Title: Strange odors Post by Debr on Jun 10th, 2008 at 8:19pm
OK I am losing my mind. For the last two days I have smelled smoke. Cigarette smoke mind you. I smell it at home, at church, at the grocery store, and at work. I was up until 130am this morning defrosting my freezer cuz I thought it smelled hot. I do not smoke, and smoking is not allowed in the places I mentioned. I ran my air conditoner last nite for a while to see if there was something in the air and I know the ac filter would filter it out. NO! I still smell even now as I am writing this. My eyes water, burn, I am sneezing and bit stuffy. I dont think its an allergy. I have never heard of an allergy smelling like smoke. No one else seems to smell this smoke and they are looking me rather strangely when I mention it. Do I need a shrink? Is this just a phase I am goiing thru?
The weather has been cool, damp, and rainy, could be some form of a mold that I smell? Another thought. Am I need of a vacation? Somewhere sunny perhaps? Deb |

No, but you do need to visit your doctor. Odors for which you have no explanation can be a sign something is wrong. I did a little research, out of curiosity, and it could be anything from stress to a sinus infection to seizures to a brain tumor. Kind of a broad spectrum there! I would go to the doc and get some good info.

Debr,
Have you had this happen before, where you smell something no one else smells? If so, you may just be supersensitive to certain smells and odors. My co-workers and family refer to me as the canary. I can smell many things long before they can (if they ever smell it). I am usually aware of smoke in the air before the "general population". When there are fires in Montana or California and the winds are right, I can smell the smoke in the air here in Minnesota. It sometimes drives me nuts that I am the only one that can smell it. You might try a little aroma therapy to see if that clears your sense of the smoke smell. Replace the "smoke" with something else - lavendar, roses, something soothing to you. |

I am pretty much the same way and I consider it a blessing and a curse ::) When I smell food I can usually tell what kind I am smelling when it is not in sight :P
I can also hear things better than most people and I have surprised people at work when I am listening to music with my headphones and they think I did not hear anything :o My worst sense is my eyes especially now that I have to have bi-focal lenses :( Jerry |

My sense of smell isn't very advanced however the other day I kept smelling something that seemed very familiar, but didn't know what it was or where the smell was coming from and it would not go away.
Eventually, after I'd completely driven myself nuts because I couldn't place the smell, I realized that the smell was familiar because it was the same smell as the wooden cabinet that my grandfather housed his pipes in. I never figured out what the smell was or where it was coming from, and it has since disappeared. However, I found it really funny that I still remember that smell, as my grandparents have been gone for almost 20 years now. Anyway, my grandmother on the other hand, could always smell gas or anything else before we could. Her sense of smell was uncanny. |

I do suggest getting it checked out, and don't stress about it.
On occasion I smell my deceased grandmother's perfume. I like to think its because her spirit is around me. I am the only one who smells these smells, too. I also smell other things, although I'm not quite sure where its coming from. The funny thing is its a few of the same scents and I am not where those scents would be under normal circumstances. |

I had that thought about my grandfather, but since I don't believe in an after life I quickly dismissed the notion. :P |

Well, the the smell has gone. I cant smell it at all now. I am asthmatic and very sensitive to smoke. If I am in the presence of cigerette smoke too long, it will put me in the hospital. That is why the smell so concerned me. God took care of the smell so all is well now. Thanks all of you.
