Cyris!”
Edward road he pasted the village of Visby.  All was quite and still. The inhabitance were under the sleeping spell. Kira lit on his arm and flapped her wings.
“I feel like the last man in the world” he sighed to her as he adjusted her jess.  Kira reached out her claw allowing him to remove the straps.  “You don’t need these anymore, forgive me for making you were them” The bird turned her large eyes to him.  She told him she did not mind the trappings, but was happy that she did not have to ware them anymore.

Chapter 12...

It was mid afternoon when they reached Gaxenberg.  The land there reeked of evil; the very tree’s where black and twisted. Gray sludge ran in the river and oozed over the banks.
“We are close Edward, take care as the evil has infected the very earth under us” Kira peeped ruffling her feathers in disgust.  Suddenly Edward felt the hair on his neck stand on end.  A deep mocking laugh filled the air, panicking he drew his sword and looked around.  The fetid landscape around him seemed to breathe and pulse.  The ground moved causing Goliath to sidestep, his hooves slid on the wet ground as Edward tried to get control of him.  Black tentacles grew up from the ground and grabbed his horses’ legs pulling him down.  Kira flew up as Edward toppled from the saddle.  Trapped in a cage of back slimy arms, Edward fought their hold.  Kira swooped down and attached the monster boldly only to trapped in its evil embrace.  With all his might Edward turned his sword to them, his mind raced. Their hold was strangling him. He could hear Goliath’s and Kira cry’s for help and his fears turned to rage.  Then words came to his mind strange arcane letters, he looked at them and all at once they made scene.
“Incantous folron imperum!” He shouted. Energy lit his hands causing the black beast to wither in pain and drop Edward from it grasp.
“All of it” he growled. The monster let go of the bird and horse and receded.  Catching his breath Edward stood and slammed his sword into the beast, the blue sword glowed brightly as the monster turned to ash. Edward turned and his heart sank with grief, Goliath was wounded badly. He knelt by his horse and holding his strong neck began to sob.
“Please do not die my friend, I need you” The horses gentle nicker told him that his bones where crushed and that he had wanted so badly to be with him when he destroyed Cyris.  But now he had to carry on without him.
“Nay!” He cried and hugged the horse tighter.
“Edward...?”
The prince turned to see the witch of Gotland. She looked like a goddess in her flowing silver robes.  Trembling Edward wiped his tears and tried to stand.  His legs did not want to move and sank back to his knees.
“Mother” he sobbed as she embraced him.
“My child do not give up hope” Edward looked up at her.
“Father is caught between life and death, Alyssa is in the hands of that monster and… and now Goliath is dying, mother I cannot do this. I haven’t the strength”
“But you do, within your heart you have the strength to prevail.  Look deep within you, remember the ones who love you and who are counting on you”
Slowly she dissipated. Edward took a breath and looked around.  He turned to Goliath and held his strong head.
“My friend I will never forget you, my son will miss you”
“And I shall miss you both, but life will continue as it lives on in your children so it will in mine.”  Slowly the stallion laid his head down and was still.  Edward turned his teary gaze to Kira, she flew on to his arm and brushed her wing across is cheek.  Edward found his sword and removed his pack from the saddle; he also took Devin’s head as well.  Slowly he walked down the road, his heart ached and his body hurt.
“I, the unlikely am he” The prince recalled the words he said on the day he was knighted.  Raising his hand he looked into the green orb.
“Show me the past” he said.  As he watched he saw when he first met Alyssa, the first time he kissed her lips, when there Anders was born he saw himself seal into her room and hold his child to his heart.  He was only eighteen and was a new father.  Closing his eyes the orb dissipated.  “Cyris you have ruined my life and taken all from me”
Kira looked at the prince and peeped.
“He has not taken your memories, nor can he remove the love in your heart”
“No he cannot” Edward looked up passed the forest to horizon, there on the side of Mt. Kebnekaise sat Gaxenberg castle, it clung like a spider to side of the mountain, it’s sharp black spires reached into the swirling clouds like a claw. Edward swallowed and took a breath.
“Time to end this."

Chapter 13

Cyris sat on his throne and drank deeply from a large chalice while Alyssa held her head.  Her pregnancy made her feel sick and she did not want Cyris to notice but it was becoming impossible.  Placing down his chalice the knight looked over at her.
“What is wrong my dear?”  His overly sweet tone made her feel worst.
“Nothing I…”
Cyris raised his hand.
“Come to me” At his words Alyssa felt an unseen hand lift her and bring her to his feet.
“Ah, so it’s his bastard child that makes you feel ill?” Cyris eyed her belly sharply. Lifting his hand he raised her to her feet.
“This is something my bride does not need. So I will make room for my own child” Alyssa screamed as unseen hands held her down.  Cyris looked at her and plunged his hand into her belly.
“No…. Edward!” Her scream echoed around the room.

Out on the mountain trail Edward fell weakness come over him and he sank to his knees. He felt part of his life force call to him; it’s voiced screamed in his soul.  He looked up at the castle he eyes widened in horror.  Cyris withdrew his hand from Alyssa and held up and egg shaped sphere, within was her unborn child.
‘No, she whimpered, please do not destroy it, please” Cyris looked at it and then her.
“Why would you want his child when I can give you strong children who would grow to be magnificent?”
“Because I love him…”
“Love, bah!  Exhaling he looked at the tiny life.  It will live, for the moment” He placed it on a pillar next to the throne where it sat in a claw shaped setting like a jewel.  Alyssa looked at her belly there was no wound.  But she knew the child was gone.  She looked over at the sphere, it was still alive.  She could not comprehend how but it lived. Tears came to her eyes.  Oh Edward where are you?

As the Prince stood he fought his tears.
“Cyris has ripped my child from her!” Trembling he looked at his hand and orb appeared.
“Show me Alyssa” In the orb he saw her sitting at Cyris feet, her face stained with tears as Cyris laughed. Edward’s heart shook with anger.
“Look he has not destroyed the child!” Kira exclaimed.  Edward saw the sphere like a jewel set on the pillar and he looked at it in wonder.
“My child?”
All the pain in his heart and all his fear turned to a fierce courage.  He turned to Kira
“We must get up this mountain!” his voiced boomed.  Taking her he tossed her up into the sky.
“Falonus expandium!” he shouted.  Kira shot up into the clouds.  Her gentle cry sounded and changed to that of a magnificent roar.  Down from the sky swooped a proud griffin the size of lion.  She landed before  Edward.
“I knew you had it in you! She exclaimed
“Aye, even If I did not” Edward smiled and climbed up on her back.  Kira turned her head and her large yellow eyes looked at Edward.
“Hold tight my lord” Edward reached out and stroked her beak.
“Pray why do I hear sadness in your voice?”  A golden tear fell silently from her eye.
“I am not sad, I am happy for I knew the day would come that you would become who you really are.  I had faith in you and …and I have always loved you.
“And I you Kira” The prince felt a warm feeling in heart as he stoked her soft feathers.  Kira turned and looking up at the castle took off for it’s black gate. Edward gripped her shoulders and looked around, his breath was taken away as she flew up into the sky.  He thought of Anders and how excited he would be to ride a griffin.  My Anders is an image of me I do not doubt he will be a wizard as well. He can be anything he wants to be.  As they reached the castle Edward Cyris. His long black body encircled the middle spire of the castle.  Kira screeched and raced forward. Raising his sword high they clashed.  Cyris swiped at Kira as Edward brought his sword down on the beast’s head.  Cyris growled loudly and slipped from the spire causing it to the rupture and break in half.  Alyssa looked up as she felt the castle shake, she saw the stone spire plunge past the window of the throne room.  She ran over to the window, her tether was at its end she tripped and grabbed the windowsill.  The sight before her was incredible.  She saw Edward abroad a white and blue Griffin battling with Cyris.  The dragon and the prince charge at each other in a middle air joust. As they passed the sword sliced across Cyris side, the dragon’s teeth raked Edward arm tearing away the armor.  Edward looked to see a tooth stuck in the chainmail beneath.  Turning Cyris roared loudly his claw covering the wound on his side.
“Enough of this!” he yelled.  Kira veered away just as the dragon breathed a stream of fire at them.  Trembling Edward gripped his sword he looked at the mirrored surface and raised the blade high.
“Electro vantouis!”  A bolt of lighting came down from the sky and knocked Cyris into the side of the mountain and sent him plunging down toward the ground. Kira followed him down; Edward leaned forward as they descended, with his blade aimed at Cyris’s heart. The dragon looked at him and laughed and in a moment disappeared before their eyes.  Edward looked to see the ground rushing up to them at break neck speed.
“Kira!” he cried, the bird pulled up sharply the tips of her wings hit the mountain face.  Catching is breath Edward swore.
“Cyris, fight me you coward!

Chapter 13...

Once more in human form Cyris limped into the throne room holding his wound.  He looked over to see Alyssa at the window.  Striding up to the throne he yanked her chain hard pulling her to him.
“Do not think for one moment he will defeat me” he growled and tossed her to the floor.  Terrified Alyssa watched as he ascended his throne.  His fingers hovered over the oval orb as his blue eyes burned with hellish fire.  Outside Edward dismounted Kira and turned to her.
“If I do not succeed find my Anders and take him to his grandmother the witch, there I know he will be safe” Kira nodded and looked at him.
“Good luck my lord” Edward embraced the griffin and turning went to the black gate.  The gate opened for him and the drawbridge lowered. His eyes scanned the courtyard as he went up to the doors.  Edward glared at the doors and raising his arms they began to open.  The atmosphere inside was of such evil that he felt its weight on his soul. Grabbing his nerve he stepped inside.  Darkness clung to the walls of the structure as he walked into the center of the main hall.  Rich black marble walls stretched up beyond his sight.  The floor was as red as blood and there, written in gold, where words encircling him.  It was a trap, staying still he looked around.  He had only to move and it would be sprung.  At the end of the room her saw a staircase leading up the dark spire.  Gripping his sword he drew it and stepped forward.  Out form the darkness demons sprang at him from all angles.   Edward swung his sword till his arms ached and his muscles screamed in pain as the demon hoard kept at him.  Their black claws grab and swiped at him as the sword sent them to hell.  Fed up and weary he raised his hand over his head, a ball of yellow light appeared in it and he sent it crashing to the ground.  The shock waves sent the demons into the walls where they’re exploded into black dust around him.  Coughing Edward wiped his mouth; he was at what he had done.  Ankle deep in black dust he stepping up on to the black stairs.  Glancing back he saw something in the dust. Reaching down he picked up a green stone from the ashes.  It is a demon heart stone he thought and placed it in his pouch with a smile as he knew of a good use for it.  Edward assented the stairs he looked up there seemed to be no end.  As he walked he thought of his family, tears mingled with the blood on his face as he thought of the wonderful times they spent together.  He past a window and saw the darkness that swept his land.  He had never cared to be a Prince, he thought there was nothing he could do for his people.  But now the time was at hand.  As Edward reached the final stair he paused.  Across the landing stood two black doors that were ajar.  The massive pieces of wood were ornately carved with arcane symbols and encrusted in jewels that stood as high as Edward could see.  At each side there stood a demon sentry, these monsters were clad in ruff-hewn armor and carried enormous halberds.  Tendrils of darkness rolled out from between the doors and across the red marble floor like a fog. The prince stepped forward and the guards attacked. Edward ducked as the first guard swung at him; he rose quickly and planted his sword in the others gut.  Pulling his weapon from the demon he whirled and locked his sword against the others pole arm, the large monster grunted and breaking away rose his halberd. With unearthly speed Edward ran him through. Swing hard he disarmed one and ran the other through.  As he turned he beheaded the first guard, its black blood sprayed in the wake of his sword.

Chapter 13...

Alyssa heard the commotion outside the throne room and her heart nearly stopped.  Cyris turned to see something rolled across the floor and stop before him; it was Devin’s severed head.  Raising an eyebrow he turned to the door.  There in the archway was Edward; anger lit his eyes as he walked up to the throne.  Alyssa drew her breath, the prince was a vision in his silver armor, and he seemed different.  He was confident and so very brave.  She jumped up, but Cyris held down her chain under his foot.
“Edward” she sighed.  Controlling his emotions for the moment Edward turned to Cyris.
“So much for your messenger.  Now come down from you throne and fight me!”  Cyris gave him a sly look as if he was making up his mind.  Edward looked to the orb and then Alyssa, his heart in his throat.
“So be it!”  Cyris growled and stepped down from his throne.  He grabbed Alyssa and kissed her hard, she felt strange and light headed, what was he doing?
“Be ready for me my little maiden” he cooed sarcastically.  Alyssa squirmed out of his embrace.
"Me, a maiden?"  She thought.  Edwards’s anger made him trembled.  To see him touch her made him want to go mad.
“Alyssa is not a maiden you fool, for that I am sure!”  Cyris put his hand on the hilt of his sword.
“You took what was not yours so I restored what was rightfully mine” Trembling Alyssa back away, what has he done to me she thought, I am a women, not a maid, I am a mother…I.  Alyssa looked up at Edward her face blushed and her eyes turned large like a frightened doe. Edward gave Cyris a dangerous stare.
“Damn you!”
Cyris drew his sword and they clashed hard. Alyssa looked on as they fought, she knew there was a spell on her, she tried to fight the feelings of a maiden, innocent and timid over took her soul, no longer did she know the man she loved.  She watched Edward; he was so big and handsome, was he is my love?   Looking over at the throne she saw the orb and took it from it place.  She looked into it in wonder, our child?  How can it be that I hold him? Tenderly she placed it her breast.
Cyris and Edward fought maniacally.  Cutting and hitting each other, their blood marred there bodies and ran from their mouths.  Cyris back away from Edward and raising his hand lobbed a ball of fire at him.  Edward stepped out of its way and returned one back.  The ball hit Cyris grazing his shoulder.  Edward remembered the wound he had given Cyris on the mountain and looked to see it was bleeding heavily.  Edward charged at the knight and slammed his sword into he wound.  Cyris bellowed in pain and slammed his sword into Edward shoulder, the blade bounded off the chainmail but the blow caused the prince the cry out in pain.  Gathering his will Edward cast a spell sending lightening crashing down on Cyris.  It sent the tyrant to the floor, his sword spun out of reach.  Edward strode up to him.
“This is over!”  Edward yelled and brought his sword over his head.  Cyris smiled and reached out his hand.  Alyssa could feel him pulling at the orb.
“No!” she cried as she felt it slip through her fingers and float through the air.  Edward turned and planted the blade deep into Cyris’s heart. Quickly he turned and stopped the orb in mid air.  Catching his breath Edward commanded it into the safely in his palm.  Cradling it gently in his metal clad hands Edward walked up to Alyssa, timidly she looked up at him. Edward smiled gently.
“Do not fear me my love” he cooed softy.
“You, you are…?” She bit her lip and looked into his green eyes. Edward beheld her innocent gaze; the spell had made her shy and fearful of men. “I am Edward and I can break the spell that holds you.  I am a wizard, but mostly I am the man who loves you sweet Alyssa”
“Our child?” she looked at the orb he held in his large hands.
“Aye it is” The orb began to glow brightly and a warm sensation came over Alyssa’s body, she could hear Edward speaking in an odd language.  As she listened to his words a magical energy lifted her off her feet.  Her mind was in a haze as she beheld the golden light around her.  Edward watched the orb re-enter her body and become one with her once again.  Alyssa slowly floated back down, her feet touched the floor and she looked down at her belly and then to the prince.
“Edward, what happened?”
“It is over” The prince embraced Alyssa and sighed with relief.  He looked back at the dark form of Cyris.  Turing he went and pulled his sword from the tyrant’s body, as he did the evil Cyris fell to ash.  Kira came to the window; Alyssa saw her and stared.
“Kira?”
“Aye my lady, do not be frightened” The griffin said and bobbed her head.  Edward came to them and helped Alyssa on the Kira’s back.
“Let us leave this foul place”

Chapter 13...

At the castle the royal family stood around the king’s bed.  They had found him with in arrow in his chest and Olaf had tried his best but Steven was dying.  His children, save one, were there; Queen Gwen sobbed softy at his side.  Slowly Steven opened his eyes and looked to around.
“Where is Edward?” he whispered.
“I am here Father” a voice called from the window.  Everyone gasped and stepped back as they saw Prince Edward and Alyssa standing at windowsill with Kira.  Anders looked up from his spot at his grandfather’s bed.
“Mother, father?” he gasped.  Edward and Alyssa walked over to the bed.  The prince knelt before his father’s and took his hand.
“Cyris is destroyed, all is as it should be” The king took a breath and tried to focus his fading vision on his son.
“I am proud of you Edward as I am proud of all my children, but now it is time for me to die…”
“No father it is not” Reaching into his pouch he removing the demon stone placed it on his fathers chest.  The green stone glowed and disappeared in the king chest. Anders slipped over to his mother and embraced her.
“Mother, what is father doing?” Alyssa smiled and stroked his auburn head.
“He is saving the kings life” Anders looked at her.
“How?”
“Your father is very special my son, he is a wizard”
Anders eyes went wide, and he smiled, yes it made sense, the blue griffin and fabulous armor!
King Steven sat up and looked around, the wound in his chest was gone and he looked very well.  A sigh of relief went through the room.
“Thank you my son, I did not deserve this”
Edward reached out and took Alyssa’s hand.
“Father, everyone deserves a chance”
