Title: Tips for very curly hair?
Post by boingycurls on Jan 18th, 2008 at 1:19pm
My hair is insanely curly (type 3b). Think of thick coils of phone wire about as wide as a finger. I think it's about 15" (a few inches past my shoulders; almost mid-back length if straightened). Does anyone have any tips on how to care for this kind of hair? I'm going for 60-70", by the way. :)

My hair isn't that curly.. more like 3a, but what I can tell you is that curls need a LOT of moisture! So its good to use deep conditioning treatments and leave conditioner on as long as possible in the shower. Also hair stylists have always told me not to use towels on my hair.. which takes out a lot moisture, and instead just blot-drying, or even using paper towels or a t-shirt.
Leave-in conditioners are also really good for curly hair. My sister's hair is also extremely thick and very curly (probably a 3b also), and she has gotten me hooked on Mane & tail shampoo & conditioners. It was originally formulated for Horses hair which is MUCH thicker than human hair, but now is commonly used for humans.. you can get it at pretty much any drug-store & I've become a big fan also!
Hmmm.. those are pretty much all the general things I have been told about how to care for curly hair, but can't really tell you much more as my curl is much different. Hope that helps!

Hi, boingycurls, and welcome to LongLocks.

I suggest you purchase this book:

Curly Girl: The Handbook by Lorraine Massey

This is where I started getting the right information about how to care for my hair.  She also has a line of products called Devacurl.  I swear by her leave-in conditioner Be-Leave In, No-poo and One Condition.

Also check out www.ouidad.com.  She also has a book but I haven't read it.  I use her Quench gel every time I wash.

I'm more 2C/3A, so that's all the help I have for now.

Good Luck-as your hair gets longer and heavier it may get less boingy.

Welcome!  I can't add to the advice our resident curly heads have already given you.  My hair is only wavy, so my experiences are not as relevant.

Good luck with your hair goals!  I hope to get to know you better.
