Title: EARTHQUAKE!!
Post by Trisha on Apr 18th, 2008 at 9:19am
Okay, show of hands:  who felt this morning's earthquake?

*raises hand*

--At first I thought it was our cats wrestling on the bed and making it shake.   ;D

Well, we just felt the 4.5 aftershock...YEESH.  I was in the ladies room, drying my hands when the huge mirror started shaking.  I mean, this mirror must be 8 or 10 feet long, and if it had come off the wall...   :P

Oh yeah! I felt it!

I woke up from a weird dream about 4:20. I got up and lay back down. I thought I heard a very low frequency sound, (as I can hear these more than normal). At first, I thought it was my head oscillating at about 10 hz. I have very high blood pressure and wondered if it was the beginning of a stroke.

Then, about 5 minutes later, the trinkets on her dresser started rattling. It got more insense. I knew it was an earthquake. Upon this stunning revelation, I yell "Earthquake!" to get everyone outside. Once I got to the back door, the shaking wained and then silenced.

My son had never experienced an earthquake so I explained to him about the New Madrid fault that runs south of here. Thinking about this, I turned on CNN to make sure there was nothing bad that happened in SE Missouri where this fault lies.

Much to my surprise, it was NOT the New Madrid but the Ozark Dome line in Illinois that registered at 5.4. There has been small aftershocks, one that measured 4.6. I was driving at that time and did not feel the 2nd, but it was myterious how just at that time two big 18 wheelers acted real funny and another dude on foot darted right in my path causing me to swerve into the oncomig lane to avoid him.

I have no visible damage and am still inspecting. I don't know what I heard before the quake since Fox news' sizmoggraph claims it went to maximim magnitude immediatly.

I woke up at 4:15 to something not right.  It wasn't until later in the day that I heard more about the earthquake.  I'm thinking I must have felt something.

Sir Rat - I'm glad you've not suffered any serious damage.  The rest of you in that area - I hope you are all OK.

Robin, I know the feeling of something not being right I really thought it was my head ready to explode or something. The real low frequency I heard/felt was very strange.

I went to the US geological survey website and reported exactly what I saw/felt/heard. You may consider doing the same as this input, especially since you felt something not right BEFORE the event. You apparenty felt something 5 min. before I did and 15 min. before the event.

Just one more reason for someone to think I am crazy - I can predict earthquakes hundreds of miles away!!! ;D

My other "skills":
Weather prediction - I know when it is going to rain or have a drastic change in temperature.

Scents - I can smell the slightest hint of petroleum based anything.  Need to find the apartment that was just painted a week ago?  I can do it!  Want to know if the carpet they just put down in your house is NEW or something that has been in the warehouse for a month?  I can tell the difference!  Just don't ask me to put gas in your car - that nauseates me.

I'm glad you're all okay. We've been getting a bunch of earthquakes recently here in Aomori. There hadn't been any for a long time and then within the past week or two, we've had three. In fact, there was one this afternoon that measured 5.5 on the Richter Scale.  :P

if I were prone to paranoid conspiracy thoughts I might think that the underground nuclear testing in North Korea was causing the earthquakes!!  ;D

But kidding aside - I'm glad everyone is OK and hope it stays that way.

Curlgirl--I think I'm starting to get desensitized. I was in a panic during my first earthquake, but now I don't even get out if bed if one happens at night. However, I was getting a little worried with the most recent one; it went on for a little longer than I was comfortable with.

BB--lol! I don't know if North Korea is responsible, but it sure seems like something is going on. :D
